19 那時，大祭司查問耶穌有關他的門徒和他的教訓的事。 20 耶穌對大祭司說：“我向來對世人講話都是公開的，我常常在會堂和聖殿裡，就是在所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人，暗地裡我並沒有講甚麼。 21 你為甚麼查問我呢？問問那些聽過我講話的人吧，他們知道我講過甚麼。” 22 耶穌說了這些話，站在旁邊的一個差役，就打他一巴掌，說：“你竟敢這樣回答大祭司嗎？” 23 耶穌對他說：“如果我講錯了，你可以指證錯在哪裡；如果我講對了，你為甚麼打我呢？” 24 亞那仍然綁著耶穌，把他押到大祭司該亞法那裡去。

25 西門．彼得仍然站在火旁取暖。有人對他說：“你不也是他的門徒嗎？”彼得否認說：“我不是。” 26 有一個大祭司的僕人，就是彼得削掉耳朵的那個人的親戚，說：“我不是看見你跟他在園子裡嗎？” 27 彼得又否認，立刻雞就叫了。

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
18 After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees. 2 Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples. 3 The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.
4 Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.
5 “Jesus the Nazarene,”[a] they replied.
“I am he,”[b] Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) 6 As Jesus said “I am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground! 7 Once more he asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
8 “I told you that I am he,” Jesus said. “And since I am the one you want, let these others go.” 9 He did this to fulfill his own statement: “I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”[c]
10 Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave. 11 But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?”
Jesus at the High Priest’s House
12 So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up. 13 First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.[d] 14 Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”
Peter’s First Denial
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus. 16 Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. 17 The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?”
“No,” he said, “I am not.”
18 Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them. 20 Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people[e] gather. I have not spoken in secret. 21 Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”
22 Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”
24 Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials
25 Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”
26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?” 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus’ Trial before Pilate
28 Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor.[f] His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the Passover. 29 So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, “What is your charge against this man?”
30 “We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.
31 “Then take him away and judge him by your own law,” Pilate told them.
“Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone,” the Jewish leaders replied. 32 (This fulfilled Jesus’ prediction about the way he would die.[g])
33 Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.
34 Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”
37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?”
Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime. 39 But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?”
40 But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)

18 Dopo aver detto queste cose, Gesù attraversò il torrente Cèdron e, insieme con i discepoli, entrò in un orto dʼulivi. 2 Giuda, il traditore, conosceva bene quel posto, perché Gesù vi era andato spesso con i discepoli.
3 I capi sacerdoti e i Farisei avevano dato a Giuda un drappello di soldati di scorta. Tutti insieme entrarono nellʼorto degli ulivi con armi, torce e lanterne.
4-5 Allora, Gesù, che sapeva perfettamente tutto ciò che doveva accadere, si fece avanti e domandò: «Chi cercate?»
«Gesù di Nazaret», risposero. «Sono io», disse Gesù. 6 A queste parole tutti indietreggiarono e caddero a terra.
7 Di nuovo Gesù domandò: «Chi cercate?»
E quelli: «Gesù di Nazaret».
8 «Ve lʼho già detto che sono io!» disse Gesù. «Se cercate me, lasciate andare questi altri». 9 Sʼadempiva così la profezia fatta da Gesù: «Di quelli che mi hai dato, non ne ho perduto nessuno».
10 Allora Simon Pietro sfoderò una spada e mozzò di netto lʼorecchio destro di Malco, servo del sommo sacerdote.
11 Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: «Metti via quella spada! Bisogna che beva il calice che mio Padre mi ha dato».
12 Allora i soldati, il capitano e le guardie, presero Gesù e lo legarono. 13 Prima lo portarono da Anna, suocero di Caifa, che era in carica di sommo sacerdote quellʼanno. 14 Caifa era quello che aveva detto agli altri capi giudei: «È meglio che sia un uomo solo a morire per il popolo». 15 Intanto Simon Pietro seguiva Gesù da lontano, insieme con un altro discepolo, che conosceva il sommo sacerdote. Questʼaltro discepolo riuscì ad entrare con Gesù nel cortile del palazzo del sommo sacerdote; 16 Pietro, invece, rimase fuori dal cancello. Allora lʼaltro discepolo parlò alla portinaia, e così anche Pietro poté entrare. 17 La donna però chiese a Pietro: «Non sei anche tu un discepolo di Gesù?»
«No», rispose lui.
18 Intanto i servi e le guardie avevano acceso un fuoco e se ne stavano lì attorno a scaldarsi, perché faceva freddo. Anche Pietro si mise lì in piedi con loro, vicino al fuoco.
19 Intanto, il sommo sacerdote incominciò ad interrogare Gesù; gli faceva domande sui suoi discepoli e su ciò che insegnava.
20 Gesù rispose: «Dappertutto sanno di che cosa ho parlato, perché ho sempre insegnato nelle sinagoghe e nel tempio, dove si riuniscono tutti i Giudei. Non ho mai detto nulla in privato, che non avessi già detto in pubblico. 21 Perché interroghi me? Chiedi, invece, a quelli che mi hanno ascoltato. Ce ne sono alcuni anche qui, e sanno bene che cosa ho detto!»
22 Non aveva finito di parlare che uno dei soldati presenti lo colpì con uno schiaffo: «È questo il modo di rispondere al sommo sacerdote?» urlò.
23 «Se ho detto qualcosa di male, dimostralo!» rispose Gesù. «Se invece ho detto la verità, perché mi colpisci?»
24 Allora Anna mandò Gesù, sempre legato, dal sommo sacerdote Caifa. 25 Simon Pietro, intanto, era ancora vicino al fuoco. Ad un certo punto gli chiesero di nuovo: «Ma non sei anche tu uno dei suoi discepoli?»
«Neanche per sogno!» rispose Pietro.
26 Ma uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quellʼuomo a cui Pietro aveva tagliato lʼorecchio, gli disse: «Mi pare dʼaverti visto con Gesù nellʼorto degli Ulivi…»
27 Di nuovo Pietro negò. In quel momento un gallo cantò.
28 Lʼinterrogatorio di Gesù alla presenza di Caifa terminò alle prime ore del mattino. Dopo, lo portarono al Pretorio, il palazzo del governatore romano. I suoi accusatori non vollero entrare; per non contaminarsi, dicevano, altrimenti non avrebbero potuto mangiare lʼagnello di Pasqua. 29 Così, il governatore Pilato uscì e chiese loro: «Qual è lʼaccusa contro questʼuomo? Di che cosa lʼincolpate?»
30 «Non lʼavremmo arrestato, se non era un criminale!» risposero gli altri risentiti.
31 «Allora portatevelo via e giudicatelo voi, secondo le vostre leggi!» rispose Pilato.
«Ma… vogliamo che sia condannato a morte», replicarono, «e per farlo ci vuole il tuo consenso».
32 Così si avveravano le parole di Gesù, che aveva predetto in che modo sarebbe stato ucciso.
33 Allora Pilato rientrò nel palazzo e chiamò Gesù: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» gli chiese.
34 «Me lo chiedi tu, di tua iniziativa, o te lo hanno detto gli altri di me?» chiese a sua volta Gesù.
35 «Sono, forse, un Giudeo?» ribatté Pilato. «È stata la tua gente e i capi sacerdoti a portarti qui. Perché? Che cosa hai fatto?»
36 Allora Gesù rispose: «Io non sono un re di questo mondo. Se lo fossi, le mie guardie avrebbero già combattuto, per non farmi arrestare dai capi giudei. Ma il mio regno non è di questa terra!»
37 «Allora, tu sei un re?» disse Pilato.
«Sì», rispose Gesù. «Sono nato per questo. Sono venuto per portare la verità al mondo, e tutti quelli che amano la verità sono miei seguaci».
38 «Ma che cosʼè la verità?!» esclamò Pilato. Poi uscì di nuovo e disse al popolo: «Questʼuomo non ha fatto nulla di male. 39 Siccome, ogni anno, in occasione della Pasqua, è vostra abitudine chiedermi il rilascio di un condannato, che ne direste se vi liberassi il re dei Giudei?»
40 Ma tutti gridarono: «No! Non liberare lui, vogliamo Barabba!» Barabba era un brigante.
