Jesús y la mujer de Samaria
4 Los fariseos se enteraron de que Jesús hacía más discípulos y bautizaba más que Juan 2 (aunque en realidad no era Jesús el que bautizaba, sino sus discípulos). 3 Cuando Jesús lo supo, salió de Judea para volver a Galilea.
4 En su viaje, tenía que pasar por la región de Samaria. 5 De modo que llegó a un pueblo de Samaria que se llamaba Sicar, cerca del terreno que Jacob había dado en herencia a su hijo José. 6 Allí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, cansado del camino, se sentó junto al pozo. Era cerca del mediodía. 7-8 Los discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar algo de comer. En eso, una mujer de Samaria llegó al pozo a sacar agua, y Jesús le dijo:
—Dame un poco de agua.
9 Pero como los judíos no tienen trato con los samaritanos, la mujer le respondió:
—¿Cómo es que tú, siendo judío, me pides agua a mí, que soy samaritana?
10 Jesús le contestó:
—Si supieras lo que Dios da y quién es el que te está pidiendo agua, tú le pedirías a él, y él te daría agua viva.
11 La mujer le dijo:
—Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua, y el pozo es muy hondo: ¿de dónde vas a darme agua viva? 12 Nuestro antepasado Jacob nos dejó este pozo, del que él mismo bebía y del que bebían también sus hijos y sus animales. ¿Acaso eres tú más que él?
13 Jesús le contestó:
—Todos los que beben de esta agua, volverán a tener sed; 14 pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré, nunca volverá a tener sed. Porque el agua que yo le daré se convertirá en él en manantial de agua que brotará dándole vida eterna.
15 La mujer le dijo:
—Señor, dame de esa agua, para que no vuelva yo a tener sed ni tenga que venir aquí a sacar agua.
16 Jesús le dijo:
—Ve a llamar a tu marido y vuelve acá.
17 La mujer le contestó:
—No tengo marido.
Jesús le dijo:
—Bien dices que no tienes marido; 18 porque has tenido cinco maridos, y el que ahora tienes no es tu marido. Es cierto lo que has dicho.
19 Al oír esto, la mujer le dijo:
—Señor, ya veo que eres un profeta. 20 Nuestros antepasados, los samaritanos, adoraron a Dios aquí, en este monte; pero ustedes los judíos dicen que Jerusalén es el lugar donde debemos adorarlo.
21 Jesús le contestó:
—Créeme, mujer, que llega la hora en que ustedes adorarán al Padre sin tener que venir a este monte ni ir a Jerusalén. 22 Ustedes no saben a quién adoran; pero nosotros sabemos a quién adoramos, pues la salvación viene de los judíos. 23 Pero llega la hora, y es ahora mismo, cuando los que de veras adoran al Padre lo harán de un modo verdadero, conforme al Espíritu de Dios. Pues el Padre quiere que así lo hagan los que lo adoran. 24 Dios es Espíritu, y los que lo adoran deben hacerlo de un modo verdadero, conforme al Espíritu de Dios.
25 La mujer le dijo:
—Yo sé que va a venir el Mesías (es decir, el Cristo); y cuando él venga, nos lo explicará todo.
26 Jesús le dijo:
—Ése soy yo, el mismo que habla contigo.
27 En esto llegaron sus discípulos, y se quedaron extrañados de que Jesús estuviera hablando con una mujer. Pero ninguno se atrevió a preguntarle qué quería, o de qué estaba conversando con ella. 28 La mujer dejó su cántaro y se fue al pueblo, donde dijo a la gente:
29 —Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho. ¿No será éste el Mesías?
30 Entonces salieron del pueblo y fueron a donde estaba Jesús. 31 Mientras tanto, los discípulos le rogaban:
—Maestro, come algo.
32 Pero él les dijo:
—Yo tengo una comida, que ustedes no conocen.
33 Los discípulos comenzaron a preguntarse unos a otros:
—¿Será que le habrán traído algo de comer?
34 Pero Jesús les dijo:
—Mi comida es hacer la voluntad del que me envió y terminar su trabajo. 35 Ustedes dicen: “Todavía faltan cuatro meses para la cosecha”; pero yo les digo que se fijen en los sembrados, pues ya están maduros para la cosecha. 36 El que trabaja en la cosecha recibe su paga, y la cosecha que recoge es para vida eterna, para que tanto el que siembra como el que cosecha se alegren juntamente. 37 Pues bien dice el dicho, que “Unos siembran y otros cosechan.” 38 Y yo los envié a ustedes a cosechar lo que no les costó ningún trabajo; otros fueron los que trabajaron, y ustedes son los que se han beneficiado del trabajo de ellos.
39 Muchos de los habitantes de aquel pueblo de Samaria creyeron en Jesús por lo que les había asegurado la mujer: «Me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho.» 40 Así que, cuando los samaritanos llegaron, rogaron a Jesús que se quedara con ellos. Él se quedó allí dos días, 41 y muchos más creyeron al oír lo que él mismo decía. 42 Y dijeron a la mujer: «Ahora creemos, no solamente por lo que tú nos dijiste, sino también porque nosotros mismos le hemos oído y sabemos que de veras es el Salvador del mundo.»
Jesús sana al hijo de un oficial del rey(A)
43 Pasados esos dos días, Jesús salió de Samaria y siguió su viaje a Galilea. 44 Porque, como él mismo dijo, a un profeta no lo honran en su propia tierra. 45 Cuando llegó a Galilea, los de aquella región lo recibieron bien, porque también habían ido a la fiesta de la Pascua a Jerusalén y habían visto todo lo que él hizo entonces.
46 Jesús regresó a Caná de Galilea, donde había convertido el agua en vino. Y había un alto oficial del rey, que tenía un hijo enfermo en Cafarnaúm. 47 Cuando el oficial supo que Jesús había llegado de Judea a Galilea, fue a verlo y le rogó que fuera a su casa y sanara a su hijo, que estaba a punto de morir. 48 Jesús le contestó:
—Ustedes no creen, si no ven señales y milagros.
49 Pero el oficial le dijo:
—Señor, ven pronto, antes que mi hijo se muera.
50 Jesús le dijo entonces:
—Vuelve a casa; tu hijo vive.
El hombre creyó lo que Jesús le dijo, y se fue. 51 Mientras regresaba a su casa, sus criados salieron a su encuentro y le dijeron:
—¡Su hijo vive!
52 Él les preguntó a qué hora había comenzado a sentirse mejor su hijo, y le contestaron:
—Ayer a la una de la tarde se le quitó la fiebre.
53 El padre cayó entonces en la cuenta de que era la misma hora en que Jesús le dijo: «Tu hijo vive»; y él y toda su familia creyeron en Jesús.
54 Ésta fue la segunda señal milagrosa que hizo Jesús, cuando volvió de Judea a Galilea.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(A)— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea(B) and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he had to go through Samaria.(C) 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(D) 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(E) 8 (His disciples had gone into the town(F) to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(H)
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(K) welling up to eternal life.”(L)
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(N) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(P)
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(R) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(S) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(T) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(U) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(V) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(W) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(X) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(Y)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(Z) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(AA) Could this be the Messiah?”(AB) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(AC) eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(AD) that you know nothing about.”
33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(AE) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AF) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AG) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AH) a crop for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(AJ) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(AK) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(AL) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AM)
Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
43 After the two days(AN) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(AO) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AP) for they also had been there.
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(AQ) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(AR) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(AS) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(AT) believed.
54 This was the second sign(AU) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

The woman of Samaria
4 So when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was making more disciples than John, and was baptizing them 2 (Jesus himself didn’t baptize people; it was his disciples who were doing it), 3 he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.
4 He had to go through Samaria, 5 and he came to a town in Samaria named Sychar. It was near the place which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired from the journey, sat down there by the well. It was about midday.
7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus spoke to her.
“Give me a drink,” he said. 8 (The disciples had gone off into the town to buy food.)
9 “What!” said the Samaritan woman. “You, a Jew, asking for a drink from me, a woman, and a Samaritan at that?” (Jews, you see, don’t have any dealings with Samaritans.)
10 “If only you’d known God’s gift,” replied Jesus, “and who it is that’s saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you’d have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
11 “But sir,” replied the woman, “you haven’t got a bucket! And the well’s deep! So how were you thinking of getting living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, with his sons and his animals?”
13 “Everyone who drinks this water,” Jesus replied, “will get thirsty again. 14 But anyone who drinks the water I’ll give them won’t ever be thirsty again. No: the water I’ll give them will become a spring of water welling up to the life of God’s new age.”
15 “Sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I won’t be thirsty anymore, and I won’t have to come here to draw from the well.”
Jesus and the woman
16 “Well then,” said Jesus to the woman, “go and call your husband and come here.”
17 “I haven’t got a husband,” replied the woman.
“You’re telling me you haven’t got a husband!” replied Jesus. 18 “The fact is, you’ve had five husbands, and the one you’ve got now isn’t your husband. You were speaking the truth!”
19 “Well, sir,” replied the woman, “I can see you’re a prophet . . . 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain. And you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
21 “Believe me, woman,” replied Jesus, “the time is coming when you won’t worship the father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you don’t know. We worship what we do know; salvation, you see, is indeed from the Jews. 23 But the time is coming—indeed, it’s here already!—when true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and in truth. Yes; that’s the kind of worshipers the father is looking for. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
25 “I know that Messiah is coming,” said the woman, “the one they call ‘the anointed.’ When he comes, he’ll tell us everything.”
26 “I’m the one—the one speaking to you right now,” said Jesus.
Sower and reaper rejoice together
27 Just then Jesus’ disciples came up. They were astonished that he was talking with a woman; but nobody said “What did you want?” or “Why were you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water-jar, went into the town and spoke to the people.
29 “Come on!” she said. “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! You don’t think he can be the Messiah, do you?”
30 So they left the town and were coming out to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were nagging him.
“Come on, Rabbi!” they were saying. “You must have something to eat!”
32 “I’ve got food to eat that you know nothing about,” he said.
33 “Nobody’s brought him anything to eat, have they?” said the disciples to one another.
34 “My food,” replied Jesus, “is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to finish his work! 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘Another four months, then comes harvest’? Well, let me tell you, raise your eyes and see! The fields are white! It’s harvest time already! 36 The reaper earns his pay, and gathers crops for the life of God’s coming age, so that sower and reaper can celebrate together. 37 This is where that saying comes true, ‘One sows, another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap what you didn’t work for. Others did the hard work, and you’ve come into the results.”
39 Several Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of what the woman said in evidence about him, “He told me everything I did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them. And he stayed there two days.
41 Many more believed because of what he said.
42 “We believe, too,” they said to the woman, “but it’s no longer because of what you told us. We’ve heard him ourselves! We know that he really is the one! He’s the savior of the world!”
The official’s son
43 After the two days in Samaria, Jesus went off from there to Galilee. 44 Jesus himself gave evidence, after all, that a prophet isn’t honored in his own country. 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the festival, they having been at the festival themselves.
46 So he went once more to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.
There was a royal official in Capernaum whose son was ill. 47 He heard that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, and he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, since he was at the point of death.
48 “Unless you see signs and miracles,” replied Jesus, “you won’t ever believe.”
49 “Sir,” replied the official, “come down before my child dies!”
50 “Off you go!” said Jesus. “Your son will live!”
The man believed the word which Jesus had spoken to him, and he set off. 51 But while he was still on his way down to Capernaum, his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.
52 So he asked them what time he had begun to get better.
“Yesterday afternoon, about one o’clock,” they said. “That’s when the fever left him.”
53 So the father knew that it had happened at the very moment when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live!” He himself believed, and so did all his household.
54 This was now the second sign Jesus did, when he came out of Judaea into Galilee.

A Samaritan Woman Meets Her Messiah
4 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and (A)baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that (B)Jacob (C)gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For (D)Jews have no dealings with (E)Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the (F)gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (G)living water.”
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but (H)whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him (I)will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15 (J)The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, (K)I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on (L)this mountain, and you Jews say that in (M)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming (N)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship (O)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for (P)salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will (Q)worship the Father in (R)spirit (S)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 (T)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah (U)is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, (V)He will tell us all things.”
26 Jesus said to her, (W)“I who speak to you am He.”
The Whitened Harvest
27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”
28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man (X)who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.
31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
34 Jesus said to them, (Y)“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (Z)finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes (AA)the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, (AB)for they are already white for harvest! 36 (AC)And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that (AD)both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: (AE)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; (AF)others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
The Savior of the World
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him (AG)because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own (AH)word.
42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for (AI)we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
Welcome at Galilee
43 Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. 44 For (AJ)Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (AK)having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; (AL)for they also had gone to the feast.
A Nobleman’s Son Healed
46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee (AM)where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain [b]nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, (AN)“Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”
52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
