受鞭打与戏弄

19 于是彼拉多吩咐[a]把耶稣带走,鞭打了。 士兵们用荆棘编了冠冕,戴在耶稣的头上,又给他披上紫色袍子。 他们不断地来到他面前说:“万岁,犹太人的王!”又不住地用手掌打他。

彼拉多再次出来对犹太人说:“看!我把他带出来给你们,是要你们知道,我查不出他有什么罪。”

彼拉多判耶稣死刑

这时候,耶稣出来了,他戴着荆棘冠冕,披着紫色袍子。彼拉多对他们说:“看,这个人!”

祭司长们和差役们一看见耶稣,就喊叫说:“钉上十字架!钉上十字架!”

彼拉多对他们说:“你们自己把他带走钉上十字架!要知道,我查不出他有罪。”

那些犹太人回答:“我们有律法,按照这律法,他是应该死的,因为他把自己当做神的儿子。”

彼拉多一听这话,就更加惧怕了, 又进了总督府,问耶稣:“你到底是从哪里来的?”耶稣却没有回答他。 10 彼拉多就说:“你不与我说话吗?难道你不知道我有权释放你,也有权把你钉上十字架吗?”

11 耶稣回答:“如果权柄不是从上面赐给你的,你就对我没有任何权柄。所以,把我交给你的人有更大的罪。”

12 由此,彼拉多就想要释放耶稣。可是犹太人喊叫说:“你如果释放这个人,就不是凯撒的朋友了。所有把自己当做王的,就是反对凯撒的!”

13 彼拉多听了这话,就把耶稣带到外面,并在一个叫“铺石台”的地方坐上了审判席。“铺石台”希伯来[b]叫做“伽巴达”。 14 那天是逾越节的预备日,大约在中午十二点[c]彼拉多犹太人说:“看,你们的王!”

15 他们就大声喊叫:“除掉他!除掉他!把他钉上十字架!”

彼拉多问:“我可以把你们的王钉上十字架吗?”

祭司长们回答:“除了凯撒,我们没有王!”

16 于是彼拉多把耶稣交给他们去钉上十字架。

耶稣被钉十字架

他们就把耶稣带走了。 17 耶稣自己背着十字架出来,前往一个叫“骷髅地”的地方,希伯来[d]叫做“各各他”。 18 在那里,他们把耶稣钉上十字架,还把另外两个人与耶稣一起钉上十字架,这边一个,那边一个,耶稣在中间。 19 彼拉多还写了一个牌子,挂在十字架上,写的是:“拿撒勒人耶稣,犹太人的王。”

20 许多犹太人都读了这牌子,因为耶稣被钉十字架的地方离城不远,而且牌子是用希伯来文[e]、拉丁文、希腊文写的。 21 犹太人的祭司长们对彼拉多说:“请不要写‘犹太人的王’,而要写‘这个人说:我是犹太人的王。’”

22 彼拉多回答:“我所写的,我已经写了。”

23 士兵们将耶稣钉上十字架以后,把他的衣服拿来分成四份,每人一份。他们又拿了里衣,这件里衣没有接缝,从上到下由整片织成。 24 他们彼此说:“不要把它撕开,让我们抽签,看它是谁的。”这是为要应验经上的话:“他们分了我的衣服,又为我的衣裳抽签。”[f]士兵们果然做了这些事。

儿子与母亲

25 在耶稣的十字架旁边,站着他的母亲、他母亲的妹妹、克罗帕的妻子玛丽亚,以及茉大拉玛丽亚 26 耶稣看到母亲和他所爱的那门徒站在旁边,就对母亲说:“母亲[g],看哪,你的儿子!” 27 然后对那门徒说:“看哪,你的母亲!”从那时候起,那门徒就把耶稣的母亲接到自己的家里。

耶稣完成使命

28 这事以后,耶稣知道一切都已经完成了,为要应验经上的话,就说:“我渴了。” 29 那里放着一个装满酸酒的容器。他们就把蘸满了酸酒的海绵套在牛膝草上,送到他的嘴边。

30 耶稣尝了酸酒后,就说:“成了!”然后垂下头,交出了灵魂。

肋旁被扎

31 因为那天是预备日,又因为那个安息日是个大节日,那些犹太人为了不让尸体在安息日留在十字架上,就向彼拉多请求,好把他们的腿打断,把尸体拿走。 32 士兵们就来,把与耶稣一起被钉十字架的头一个人的腿打断,又把另一个人的也打断了。 33 可是,当他们来到耶稣那里,看见他已经死了,就没有打断他的腿。 34 不过有一个士兵用长矛刺入耶稣的肋旁,立刻有血和水流了出来。 35 看见这事的那人做了见证——他的见证是真实的,并且他知道他所说的是真实的——这是为了要你们也信。 36 事实上,这些事发生,是为要应验经上的话:“他的骨头,一根也不被折断。”[h] 37 另有一段经文也说:“他们将看见自己所刺的那一位。”[i]

安葬

38 这些事以后,亚利马太约瑟请求彼拉多,要领取耶稣的遗体。约瑟也是耶稣的门徒,不过是暗暗地做门徒,因为他怕那些犹太人。彼拉多准许了,他就来把耶稣的遗体领去。 39 当初在夜里来到耶稣那里的尼克迪莫也来了。他带着没药和沉香的混合香料,大约三十公斤[j] 40 他们领了耶稣的遗体,按犹太人预备葬礼的规矩,用细麻布条和香料把遗体缠裹起来。 41 耶稣被钉十字架的地方有一个园子,园子里有一座新墓穴,从来没有安放过人。 42 因为那天是犹太人的预备日,那墓穴又在附近,他们就把耶稣安放在那里。

士兵果然这样作了。 25 站在耶稣十字架旁边的,有他母亲和他母亲的姊妹,还有高罗巴的妻子马利亚,和抹大拉的马利亚。 26 耶稣看见母亲,又看见他所爱的那门徒站在旁边,就对母亲说:“母亲(“母亲”原文作“妇人”),看!你的儿子。” 27 然后他对那门徒说:“看!你的母亲。”从那时起,那门徒就把她接到自己的家里去了。

耶稣死时的情形(B)

28 这事以后,耶稣知道一切都已经成就了,为了要使经上的话应验,就说:“我渴了。” 29 在那里有一个坛子,盛满了酸酒,他们就拿海绵浸了酸酒,绑在牛膝草上,送到他的口里。 30 耶稣尝了那酸酒,说:“成了!”就低下头,断了气。

31 因为那天是预备日,为了要避免尸体在安息日留在十字架上(因为那安息日是个重要的日子),犹太人就请求彼拉多打断那些被钉十字架的人的腿,把他们拿下来。 32 于是士兵来了,把和耶稣一同钉十字架的那两个人的腿都先后打断了。 33 他们来到耶稣那里,看见他已经死了,就没有打断他的腿。 34 但是有一个士兵用枪刺他的肋旁,立刻有血和水流出来。 35 那看见这事的人已经作证了,他的见证是真实的,他也知道自己所说的是实在的,使你们也相信。 36 这些事的发生,是要应验经上所说的:“他的骨头,一根也不可折断。” 37 另有一处经文说:“他们要仰望自己所刺的人。”

耶稣葬在新坟墓里(C)

38 这些事以后,有一个亚利马太人约瑟来求彼拉多,要领耶稣的身体;他因为怕犹太人,就暗暗地作耶稣的门徒。彼拉多批准了,他便把耶稣的身体领去。 39 从前夜间来见耶稣的尼哥德慕也来了,带着没药和沉香混合的香料,约有三十二公斤。 40 他们领取了耶稣的身体,照着犹太人的葬礼的规例,用细麻布和香料把他裹好。 41 在耶稣钉十字架的地方,有一个园子,园里有一个新的墓穴,是从来没有葬过人的。 42 因为那天是犹太人的预备日,又因为那墓穴就在附近,他们就把耶稣葬在那里。

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(A)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(B) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) And they slapped him in the face.(D)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(F) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(I)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(K)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(M) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(P) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(R) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.(T)

“Here is your king,”(U) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(V)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(W)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(X) he went out to the place of the Skull(Y) (which in Aramaic(Z) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(AA)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(AB) the king of the jews.(AC) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(AD) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(AE)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(AF) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.”[a](AG)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(AH) of Jesus stood his mother,(AI) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(AJ) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(AK) there, and the disciple whom he loved(AL) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(AM)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(AN) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(AO) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(AP) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(AQ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(AR) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(AS) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(AT) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(AU) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AV) 35 The man who saw it(AW) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AX) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AY) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AZ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](BA)

The Burial of Jesus(BB)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(BC) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(BD) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(BE) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(BF) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(BG) and since the tomb was nearby,(BH) they laid Jesus there.

19 Pilate gave orders for Jesus to be beaten with a whip. The soldiers made a crown out of thorn branches and put it on Jesus. Then they put a purple robe on him. They came up to him and said, “Hey, you king of the Jews!” They also hit him with their fists.

Once again Pilate went out. This time he said, “I will have Jesus brought out to you again. Then you can see for yourselves that I have not found him guilty.”

Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, “Here is the man!”[a]

When the chief priests and the temple police saw him, they yelled, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

Pilate told them, “You take him and nail him to a cross! I don't find him guilty of anything.”

The crowd replied, “He claimed to be the Son of God! Our law says that he must be put to death.”

When Pilate heard this, he was terrified. He went back inside and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer.

10 “Why won't you answer my question?” Pilate asked. “Don't you know I have the power to let you go free or to nail you to a cross?”

11 (A) Jesus replied, “If God had not given you the power, you couldn't do anything at all to me. But the one who handed me over to you did something even worse.”

12 Then Pilate wanted to set Jesus free. But the crowd again yelled, “If you set this man free, you are no friend of the Emperor! Anyone who claims to be a king is an enemy of the Emperor.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out. Then he sat down on the judge's bench at the place known as “The Stone Pavement.” In Aramaic this pavement is called “Gabbatha.” 14 It was about noon on the day before Passover, and Pilate said to the crowd, “Look at your king!”

15 “Kill him! Kill him!” they yelled. “Nail him to a cross!”

“So you want me to nail your king to a cross?” Pilate asked.

The chief priests replied, “The Emperor is our king!” 16 Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be nailed to a cross.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.32-44; Mark 15.21-32; Luke 23.26-43)

Jesus was taken away, 17 and he carried his cross to a place known as “The Skull.”[b] In Aramaic this place is called “Golgotha.” 18 There Jesus was nailed to the cross, and on each side of him a man was also nailed to a cross.

19 Pilate ordered the charge against Jesus to be written on a board and put above the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” 20 The words were written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

The place where Jesus was taken wasn't far from the city, and many of the people read the charge against him. 21 So the chief priests went to Pilate and said, “Why did you write that he is King of the Jews? You should have written, ‘He claimed to be King of the Jews.’ ”

22 But Pilate told them, “What is written will not be changed!”

23 After the soldiers had nailed Jesus to the cross, they divided up his clothes into four parts, one for each of them. But his outer garment was made from a single piece of cloth, and it did not have any seams. 24 (B) The soldiers said to each other, “Let's not rip it apart. We will gamble to see who gets it.” This happened so the Scriptures would come true, which say,

“They divided up my clothes
and gambled
    for my garments.”

The soldiers then did what they had decided.

25 Jesus' mother stood beside his cross with her sister and Mary the wife of Clopas. Mary Magdalene was standing there too.[c] 26 When Jesus saw his mother and his favorite disciple with her, he said to his mother, “This man is now your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “She is now your mother.” From then on, that disciple took her into his own home.

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; Luke 23.44-49)

28 (C) Jesus knew that he had now finished his work. And in order to make the Scriptures come true, he said, “I am thirsty!” 29 A jar of cheap wine was there. Someone then soaked a sponge with the wine and held it up to Jesus' mouth on the stem of a hyssop plant. 30 After Jesus drank the wine, he said, “Everything is done!” He bowed his head and died.

A Spear Is Stuck in Jesus' Side

31 The next day would be both a Sabbath and the Passover. It was a special day for the Jewish people,[d] and they did not want the bodies to stay on the crosses during this day. So they asked Pilate to break the men's legs[e] and take their bodies down. 32 The soldiers first broke the legs of the other two men who were nailed there. 33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and they did not break his legs.

34 One of the soldiers stuck his spear into Jesus' side, and blood and water came out. 35 We know this is true, because it was told by someone who saw it happen. Now you can have faith too. 36 (D) All this happened so that the Scriptures would come true, which say, “No bone of his body will be broken” 37 (E) and “They will see the one in whose side they stuck a spear.”

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; Luke 23.50-56)

38 Joseph from Arimathea was one of Jesus' disciples. He had kept it secret though, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. But now he asked Pilate to let him have Jesus' body. Pilate gave him permission, and Joseph took it down from the cross.

39 (F) Nicodemus also came with about 30 kilograms of spices made from myrrh and aloes. This was the same Nicodemus who had visited Jesus one night.[f] 40 The two men wrapped the body in a linen cloth, together with the spices, which was how the Jewish people buried their dead. 41 In the place where Jesus had been nailed to a cross, there was a garden with a tomb that had never been used. 42 The tomb was nearby, and since it was the time to prepare for the Sabbath, they were in a hurry to put Jesus' body there.
