拉撒路之死
11 有一个叫拉撒路的病人，住在伯大尼，就是玛丽亚和她的姐姐[a]玛妲住的村子。 2 这玛丽亚就是用香液膏抹主，又用自己的头发擦他脚的那一个。是她的弟弟拉撒路患了病。 3 姐妹俩派人到耶稣那里说：“主啊，你看，你所爱的人患了病。”
4 耶稣听了就说：“这病不至于死，而是为了神的荣耀，好使神的儿子由此得荣耀。” 5 耶稣一向爱玛妲和她的妹妹，以及拉撒路。 6 然而当他听说拉撒路患了病，还继续在原来的地方住了两天， 7 此后才对门徒说：“我们再到犹太去吧。”
8 门徒们说：“拉比，近来犹太人想用石头砸死你，你还再到那里去吗？”
9 耶稣回答：“白天不是有十二个小时吗？人如果在白天行走，就不会绊倒，因为他看见这世界的光。 10 但人如果在黑夜里行走，就会绊倒，因为在他里面没有光。” 11 耶稣讲了这些话，然后对他们说：“我们的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去叫醒他。”
12 门徒们就对他说：“主啊，他如果是睡着了，就有救了！”
13 其实耶稣说的是拉撒路的死，他们却以为他说的是睡觉休息。 14 于是耶稣明确地告诉他们：“拉撒路死了！ 15 我为你们欢喜，因为我不在那里，好使你们可以相信。现在我们到他那里去吧。”
16 那叫迪杜马[b]的多马，对其他门徒说：“我们也去吧，让我们与主[c]一起死！”
复活与生命
17 耶稣到了，知道拉撒路在坟墓里已经有四天了。 18 伯大尼离耶路撒冷不远，约有三公里[d]。 19 许多犹太人到玛妲和玛丽亚那里去，为了她们弟弟的事安慰她们。 20 玛妲一听说耶稣来了，就去迎接他。玛丽亚却仍然坐在家里。
21 玛妲对耶稣说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。 22 不过我知道，即使是现在，你无论向神求什么，神都将赐给你的。”
23 耶稣对她说：“你弟弟会复活的。”
24 玛妲说：“我知道在末日复活的时候，他会复活。”
25 耶稣对她说：“我就是复活，我就是生命。信我的人，即使死了，也将要活。 26 所有活着而信我的人绝不会死，直到永远。你信这话吗？”
27 玛妲说：“是的，主啊！我相信你是基督，是神的儿子，就是要到世界上来的那一位。”
耶稣流泪
28 玛妲说了这[e]话，就回去叫她的妹妹玛丽亚，悄悄地说：“老师来到这里，叫你过去。”
29 玛丽亚一听，就立即起来，往耶稣那里去。 30 当时，耶稣还没有进村子，仍在玛妲迎接他的地方。 31 那些在玛丽亚家里安慰她的犹太人，看见她匆忙起身出去，以为[f]她要到坟墓那里去哭，就跟着她。
32 玛丽亚到了耶稣那里，一看见他，就俯伏在他的脚前，说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。”
33 耶稣看见玛丽亚在哭，陪她一起来的犹太人也在哭，就灵里愤怒，内心烦扰。 34 他问：“你们把他安放在哪里？”
他们回答说：“主啊，请来看。”
35 耶稣流泪了。
36 犹太人就说：“你看，他多么爱拉撒路！” 37 但是其中有些人说：“这个人既然开了瞎子的眼睛，难道就不能使拉撒路不死吗？”
使拉撒路复活
38 耶稣自己里面再次感到愤怒，来到坟墓那里。那坟墓是个洞穴，有一块石头放置在洞口。 39 耶稣吩咐：“把石头挪开。”
死者的姐姐玛妲说：“主啊，他已经发臭了，因为是第四天了。”
40 耶稣对她说：“我不是对你说过，你如果信，就会看见神的荣耀吗？”
41 于是他们把[g]石头挪开。耶稣向上举目，说：“父啊，我感谢你，因为你已经垂听了我。 42 我知道你总是在垂听我，但我这么说，是为了这些站在周围的民众，好让他们相信是你差派了我。” 43 耶稣说了这些话，就大声呼唤：“拉撒路，出来！” 44 那死了的人就出来了；手脚缠着布条，脸上包着头巾。耶稣对他们说：“解开他，让他走！”
阴谋杀害耶稣
45 来到玛丽亚那里的许多犹太人，看到耶稣所做的事，就信了耶稣。 46 然而，其中有些人到法利赛人那里去，向他们报告耶稣所行的事。
47 于是祭司长们和法利赛人召集了议会，说：“这个人行了很多神迹，我们该做什么呢？ 48 如果任凭他这样下去，大家都会信他，罗马人就会来，夺取我们的圣地和国家！”
49 其中有一个人叫该亚法，是当年的大祭司，对他们说：“你们什么都不懂！ 50 也不想一想，一个人替民众死，免得全民族灭亡，这对你们[h]是有益处的。” 51 他说这话不是出于自己，只因他是当年的大祭司，就预言了耶稣要替全民族而死； 52 而且不仅是替犹太民族死，也是要把神的那些四散的儿女都召集合一。 53 从那天起，他们就商议要把耶稣杀掉。 54 因此，耶稣不再公开地在犹太人当中行事[i]，而是离开那里，到旷野附近的地方，进了一个叫以法莲的城，在那里与门徒们住下了。
55 犹太人的逾越节快到了。许多人从乡下上耶路撒冷去，要在节日前洁净自己。 56 他们寻找耶稣，站在圣殿里彼此谈论说：“你们怎么看，他绝不会来过节吧？” 57 原来，祭司长们和法利赛人早就下令，如果有人知道耶稣在哪里，就要报告，好抓住他。

4 ਜਦੋਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਹਿਮਾਮਈ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਆਈ ਹੈ।” 5 ਯਿਸੂ, ਮਰਿਯਮ, ਮਾਰਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। 6 ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਿ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਬੜਾ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਹ ਸੀ, ਉੱਥੇ ਦੋ ਦਿਨ ਤੱਕ ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਰੁਕ ਗਿਆ। 7 ਤਦ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਯਹੂਦਿਯਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।”
8 ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ! ਥੋੜਾ ਚਿਰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਯਹੂਦਿਯਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੱਥਰਾਵ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।”
9 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਕੀ ਦਿਨ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਘੰਟੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ? ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਦੀ ਠੋਕਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਖ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ। 10 ਪਰ ਜੋ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਰਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਠੋਕਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।”
11 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਸਾਡਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਇਸ ਵਕਤ ਸੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਠਾਲਣ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।”
12 ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਸੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।” 13 ਯਿਸੂ ਦੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਬਾਰੇ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।
14 ਤਾਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼-ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ। 15 ਅਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਖਾਤਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਵਕਤ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਥੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਾਂ। ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰੋਂਗੇ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਚਲੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਉੱਥੇ ਚੱਲੀਏ।”
16 ਤਦ ਥੋਮਾ ਨੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਦਦਿਮੁਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੱਦੀਦਾ ਸੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਚੇਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਚਲੋ ਆਓ ਅਸੀਂ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਲੀਏ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਾਈਏ।”
ਯਿਸੂ ਬੈਤਅਨਿਯਾ ਵਿੱਚ
17 ਯਿਸੂ ਬੈਤਅਨਿਯਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ। ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਬਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ। 18 ਬੈਤਅਨਿਯਾ ਅਤੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚਕਾਰ ਦੋ ਮੀਲ ਤੋਂ ਘੱਟ ਦੂਰੀ ਸੀ। 19 ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਮਾਰਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਕੋਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਰਾ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ।
20 ਜਦ ਮਾਰਥਾ ਨੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਿ ਯਿਸੂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਬਾਹਰ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ ਪਰ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਰਹੀ। 21 ਮਾਰਥਾ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਨਾ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ। 22 ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ, ਜੋ ਵੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਮੰਗੋਂਗੇ, ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।”
23 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੇਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੱਲ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਵੇਗਾ।”
24 ਮਾਰਥਾ ਬੋਲੀ, “ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੁਨਰ ਉਥਾਂਨ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਤ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਜੀਅ ਉੱਠੇਗਾ।”
25 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪੁਨਰ ਉਥਾਂਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਮਰ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ ਜਿਉਣਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੇਗਾ। 26 ਹਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ, ਜੋ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰੇਗਾ। ਮਾਰਥਾ, ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਇਸਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ?”
27 ਮਾਰਥਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਮੈਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਸੀਹ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ।”
ਯਿਸੂ ਰੋਇਆ
28 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਮਾਰਥਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਭੈਣ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਕੋਲ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕਲਿਆਂ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਗੁਰੂ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੁੱਛ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।” 29 ਜਦੋਂ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਝੱਟ ਉੱਠ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਕੋਲ ਗਈ। 30 ਯਿਸੂ ਹਾਲੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਸੀ, ਸਗੋਂ ਉਹ ਅਜੇ ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਸੀ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਰਥਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਆਈ ਸੀ। 31 ਜਿਹੜੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਨੂੰ ਜਲਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਉੱਠਦਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਛੱਡਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਪਿੱਛਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਬਰ ਤੇ ਰੋਣ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। 32 ਮਰਿਯਮ ਉੱਥੇ ਆਈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਈ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਨਾ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ।”
33 ਜਦੋਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਏ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੜਾ ਦਰਦ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ। 34 ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।”
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਓ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਖੋ।”
35 ਯਿਸੂ ਰੋਇਆ।
36 ਫਿਰ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਵੇਖੋ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।”
37 ਪਰ ਕੁਝ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਉਹ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਕੀ ਉਹ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਿਆ।” 38 ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਫੇਰ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਯਿਸੂ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਦੀ ਕਬਰ ਉੱਪਰ ਆਇਆ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਗੁਫਾ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਪੱਥਰ ਧਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। 39 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸ ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਟਾ ਦੇਵੋ।”
ਮਾਰਥਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲਾਜ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਰਿਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਉੱਥੋਂ ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਸੜ੍ਹਿਆਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।” ਮਾਰਥਾ ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਭੈਣ ਸੀ।
40 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਮਾਰਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਯਾਦ ਕਰ। ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ? ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰੇਂਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾਂ ਵੇਖੇਂਗੀ।”
41 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਹਟਾਇਆ। ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਹੇ ਪਿਤਾ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ। 42 ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਆਖੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਵਕਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕਤਰ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਹੈ।” 43 ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ, “ਲਾਜ਼ਰ, ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਆ।” 44 ਉਹ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਆਇਆ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ-ਪੈਰ ਮਲਮਲ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦੇ ਟੁਕੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਰੁਮਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਪੇਟਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸਦੇ ਉੱਪਰੋਂ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਹਟਾਵੋ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਦਿਓ।”
ਯਹੂਦੀ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਉਂਤ ਬਣਾਈ(A)
45 ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਉੱਥੇ ਮਰਿਯਮ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਆਏ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਜੋ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਬਹੁਤਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ। 46 ਪਰ ਕੁਝ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀਆਂ ਕੋਲ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਿਸੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। 47 ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਸਭਾ ਬੁਲਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ? ਇਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਰਿਸ਼ਮੇ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। 48 ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਤਦ ਫਿਰ ਰੋਮੀ ਆ ਜਾਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਕੌਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਕਰ ਦੇਣਗੇ।”
49 ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਉਸ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲੋਕ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ। 50 ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਕੌਮ ਦੀ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ।”
51 ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਾਲ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਸੀ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਯਿਸੂ ਕੌਮ ਲਈ ਮਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ। 52 ਹਾਂ, ਯਿਸੂ ਸਿਰਫ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਕੌਮ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰੇਗਾ ਸਗੋਂ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਖਿੰਡੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਮਰੇਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਠਿਆਂ ਲਿਆ ਸੱਕੇ।
53 ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਤੋਂ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਨੋਂ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਉਂਤ ਬਣਾਈ। 54 ਤਾਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇ-ਆਮ ਘੁੰਮਣਾ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਹ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਫ਼ਰਾਈਮ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਗਰ ਵੱਲ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਉਜਾੜ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਸੀ। ਉੱਥੇ ਕੁਝ ਦੇਰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਰਿਹਾ।
55 ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਹ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਈ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਏ। 56 ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਕੀ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ? ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ?” 57 ਪਰ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਯਿਸੂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਣ।

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

8 The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
9 Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” 11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
12 The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. 15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus,[a] said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia[b] away. 19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, 34 and said, “Where have you laid him?”
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesus wept.
36 The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” 37 Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying.[c] Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.
Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
