Niet heersen, maar dienen
13 Jezus wist dat voor Hem de tijd was gekomen om uit deze wereld weg te gaan. Hij zou teruggaan naar de Vader. Vóór de dag van het Paasfeest hield Jezus al heel veel van zijn vrienden. En Hij hield van hen tot aan het einde.
2+3 De duivel had Judas Iskariot, de zoon van Simon, al opgestookt om Jezus te verraden. Jezus wist dat de Vader Hem alle macht had gegeven. Hij wist dat Hij bij God vandaan kwam en nu weer naar God zou teruggaan. 4 Maar Hij stond op van tafel, trok zijn bovenkleren uit en deed een linnen doek als schort om zoals een dienaar of een slaaf dat doet. 5 Hij goot water in een waskom en begon de voeten van zijn leerlingen te wassen. Hij droogde ze af met de doek die Hij om had. 6 Toen Hij bij Simon Petrus kwam, zei Simon tegen Hem: "Heer, wilt Ú mijn voeten wassen?" 7 Jezus antwoordde Hem: "Nu begrijp je nog niet wat Ik doe, maar later zul je het begrijpen." 8 Petrus zei tegen Hem: "Geen sprake van! Ik wil niet dat U mijn voeten wast!" Jezus antwoordde hem: "Als Ik je voeten niet mag wassen, kun je niet bij Mij horen." 9 Simon Petrus zei tegen Hem: "Heer, was dan niet alleen mijn voeten, maar ook mijn handen en mijn hoofd!" 10 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Als je je gewassen hebt, hoef je alleen je voeten te wassen, want je bent al helemaal schoon. Jullie zijn schoon en zuiver, maar niet allemaal." 11 Jezus wist namelijk wie Hem zou verraden. Daarom zei Hij: 'Jullie zijn niet allemaal schoon en zuiver.'
12 Toen Hij hun voeten had gewassen, trok Hij zijn bovenkleren weer aan. Toen ging Hij bij hen aan tafel zitten. Hij vroeg: "Begrijpen jullie wat Ik heb gedaan? 13 Jullie noemen Mij 'Meester' en 'Heer'. Dat is goed, want dat BEN IK ook.[a] 14 Ik, jullie Heer en Meester, heb dus jullie voeten gewassen. Daarom moeten jullie ook elkaars voeten wassen.[b] 15 Want Ik heb jullie een voorbeeld gegeven. Jullie moeten hetzelfde doen als Ik. 16 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat een dienaar niet belangrijker is dan zijn heer. En een boodschapper is niet belangrijker dan de man die hem heeft gestuurd. 17 Het is heerlijk voor jullie als jullie dat begrijpen en je ook zo gedragen.
18 Ik heb het niet over jullie allemaal. Ik weet wie Ik heb uitgekozen. Maar wat in de Boeken al is gezegd, gaat nu gebeuren: In de Psalmen staat: 'Hij die altijd met Mij at, is mijn vijand geworden.' 19 Ik zeg het jullie nu, van tevoren, vóórdat het gebeurt. Zo zullen jullie, op het moment dat dit gebeurt, geloven dat IK het BEN. 20 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: als je iemand ontvangt die door Mij is gestuurd, ontvang je eigenlijk Mij. En als je Mij ontvangt, ontvang je eigenlijk Hem die Mij gestuurd heeft."
Jezus waarschuwt Judas
21 Nadat Jezus dat had gezegd, werd Hij verdrietig. Hij zei: "Luister goed! Eén van jullie zal Mij verraden." 22 De leerlingen keken elkaar aan, onzeker over wie Hij het had. 23 Jezus' beste vriend zat vlak naast Jezus aan tafel. 24 Simon Petrus zei tegen hem: "Vraag jij eens aan Jezus over wie Hij het heeft?" 25 De leerling boog zich dicht naar Jezus toe en vroeg Hem: "Heer, wie bedoelt U?" 26 Jezus antwoordde: "Ik bedoel de man aan wie Ik dit stuk brood geef nadat Ik het ingedoopt heb." Hij doopte een stuk brood in de saus en gaf het aan Judas Iskariot, de zoon van Simon. 27 Toen Judas dit stuk brood aanpakte, kwam de duivel in hem. Jezus zei tegen hem: "Ga maar gauw doen wat je moet gaan doen." 28 Maar niemand van de anderen aan tafel begreep waarom Hij dat zei. 29 Ze dachten dat Jezus bedoelde dat Judas iets moest gaan kopen wat ze voor het feest nodig hadden. Of dat hij iets aan de arme mensen moest gaan geven. Dat dachten ze omdat Judas altijd het geld bewaarde. 30 Judas pakte het stuk brood aan en vertrok onmiddellijk. Het was inmiddels nacht.
Jezus neemt alvast afscheid van de leerlingen
31 Toen Judas was vertrokken, zei Jezus: "Nu zullen jullie zien hoe machtig de Mensenzoon is. En daaraan zal ook te zien zijn hoe machtig God is. 32 God zal Hem eren en Hij zal Hem in Zichzelf eren. 33 Kinderen, Ik ben nog maar heel even bij jullie. Jullie zullen Mij zoeken, maar zoals Ik al tegen de Joden heb gezegd: waar Ik heen ga, kunnen jullie niet komen. Dat zeg Ik nu ook tegen jullie.
34 Ik geef jullie een nieuwe wet: houd net zoveel van elkaar, als Ik van jullie.[c] 35 Als jullie veel van elkaar houden, zal iedereen kunnen zien dat jullie mijn leerlingen zijn."
Jezus waarschuwt Petrus
36 Simon Petrus vroeg aan Jezus: "Heer, waar gaat U heen?" Jezus antwoordde: "Waar Ik heen ga, kun jij Mij nu nog niet volgen. Jij zal Mij pas later volgen." 37 Petrus vroeg Hem: "Heer, waarom kan ik U nu niet volgen? Ik heb mijn leven voor U over!" 38 Jezus antwoordde: "Jij hebt je leven voor Mij over? Luister goed! Voordat de haan kraait, zul je drie keer gezegd hebben dat je Mij niet kent."

- Johannes 13:13 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het Oude Testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.
- Johannes 13:14 In die tijd was voeten wassen het werk van een slaaf. Hiermee bedoelde Jezus dat ze elkaar moesten dienen en zich niet te goed moesten voelen voor sommige taken.
- Johannes 13:34 De 'oude' wet was, dat je net zoveel van je broeders, je volksgenoten, moest houden als van jezelf. Lees Matteüs 22:34-40. Maar hier zegt Jezus dat ze net zoveel van elkaar moesten houden als dat Hij Zelf doet, dus met goddelijke, opofferende liefde.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
13 It was just before the Passover Festival.(A) Jesus knew that the hour had come(B) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.(C) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.(D) 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,(E) and that he had come from God(F) and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(G) 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(H) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(I)
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(J) though not every one of you.”(K) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(L) and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(M) and ‘Lord,’(N) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(O) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(P) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(Q) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(R)
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you;(S) I know those I have chosen.(T) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(U) ‘He who shared my bread(V) has turned[a](W) against me.’[b](X)
19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(Y) that I am who I am.(Z) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(AA)
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(AB) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(AC)
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(AD) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(AE)
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(AF) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(AG)
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(AH) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(AI) or to give something to the poor.(AJ) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(AK)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AL)
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(AM) is glorified(AN) and God is glorified in him.(AO) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(AP) and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(AQ)
34 “A new command(AR) I give you: Love one another.(AS) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(AT) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(AU)
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(AV)
Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(AW) but you will follow later.”(AX)
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(AY)

32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(AD) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(AE)
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(AF) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(AG)
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(AH) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(AI) or to give something to the poor.(AJ) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(AK)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AL)
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(AM) is glorified(AN) and God is glorified in him.(AO) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(AP) and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(AQ)
34 “A new command(AR) I give you: Love one another.(AS) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(AT) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(AU)
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(AV)
Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(AW) but you will follow later.”(AX)
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(AY)

13 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
