25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will tell us everything.” (Messiah is the one called Christ.)
26 Jesus told her, “I am he, and I am speaking to you now.”
27 At that time his disciples returned. They were surprised that he was talking to a woman. But none of them asked him, “What do you want from her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”

25 De vrouw zei tegen Hem: "Ik weet dat op een dag de Messias komt. (Hij wordt ook wel de Christus genoemd.) Als Hij er eenmaal is, zal Hij ons alles vertellen en uitleggen." 26 Jezus antwoordde: "IK BEN dat,[a] Ik die nu met jou praat."
27 Op dat moment kwamen de leerlingen terug. Ze waren verbaasd dat Hij met een vrouw aan het praten was. Toch zeiden ze er geen van allen iets van.

- Johannes 4:26 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het Oude Testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.
