12 (A)Gesù dunque, sei giorni prima della Pasqua, andò a Betania dov’era Lazzaro [, colui che era morto e] che egli[a] aveva risuscitato dai morti. 2 Qui gli offrirono una cena; Marta serviva e Lazzaro era uno di quelli che erano a tavola con lui. 3 Allora Maria, presa una libbra d’olio profumato, di nardo puro, di gran valore, unse i piedi di Gesù e glieli asciugò con i suoi capelli; e la casa fu piena del profumo dell’olio. 4 Ma Giuda Iscariota, [figlio di Simone,] uno dei suoi discepoli, che stava per tradirlo, disse: 5 «Perché non si è venduto quest’olio per trecento denari e non si sono dati ai poveri?» 6 Diceva così non perché si curasse dei poveri, ma perché era ladro, e tenendo la borsa ne portava via quello che vi si metteva dentro. 7 Gesù dunque disse: «Lasciala stare; ella lo ha conservato per il giorno della mia sepoltura[b]. 8 Poiché i poveri li avete sempre con voi; ma me, non mi avete sempre».
9 Una gran folla di Giudei seppe dunque che egli era lì; e ci andarono non solo a motivo di Gesù, ma anche per vedere Lazzaro che egli aveva risuscitato dai morti. 10 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti deliberarono di far morire anche Lazzaro, 11 perché a causa sua molti Giudei andavano e credevano in Gesù.
Ingresso trionfale di Gesù a Gerusalemme
12 (B)Il giorno seguente, la gran folla che era venuta alla festa, udito che Gesù veniva a Gerusalemme, 13 prese dei rami di palme, uscì a incontrarlo e gridava: «Osanna! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore[c], il re d’Israele!» 14 Gesù, trovato un asinello, vi montò sopra, come sta scritto:
15 «Non temere, figlia di Sion! Ecco, il tuo re viene, montato sopra un puledro d’asina!»[d]
16 I suoi discepoli non compresero subito queste cose; ma quando Gesù fu glorificato, allora si ricordarono che queste cose erano state scritte di lui e che essi gliele avevano fatte.
17 La folla dunque, che era con lui quando aveva chiamato Lazzaro fuori dal sepolcro e lo aveva risuscitato dai morti, ne rendeva testimonianza. 18 Per questo la folla gli andò incontro, perché avevano udito che egli aveva fatto quel segno. 19 Perciò i farisei dicevano tra di loro: «Vedete che non guadagnate nulla? Ecco, il mondo gli corre dietro!»
Alcuni Greci desiderano vedere Gesù
20 (C)Ora tra quelli che salivano alla festa per adorare c’erano alcuni Greci. 21 Questi dunque, avvicinatisi a Filippo, che era di Betsàida di Galilea, gli fecero questa richiesta: «Signore, vorremmo vedere Gesù». 22 Filippo andò a dirlo ad Andrea; e [a loro volta] Andrea e Filippo andarono a dirlo a Gesù.
Gesù annuncia la sua crocifissione
23 (D)Gesù rispose loro, dicendo: «L’ora è venuta, che il Figlio dell’uomo deve essere glorificato. 24 In verità, in verità vi dico che se il granello di frumento caduto in terra non muore, rimane solo; ma se muore, produce molto frutto. 25 Chi ama la sua vita la perde[e], e chi odia la sua vita in questo mondo la conserverà in vita eterna. 26 Se uno mi serve, mi segua, e là dove sono io sarà anche il mio servitore; se uno mi serve, il Padre l’onorerà. 27 Ora l’animo mio è turbato[f]; e che dirò? Padre, salvami da quest’ora[g]? Ma è per questo che sono venuto incontro a quest’ora. 28 Padre, glorifica il tuo nome!» Allora venne una voce dal cielo: «L’ho glorificato e lo glorificherò di nuovo!»
29 Perciò la folla che era presente e aveva udito, diceva che era stato un tuono. Altri dicevano: «Gli ha parlato un angelo».
30 Gesù disse: «Questa voce non è venuta per me, ma per voi. 31 Ora avviene il giudizio di questo mondo; ora sarà cacciato fuori il principe di questo mondo; 32 e io, quando sarò innalzato dalla terra, attirerò tutti a me». 33 Così diceva per indicare di qual morte doveva morire. 34 La folla quindi[h] gli rispose: «Noi abbiamo udito dalla legge che il Cristo dimora in eterno; come mai dunque tu dici che il Figlio dell’uomo dev’essere innalzato? Chi è questo Figlio dell’uomo?» 35 Gesù dunque disse loro: «La luce è ancora per poco tempo tra di voi. Camminate mentre avete la luce, affinché non vi sorprendano le tenebre; chi cammina nelle tenebre non sa dove va. 36 Mentre avete la luce, credete nella luce, affinché diventiate figli di luce». Gesù disse queste cose, poi se ne andò e si nascose da loro.
37 (E)Sebbene avesse fatto tanti segni in loro presenza, non credevano in lui, 38 affinché si adempisse la parola detta dal profeta Isaia:
«Signore, chi ha creduto alla nostra predicazione? A chi è stato rivelato il braccio del Signore?»[i]
39 Perciò non potevano credere, per la ragione detta ancora da Isaia:
40 «Egli ha accecato i loro occhi e ha indurito i loro cuori, affinché non vedano con gli occhi, non comprendano con il cuore, non si convertano e io non li guarisca»[j].
41 Queste cose disse Isaia, perché vide[k] la gloria di lui e di lui parlò.
42 Ciò nonostante molti, anche tra i capi, credettero in lui; ma a causa dei farisei non lo confessavano, per non essere espulsi dalla sinagoga; 43 perché amarono la gloria degli uomini più della gloria di Dio.
44 Ma Gesù ad alta voce esclamò: «Chi crede in me, crede non in me, ma in colui che mi ha mandato; 45 e chi vede me, vede colui che mi ha mandato. 46 Io son venuto come luce nel mondo, affinché chiunque crede in me non rimanga nelle tenebre. 47 Se uno ode le mie parole e non le osserva[l], io non lo giudico; perché io non son venuto a giudicare il mondo, ma a salvare il mondo. 48 Chi mi respinge e non riceve le mie parole ha chi lo giudica; la parola che ho annunciata è quella che lo giudicherà nell’ultimo giorno. 49 Perché io non ho parlato di mio; ma il Padre, che mi ha mandato, mi ha comandato lui quello che devo dire e di cui devo parlare; 50 e so che il suo comandamento è vita eterna. Le cose dunque che io dico, le dico così come il Padre me le ha dette».

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)
12 Six days before the Passover,(B) Jesus came to Bethany,(C) where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served,(D) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume;(E) she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.(F) And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,(G) objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.[b]” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(H) he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(I) 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c](J) but you will not always have me.”
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(K) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(L) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(M)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(N)
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches(O) and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna![d]”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”(Q)
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.(S) Only after Jesus was glorified(T) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him(U) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(V) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(W)
Jesus Predicts His Death
20 Now there were some Greeks(X) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(Y) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 Jesus replied, “The hour(Z) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(AA) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(AB) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(AC) for eternal life.(AD) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(AE) My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 “Now my soul is troubled,(AF) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(AG) save me from this hour’?(AH) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven,(AI) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(AJ) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(AK) now the prince of this world(AL) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[g] from the earth,(AM) will draw all people to myself.”(AN) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(AP) that the Messiah will remain forever,(AQ) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AR) must be lifted up’?(AS) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(AT) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(AU) before darkness overtakes you.(AV) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AW) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AX)
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AY) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[i](BA)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(BB) and spoke about him.(BC)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(BD) But because of the Pharisees(BE) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(BF) 43 for they loved human praise(BG) more than praise from God.(BH)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(BI) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(BJ) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(BK) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(BL) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(BM) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(BN) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(BO) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(BP)

12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

The Anointing at Bethany(A)

4 But one of His disciples, (F)Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for [b]three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (G)had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; [c]she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 For (H)the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, (I)whom He had raised from the dead. 10 (J)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 (K)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry(L)
12 (M)The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
(N)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
14 (O)Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear(P) not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

Look, the world has gone after Him!”
The Fruitful Grain of Wheat
20 Now there (V)were certain Greeks among those (W)who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, (X)who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 But Jesus answered them, saying, (Y)“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (Z)unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [d]grain. 25 (AA)He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (AB)follow Me; and (AC)where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

(AN)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (AO)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (AP)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (AQ)was hidden from them.
Who Has Believed Our Report?
37 But although He had done so many (AR)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
(AS)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
40 “He(AT) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(AU)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”
41 (AV)These things Isaiah said [f]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Walk in the Light
42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (AW)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (AX)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
