拉撒路之死
11 有一个叫拉撒路的病人，住在伯大尼，就是玛丽亚和她的姐姐[a]玛妲住的村子。 2 这玛丽亚就是用香液膏抹主，又用自己的头发擦他脚的那一个。是她的弟弟拉撒路患了病。 3 姐妹俩派人到耶稣那里说：“主啊，你看，你所爱的人患了病。”
4 耶稣听了就说：“这病不至于死，而是为了神的荣耀，好使神的儿子由此得荣耀。” 5 耶稣一向爱玛妲和她的妹妹，以及拉撒路。 6 然而当他听说拉撒路患了病，还继续在原来的地方住了两天， 7 此后才对门徒说：“我们再到犹太去吧。”
8 门徒们说：“拉比，近来犹太人想用石头砸死你，你还再到那里去吗？”
9 耶稣回答：“白天不是有十二个小时吗？人如果在白天行走，就不会绊倒，因为他看见这世界的光。 10 但人如果在黑夜里行走，就会绊倒，因为在他里面没有光。” 11 耶稣讲了这些话，然后对他们说：“我们的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去叫醒他。”
12 门徒们就对他说：“主啊，他如果是睡着了，就有救了！”
13 其实耶稣说的是拉撒路的死，他们却以为他说的是睡觉休息。 14 于是耶稣明确地告诉他们：“拉撒路死了！ 15 我为你们欢喜，因为我不在那里，好使你们可以相信。现在我们到他那里去吧。”
16 那叫迪杜马[b]的多马，对其他门徒说：“我们也去吧，让我们与主[c]一起死！”
复活与生命
17 耶稣到了，知道拉撒路在坟墓里已经有四天了。 18 伯大尼离耶路撒冷不远，约有三公里[d]。 19 许多犹太人到玛妲和玛丽亚那里去，为了她们弟弟的事安慰她们。 20 玛妲一听说耶稣来了，就去迎接他。玛丽亚却仍然坐在家里。
21 玛妲对耶稣说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。 22 不过我知道，即使是现在，你无论向神求什么，神都将赐给你的。”
23 耶稣对她说：“你弟弟会复活的。”
24 玛妲说：“我知道在末日复活的时候，他会复活。”
25 耶稣对她说：“我就是复活，我就是生命。信我的人，即使死了，也将要活。 26 所有活着而信我的人绝不会死，直到永远。你信这话吗？”
27 玛妲说：“是的，主啊！我相信你是基督，是神的儿子，就是要到世界上来的那一位。”
耶稣流泪
28 玛妲说了这[e]话，就回去叫她的妹妹玛丽亚，悄悄地说：“老师来到这里，叫你过去。”
29 玛丽亚一听，就立即起来，往耶稣那里去。 30 当时，耶稣还没有进村子，仍在玛妲迎接他的地方。 31 那些在玛丽亚家里安慰她的犹太人，看见她匆忙起身出去，以为[f]她要到坟墓那里去哭，就跟着她。
32 玛丽亚到了耶稣那里，一看见他，就俯伏在他的脚前，说：“主啊，如果你早在这里，我弟弟就不会死了。”
33 耶稣看见玛丽亚在哭，陪她一起来的犹太人也在哭，就灵里愤怒，内心烦扰。 34 他问：“你们把他安放在哪里？”
他们回答说：“主啊，请来看。”
35 耶稣流泪了。
36 犹太人就说：“你看，他多么爱拉撒路！” 37 但是其中有些人说：“这个人既然开了瞎子的眼睛，难道就不能使拉撒路不死吗？”
使拉撒路复活
38 耶稣自己里面再次感到愤怒，来到坟墓那里。那坟墓是个洞穴，有一块石头放置在洞口。 39 耶稣吩咐：“把石头挪开。”
死者的姐姐玛妲说：“主啊，他已经发臭了，因为是第四天了。”
40 耶稣对她说：“我不是对你说过，你如果信，就会看见神的荣耀吗？”
41 于是他们把[g]石头挪开。耶稣向上举目，说：“父啊，我感谢你，因为你已经垂听了我。 42 我知道你总是在垂听我，但我这么说，是为了这些站在周围的民众，好让他们相信是你差派了我。” 43 耶稣说了这些话，就大声呼唤：“拉撒路，出来！” 44 那死了的人就出来了；手脚缠着布条，脸上包着头巾。耶稣对他们说：“解开他，让他走！”
阴谋杀害耶稣
45 来到玛丽亚那里的许多犹太人，看到耶稣所做的事，就信了耶稣。 46 然而，其中有些人到法利赛人那里去，向他们报告耶稣所行的事。
47 于是祭司长们和法利赛人召集了议会，说：“这个人行了很多神迹，我们该做什么呢？ 48 如果任凭他这样下去，大家都会信他，罗马人就会来，夺取我们的圣地和国家！”
49 其中有一个人叫该亚法，是当年的大祭司，对他们说：“你们什么都不懂！ 50 也不想一想，一个人替民众死，免得全民族灭亡，这对你们[h]是有益处的。” 51 他说这话不是出于自己，只因他是当年的大祭司，就预言了耶稣要替全民族而死； 52 而且不仅是替犹太民族死，也是要把神的那些四散的儿女都召集合一。 53 从那天起，他们就商议要把耶稣杀掉。 54 因此，耶稣不再公开地在犹太人当中行事[i]，而是离开那里，到旷野附近的地方，进了一个叫以法莲的城，在那里与门徒们住下了。
55 犹太人的逾越节快到了。许多人从乡下上耶路撒冷去，要在节日前洁净自己。 56 他们寻找耶稣，站在圣殿里彼此谈论说：“你们怎么看，他绝不会来过节吧？” 57 原来，祭司长们和法利赛人早就下令，如果有人知道耶稣在哪里，就要报告，好抓住他。

Jesus Hears That Lazarus Is Sick
11 Now there was a certain one being sick— Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha, her sister. 2 And it was Mary, the one having anointed[a] the Lord with perfume and having wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent out a message to Him, saying, “Lord, look— the one whom You love is sick”. 4 And having heard, Jesus said “This sickness is not leading to death, but for the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified through it”.
Jesus Returns To Judea To Raise Lazarus From The Dead
5 Now Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 So when He heard that he was sick, at that time He remained for two days in which place He was— 7 then after this, says to the disciples, “Let us be going to Judea again”. 8 The disciples say to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just-now seeking to stone You, and You are going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of the day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if one walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him”. 11 He said these things, and after this He says to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen-asleep, but I am going in order that I may awaken him”. 12 So the disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be restored”. 13 Now Jesus had spoken concerning his death, but those ones thought that He was speaking concerning the sleep of slumber[b]. 14 So at-that-time Jesus said to them with plainness, “Lazarus died. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us be going to him”. 16 Then Thomas, the one being called Didymus[c], said to his fellow-disciples, “Let us indeed be going, so that we may die with Him[d]”.
Jesus Says, I Am The Resurrection And The Life. The One Believing In Me Will Live
17 So having come, Jesus found him already having four days in the tomb. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stades[e] away. 19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary in order that they might console them concerning their brother. 20 So Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him. But Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever You ask God, God will give You”. 23 Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise-up”. 24 Martha says to Him, “I know that he will rise-up in the resurrection at the last day”. 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one believing in Me— even though he dies, he will live. 26 And everyone living and believing in Me will never die, ever. Do you believe this?” 27 She says to Him, “Yes, Lord. I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One coming into the world”. 28 And having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, having said, “The Teacher is here and is calling you”. 29 And that one, when she heard, arose quickly and was going to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. 31 So the Jews— the ones being with her in the house and consoling her—having seen that Mary stood up quickly and went out, followed her, having supposed that she was going to the tomb in order that she might weep there. 32 Then Mary— when she came where Jesus was, having seen Him— fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died”. 33 Then Jesus— when He saw her weeping, and the Jews having come with her weeping— was deeply-moved[f] in His spirit, and troubled[g] Himself. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They say to Him, “Lord, come and see”. 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews were saying, “Look— how He was loving him!” 37 And[h] some of them said, “Was not this One— the One having opened the eyes of the blind one— able to cause that this one also should not die?”
Jesus Calls Lazarus Out of The Tomb. Many Believe In Him
38 Then Jesus, again being deeply-moved in Himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon[i] it. 39 Jesus says, “Take away the stone”. Martha, the sister of the one having come-to-an-end[j], says to Him, “Lord, he already stinks, for it is the fourth-day”. 40 Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted His eyes upward, and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42 Now I knew that You always hear Me. But I said this for the sake of the crowd having stood around— in order that they may believe that You sent Me forth”. 43 And having said these things, He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come outside!” 44 The one having died came out, having been bound as to the feet and the hands with grave-cloths. And his face had been bound-around with a face-cloth. Jesus says to them, “Unbind him, and allow him to go”. 45 Therefore many of the Jews— the ones having come to Mary, and having seen the things which He did— believed in Him.
Some Told The Pharisees. Caiaphas Prophesies, Better For One To Die For The People
46 But some[k] of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus did. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together a council[l]. And they were saying, “What are we doing? Because this man is doing many signs! 48 If we tolerate Him in this manner, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place[m] and nation”. 49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being the high priest of that year, said to them, “You do not know anything— 50 nor do you consider that it is better for you that one Man die for the people, and the whole nation not perish”. 51 Now he did not say this from himself, but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation. 52 And not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God having been scattered [in the world]. 53 Therefore from that day, they planned to kill Him.
Jesus Withdraws From The Public
54 Therefore Jesus was no longer walking in public among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, to a city being called Ephraim. And He stayed there with the disciples.
At The Passover, Everyone Was Looking For Jesus
55 Now the Passover [Feast] of the Jews was near. And many went up to Jerusalem from the country[n] before the Passover [Feast], in order that they might purify themselves. 56 So they were seeking Jesus, and saying, standing with one another in the temple, “What seems right to you— that He will by no means come to the Feast?” 57 And the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commands that if anyone came-to-know where He was, he should disclose it— so that they might seize Him.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

The Death of Lazarus

16 Then (I)Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
I Am the Resurrection and the Life
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [a]two miles away. 19 And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that (J)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha said to Him, (K)“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am (L)the resurrection and the life. (M)He who believes in Me, though he may (N)die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, (O)I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy
28 And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but [b]was in the place where Martha met Him. 31 (P)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, [c]saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she (Q)fell down at His feet, saying to Him, (R)“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”
They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 (S)Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
37 And some of them said, “Could not this Man, (T)who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”
Lazarus Raised from the Dead
38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a (U)stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would (V)see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone [d]from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but (W)because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with (X)graveclothes, and (Y)his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

49 And one of them, (AE)Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 (AF)nor do you consider that it is expedient for [e]us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (AG)not for that nation only, but (AH)also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
53 Then, from that day on, they plotted to (AI)put Him to death. 54 (AJ)Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called (AK)Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.
55 (AL)And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to (AM)purify themselves. 56 (AN)Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?” 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might (AO)seize Him.
