拉撒路死了
11 有一個患病的人，名叫拉撒路，住在伯大尼，就是馬利亞和她姊姊馬大的村莊。 2 這馬利亞就是後來用香膏抹主，並且用頭髮把主的腳擦乾的那人；患病的拉撒路是她的兄弟。 3 姊妹二人派人到耶穌那裡去，說：“主啊，你所愛的人病了。” 4 耶穌聽見，就說：“這病不至於死，而是為了 神的榮耀，使 神的兒子因此得到榮耀。” 5 耶穌向來愛馬大和她的妹妹馬利亞，以及拉撒路。 6 他聽說拉撒路病了，仍然在原來的地方住了兩天， 7 然後對門徒說：“我們再到猶太去吧。” 8 門徒對他說：“拉比，近來猶太人要拿石頭打你，你還到那裡去嗎？” 9 耶穌說：“白晝不是有十二小時嗎？人若在白晝行走，就不會跌倒，因為他看見這世上的光； 10 人若在夜間行走，就會跌倒，因為他沒有光。” 11 耶穌說完了這些話，跟著又對他們說：“我們的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去喚醒他。” 12 門徒說：“主啊，如果他睡了，就會好過來的。” 13 其實耶穌是指著拉撒路的死說的，門徒卻以為他是指正常的睡眠說的。 14 於是，耶穌公開地告訴他們：“拉撒路死了。 15 我為你們歡喜，因為我不在那裡，是要使你們相信。現在我們到他那裡去吧。” 16 那稱為“雙生子”（“雙生子”原文作“低土馬”）的多馬，對其他的門徒說：“我們也去跟他一同死吧！”
耶穌是復活是生命
17 耶穌到了，知道拉撒路在墳墓裡已經四天了。 18 伯大尼靠近耶路撒冷，相距約有三公里。 19 有許多猶太人來到馬大和馬利亞那裡，為了拉撒路的死來安慰她們。 20 馬大聽見耶穌來了，就去迎接他，馬利亞卻仍然坐在家裡。 21 馬大對耶穌說：“主啊，如果你早在這裡，我的兄弟就不會死了！ 22 就是現在，我也知道無論你向 神求甚麼， 神必賜給你。” 23 耶穌對她說：“你的兄弟必會復活。” 24 馬大說：“我知道在末日復活的時候，他必會復活。” 25 耶穌說：“我就是復活和生命；信我的人，雖然死了，也要活著。 26 所有活著又信我的人，必定永遠不死，你信這話嗎？” 27 她說：“主啊，我信；我已經信了，你是基督，是 神的兒子，是那要到世上來的。”
耶穌使拉撒路復活
28 馬大說了這些話，就回去叫她妹妹馬利亞，暗暗地說：“老師來了，他叫你。” 29 馬利亞一聽見，就急忙起來，到耶穌那裡去。 30 那時，耶穌還沒有進入村子，仍然在馬大迎接他的地方。 31 那些在房子裡和馬利亞在一起安慰她的猶太人，見她匆忙地起來出去，就跟著她，以為她要到墳墓那裡去哭。 32 馬利亞來到耶穌那裡，一看見他，就俯伏在他腳前，說：“主啊，如果你早在這裡，我的兄弟就不會死了！” 33 耶穌看見她在哭，和她一同來的猶太人也在哭，就心裡激動，難過起來， 34 說：“你們把他安放在哪裡？”他們說：“主啊，請來看。” 35 耶穌哭了。 36 於是猶太人說：“你看，他多麼愛這個人！” 37 他們中間有人說：“他既然開了瞎子的眼睛，難道不能使這個人不死嗎？”
38 耶穌又再心裡激動，來到墳墓前面。那墳墓是一個洞穴，洞口有塊石頭堵住。 39 耶穌說：“把這塊石頭挪開！”死者的姊姊馬大對他說：“主啊，已經四天了，他必定臭了。” 40 耶穌說：“我不是對你說過‘如果你信，就必定看見 神的榮耀’嗎？” 41 於是他們把石頭挪開。耶穌舉目向天，說：“父啊，我感謝你，因為你垂聽了我， 42 我知道你常常聽我，但我說這話，是為了周圍站著的群眾，叫他們信是你差了我來。” 43 說了這話，就大聲呼喊：“拉撒路，出來！” 44 那死了的人就出來，他的手腳都纏著布，臉上裹著巾。耶穌說：“解開他，讓他走！”
祭司長等想殺害耶穌
45 有許多到馬利亞那裡去的猶太人，看見了耶穌所作的事，就信了他。 46 但他們中間有些人到法利賽人那裡去，把耶穌所作的事都告訴他們。 47 於是祭司長和法利賽人召開公議會，說：“這個人行了許多神蹟，我們怎麼辦呢？ 48 我們若讓他這樣，所有的人都會信他，羅馬人就會來，奪取我們的聖地，除滅我們的民族。” 49 他們當中有一位該亞法，是那年作大祭司的，對他們說：“你們甚麼都不知道， 50 也不去想想，一個人代替人民死，免得整個民族滅亡，這對你們是有益的。” 51 他說這話不是由於自己，而是因為他是那年的大祭司，所以預言耶穌要替猶太民族死； 52 不但替猶太民族死，也要把散居各地的 神的兒女招聚成為一體。 53 從那天起，他們就想殺害耶穌。
54 因此，耶穌不再在猶太人中間公開活動，卻離開那裡，到曠野附近的地方去；到了一座名叫以法蓮的城，就和門徒住在那裡。
55 猶太人的逾越節快到了，有許多人在過節前從各鄉上耶路撒冷去，要在那裡潔淨自己。 56 他們到處尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裡的時候，彼此說：“你們認為怎樣？他不會來過節吧？” 57 祭司長和法利賽人早已下了命令：如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要前來報告，好去逮捕他。

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life
11 Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick. 2 (Mary was the woman who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was sick.)
3 So the sisters sent a messenger to tell Yeshua, “Lord, your close friend is sick.”
4 When Yeshua heard the message, he said, “His sickness won’t result in death. Instead, this sickness will bring glory to God so that the Son of God will receive glory through it.”
5 Yeshua loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6 Yet, when Yeshua heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Then, after the two days, Yeshua said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you to death. Do you really want to go back there?”
9 Yeshua answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day don’t stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10 However, those who walk at night stumble because they have no light in themselves.”
11 After Yeshua said this, he told his disciples, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, and I’m going to Bethany to wake him.”
12 His disciples said to him, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he’ll get well.”
13 Yeshua meant that Lazarus was dead, but the disciples thought Yeshua meant that Lazarus was only sleeping. 14 Then Yeshua told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 but I’m glad that I wasn’t there so that you can grow in faith. Let’s go to Lazarus.”
16 Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to the rest of the disciples, “Let’s go so that we, too, can die with Yeshua.”
17 When Yeshua arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. 18 (Bethany was near Jerusalem, not quite two miles away.) 19 Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 When Martha heard that Yeshua was coming, she went to meet him. Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha told Yeshua, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask him.”
23 Yeshua told Martha, “Your brother will come back to life.”
24 Martha answered Yeshua, “I know that he’ll come back to life on the last day, when everyone will come back to life.”
25 Yeshua said to her, “I am the one who brings people back to life, and I am life itself. Those who believe in me will live even if they die. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?”
27 Martha said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was expected to come into the world.”
28 After Martha had said this, she went back home and whispered to her sister Mary, “The teacher is here, and he is calling for you.”
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Yeshua. 30 (Yeshua had not yet come into the village but was still where Martha had met him.) 31 The Jews who were comforting Mary in the house saw her get up quickly and leave. So they followed her. They thought that she was going to the tomb to cry. 32 When Mary arrived where Yeshua was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Yeshua saw her crying, and the Jews who were crying with her, he was deeply moved and troubled.
34 So Yeshua asked, “Where did you put Lazarus?”
They answered him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Yeshua cried. 36 The Jews said, “See how much Yeshua loved him.” 37 But some of the Jews asked, “Couldn’t this man who gave a blind man sight keep Lazarus from dying?”
38 Deeply moved again, Yeshua went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone covering the entrance. 39 Yeshua said, “Take the stone away.”
Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Yeshua, “Lord, there must already be a stench. He’s been dead for four days.”
40 Yeshua said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you would see God’s glory?” 41 So the stone was moved away from the entrance of the tomb.
Yeshua looked up and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. 42 I’ve known that you always hear me. However, I’ve said this so that the crowd standing around me will believe that you sent me.” 43 After Yeshua had said this, he shouted as loudly as he could, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 The dead man came out. Strips of cloth were wound around his feet and hands, and his face was wrapped with a handkerchief. Yeshua told them, “Free Lazarus, and let him go.”
The Jewish Council Plans to Kill Jesus
45 Many Jews who had visited Mary and had seen what Yeshua had done believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Yeshua had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council. They asked, “What are we doing? This man is performing a lot of miracles. 48 If we let him continue what he’s doing, everyone will believe in him. Then the Romans will take away our position and our nation.”
49 One of them, Caiaphas, who was chief priest that year, told them, “You people don’t know anything. 50 You haven’t even considered this: It is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
51 Caiaphas didn’t say this on his own. As chief priest that year, he prophesied that Yeshua would die for the Jewish nation. 52 He prophesied that Yeshua wouldn’t die merely for this nation, but that Yeshua would die to bring God’s scattered children together and make them one.
53 From that day on, the Jewish council planned to kill Yeshua. 54 So Yeshua no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he left Bethany and went to the countryside near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 The Jewish Passover was near. Many people came from the countryside to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 As they stood in the temple courtyard, they looked for Yeshua and asked each other, “Do you think that he’ll avoid coming to the festival?” 57 (The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where Yeshua was should tell them so that they could arrest him.)
