拉撒路之死
11 有一个叫拉撒路的病人，住在伯大尼，就是玛丽亚和她的姐姐[a]玛妲住的村子。 2 这玛丽亚就是用香液膏抹主，又用自己的头发擦他脚的那一个。是她的弟弟拉撒路患了病。 3 姐妹俩派人到耶稣那里说：“主啊，你看，你所爱的人患了病。”
4 耶稣听了就说：“这病不至于死，而是为了神的荣耀，好使神的儿子由此得荣耀。” 5 耶稣一向爱玛妲和她的妹妹，以及拉撒路。 6 然而当他听说拉撒路患了病，还继续在原来的地方住了两天， 7 此后才对门徒说：“我们再到犹太去吧。”
8 门徒们说：“拉比，近来犹太人想用石头砸死你，你还再到那里去吗？”
9 耶稣回答：“白天不是有十二个小时吗？人如果在白天行走，就不会绊倒，因为他看见这世界的光。 10 但人如果在黑夜里行走，就会绊倒，因为在他里面没有光。” 11 耶稣讲了这些话，然后对他们说：“我们的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去叫醒他。”
12 门徒们就对他说：“主啊，他如果是睡着了，就有救了！”
13 其实耶稣说的是拉撒路的死，他们却以为他说的是睡觉休息。 14 于是耶稣明确地告诉他们：“拉撒路死了！ 15 我为你们欢喜，因为我不在那里，好使你们可以相信。现在我们到他那里去吧。”
16 那叫迪杜马[b]的多马，对其他门徒说：“我们也去吧，让我们与主[c]一起死！”
复活与生命
17 耶稣到了，知道拉撒路在坟墓里已经有四天了。 18 伯大尼离耶路撒冷不远，约有三公里[d]。 19 许多犹太人到玛妲和玛丽亚那里去，为了她们弟弟的事安慰她们。 20 玛妲一听说耶稣来了，就去迎接他。玛丽亚却仍然坐在家里。
21 玛妲对耶稣说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。 22 不过我知道，即使是现在，你无论向神求什么，神都将赐给你的。”
23 耶稣对她说：“你弟弟会复活的。”
24 玛妲说：“我知道在末日复活的时候，他会复活。”
25 耶稣对她说：“我就是复活，我就是生命。信我的人，即使死了，也将要活。 26 所有活着而信我的人绝不会死，直到永远。你信这话吗？”
27 玛妲说：“是的，主啊！我相信你是基督，是神的儿子，就是要到世界上来的那一位。”
耶稣流泪
28 玛妲说了这[e]话，就回去叫她的妹妹玛丽亚，悄悄地说：“老师来到这里，叫你过去。”
29 玛丽亚一听，就立即起来，往耶稣那里去。 30 当时，耶稣还没有进村子，仍在玛妲迎接他的地方。 31 那些在玛丽亚家里安慰她的犹太人，看见她匆忙起身出去，以为[f]她要到坟墓那里去哭，就跟着她。
32 玛丽亚到了耶稣那里，一看见他，就俯伏在他的脚前，说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。”
33 耶稣看见玛丽亚在哭，陪她一起来的犹太人也在哭，就灵里愤怒，内心烦扰。 34 他问：“你们把他安放在哪里？”
他们回答说：“主啊，请来看。”
35 耶稣流泪了。
36 犹太人就说：“你看，他多么爱拉撒路！” 37 但是其中有些人说：“这个人既然开了瞎子的眼睛，难道就不能使拉撒路不死吗？”
使拉撒路复活
38 耶稣自己里面再次感到愤怒，来到坟墓那里。那坟墓是个洞穴，有一块石头放置在洞口。 39 耶稣吩咐：“把石头挪开。”
死者的姐姐玛妲说：“主啊，他已经发臭了，因为是第四天了。”
40 耶稣对她说：“我不是对你说过，你如果信，就会看见神的荣耀吗？”
41 于是他们把[g]石头挪开。耶稣向上举目，说：“父啊，我感谢你，因为你已经垂听了我。 42 我知道你总是在垂听我，但我这么说，是为了这些站在周围的民众，好让他们相信是你差派了我。” 43 耶稣说了这些话，就大声呼唤：“拉撒路，出来！” 44 那死了的人就出来了；手脚缠着布条，脸上包着头巾。耶稣对他们说：“解开他，让他走！”
阴谋杀害耶稣
45 来到玛丽亚那里的许多犹太人，看到耶稣所做的事，就信了耶稣。 46 然而，其中有些人到法利赛人那里去，向他们报告耶稣所行的事。
47 于是祭司长们和法利赛人召集了议会，说：“这个人行了很多神迹，我们该做什么呢？ 48 如果任凭他这样下去，大家都会信他，罗马人就会来，夺取我们的圣地和国家！”
49 其中有一个人叫该亚法，是当年的大祭司，对他们说：“你们什么都不懂！ 50 也不想一想，一个人替民众死，免得全民族灭亡，这对你们[h]是有益处的。” 51 他说这话不是出于自己，只因他是当年的大祭司，就预言了耶稣要替全民族而死； 52 而且不仅是替犹太民族死，也是要把神的那些四散的儿女都召集合一。 53 从那天起，他们就商议要把耶稣杀掉。 54 因此，耶稣不再公开地在犹太人当中行事[i]，而是离开那里，到旷野附近的地方，进了一个叫以法莲的城，在那里与门徒们住下了。
55 犹太人的逾越节快到了。许多人从乡下上耶路撒冷去，要在节日前洁净自己。 56 他们寻找耶稣，站在圣殿里彼此谈论说：“你们怎么看，他绝不会来过节吧？” 57 原来，祭司长们和法利赛人早就下令，如果有人知道耶稣在哪里，就要报告，好抓住他。

Muerte de Lázaro
11 Estaba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.(A) 2 (María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume, y le enjugó los pies con sus cabellos.(B)) 3 Enviaron, pues, las hermanas para decir a Jesús: Señor, he aquí el que amas está enfermo. 4 Oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.
5 Y amaba Jesús a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro. 6 Cuando oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba. 7 Luego, después de esto, dijo a los discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez. 8 Le dijeron los discípulos: Rabí, ahora procuraban los judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá? 9 Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? Jesús, la resurrección y la vida
17 Vino, pues, Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que Lázaro estaba en el sepulcro. 18 Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a quince estadios; 19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por su hermano. 20 Entonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a encontrarle; pero María se quedó en casa. 21 Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. 22 Mas también sé ahora que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará. 23 Jesús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará. 24 Marta le dijo: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el día postrero. 25 Le dijo Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá. 26 Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto? 27 Le dijo: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.
Jesús llora ante la tumba de Lázaro
28 Habiendo dicho esto, fue y llamó a María su hermana, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí y te llama. 29 Ella, cuando lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y vino a él. 30 Jesús todavía no había entrado en la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta le había encontrado. 31 Entonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella y la consolaban, cuando vieron que María se había levantado de prisa y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí. 32 María, cuando llegó a donde estaba Jesús, al verle, se postró a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano. 33 Jesús entonces, al verla llorando, y a los judíos que la acompañaban, también llorando, se estremeció en espíritu y se conmovió, 34 y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Resurrección de Lázaro
38 Jesús, profundamente conmovido otra vez, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta encima. 39 Dijo Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: Señor, hiede ya, porque es de cuatro días. 40 Jesús le dijo: ¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios? 41 Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde había sido puesto el muerto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy por haberme oído. 42 Yo sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado. 43 Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz: ¡Lázaro, ven fuera! 44 Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. El complot para matar a Jesús

45 Entonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido para acompañar a María, y vieron lo que hizo Jesús, creyeron en él. 46 Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho. 47 Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el concilio, y dijeron: ¿Qué haremos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales. 48 Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y destruirán nuestro lugar santo y nuestra nación. 49 Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada; 50 ni pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca. 51 Esto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación; 52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos. 53 Así que, desde aquel día acordaron matarle.
54 Por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que se alejó de allí a la región contigua al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.
55 Y estaba cerca la pascua de los judíos; y muchos subieron de aquella región a Jerusalén antes de la pascua, para purificarse. 56 Y buscaban a Jesús, y estando ellos en el templo, se preguntaban unos a otros: ¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta? 57 Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno supiese dónde estaba, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

La muerte de Lázaro
11 1-2 Lázaro y sus hermanas Marta y María vivían en el pueblo de Betania. María fue la que derramó perfume en los pies de Jesús y luego los secó con sus cabellos.
Un día, Lázaro se enfermó 3 y sus hermanas le mandaron este mensaje a Jesús: «Señor, tu querido amigo Lázaro está enfermo.»
4 Cuando Jesús recibió el mensaje, dijo: «Esta enfermedad no terminará en muerte. Servirá para mostrar el poder de Dios, y el poder que tengo yo, el Hijo de Dios.»
5 Jesús amaba a Marta, a María y a Lázaro. 6 Sin embargo, cuando recibió la noticia de que Lázaro estaba enfermo, decidió quedarse dos días más en donde estaba. 7 Al tercer día les dijo a sus discípulos:
—Regresemos a la región de Judea.
8 Los discípulos le dijeron:
—Maestro, algunos de los judíos de esa región trataron de matarte hace poco. ¿Aun así quieres regresar allá?
9 Jesús les respondió:
—Cada día, el sol brilla durante doce horas. Si uno camina de día, no tropieza con nada, porque la luz del sol le alumbra el camino. 10-11 Pero si camina de noche, tropieza porque le hace falta la luz. Nuestro amigo Lázaro está dormido, y yo voy a despertarlo.
12 Los discípulos le dijeron:
—Señor, si Lázaro está dormido, para qué te preocupas.
13 Lo que Jesús quería darles a entender era que Lázaro había muerto, pero los discípulos entendieron que estaba descansando. 14 Por eso Jesús les explicó:
—Lázaro ha muerto, 15 y me alegro de no haber estado allí, porque ahora ustedes tendrán oportunidad de confiar en mí. Vayamos a donde está él.
16 Entonces Tomás, al que llamaban el Gemelo, les dijo a los otros discípulos: «Vayamos también nosotros, para morir con Jesús.»
Jesús es la vida
17-19 Como el pueblo de Betania estaba a unos tres kilómetros de la ciudad de Jerusalén, muchos de los judíos que vivían cerca de allí fueron a visitar a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por la muerte de su hermano. Cuando Jesús llegó a Betania, se enteró de que habían sepultado a Lázaro cuatro días antes.
20 Al enterarse Marta de que Jesús había llegado, salió a recibirlo, y María se quedó en la casa. 21 Entonces Marta le dijo a Jesús:
—Señor, si tú hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. 22 Pero a pesar de todo lo que ha pasado, Dios hará lo que tú le pidas. De eso estoy segura.
23 Jesús le contestó:
—Tu hermano volverá a vivir.
24 Y Marta le dijo:
—Claro que sí, cuando llegue el fin, todos los muertos volverán a vivir.
25 A esto Jesús respondió:
—Yo soy el que da la vida y el que hace que los muertos vuelvan a vivir. Quien pone su confianza en mí, aunque muera, vivirá. 26 Los que todavía viven y confían en mí, nunca morirán para siempre. ¿Puedes creer esto?
27 Marta le respondió:
—Sí, Señor. Yo creo que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, que debía venir al mundo.
Jesús llora por su amigo
28 Después de decir esto, Marta llamó a María y le dijo en secreto: «El Maestro ha llegado, y te llama.»
29 María se levantó enseguida y fue a verlo. 30 Jesús no había llegado todavía a la casa, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había encontrado.
31 Al ver que María se levantó y salió rápidamente, los judíos que estaban consolándola en su casa la siguieron. Ellos pensaban que María iba a llorar ante la tumba de su hermano.
32 Cuando María llegó a donde estaba Jesús, se arrodilló delante de él y le dijo:
—Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.
33 Cuando Jesús vio que María y los judíos que habían ido con ella lloraban mucho, se sintió muy triste y les tuvo compasión. 34 Les preguntó:
—¿Dónde sepultaron a Lázaro?
Ellos le dijeron:
—Ven Señor; aquí está.
35 Jesús se puso a llorar, 36 y los judíos que estaban allí dijeron: «Se ve que Jesús amaba mucho a su amigo Lázaro.» 37 Pero otros decían: «Jesús hizo que el ciego pudiera ver. También pudo haber hecho algo para que Lázaro no muriera.»
Lázaro vuelve a vivir
38-39 Todavía con lágrimas en los ojos, Jesús se acercó a la cueva donde habían puesto el cuerpo de Lázaro, y ordenó que quitaran la piedra que cubría la entrada. Pero Marta le dijo:
—Señor, hace cuatro días que murió Lázaro. Seguramente ya huele mal.
40 Jesús le contestó:
—¿No te dije que, si confías en mí, verás el poder de Dios?
41 La gente quitó la piedra de la entrada. Luego, Jesús miró al cielo y dijo:
«Padre, te doy gracias porque me has escuchado. 42 Yo sé que siempre me escuchas, pero lo digo por el bien de todos los que están aquí, para que crean que tú me enviaste.»
43 Después de que dijo esto, Jesús gritó: «¡Lázaro, sal de ahí!» 44 Lázaro salió de la cueva, totalmente envuelto en las vendas de lino con que lo habían sepultado. Su cara estaba envuelta con un pañuelo. Por eso Jesús les dijo a los que estaban allí: «Quítenle todas las vendas, y déjenlo libre.»
El plan para matar a Jesús
45 Muchos de los judíos que habían ido al pueblo de Betania para acompañar a María, vieron lo que Jesús hizo y creyeron en él. 46 Pero otros fueron a ver a los fariseos, y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho. 47 Los sacerdotes principales y los fariseos reunieron a la Junta Suprema, y dijeron:
—¿Qué vamos a hacer con este hombre que hace tantos milagros? 48 Si lo dejamos, todos van a creer que él es el Mesías. Entonces vendrán los romanos, y destruirán nuestro templo y a todo el país.[a]
49 Pero Caifás, que ese año era el jefe de los sacerdotes, les dijo:
—Ustedes sí que son tontos. 50 ¿No se dan cuenta? Es mejor que muera un solo hombre por el pueblo, y no que sea destruida toda la nación.
51 Caifás no dijo esto por su propia cuenta, sino que Dios se lo hizo saber porque era el jefe de los sacerdotes. 52 En realidad, Jesús no iba a morir para salvar sólo a los judíos, sino también para reunir a todos los hijos de Dios que hay en el mundo.
53 A partir de ese momento, la Junta Suprema tomó la decisión de matar a Jesús. 54 Sin embargo, Jesús no dejó que ninguno de los judíos de la región de Judea supiera dónde estaba él. Salió de esa región y se fue a un pueblo llamado Efraín, que estaba cerca del desierto. Allí se quedó con sus discípulos.
55 Como ya faltaba poco tiempo para la fiesta de la Pascua, mucha gente iba desde sus pueblos a la ciudad de Jerusalén, a prepararse para la fiesta.[b] 56 Buscaban a Jesús, y cuando llegaron al templo se preguntaban unos a otros: «¿Qué creen ustedes? ¿Vendrá Jesús a celebrar la fiesta?»
57 Los sacerdotes principales y los fariseos habían ordenado que, si alguien veía a Jesús, fuera a avisarles, pues querían arrestarlo.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
