1 太初有道，道與 神同在，道就是 神。 2 這道太初與 神同在。 3 萬有是藉著他造的；凡被造的，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的。 4 在他裡面有生命，（有些抄本第3、4節或譯：“萬有是藉著他造的，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的；凡被造的，都在他裡面有生命……”）這生命就是人的光。 5 光照在黑暗中，黑暗不能勝過光。
6 有一個人，名叫約翰，是 神所差來的。 7 他來是要作見證，就是為光作見證，使眾人藉著他可以相信。 8 他不是那光，而是要為那光作見證。 9 那光來到世界，是普照世人的真光。 10 他在世界，世界也是藉著他造的，世界卻不認識他。 11 他到自己的地方來，自己的人卻不接受他。 12 凡接受他的，就是信他名的人，他就賜給他們權利，成為 神的兒女。 13 他們不是從血統生的，不是從肉身的意思生的，也不是從人意生的，而是從 神生的。
14 道成了肉身，住在我們中間，滿有恩典和真理。我們見過他的榮光，正是從父而來的獨生子的榮光。
15 約翰為他作見證，大聲說：“這一位就是我所說的：‘那在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’” 16 從他的豐盛裡我們都領受了，而且恩上加恩。 17 律法是藉著摩西頒布的，恩典和真理卻是藉著耶穌基督而來的。 18 從來沒有人見過 神，只有在父懷裡的獨生子把他彰顯出來。
施洗約翰的見證(A)
19 以下是約翰的見證：猶太人從耶路撒冷派祭司和利未人到約翰那裡，問他：“你是誰？” 20 約翰並不否認，坦白地承認說：“我不是基督。” 21 他們又問：“那麼你是誰？是以利亞嗎？”他說：“我不是。”“是那位先知嗎？”他回答：“不是。” 22 於是他們再問：“你是誰？好讓我們回覆派我們來的人。你說你自己是誰？” 23 他說：“我就是在曠野呼喊者的聲音：‘修直主的路！’正如以賽亞先知所說的。” 24 這些人是法利賽人派來的。 25 他們問約翰：“你既然不是基督，不是以利亞，也不是那位先知，那麼你為甚麼施洗呢？” 26 約翰回答：“我是用水施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的； 27 他是在我以後來的，我就是給他解鞋帶也不配。” 28 這些事發生在約旦河東的伯大尼，約翰施洗的地方。
神的羊羔
29 第二天，約翰見耶穌迎面而來，就說：“看哪， 神的羊羔，是除去世人的罪孽的！ 30 這一位就是我所說的：‘有一個人，是在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’ 31 我本來不認識他，但為了要把他顯明給以色列人，因此我來用水施洗。” 32 約翰又作見證說：“我曾看見聖靈，好像鴿子從天上降下來，停留在他的身上。 33 我本來不認識他，但那差我來用水施洗的對我說：‘你看見聖靈降下來，停留在誰身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的。’ 34 我看見了，就作見證說：‘這就是 神的兒子。’”
呼召第一批門徒(B)
35 過了一天，約翰和他的兩個門徒又站在那裡。 36 約翰看見耶穌走過的時候，就說：“看哪， 神的羊羔！” 37 那兩個門徒聽見他的話，就跟從了耶穌。 38 耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟著，就問：“你們要甚麼？”他們說：“拉比，你在哪裡住？”（“拉比”的意思就是“老師”。） 39 他說：“你們來看吧！”於是他們就去看他所住的地方。那一天他們就和耶穌住在一起；那時大約是下午四點鐘。 40 聽了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的那兩個人，一個是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈。 41 他先找到自己的哥哥西門，告訴他：“我們遇見彌賽亞了！”（“彌賽亞”的意思就是“基督”。） 42 安得烈就帶他到耶穌那裡。耶穌定睛看著他，說：“你是約翰的兒子西門，你要稱為磯法。”（“磯法”翻譯出來就是“彼得”。）
呼召腓力和拿但業
43 再過一天，耶穌決定往加利利去；他遇見腓力，就對他說：“來跟從我！” 44 腓力是伯賽大人，與安得烈和彼得同鄉。 45 腓力找到拿但業，告訴他：“摩西在律法書上所寫的，和眾先知所記的那位，我們已經遇見了，他就是約瑟的兒子拿撒勒人耶穌。” 46 拿但業說：“拿撒勒還能出甚麼好的嗎？”腓力說：“你來看！” 47 耶穌看見拿但業向他走過來，就論到他說：“看哪，這的確是個以色列人，他心裡沒有詭詐。” 48 拿但業問他：“你怎麼認識我呢？”耶穌回答：“腓力還沒有招呼你，你在無花果樹下的時候，我就看見你了。” 49 拿但業說：“拉比，你是 神的兒子，你是以色列的王！” 50 耶穌說：“因為我告訴你‘我看見你在無花果樹下’，你就信了嗎？你還要看見比這些更大的事。” 51 又對他說：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們要看見天開了， 神的眾使者在人子的身上，上去下來。”
迦拿的婚筵
2 第三天，在加利利的迦拿有婚筵，耶穌的母親在那裡； 2 耶穌和門徒也被邀請參加婚筵。 3 酒用盡了，耶穌的母親對他說：“他們沒有酒了。” 4 耶穌說：“母親（“母親”原文作“婦人”），我跟你有甚麼關係呢？我的時候還沒有到。” 5 他母親告訴僕人說：“他吩咐你們甚麼，就作甚麼。” 6 在那裡有六口石缸，每口可盛兩三桶水，是為猶太人行潔淨禮用的。 7 耶穌吩咐僕人：“把缸都倒滿水！”他們就倒滿了，直到缸口。 8 耶穌又吩咐他們：“現在舀出來，送給筵席的總管！”他們就送去了。 9 總管嘗了那水變的酒，不知道是從哪裡來的，只有舀水的僕人知道。總管就叫新郎來， 10 對他說：“人人都是先擺上好酒，等到親友喝夠了，才擺上次等的，你倒把好酒留到現在。” 11 這是耶穌所行的第一件神蹟，是在加利利的迦拿行的。他顯出了自己的榮耀，他的門徒就信了他。
12 這事以後，耶穌和母親、弟弟、門徒，都下到迦百農去，在那裡住了沒有幾天。
潔淨聖殿(C)
13 猶太人的逾越節近了，耶穌就上耶路撒冷去。 14 他在聖殿的外院裡看見有賣牛羊鴿子的，和坐在那裡兌換銀錢的， 15 就用繩索做了一條鞭子，把眾人連牛帶羊都從外院趕出去，倒掉兌換銀錢的人的錢，推翻他們的桌子； 16 又對賣鴿子的說：“把這些東西搬出去，不要把我父的殿當作巿場。” 17 他的門徒就想起經上記著：“我為你的殿心中迫切，如同火燒。” 18 猶太人就問他：“你可以顯甚麼神蹟給我們看，證明你有權作這些事呢？” 19 耶穌回答：“你們拆毀這殿，我三天之內要把它建造起來。” 20 猶太人說：“這殿建了四十六年，你三天之內就能把它建造起來嗎？” 21 但耶穌所說的殿，就是他的身體。 22 所以當耶穌從死人中復活以後，門徒想起了他說過這話，就信了聖經和耶穌所說的話。
耶穌知道人的內心
23 耶穌在耶路撒冷過逾越節的時候，許多人看見他所行的神蹟，就信了他的名。 24 耶穌卻不信任他們，因為他知道所有的人， 25 也不需要誰指證人是怎樣的，因為他知道人心裡存的是甚麼。
人必須重生
3 有一個法利賽人，名叫尼哥德慕，是猶太人的官長。 2 他夜間來到耶穌那裡，對他說：“拉比，我們知道你是從 神那裡來的教師，因為如果沒有 神同在，你所行的這些神蹟，就沒有人能行。” 3 耶穌回答：“我實實在在告訴你，人若不重生，就不能見 神的國。” 4 尼哥德慕說：“人老了，怎能重生呢？難道他能再進母腹生出來嗎？” 5 耶穌回答：“我實實在在告訴你，人若不是從水和聖靈生的，就不能進 神的國。 6 從肉身生的就是肉身，從靈生的就是靈。 7 你不要因為我對你說‘你們必須重生’而感到希奇。 8 風隨意而吹，你聽見它的響聲，卻不知道它從哪裡來，往哪裡去；凡從聖靈生的，也是這樣。” 9 尼哥德慕說：“怎能有這事呢？” 10 耶穌說：“你是以色列人的教師，還不明白這事嗎？ 11 我實實在在告訴你，我們知道的，才講論；見過的，就作證，然而你們卻不接受我們的見證。 12 我對你們講地上的事，你們尚且不信，如果講天上的事，怎能相信呢？ 13 除了那從天上降下來的人子（有些抄本作“除了那從天上降下來仍舊在天上的人子”），沒有人升過天。 14 摩西在曠野怎樣把銅蛇舉起，人子也必照樣被舉起來， 15 使所有信他的人都得永生。
16 “ 神愛世人，甚至把他的獨生子賜給他們，叫一切信他的，不至滅亡，反得永生。 17 因為 神差他的兒子到世上來，不是要定世人的罪，而是要使世人藉著他得救。 18 信他的，不被定罪；不信的，罪已經定了，因為他不信 神獨生子的名。 19 光來到世上，世人因為自己的行為邪惡，不愛光倒愛黑暗，定他們罪的原因，就在這裡。 20 凡作惡的都恨光，不來接近光，免得他的惡行暴露出來。 21 凡行真理的，就來接近光，好顯明他所作的都是靠著 神而作的。”
他必興旺，我必衰微
22 這事以後，耶穌和門徒來到猶太地，他和他們住在那裡，並且施洗。 23 約翰也在靠近撒冷的艾嫩施洗，因為那裡水多；眾人都去受洗。 24 那時約翰還沒有入獄。 25 約翰的門徒和一個猶太人為潔淨禮發生辯論。 26 他們來到約翰那裡，對他說：“拉比，你看，從前和你在約旦河東，你為他作見證的那一位，他也在施洗，眾人都到他那裡去了。” 27 約翰回答：“除了從天上賜下來給他的，人就不能得到甚麼。 28 你們自己可以為我作證：我曾說，我不是基督，不過是奉差遣作他的先鋒的。 29 娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的好友站在那裡聽著，聽見新郎的聲音就非常喜樂。因此，我這喜樂滿溢了！ 30 他必興旺，我必衰微。
從天上來的
31 “那從天上來的，是在萬有之上；從地上來的，是屬於地，所講的也是屬於地。那從天上來的，是超越萬有之上。 32 他把所見所聞的見證出來，可是沒有人接受他的見證。 33 那接受他的見證的，就確認 神是真的。 34 神所差來的那一位講 神的話，因為 神把聖靈無限地賜給他。 35 父愛子，已經把萬有交在他手裡。 36 信子的，有永生；不信從子的，必不得見永生， 神的震怒卻常在他身上。”

生命之道
1 太初，道已經存在，道與上帝同在，道就是上帝。 2 太初，道就與上帝同在。 3 萬物都是藉著祂造的[a]，受造之物沒有一樣不是藉著祂造的。 4 祂裡面有生命，這生命是人類的光。 5 光照進黑暗裡，黑暗不能勝過[b]光。
6 有一個人名叫約翰，是上帝差來的。 7 他來是要為光做見證，叫世人可以藉著他而相信。 8 約翰不是那光，他來是為那光做見證。 9 那照亮世人的真光來到了世上。 10 祂來到自己所創造的世界，世界卻不認識祂。 11 祂來到自己的地方，自己的人卻不接納祂。 12 但所有接納祂的，就是那些信祂的人，祂就賜給他們權利成為上帝的兒女。 13 這些人既不是從人的血緣關係生的，也不是從人的情慾或意願生的，而是從上帝生的。

他們說：「老師[e]，你住在哪裡？」

50 耶穌說：「我說看見你在無花果樹下，你就信我嗎？將來你還要看見比這更大的事。 51 我實實在在地告訴你們，你們會看見天門敞開，上帝的天使以人子[g]為梯上上下下。」
變水為酒
2 第三天，在加利利的迦拿有人舉辦婚宴，耶穌的母親在那裡。 2 耶穌和門徒也被邀請去赴宴。 3 酒喝完了，耶穌的母親就對祂說：「他們沒有酒了。」 4 耶穌說：「婦人，這跟你我有什麼相干[h]？我的時候還沒有到。」 5 祂母親對僕人說：「祂叫你們做什麼，你們就做什麼。」 6 那裡有六口猶太人用來行潔淨禮儀的石缸，每口可以盛約一百升水。

18 當時，猶太人質問祂：「你給我們顯什麼神蹟來證明你有權這樣做？」
19 耶穌回答說：「你們拆毀這座殿，我三天之內會把它重建起來。」
20 他們說：「這座殿用了四十六年才建成，你三天之內就要把它重建起來嗎？」 21 其實耶穌說的殿是指自己的身體， 22 所以等到祂從死裡復活以後，祂的門徒想起這句話，就相信了聖經和耶穌所傳的道。
23 耶穌在耶路撒冷過逾越節期間，許多人看見祂行的神蹟，就信了祂。 24 耶穌卻不信任他們，因為祂洞悉萬人。 25 不用別人告訴祂，祂也深知人的內心。
論重生
3 有一個法利賽人名叫尼哥德慕，是猶太人的官。 2 一天晚上，他來見耶穌，說：「老師，我們知道你是上帝差來教導人的，因為如果沒有上帝的同在，沒有人能行你所行的神蹟。」
3 耶穌說：「我實實在在地告訴你，人若不重生[i]，就不能看見上帝的國。」
4 尼哥德慕說：「人老了，怎能重生呢？難道要再進母腹生一次嗎？」

迦拿的婚筵
2 第三天，在加利利的迦拿有婚筵，耶稣的母亲在那里； 2 耶稣和门徒也被邀请参加婚筵。 3 酒用尽了，耶稣的母亲对他说：“他们没有酒了。” 4 耶稣说：“母亲（“母亲”原文作“妇人”），我跟你有甚么关系呢？我的时候还没有到。” 5 他母亲告诉仆人说：“他吩咐你们甚么，就作甚么。” 6 在那里有六口石缸，每口可盛两三桶水，是为犹太人行洁净礼用的。 7 耶稣吩咐仆人：“把缸都倒满水！”他们就倒满了，直到缸口。 8 耶稣又吩咐他们：“现在舀出来，送给筵席的总管！”他们就送去了。 9 总管尝了那水变的酒，不知道是从哪里来的，只有舀水的仆人知道。总管就叫新郎来， 10 对他说：“人人都是先摆上好酒，等到亲友喝够了，才摆上次等的，你倒把好酒留到现在。” 11 这是耶稣所行的第一件神迹，是在加利利的迦拿行的。他显出了自己的荣耀，他的门徒就信了他。

耶稣知道人的内心
23 耶稣在耶路撒冷过逾越节的时候，许多人看见他所行的神迹，就信了他的名。 24 耶稣却不信任他们，因为他知道所有的人， 25 也不需要谁指证人是怎样的，因为他知道人心里存的是甚么。
人必须重生

他必兴旺，我必衰微

Prologue
1 In the beginning(A) was the Word,(B) and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.(C) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(D) 3 All things were created(E) through him,(F) and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life,[a](G) and that life was the light(H) of men. 5 That light shines(I) in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome[b] it.(J)
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(K) 7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.[c] 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify(L) about the light. 9 The true light(M) that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.[d](N)
10 He was in the world, and the world was created(O) through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive(P) him,(Q) he gave them the right(R) to be[e] children(S) of God,(T) to those who believe(U) in his name,(V) 13 who were born,(W) not of natural descent,[f] or of the will(X) of the flesh,(Y) or of the will of man,[g] but of God.(Z)
14 The Word(AA) became flesh(AB) and dwelt[h] among us. We observed his glory,(AC) the glory as the one and only(AD) Son[i] from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me(AE) ranks ahead of me,(AF) because he existed before me.’”)(AG) 16 Indeed, we have all received grace(AH) upon[j] grace from his fullness, 17 for the law was given through Moses;(AI) grace and truth(AJ) came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only(AK) Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s(AL) side[k]—he has revealed him.(AM)
John the Baptist’s Testimony
19 This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem(AN) sent priests(AO) and Levites(AP) to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He didn’t deny it but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”(AQ)
21 “What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?” (AR)
“I am not,” he said.
“Are you the Prophet?” (AS)
“No,” he answered.
22 “Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord[l](AT)—just as Isaiah(AU) the prophet said.”
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.(AV) 25 So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”
26 “I baptize with[m] water,”(AW) John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him. 27 He is the one coming after me,[n](AX) whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.” 28 All this happened in Bethany[o] across the Jordan,(AY) where John was baptizing.
The Lamb of God
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AZ) who takes away the sin(BA) of the world! 30 This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I didn’t know him,(BB) but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed(BC) to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit(BD) descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.(BE) 33 I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’(BF) 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”[p](BG)
35 The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi”(BH) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[q]
40 Andrew,(BI) Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”[r](BJ) (which is translated “the Christ”),(BK) 42 and he brought Simon to Jesus.
When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John.[s] You will be called Cephas”(BL) (which is translated “Peter”[t]).
Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day Jesus[u] decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip(BM) and told him, “Follow me.”
44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida,(BN) the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael(BO) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets(BP)): Jesus the son of Joseph,(BQ) from Nazareth.”(BR)
46 “Can anything good(BS) come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.
“Come and see,” Philip answered.
47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BT) in whom there is no deceit.”
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.
49 “Rabbi,”(BU) Nathanael replied, “You are the Son(BV) of God; you are the King of Israel!” (BW)
50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God(BX) ascending and descending(BY) on the Son of Man.”(BZ)
The First Sign: Turning Water into Wine
2 On the third day a wedding took place in Cana(CA) of Galilee.(CB) Jesus’s mother(CC) was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding as well. 3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told him, “They don’t have any wine.”
4 “What has this concern of yours to do with me,[v](CD) woman?”(CE) Jesus asked. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 “Do whatever he tells you,” his mother told the servants.
6 Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification.(CF) Each contained twenty or thirty gallons.[w]
7 “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter.”[x] And they did.
9 When the headwaiter tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom 10 and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people are drunk, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”
11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana(CG) of Galilee.(CH) He revealed(CI) his glory,(CJ) and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this, he went down to Capernaum,(CK) together with his mother, his brothers,(CL) and his disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.
Cleansing the Temple
13 The Jewish Passover(CM) was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(CN) 14 In the temple(CO) he found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and he also found the money changers sitting there. 15 After making a whip out of cords,(CP) he drove everyone out of the temple with their sheep(CQ) and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. 16 He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s(CR) house(CS) into a marketplace!”[y](CT)
17 And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal(CU) for your house will consume(CV) me.[z](CW)
18 So the Jews replied to him, “What sign will you show us for doing these things?”
19 Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple,[aa](CX) and I will raise it up in three days.”(CY)
20 Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build,[ab] and will you raise it up in three days?” (CZ)
21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body.(DA) 22 So when he was raised from the dead,(DB) his disciples remembered that he had said this,(DC) and they believed the Scripture(DD) and the statement Jesus had made.
23 While he was in Jerusalem(DE) during the Passover Festival,(DF) many believed in his name(DG) when they saw the signs he was doing. 24 Jesus, however, would not entrust himself to them, since he knew them all 25 and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.(DH)
Jesus and Nicodemus
3 There was a man from the Pharisees(DI) named Nicodemus,(DJ) a ruler(DK) of the Jews. 2 This man came to him at night and said, “Rabbi,(DL) we know that you are a teacher(DM) who has come from God,(DN) for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.”(DO)
3 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again,[ac](DP) he cannot see the kingdom of God.”(DQ)
4 “How can anyone be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked him. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born(DR) of water and the Spirit,(DS) he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 Whatever is born of the flesh(DT) is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit(DU) is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born(DV) again. 8 The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going.(DW) So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”(DX)
9 “How can these things be?” asked Nicodemus.
10 “Are you a teacher[ad] of Israel and don’t know these things?” Jesus replied. 11 “Truly I tell you,(DY) we speak what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you do not accept our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended(DZ) into heaven(EA) except the one who descended from heaven(EB) —the Son of Man.[ae](EC)
14 “Just as Moses(ED) lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(EE) so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may[af] have eternal life.(EF) 16 For God loved(EG) the world in this way:[ag] He gave[ah] his one and only(EH) Son,(EI) so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.(EJ) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn(EK) the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned,(EL) because he has not believed in the name(EM) of the one and only Son(EN) of God. 19 This is the judgment: The light(EO) has come into the world,(EP) and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates(EQ) the light and avoids it,[ai] so that his deeds(ER) may not be exposed. 21 But anyone who lives by[aj] the truth comes to the light, so that his works(ES) may be shown to be accomplished by God.”
Jesus and John the Baptist
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went to the Judean countryside, where he spent time with them and baptized.
23 John(ET) also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there. People were coming and being baptized, 24 since John had not yet been thrown into prison.(EU)
25 Then a dispute arose between John’s disciples(EV) and a Jew[ak] about purification.(EW) 26 So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi,(EX) the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan,(EY) is baptizing—and everyone is going to him.”(EZ)
27 John responded, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah,(FA) but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’(FB) 29 He who has the bride(FC) is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly[al] at the groom’s voice. So this joy(FD) of mine is complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
The One from Heaven
31 The one who comes from above(FE) is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms.[am] The one who comes from heaven is above all.(FF) 32 He testifies(FG) to what he has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts his testimony. 33 The one who has accepted his testimony has affirmed that God is true.(FH) 34 For the one whom God sent speaks God’s words, since he[an] gives the Spirit(FI) without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son(FJ) and has given all things into his hands.(FK) 36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son[ao] will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.(FL)
