1 我这作长老的，写信给蒙拣选的夫人和她的儿女。你们是我在真理中所爱的；不单是我，凡认识真理的， 2 也因为真理的缘故爱你们。这真理在我们里面，也必与我们同在，直到永远。 3 愿恩惠、怜悯、平安，从父 神和他儿子耶稣基督在真理和爱中与我们同在。
要按真理凭爱心行事
4 我看见你的儿女中，有人照着我们从父领受的命令在真理中行事，我就非常欣慰。 5 夫人哪，我现在请求你，我们要彼此相爱。我写给你的，不是一条新命令，而是我们从起初就有的。 6 我们要照着他的命令行事，这就是爱。你们从起初所听见的那命令，就是要你们凭着爱心行事。 7 有许多欺骗人的已经在世上出现，他们否认耶稣基督是成了肉身来的；这就是那骗人的和敌基督的。 8 你们要小心，不要拆毁我们已经完成的工作，却要得着美满的赏赐。 9 凡越过基督的教训又不持守的，就没有 神；持守这教训的，就有父和子了。 10 如果有人到你们那里，不传这教训，你们就不要接待他到家里，也不要问候他； 11 因为问候他的，就在他的恶事上有分了。

1 The elder,(A)
To the lady chosen by God(B) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(C)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(D)— 2 because of the truth,(E) which lives in us(F) and will be with us forever:
3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(G) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(H) just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(I) I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love:(J) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(K) As you have heard from the beginning,(L) his command is that you walk in love.
7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(M) as coming in the flesh,(N) have gone out into the world.(O) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(P) 8 Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(Q) 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(R) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(S) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(T) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(U) in their wicked work.
12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(V) so that our joy may be complete.(W)
13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God,(X) send their greetings.

Walk According to His Commandments
1 (A)The elder to the (B)chosen (C)lady and her children, whom I (D)love in truth; and not only I, but also all who (E)know the truth, 2 (F)because of the truth which remains (G)in us and will be (H)with us forever: 3 (I)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4 (J)I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received a commandment to do from the Father. 5 Now I ask you, lady, (K)not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had (L)from the beginning, that we (M)love one another. 6 And (N)this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, (O)just as you have heard (P)from the beginning, that you are to walk in it.
7 For (Q)many deceivers have (R)gone out into the world, those who (S)do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is (T)the deceiver and the (U)antichrist. 8 (V)Watch yourselves, (W)that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. 9 [a]Anyone who [b]goes too far and (X)does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (Y)do not receive him into your house, and do not [c]give him a greeting; 11 for the one who [d]gives him a greeting [e](Z)participates in his evil deeds.
12 (AA)Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak [f]face to face, so that [g]your (AB)joy may be made complete.

Inleiding
1 Deze brief is van Johannes, de leider van de gemeente. Ik schrijf deze brief aan de vrouw[a] die door God is uitgekozen, en aan haar kinderen. Ik houd heel veel van jullie. En ik ben niet de enige. Alle mensen die de waarheid[b] van God hebben leren kennen, houden van jullie. 2 Want de waarheid woont in ons en zal voor eeuwig met ons zijn. 3 Ik bid dat God in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. En dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de vrede, de waarheid en de liefde van God en van zijn Zoon de Heer Jezus Christus.[c]
Pas op voor bedriegers
4 Ik ben er heel erg blij over dat ik mensen bij jullie ben tegengekomen die vanuit Gods waarheid leven. Ze leven zoals de Vader ons ook heeft bevolen. 5 En nu wil ik jullie vragen om van elkaar te houden. Ik geef jullie daarmee geen nieuwe opdracht. Want jullie weten het al vanaf het begin. Maar ik wil het herhalen. 6 En dit is echte liefde: dat we doen wat Hij van ons vraagt. Dit is de opdracht die jullie vanaf het begin hebben gekregen.[d]
7 Maar er lopen heel wat mensen rond die proberen om jullie leugens over Jezus Christus te laten geloven. Ze geloven niet dat Jezus Christus werkelijk een mens van vlees en bloed is geworden.[e] Zulke mensen zijn bedriegers en vijanden van Christus. 8 Pas op dat we niet verliezen waar we samen zo hard voor hebben gewerkt, maar zorg ervoor dat we onze hele beloning zullen krijgen. 9 Er zijn mensen die iets veranderen aan wat Christus ons heeft geleerd. Zij houden zich dus niet aan wat Hij ons geleerd heeft. Zulke mensen horen niet bij God. Maar mensen die zich daar wél aan houden, horen bij de Vader en de Zoon. 10 Als er mensen bij jullie komen die jullie andere dingen leren, moeten jullie hen niet binnenlaten. Ga niet met hen om. 11 Want als jullie met hen omgaan, doen jullie eigenlijk met hen mee. Dan zijn jullie net zo schuldig als zij.
Slot
12 Ik heb jullie veel te zeggen, maar dat wil ik liever niet doen met pen en papier. Ik hoop naar jullie toe te komen en zelf met jullie te spreken. Dat zal ons allebei erg blij maken.
13 Jullie moeten de groeten hebben van de kinderen van jullie zuster die ook door God is uitgekozen.

- 2 Johannes 1:1 Met deze 'vrouw' bedoelt Johannes de gemeente. De gemeente is immers de vrouw, de bruid, van Christus. Met de 'kinderen' bedoelt hij de gelovigen in die gemeente.
- 2 Johannes 1:1 Met de 'waarheid' bedoelt Johannes het goede nieuws.
- 2 Johannes 1:3 'Christus' is niet Jezus' achternaam! Het woord 'Christus' is Grieks en betekent 'Gezalfde'. (Het Nieuwe Testament is in het Grieks geschreven). 'De gezalfde' is in de Joodse Boeken de man die speciaal door God met zijn Geest is gevuld ('gezalfd') om Israël te redden. In het Hebreeuws, de taal waarin het Oude Testament is geschreven, werd hij de 'Messias' genoemd, wat hetzelfde betekent.
- 2 Johannes 1:6 Lees Johannes 14:15.
- 2 Johannes 1:7 Er was in die tijd een stroming in het geloof die niet geloofde dat Jezus werkelijk een mens van vlees en bloed geworden is. Zij vonden dat het alleen maar léék alsof Hij een lichaam had. Maar de kern van het goede nieuws is nu juist dat God werkelijk mens werd in Jezus.
