向門徒們第三次顯現
21 這些事以後，耶穌在太巴列湖邊[a][b]又向門徒們顯明了自己。他是這樣顯明自己的：
2 當時，西門彼得、那叫迪杜馬[c]的多馬、加利利的迦拿人拿旦業[d]、西庇太的兩個兒子、還有他的另外兩位門徒，正在一起。
3 西門彼得對大家說：「我去打魚。」
他們說：「我們也和你一起去。」他們就出去，上了船。可是那一夜，他們什麼也沒有捕到。
4 天快亮的時候，耶穌站在岸上，只是門徒們沒有認出他就是耶穌。
5 耶穌對他們說：「孩子們，你們沒有魚吧？」
他們回答：「沒有。」
6 耶穌說：「你們把網撒在船的右邊，就會捕到。」他們就把網撒下，竟拉不上來，因為魚很多。 7 耶穌所愛的那門徒對彼得說：「那是主！」
當時，西門彼得赤著身子，一聽說是主，就把外衣繫上，跳進湖裡。 8 其他在船上的門徒，拖著滿網的魚過來了。他們離岸不遠，約有九十公尺[e]。 9 他們一上岸，就看見有一堆炭火，上面放著魚，還有餅。
10 耶穌說：「把你們剛捕到的魚，拿幾條[f]過來。」 11 西門彼得就上去，把網拖到岸上，滿網大魚，共一百五十三條。雖然有這麼多魚，網卻沒有撐破。
12 耶穌對他們說：「來吃早飯吧。」但沒有一個門徒敢問他：「你是誰？」因為他們知道是主。 13 耶穌過來，拿起餅分給他們，把魚也如此分了。
14 耶穌從死人中復活後，這已經是他第三次向門徒們顯現了。
耶穌與彼得
15 大家吃完早飯後，耶穌就問西門彼得：「約翰[g]的兒子西門，你愛我勝過這些嗎？[h]」
彼得說：「是的，主啊！你知道我喜愛你。」
耶穌對他說：「餵養我的小羊。」
16 耶穌第二次又問他：「約翰[i]的兒子西門，你愛我嗎？」
彼得回答說：「是的，主啊！你知道我喜愛你。」
耶穌對他說：「牧養我的羊。」
17 耶穌第三次問他：「約翰[j]的兒子西門，你喜愛我嗎？」
彼得感到憂傷，因為耶穌第三次是對他說：「你喜愛我嗎？」彼得說：「主啊，你知道一切，你知道我喜愛你。」
耶穌對他說：「餵養我的羊。 18 我確確實實地告訴你：你年輕的時候，自己束上腰帶，到你願意去的地方；但你年老的時候，要伸出雙手，別人要把你束上，帶你到不願意去的地方。」 19 耶穌說這話，是指彼得將會以怎樣的死來榮耀神。說了這話，耶穌對他說：「你跟從我！」
論耶穌所愛的那門徒
20 彼得轉過身來，看見耶穌所愛的那門徒跟著走。他就是晚餐時貼近耶穌[k]，問「主啊，出賣你的是誰」的那個門徒。 21 彼得看見他，就問耶穌：「主啊，那麼，這個人會怎麼樣呢？」
22 耶穌說：「就算我願意他一直留到我來的時候，這與你有什麼關係？你跟從我！」
23 於是在弟兄中傳出了這樣一種說法：「那門徒不會死。」其實耶穌並沒有說他不會死，而是說：「就算我願意他一直留到我來的時候，這與你有什麼關係？」
後記
24 正是這個門徒，為這些事做見證，並記下了這些事，而且我們知道他的見證是真實的。
25 耶穌所行的事，另外還有很多。如果把它們一一記載下來，我想，所寫出來的書，連整個世界也容納不下了。

Chapter 21
The Appearance to the Seven Disciples. 1 [a]After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way.(A) 2 Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons,[b] and two others of his disciples. 3 [c]Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(B) 4 When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(C) 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.”(D) 6 So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. 7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. 9 [d](E)When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three[e] large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.(F) 12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him,[f] “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish.(G) 14 [g]This was now the third time(H) Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.
Jesus and Peter.[h] 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,[i] “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”[j] He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” [Jesus] said to him, “Feed my sheep.(I) 18 [k]Amen, amen, I say to you,(J) when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”(K)
The Beloved Disciple. 20 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?”(L) 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come?[l] What concern is it of yours? You follow me.”(M) 23 [m]So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just “What if I want him to remain until I come? [What concern is it of yours?]”
Conclusion. 24 It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them,[n] and we know that his testimony is true.(N) 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.(O)

- 21:1–23 There are many non-Johannine peculiarities in this chapter, some suggesting Lucan Greek style; yet this passage is closer to John than Jn 7:53–8:11. There are many Johannine features as well. Its closest parallels in the synoptic gospels are found in Lk 5:1–11 and Mt 14:28–31. Perhaps the tradition was ultimately derived from John but preserved by some disciple other than the writer of the rest of the gospel. The appearances narrated seem to be independent of those in Jn 20. Even if a later addition, the chapter was added before publication of the gospel, for it appears in all manuscripts.
- 21:2 Zebedee’s sons: the only reference to James and John in this gospel (but see note on Jn 1:37). Perhaps the phrase was originally a gloss to identify, among the five, the two others of his disciples. The anonymity of the latter phrase is more Johannine (Jn 1:35). The total of seven may suggest the community of the disciples in its fullness.
- 21:3–6 This may be a variant of Luke’s account of the catch of fish; see note on Lk 5:1–11.
- 21:9, 12–13 It is strange that Jesus already has fish since none have yet been brought ashore. This meal may have had eucharistic significance for early Christians since Jn 21:13 recalls Jn 6:11 which uses the vocabulary of Jesus’ action at the Last Supper; but see also note on Mt 14:19.
- 21:11 The exact number 153 is probably meant to have a symbolic meaning in relation to the apostles’ universal mission; Jerome claims that Greek zoologists catalogued 153 species of fish. Or 153 is the sum of the numbers from 1 to 17. Others invoke Ez 47:10.
- 21:12 None…dared to ask him: is Jesus’ appearance strange to them? Cf. Lk 24:16; Mk 16:12; Jn 20:14. The disciples do, however, recognize Jesus before the breaking of the bread (opposed to Lk 24:35).
- 21:14 This verse connects Jn 20 and 21; cf. Jn 20:19, 26.
- 21:15–23 This section constitutes Peter’s rehabilitation and emphasizes his role in the church.
- 21:15–17 In these three verses there is a remarkable variety of synonyms: two different Greek verbs for love (see note on Jn 15:13); two verbs for feed/tend; two nouns for sheep; two verbs for know. But apparently there is no difference of meaning. The threefold confession of Peter is meant to counteract his earlier threefold denial (Jn 18:17, 25, 27). The First Vatican Council cited these verses in defining that Jesus after his resurrection gave Peter the jurisdiction of supreme shepherd and ruler over the whole flock.
- 21:15 More than these: probably “more than these disciples do” rather than “more than you love them” or “more than you love these things [fishing, etc.].”
- 21:18 Originally probably a proverb about old age, now used as a figurative reference to the crucifixion of Peter.
- 21:22 Until I come: a reference to the parousia.
- 21:23 This whole scene takes on more significance if the disciple is already dead. The death of the apostolic generation caused problems in the church because of a belief that Jesus was to have returned first. Loss of faith sometimes resulted; cf. 2 Pt 3:4.
- 21:24 Who…has written them: this does not necessarily mean he wrote them with his own hand. The same expression is used in Jn 19:22 of Pilate, who certainly would not have written the inscription himself. We know: i.e., the Christian community; cf. Jn 1:14, 16.

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(A) by the Sea of Galilee.[a](B) It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas(C) (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael(D) from Cana in Galilee,(E) the sons of Zebedee,(F) and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(G)
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(H)
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(I)
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(J) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire(K) of burning coals there with fish on it,(L) and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(M) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(N) after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(O)
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(P)
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(Q)
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(R) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(S) you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(T) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(U) by which Peter would glorify God.(V) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(W)
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(X) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(Y) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(Z) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(AA) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(AB) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(AC) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(AD)
25 Jesus did many other things as well.(AE) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

2 Estaban juntos Simón Pedro, y Tomás, llamado el Dídimo, y Natanael, el que era de Caná de Galilea, y los hijos de Zebedeo, y otros dos de sus discípulos.
3 Les dice Simón: A pescar voy. Le dicen: Vamos nosotros también contigo. Fueron, y subieron en un navío; y aquella noche no tomaron nada.
4 Y venida la mañana, Jesús se puso a la ribera; mas los discípulos no entendieron que era Jesús.
5 Así que les dijo: Hijitos, ¿tenéis algo de comer? Le respondieron: No.
6 Y Jesús les dice: Echad la red a la mano derecha del navío, y hallaréis. Entonces la echaron, y no la podían en ninguna manera sacar, por la multitud de los peces.
7 Dijo entonces aquel discípulo, al cual amaba Jesús, a Pedro: El Señor es. Entonces Simón Pedro, cuando oyó que era el Señor, se ciñó la ropa, porque estaba desnudo, y se echó al mar.

13 Viene pues Jesús, y toma el pan, y les da; y asimismo del pez.
14 Esta era ya la tercera vez que Jesús se manifestaba a sus discípulos, habiendo resucitado de los muertos.
15 ¶ Y cuando hubieron comido, Jesús dijo a Simón Pedro: Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas más que éstos? Le dice: Sí Señor; tú sabes que te amo. Le dice: Apacienta mis corderos.
16 Le vuelve a decir la segunda vez: Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas? Le responde: Sí, Señor; tú sabes que te amo. Le dice: Apacienta mis ovejas.
17 Le dice la tercera vez: Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas? Se entristeció Pedro de que le dijera la tercera vez: ¿Me amas? Y le dice: Señor, tú sabes todas las cosas; tú sabes que te amo. Le dice Jesús: Apacienta mis ovejas.
18 De cierto, de cierto te digo: Cuando eras más joven, te ceñías, e ibas donde querías; mas cuando ya seas viejo, extenderás tus manos, y te ceñirá otro, y te pasará donde no quieras.
19 Y esto dijo, señalando con qué muerte había de clarificar a Dios. Y dicho esto, le dice: Sígueme.
20 ¶ Volviéndose Pedro, ve a aquel discípulo al cual amaba Jesús, que les seguía, el que también se había recostado a su pecho en la cena, y le había dicho: Señor, ¿quién es el que te ha de entregar?
21 Así que cuando Pedro vio a éste, dice a Jesús: Señor, ¿y éste, qué?
22 Le dice Jesús: Si quiero que él quede hasta que yo venga, ¿qué a ti? Sígueme tú.
23 Salió entonces este dicho entre los hermanos, que aquel discípulo no había de morir. Mas Jesús no le dijo, No morirá; sino: Si quiero que él quede hasta que yo venga ¿qué a ti?
24 Este es aquel discípulo que da testimonio de estas cosas, y escribió estas cosas; y sabemos que su testimonio es verdadero.
25 Y hay también otras muchas cosas que hizo Jesús, que si se escribieran cada una por sí, pienso que ni aun el mundo podrá contener los libros que se habrían de escribir. Amén.
