Jesús sana a un paralítico
5 Tiempo después, Jesús regresó a la ciudad de Jerusalén para asistir a una fiesta de los judíos. 2 En Jerusalén, cerca de la entrada llamada «Portón de las Ovejas», había una piscina con cinco entradas, que en hebreo se llamaba Betzatá.[a] 3-4 Allí, acostados en el suelo, había muchos enfermos: ciegos, cojos y paralíticos.[b] 5 Entre ellos había un hombre que desde hacía treinta y ocho años estaba enfermo. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio allí acostado, y se enteró de cuánto tiempo había estado enfermo, le preguntó:
—¿Quieres que Dios te sane?
7 El enfermo contestó:
—Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en la piscina cuando el agua se mueve. Cada vez que trato de meterme, alguien lo hace primero.
8 Jesús le dijo:
—Levántate, alza tu camilla y camina.
9 En ese momento el hombre quedó sano, alzó su camilla y comenzó a caminar.
Esto sucedió un sábado, que es el día de descanso obligatorio para los judíos. 10 Por eso, unos jefes de los judíos le dijeron al hombre que había sido sanado:
—Hoy es sábado, y está prohibido que andes cargando tu camilla.
11 Pero él les contestó:
—El que me sanó me dijo: “Levántate, alza tu camilla y camina.”
12 Ellos preguntaron:
—¿Y quién te dijo que te levantaras y caminaras?
13 Pero el hombre no sabía quién lo había sanado, porque Jesús había desaparecido entre toda la gente que estaba allí.
14 Más tarde, Jesús encontró a ese hombre en el templo, y le dijo: «Ahora que estás sano, no vuelvas a pecar, porque te puede pasar algo peor.»
15 El hombre fue a ver a los jefes judíos, y les dijo que Jesús lo había sanado. 16 Entonces ellos empezaron a perseguir a Jesús por hacer milagros los sábados.
17 Pero Jesús les dijo: «Mi Padre nunca deja de trabajar, ni yo tampoco.»
18 Los jefes judíos se molestaron tanto que tuvieron aun más ganas de matar a Jesús. No lo querían porque, además de sanar a los enfermos en día sábado, decía que Dios era su Padre, y que por eso era igual a Dios.
La autoridad del Hijo de Dios
19 Jesús les dijo:
«Les aseguro que yo, el Hijo de Dios, no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta. Sólo hago lo que veo que hace Dios, mi Padre. 20 Él me ama y me muestra todo lo que hace. Y me mostrará cosas aun más grandes, que a ustedes los dejarán asombrados. 21 Porque así como mi Padre hace que los muertos vuelvan a vivir, así también yo le doy vida a quien quiero. 22 Y mi Padre no juzga a nadie. Es a mí, que soy su Hijo, a quien le ha dado ese poder, 23 para que todos me honren como lo honran a él. Cuando alguien no me honra, tampoco honra a mi Padre, que me envió.
24 »Les aseguro que todo el que preste atención a lo que digo, y crea en Dios, que fue quien me envió, tendrá vida eterna. Aunque antes haya vivido alejado de Dios, ya no será condenado, pues habrá recibido la vida eterna. 25 Una cosa es cierta: ahora es cuando los que viven alejados de Dios me oirán a mí, que soy su Hijo. Si me obedecen, tendrán la vida eterna. 26 Porque Dios, mi Padre, tiene el poder para dar la vida, y a mí me ha dado ese poder. 27 También me ha dado autoridad para juzgar, pues yo soy el Hijo del hombre.
28 »No se sorprendan de lo que les digo, porque va a llegar el momento en que los muertos oirán mi voz 29 y saldrán de sus tumbas. Entonces, los que hicieron lo bueno volverán a vivir, y estarán con Dios para siempre; pero los que hicieron lo malo volverán a vivir para ser castigados.
Pruebas de la autoridad de Jesús
30 »Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta. Mi Padre me envió, y él me dice cómo debo juzgar a las personas. Por eso yo juzgo correctamente, porque no hago lo que yo quiero, sino lo que mi Padre me ordena hacer.
31 »Si yo hablara bien de mí mismo, ustedes dirían que miento. 32 Pero conozco a alguien que dirá quién soy yo, y que confirmará que yo digo la verdad. 33 Cuando ustedes enviaron mensajeros a Juan, él les dijo la verdad. 34-35 Las enseñanzas de Juan fueron como una lámpara encendida en la oscuridad, y por un tiempo ustedes se alegraron de escucharlas.
»Pero yo no necesito que nadie hable bien de mí. Si he mencionado a Juan, ha sido sólo para que ustedes crean y Dios los salve. 36 Yo puedo probarles que de verdad mi Padre me ha enviado. 39 »Ustedes estudian la Biblia con mucho cuidado porque creen que así alcanzarán la vida eterna. Sin embargo, a pesar de que la Biblia habla bien de mí, 40 ustedes no quieren creer en mí para alcanzar la vida eterna.
41 »A mí no me interesa que la gente hable bien de mí. 42 Además, a ustedes los conozco muy bien, y sé que no aman a Dios. 43 Él es mi Padre, y me ha enviado, pero ustedes no me han aceptado. Sin embargo, a quien viene por su propia cuenta, ustedes sí lo reciben. 44 ¡Cómo van a creerme, si les gusta que sea la gente la que hable bien de ustedes, y no el Dios único!
45 »No crean que yo voy a acusarlos con mi Padre. Ustedes han confiado en lo que Moisés escribió, y será Moisés quien los acuse. 46 Si le creyeran a Moisés, también creerían en mí, pues él escribió acerca de mí. 47 Pero si no creen en lo que él escribió, ¿cómo van a creer en lo que yo les digo?»

Jesus Heals a Man at a Pool
5 ·Later [L After these things] Jesus went [L up] to Jerusalem for a ·special feast [L feast/festival of the Jews]. 2 In Jerusalem there is a pool with five covered porches, which is called Bethesda[a] [C a pool of water north of the temple thought to have curative powers] in the Hebrew language [C referring to Aramaic, the native language of the Jews at the time]. This pool is near the Sheep Gate. 3 Many sick people were lying on the porches beside the pool. Some were blind, some were crippled, and some were paralyzed |, and they waited for the water to move. 4 ·Sometimes [At a certain time; From time to time] an angel of the Lord came down to the pool and stirred up the water. After the angel did this, the first person to go into the pool was healed from any sickness he had|[b]. 5 A man was lying there who had been ·sick [an invalid; disabled] for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw the man and knew that he had been ·sick [an invalid; disabled] for such a long time, Jesus asked him, “Do you want to be well?”
7 The ·sick man [invalid] answered [him], “Sir, there is no one to help me get into the pool when the water ·starts moving [is stirred up]. While I am coming to the water, someone else always ·gets in [goes down] before me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “·Stand up [T Rise]. Pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk.” 9 And immediately the man ·was well [was healed; became whole]; he picked up his ·mat [bed; cot] and began to walk.
The day this happened was a Sabbath day. 10 So the ·Jews [or Jewish leaders] said to the man who had been healed, “Today is the Sabbath. It is ·against our law [L not lawful/permitted] for you to carry your ·mat [bed; cot] on the Sabbath day [C the fourth commandment prohibited work on the Sabbath, but not specifically this action (Ex. 20:8–11)].”
11 But he answered them, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk.’”
12 Then they asked him, “Who is the man who told you to pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk?”
13 But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, because there were many people in that place, and Jesus had ·left [withdrawn; slipped away unnoticed].
14 Later, Jesus found the man at the Temple [area] and said to him, “See, you are well now. ·Stop sinning [T Sin no more] so that something worse does not happen to you.” [C Sometimes, not always, suffering can be explained by sin.]
15 Then the man left and told ·his people [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
16 Because Jesus was doing ·this [L these things] on the Sabbath day, ·some evil people [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] began to ·persecute [harass] him. 17 But Jesus ·said to [L answered] them, “My Father ·never stops [is always; is still] working [C even on the Sabbath], and so I keep working, too.”
18 This made ·them [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] try still harder to kill him. They said, “First Jesus was breaking the law about the Sabbath day. Now he says that God is his own Father, making himself equal with God!” [C Both breaking the Sabbath and blasphemy against God were punishable by death; Ex. 35:2; Lev. 24:16.]
Jesus Has God’s Authority
19 But Jesus ·said [answered them], “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], the Son can do nothing ·alone [on his own initiative; by himself]. The Son does only what he sees the Father doing, ·because the Son does whatever the Father does [L for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise]. 20 [L For] The Father loves the Son and shows the Son all the things he himself does. But the Father will show the Son even greater things than this so that you can all ·be amazed [marvel; be astonished]. 21 [L For] Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he ·wants to [wishes; wills]. 22 ·In fact, [or For] the Father judges no one, but he has ·given [entrusted to] the Son ·power to do all the judging [L all judgment; Rev. 20:11–15] 23 so that all people will honor the Son as much as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], whoever ·hears [obeys] ·what I say [L my word/message] and believes in the One who sent me has eternal life. That person will not ·be judged guilty [L come into judgment/condemnation] but has ·already left death and entered life [L passed from death into life]. 25 ·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], the ·time [L hour] is coming and is already here when the dead will ·hear [obey] the voice of the Son of God, and those who ·hear [obey] will ·have life [live]. 26 [L For] ·Life comes from the Father himself [just as the Father has life], ·and [so] he has ·allowed the Son to have [given the Son] life in himself as well. 27 And the Father has given the Son the ·approval [authority; power; right] to ·judge [execute judgment], because he is the Son of Man [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14]. 28 Don’t ·be surprised [marvel; be amazed] at this: A ·time [L hour] is coming when all who are dead and in their graves will hear his voice. 29 Then they will come out of their graves. Those who did good ·will rise and have life forever [L to the resurrection resulting in life], but those who did evil ·will rise to be judged guilty [L to the resurrection resulting in condemnation/judgment].
Jesus Is God’s Son
30 “I can do nothing ·alone [by myself; on my own initiative]. I judge ·only the way I am told [L as I hear], so my judgment is ·fair [just; right; righteous]. I don’t ·try to please myself [L seek my own will/desire], but ·I try to please [L the will of] the One who sent me.
31 “If only I ·tell people [testify; witness] about myself, ·what I say [my testimony; witness] is not ·true [valid]. 32 But there is another who ·tells [testifies; witnesses] about me, and I know that ·the things he says [L the witness/testimony he witnesses/testifies] about me are ·true [valid].
33 “You have sent people to John, and he has ·told you [testified/witnessed to] the truth. 34 It is not that I ·need [accept; depend on] ·what humans say [human testimony/witness]; I tell you this so you can be saved. 35 John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were ·happy to enjoy [L willing to rejoice in] his light for a while.
36 “But I have a ·proof [testimony; witness] about myself that is ·greater [weightier] than that of John. [L For] The ·things [L works] I do, which are the ·things [L works] my Father gave me to ·do [complete; finish; C the signs and miracles which point to his saving work on the cross], ·prove [testify; witness] that the Father sent me. 37 And the Father himself who sent me has given ·proof [testimony; witness] ·about me [concerning me; on my behalf]. You have never heard his voice or seen ·what he looks like [his form; his outward appearance]. 38 His ·teaching [word; message] does not ·live [remain; abide] in you, because you don’t believe in the One the Father sent. 39 You ·carefully study [search; examine] the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. They do in fact ·tell [testify; witness] ·about me [concerning me; on my behalf], 40 but you ·refuse [do not want] to come to me to have that life.
41 “I don’t ·need [or accept; receive] ·praise [glory; honor] from people. 42 But I know you—I know that you don’t have God’s love in you. 43 I have come ·from my Father and speak for him [L in my Father’s name], ·but [or and] you don’t ·accept [receive] me. But when another person comes, ·speaking only for himself [L in his own name], you will ·accept [receive] him. 44 You try to ·get praise [receive glory/honor] from each other, but you do not try to ·get the praise [receive glory/honor] that comes from the only God. So how can you believe? 45 Don’t think that I will ·stand before the Father and say you are wrong [L accuse you before the Father]. The one who ·says you are wrong [L accuses you] is Moses, the one ·you hoped would save you [L in whom you hoped]. 46 [L For] If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because Moses wrote about me [C in the Torah, the first five books of the OT; for example, Deut. 18:15 quoted in Acts 3:22]. 47 But if you don’t believe what Moses wrote, how can you believe what I say?”

Jesus Cures a Man at the Bethesda Pool
5 Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival.
2 Near Sheep Gate in Jerusalem was a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It had five porches. 3 Under these porches a large number of sick people—people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed—used to lie.[a] 5 One man, who had been sick for 38 years, was lying there. 6 Jesus saw the man lying there and knew that he had been sick for a long time. So Jesus asked the man, “Would you like to get well?”
7 The sick man answered Jesus, “Sir, I don’t have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I’m trying to get there, someone else steps into the pool ahead of me.”
8 Jesus told the man, “Get up, pick up your cot, and walk.” 9 The man immediately became well, picked up his cot, and walked.
That happened on a day of rest—a holy day. 10 So the Jews told the man who had been healed, “This is a day of rest—a holy day. You’re not allowed to carry your cot today.”
11 The man replied, “The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk.”
12 The Jews asked him, “Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 But the man who had been healed didn’t know who Jesus was. (Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd.)
14 Later, Jesus met the man in the temple courtyard and told him, “You’re well now. Stop sinning so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”
15 The man went back to the Jews and told them that Jesus was the man who had made him well.
The Son Is Equal to the Father
16 The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of rest—a holy day. 17 Jesus replied to them, “My Father is working right now, and so am I.”
18 His reply made the Jews more intent on killing him. Not only did he break the laws about the day of rest—a holy day, but also he made himself equal to God when he said repeatedly that God was his Father.
19 Jesus said to the Jews, “I can guarantee this truth: The Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing. Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does. 20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. The Father will show him even greater things to do than these things so that you will be amazed. 21 In the same way that the Father brings back the dead and gives them life, the Son gives life to anyone he chooses.
22 “The Father doesn’t judge anyone. He has entrusted judgment entirely to the Son 23 so that everyone will honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him. 24 I can guarantee this truth: Those who listen to what I say and believe in the one who sent me will have eternal life. They won’t be judged because they have already passed from death to life.
25 “I can guarantee this truth: A time is coming (and is now here) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who respond to it will live. 26 The Father is the source of life, and he has enabled the Son to be the source of life too.
27 “He has also given the Son authority to pass judgment because he is the Son of Man.[b] 28 Don’t be surprised at what I’ve just said. A time is coming when all the dead will hear his voice, 29 and they will come out of their tombs. Those who have done good will come back to life and live. But those who have done evil will come back to life and will be judged. 30 I can’t do anything on my own. As I listen ⌞to the Father⌟, I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don’t try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants.
31 “If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn’t true. 32 Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. 33 You sent people to John ⌞the Baptizer⌟, and he testified to the truth. 34 But I don’t depend on human testimony. I’m telling you this to save you. 35 John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. 36 But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John’s testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. 37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. 38 So you don’t have the Father’s message within you, because you don’t believe in the person he has sent. 39 You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. 40 Yet, you don’t want to come to me to get ⌞eternal⌟ life.
41 “I don’t accept praise from humans. 42 But I know what kind of people you are. You don’t have any love for God. 43 I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don’t accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe when you accept each other’s praise and don’t look for the praise that comes from the only God?
45 “Don’t think that I will accuse you in the presence of the Father. Moses, the one you trust, is already accusing you. 46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me. Moses wrote about me. 47 If you don’t believe what Moses wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?”

The Healing at the Pool
5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)
Testimonies About Jesus
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.
41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)
45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
