3 有一个法利赛人名叫尼哥德慕，是犹太人的官。 2 一天晚上，他来见耶稣，说：“老师，我们知道你是上帝差来教导人的，因为如果没有上帝的同在，没有人能行你所行的神迹。”
3 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你，人若不重生[a]，就不能看见上帝的国。”
4 尼哥德慕说：“人老了，怎能重生呢？难道要再进母腹生一次吗？”
5 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你，人如果不是从水和圣灵生的，就不能进上帝的国。 6 从肉体生的还是肉体，从圣灵生的才是灵。 7 所以我说你们必须重生，你不要惊奇。 8 风随意吹动，你听见它的声音，却不知道它从哪里来，往哪里去。凡从圣灵生的人也是这样。”
9 尼哥德慕又问：“这怎么可能呢？”

31 “从天上来的，超越一切；从地上来的，属于地，他所谈论的也不外乎地上的事。那来自天上、超越万物的， 32 要把所见所闻讲给人听，只是没有人接受祂的见证。 33 但已经接受祂见证的人证实了上帝是真实的。 34 上帝所差来的，说的是上帝的话，因为上帝将圣灵无限量地赐给祂。 35 父爱子，已把万物交在祂手里。 36 信子的人有永生；不信子的人得不到永生，上帝的烈怒常在他身上。”

3 Zo was er een Farizeeër, een lid van de Hoge Raad, die Nikodemus heette 2 en die op een nacht met Jezus kwam praten. ‘Meester,’ zei hij, ‘wij weten dat God U gezonden heeft om ons te leren. Want niemand kan de wondertekenen doen die U doet, als God niet met hem is.’ 3 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Luister goed, wie niet opnieuw geboren wordt, kan het Koninkrijk van God niet ontdekken.’ 4 ‘Opnieuw geboren?’ vroeg Nikodemus. ‘Hoe kan dat? Iemand kan toch niet voor de tweede keer uit zijn moeders lichaam geboren worden?’ 5 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Toch is het zoals Ik zeg. Niemand kan het Koninkrijk van God binnengaan, als hij niet geboren wordt uit water en Geest. 6 Uit mensen komt menselijk leven voort, maar uit de Geest van God komt geestelijk leven voort. 7 Het is dus helemaal niet zo vreemd dat Ik zei dat u opnieuw geboren moet worden. 8 De wind waait waarheen hij wil. Je hoort hem wel, maar je weet niet waar hij vandaan komt en waar hij heen gaat. Zo is het ook als iemand door de Geest van God nieuw leven krijgt.’ 9 Nikodemus vroeg: ‘Hoe gebeurt dat dan?’ 10 Jezus antwoordde: ‘U leert de Joden hoe zij met God en hun medemensen moeten leven. Begrijpt u niet wat Ik zeg? 11 Ik weet waarover Ik spreek en vertel wat Ik gezien heb, en toch gelooft u Mij niet. 12 Als u niet eens gelooft wat Ik over gewone, aardse dingen zeg, hoe zult u dan geloven wat Ik over de hemelse dingen zeg? 13 Er is nog nooit iemand bij God geweest behalve Ik, de Mensenzoon, die bij Hem vandaan komt.
14 Zoals Mozes in de woestijn een koperen slang omhoog hield, zo moet ook Ik, de Mensenzoon, omhoog geheven worden, 15 opdat ieder die in Mij gelooft, eeuwig leven zal hebben. 16 Want God heeft zoveel liefde voor de wereld dat Hij zijn enige Zoon heeft gegeven, zodat ieder die in Hem gelooft, niet verloren gaat maar eeuwig leven heeft.
17 God heeft zijn Zoon niet naar de wereld gestuurd om de wereld te veroordelen, maar om haar door Hem van de ondergang te redden. 18 Wie zijn vertrouwen op Jezus stelt, wordt niet veroordeeld. Maar wie niet gelooft, is al veroordeeld omdat hij geen vertrouwen heeft gehad in de naam van Gods enige Zoon. 19 Het oordeel komt tot stand doordat het licht in de wereld is gekomen, maar de mensen hebben de voorkeur gegeven aan de duisternis. Dat komt omdat zij slechte dingen hebben gedaan. 20 Want wie zondigt, heeft een hekel aan het licht. Hij ontwijkt het uit angst dat al die slechte dingen aan het licht zullen komen. 21 Maar wie Gods wil doet, komt tot het licht, zodat van alles wat hij doet, gezien kan worden dat God het is die daarin werkzaam is.’
Het getuigenis van Johannes de Doper
22 Later ging Jezus met zijn leerlingen naar Judea. Hij trok daar een tijd rond en doopte. 23 Johannes de Doper doopte ook, in Enon bij Salim, daar was veel water. Er kwamen daar veel mensen om zich te laten dopen. 24 Johannes was toen nog niet gevangengenomen.
25 Op een dag hadden de leerlingen van Johannes een meningsverschil met een Jood over de manier waarop men zich ritueel moet reinigen. 26 Zij kwamen naar Johannes toe en zeiden tegen hem: ‘Meester, er is nog iemand die doopt en iedereen gaat naar hem toe. Het is de man die u aan de overkant van de Jordaan hebt ontmoet en van wie U zei dat Hij de Christus is.’ 27 Johannes antwoordde: ‘Een mens kan zich helemaal niets toe-eigenen, als God het hem niet heeft gegeven. 28 Jullie hebben mij steeds horen zeggen dat ik niet de Christus ben, maar dat God mij voor Hem uit gestuurd heeft. 29 Wie de bruid krijgt, is de bruidegom. De vriend van de bruidegom hoort hem en is blij als hij de stem van de bruidegom hoort. Daarom ben ik blij als de mensen naar Hem toegaan. 30 Hij moet groter worden en ik steeds kleiner. 31 Ik ben van de aarde en spreek de taal van de aarde. Hij komt uit de hemel en is belangrijker dan enig ander. Hij staat boven alle andere mensen. 32 Hij vertelt wat Hij gezien en gehoord heeft, maar niemand gelooft Hem. 33 Wie Hem wel gelooft, bevestigt daarmee dat God een en al waarheid is. 34 Hij is door God gestuurd en geeft de woorden van God door. God geeft Hem zijn Geest zonder beperking. 35 De Vader houdt van zijn Zoon en heeft Hem alle macht gegeven. 36 Wie zich aan de Zoon toevertrouwt, heeft eeuwig leven. Wie de Zoon ongehoorzaam is, zal dat leven niet ontvangen. Integendeel, de straf van God blijft op hem rusten.’

Jesús enseña a Nicodemo
3 Había entre los fariseos un dirigente de los judíos llamado Nicodemo. 2 Este fue de noche a visitar a Jesús.
―Rabí —le dijo—, sabemos que eres un maestro que ha venido de parte de Dios, porque nadie podría hacer las señales que tú haces si Dios no estuviera con él.
3 ―De veras te aseguro que quien no nazca de nuevo[a] no puede ver el reino de Dios —dijo Jesús.
4 ―¿Cómo puede uno nacer de nuevo siendo ya viejo? —preguntó Nicodemo—. ¿Acaso puede entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre y volver a nacer?
5 ―Yo te aseguro que quien no nazca de agua y del Espíritu no puede entrar en el reino de Dios —respondió Jesús—. 6 Lo que nace del cuerpo es cuerpo; lo que nace del Espíritu es espíritu. 7 No te sorprendas de que te haya dicho: “Tenéis que nacer de nuevo”. 8 El viento sopla por donde quiere, y lo oyes silbar, aunque ignoras de dónde viene y a dónde va. Lo mismo pasa con todo el que nace del Espíritu.
9 Nicodemo replicó:
―¿Cómo es posible que esto suceda?
10 ―Tú eres maestro de Israel, ¿y no entiendes estas cosas? —respondió Jesús—. 11 Te aseguro que hablamos de lo que sabemos y damos testimonio de lo que hemos visto personalmente, pero vosotros no aceptáis nuestro testimonio. 12 Si os he hablado de las cosas terrenales, y no creéis, ¿entonces cómo vais a creer si os hablo de las celestiales? 13 Nadie ha subido jamás al cielo sino el que descendió del cielo, el Hijo del hombre.[b]
Jesús y el amor del Padre
14 »Como levantó Moisés la serpiente en el desierto, así también tiene que ser levantado el Hijo del hombre, 15 para que todo el que crea en él tenga vida eterna.[c]
16 »Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo el que cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. 17 Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él. 18 El que cree en él no es condenado, pero el que no cree ya está condenado por no haber creído en el nombre del Hijo unigénito de Dios. 19 Esta es la causa de la condenación: que la luz vino al mundo, pero la humanidad prefirió las tinieblas a la luz, porque sus hechos eran perversos. 20 Pues todo el que hace lo malo aborrece la luz, y no se acerca a ella por temor a que sus obras queden al descubierto. 21 En cambio, el que practica la verdad se acerca a la luz, para que se vea claramente que ha hecho sus obras en obediencia a Dios.[d]
Testimonio de Juan el Bautista acerca de Jesús
22 Después de esto, Jesús fue con sus discípulos a la región de Judea. Allí pasó algún tiempo con ellos, y bautizaba. 23 También Juan estaba bautizando en Enón, cerca de Salín, porque allí había mucha agua. Así que la gente iba para ser bautizada. 24 (Esto sucedió antes de que encarcelaran a Juan). 25 Se entabló entonces una discusión entre los discípulos de Juan y un judío[e] en torno a los ritos de purificación. 26 Aquellos fueron a ver a Juan y le dijeron:
―Rabí, fíjate, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, y de quien tú diste testimonio, ahora está bautizando, y todos acuden a él.
27 ―Nadie puede recibir nada a menos que Dios se lo conceda —respondió Juan—. 28 Vosotros sois testigos de que dije: “Yo no soy el Cristo, sino que he sido enviado delante de él”. 29 El que tiene a la novia es el novio. Pero el amigo del novio, que está a su lado y lo escucha, se llena de alegría cuando oye la voz del novio. Esa es la alegría que me inunda. 30 A él le toca crecer, y a mí, menguar.
El que viene del cielo
31 »El que viene de arriba está por encima de todos; el que es de la tierra es terrenal y de lo terrenal habla. El que viene del cielo está por encima de todos 32 y da testimonio de lo que ha visto y oído, pero nadie recibe su testimonio. 33 El que lo recibe certifica que Dios es veraz. 34 El enviado de Dios comunica el mensaje divino, pues Dios mismo le da su Espíritu sin restricción. 35 El Padre ama al Hijo, y ha puesto todo en sus manos. 36 El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna; pero el que rechaza al Hijo no sabrá lo que es esa vida, sino que permanecerá bajo el castigo de Dios».[f]

Born from Above
3 1-2 There was a man of the Pharisee sect, Nicodemus, a prominent leader among the Jews. Late one night he visited Jesus and said, “Rabbi, we all know you’re a teacher straight from God. No one could do all the God-pointing, God-revealing acts you do if God weren’t in on it.”
3 Jesus said, “You’re absolutely right. Take it from me: Unless a person is born from above, it’s not possible to see what I’m pointing to—to God’s kingdom.”
4 “How can anyone,” said Nicodemus, “be born who has already been born and grown up? You can’t re-enter your mother’s womb and be born again. What are you saying with this ‘born-from-above’ talk?”
5-6 Jesus said, “You’re not listening. Let me say it again. Unless a person submits to this original creation—the ‘wind-hovering-over-the-water’ creation, the invisible moving the visible, a baptism into a new life—it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom. When you look at a baby, it’s just that: a body you can look at and touch. But the person who takes shape within is formed by something you can’t see and touch—the Spirit—and becomes a living spirit.
7-8 “So don’t be so surprised when I tell you that you have to be ‘born from above’—out of this world, so to speak. You know well enough how the wind blows this way and that. You hear it rustling through the trees, but you have no idea where it comes from or where it’s headed next. That’s the way it is with everyone ‘born from above’ by the wind of God, the Spirit of God.”
9 Nicodemus asked, “What do you mean by this? How does this happen?”
10-12 Jesus said, “You’re a respected teacher of Israel and you don’t know these basics? Listen carefully. I’m speaking sober truth to you. I speak only of what I know by experience; I give witness only to what I have seen with my own eyes. There is nothing secondhand here, no hearsay. Yet instead of facing the evidence and accepting it, you procrastinate with questions. If I tell you things that are plain as the hand before your face and you don’t believe me, what use is there in telling you of things you can’t see, the things of God?
13-15 “No one has ever gone up into the presence of God except the One who came down from that Presence, the Son of Man. In the same way that Moses lifted the serpent in the desert so people could have something to see and then believe, it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up—and everyone who looks up to him, trusting and expectant, will gain a real life, eternal life.
16-18 “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.
19-21 “This is the crisis we’re in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.”
The Bridegroom’s Friend
22-26 After this conversation, Jesus went on with his disciples into the Judean countryside and relaxed with them there. He was also baptizing. At the same time, John was baptizing over at Aenon near Salim, where water was abundant. This was before John was thrown into jail. John’s disciples got into an argument with the establishment Jews over the nature of baptism. They came to John and said, “Rabbi, you know the one who was with you on the other side of the Jordan? The one you authorized with your witness? Well, he’s now competing with us. He’s baptizing, too, and everyone’s going to him instead of us.”
27-29 John answered, “It’s not possible for a person to succeed—I’m talking about eternal success—without heaven’s help. You yourselves were there when I made it public that I was not the Messiah but simply the one sent ahead of him to get things ready. The one who gets the bride is, by definition, the bridegroom. And the bridegroom’s friend, his ‘best man’—that’s me—in place at his side where he can hear every word, is genuinely happy. How could he be jealous when he knows that the wedding is finished and the marriage is off to a good start?
29-30 “That’s why my cup is running over. This is the assigned moment for him to move into the center, while I slip off to the sidelines.
31-33 “The One who comes from above is head and shoulders over other messengers from God. The earthborn is earthbound and speaks earth language; the heavenborn is in a league of his own. He sets out the evidence of what he saw and heard in heaven. No one wants to deal with these facts. But anyone who examines this evidence will come to stake his life on this: that God himself is the truth.
34-36 “The One that God sent speaks God’s words. And don’t think he rations out the Spirit in bits and pieces. The Father loves the Son extravagantly. He turned everything over to him so he could give it away—a lavish distribution of gifts. That is why whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever! And that is also why the person who avoids and distrusts the Son is in the dark and doesn’t see life. All he experiences of God is darkness, and an angry darkness at that.”

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”(G)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)
9 “How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)
16 For God so loved(V) the world that he gave(W) his one and only Son,(X) that whoever believes(Y) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(Z) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AA) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AB) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AC) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AD) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AE) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AF) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AG) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]
31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
