Introdução
1 Do presbítero[a], ao querido amigo Gaio, a quem eu amo na verdade.
2 Meu querido amigo, faço votos de que tudo esteja indo bem com você e que você esteja bem de saúde, assim como está bem espiritualmente. 3 Eu fiquei muito feliz quando alguns irmãos chegaram e me contaram como você é fiel à verdade[b] e como continua seguindo a verdade. 4 Não tenho maior alegria do que esta: ouvir que meus filhos seguem a verdade.
5 Querido amigo, você está sendo fiel ao fazer o que pode pelos irmãos, mesmo quando não os conhece. 6 Estes irmãos testemunharam a respeito do seu amor diante da igreja. Por favor, ajude-os a continuar a viagem deles de um modo que agrade a Deus. 7 Pois eles saíram de viagem para servir a Cristo e não aceitaram nada dos pagãos. 8 Portanto, nós devemos ajudar irmãos como estes, para que possamos trabalhar juntos pela verdade.
9 Escrevi uma carta à igreja, mas Diótrefes, que quer ser o líder entre os irmãos, não quer aceitar o que nós falamos. 10 Por isso, se eu for aí, vou chamar a atenção dele a respeito de tudo o que ele está fazendo. Ele tem-me acusado falsamente, usando palavras maliciosas. Mas, não contente com isto, ele não somente se recusa a mostrar hospitalidade aos irmãos como também impede os que querem ser hospitaleiros, expulsando-os da igreja.
11 Querido amigo, não imite o que é mau. Imite só o que é bom. Aquele que faz o bem pertence a Deus. Aquele que faz o mal jamais viu a Deus.
12 Quanto a Demétrio, todos falam bem dele, e a própria verdade dá bom testemunho dele. E nós também falamos bem dele e vocês sabem que o que nós falamos é verdadeiro.

13 Eu ainda tenho muitas outras coisas para falar; contudo não desejo fazê-lo por carta. 14 Espero poder ir visitá-lo em breve e então poderemos conversar pessoalmente. 15 Que a paz esteja com você! Todos os seus amigos lhe mandam lembranças. Dê lembranças também, pessoalmente, a cada um dos nossos amigos.

2 Meu querido amigo, tenho pedido a Deus que você vá bem em tudo e que esteja com boa saúde, assim como está bem espiritualmente. 3 Fiquei muito contente quando alguns irmãos chegaram e me contaram como você é fiel à verdade e como sempre vive na verdade. 4 Nada me alegra mais do que ouvir que os meus filhos vivem de acordo com a verdade.
5 Meu querido amigo, você tem sido fiel naquilo que faz pelos irmãos, mesmo quando são estrangeiros. 6 Eles têm falado à igreja daqui a respeito do amor de você. Por favor, ajude essa gente a continuar a sua viagem de um modo que agrade a Deus. 7 Pois eles começaram a sua viagem a serviço de Cristo sem aceitar nenhum auxílio dos pagãos. 8 Portanto, nós, os cristãos, precisamos ajudar essas pessoas, pois assim poderemos tomar parte no seu trabalho de anunciar a verdade.
Condenação de Diótrefes e elogio a Demétrio
9 Eu escrevi uma pequena carta à igreja, mas Diótrefes, que deseja ser o líder, não quer dar atenção ao que eu disse. 10 Portanto, quando eu chegar aí, vou chamar a atenção dele a respeito de tudo o que ele tem feito: as coisas horríveis que diz de nós e as mentiras que conta. Porém ele não fica satisfeito só em fazer isso; pois, quando os irmãos chegam aí, ele não os recebe. E, se alguma pessoa quer recebê-los, ele não deixa e até a expulsa da igreja!
11 Gaio, meu querido amigo, imite o que é bom e não o que é mau. Quem faz o bem é de Deus, e quem faz o mal nunca viu Deus.
12 Todos falam bem de Demétrio, e a própria verdade fala bem dele. Nós também falamos bem a respeito dele, e você sabe que o que dizemos é verdade.

Help Christians Who Teach Truth
1 From the Elder [or old man; C Greek: presbyteros, referring to advanced age, a church office, or both; 1 Tim. 5:17; 1 Pet. 5:1; see 2 John 1].
To ·my dear friend [L the beloved] Gaius [C an otherwise unknown Christian leader], whom I love in the truth [C the truth about the Gospel of Jesus Christ]:
2 ·My dear friend [L Beloved], I pray that you are ·doing well [prospering] in ·every way [all respects] and that your health is good, just as ·your soul is doing fine [it is well with your soul; your soul is prospering]. 3 [L For] I was very happy when some brothers and sisters came and ·told me [testified] about the truth in your life and how you are ·following [L walking in] the way of truth [2 John 4]. 4 Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children [C members of the church under his spiritual care] are ·following the way of truth [walking in the truth].
5 ·My dear friend [L Beloved], ·it is good that [you are living out your faith when] you help the brothers and sisters, even those ·you do not know [L who are strangers]. 6 They ·told [testified before] the church about your love. ·Please help them [You will do well] to continue their trip [C as missionaries] in a way worthy of God. 7 [L For] They ·started out in service to Christ [L departed for the sake of the name], and they have been accepting ·nothing [no support] from nonbelievers [L Gentiles; pagans]. 8 So we should ·help [show hospitality to; support] such people; when we do, we ·share in their work [become coworkers] for the truth.
9 I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be ·their leader [first], will not ·listen to us [receive us; or accept our authority]. 10 So if I come, I will ·talk about [call to mind; bring attention to] what Diotrephes [C nothing further is known about this man] is doing, about how he ·lies and says evil things about us [slanders us with evil/malicious words]. But ·more than [not satisfied with] that, he refuses to ·accept [welcome; receive] the other brothers and sisters; he even ·stops [prevents] those who do want to ·accept [welcome; receive] them and ·puts them out of [expels them from] the church.
11 ·My dear friend [Beloved], do not ·follow [imitate] what is ·bad [evil]; ·follow [imitate] what is good [1 Cor. 4:16; 11:1; 1 Thess. 1:6; 2:14; 2 Thess. 3:7; Heb. 6:12; 13:7]. The one who does good ·belongs to [is from] God. But the one who does evil has never ·known [L seen] God.
12 Everyone ·says [witnesses/testifies to] good things about Demetrius [C likely the bearer of the letter to Gaius; otherwise unknown], and the truth agrees with what they say. We also ·speak [witness; testify] well of him, and you know ·what we say [our witness/testimony] is true.
13 I have many things I want to write you, but I do not want to use pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon and talk face to face. 15 Peace to you. The friends here greet you. Please greet each friend there by name [2 John 12–13].

1 The elder,(A)
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) 6 They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)
11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)
13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(T)
