¹⁸Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

¹⁹Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

²⁰For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

¹⁸For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;^(A) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.^(B)

¹⁹Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;^(C) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. ²⁰For the Father loves the Son^(D) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,^(E) so that you will be amazed.

Jesus Is Equal with God

¹⁸This was why the Jews ^(A)were seeking all the more to kill him, ^(B)because not only was he ^(C)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God ^(D)his own Father, ^(E)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

¹⁹So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(F)the Son ^(G)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[a] does, that the Son does likewise. ²⁰For ^(H)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And ^(I)greater works than these will he show him, so that ^(J)you may marvel.
