信心使我們勝過世界
5 凡信耶穌是基督的，都是從 神生的，凡愛那生他的，也必愛那從他而生的。 2 我們若愛 神，並且遵行他的命令，就知道我們是愛 神的兒女了。 3 我們遵守 神的命令，就是愛他了；而且他的命令是不難遵守的， 4 因為凡從 神生的就勝過世界。使我們勝過世界的，就是我們的信心。 5 勝過世界的是誰呢？不就是那信耶穌是 神的兒子的嗎？
神為他兒子作的見證
6 那藉著水和血來的就是耶穌基督，不是單用水，而是用水又用血；作見證的是聖靈，因為聖靈就是真理。 7 原來作見證的有三樣， 8 就是聖靈、水和血，這三樣是一致的。 9 我們若接受人的見證， 神的見證就更強而有力了，因為這是 神為他的兒子作的見證。 10 信 神的兒子的，就有這見證在他心裡；不信 神的，就是把 神當作說謊的，因為他不信 神為他兒子所作的見證。 11 這見證就是 神已經把永遠的生命賜給我們，這生命是在他兒子裡面的。 12 凡有 神兒子的，就有生命；沒有 神兒子的，就沒有生命。
要照 神的旨意祈求
13 我把這些事寫給你們信 神的兒子之名的人，是要你們知道自己有永生。 14 如果我們照著 神的旨意祈求，他必聽我們；這就是我們對 神所存的坦然無懼的心。 15 既然我們知道他聽我們的祈求，我們就知道，我們無論求甚麼，他必賜給我們。
16 如果有人看見弟兄犯了不至於死的罪，他就要祈求， 神必因他的緣故，把生命賜給那些犯了不至於死的罪的人；有至於死的罪，我不說他應當為那罪祈求。 17 一切不義都是罪，但也有不至於死的罪。
18 我們知道凡從 神生的就不犯罪，而且從 神生的那一位也必保守他，連那惡者也不能碰他。 19 我們知道我們是屬於 神的，而整個世界是伏在那惡者手下。 20 我們知道 神的兒子已經來了，並且賜給我們悟性，使我們能認識那位真實者。我們也在那位真實者裡面，就是在他兒子耶穌基督裡面。這一位就是真神，也是永遠的生命。 21 孩子們，你們要保守自己遠離偶像。

5 凡是相信耶穌是基督的，都是由神所生的。凡是愛那生身之父的，也都愛那由父所生的。 2 當我們愛神，並遵行[a]他命令的時候，從這一點就知道我們愛神的兒女了。 3 原來屬神的愛是這樣的，就是我們要遵守他的命令；而他的命令並不是沉重的， 4 因為凡是由神所生的，就勝過世界；而這勝過世界的勝利，就是我們的信仰。 5 勝過世界的到底是誰呢？難道不是那相信耶穌是神兒子的嗎？
從神來的見證
6 藉著水和血而來的那一位，就是耶穌基督，不僅藉著水，也藉著水和血；並且聖靈是做見證的那一位，因為聖靈就是真理。 7 原來，做見證的有三者：[b] 8 聖靈、水和血；而這三者是一致的[c]。 9 我們既然接受人的見證，神的見證就更應該接受[d]了，因為這是神的見證，就是神為他的兒子所做的見證。 10 那信神兒子的，就有這見證在他裡面；那不信神的，就把神當做說謊者，因為他不相信神為自己的兒子所做的見證。 11 這見證就是：神把永恆的生命賜給了我們，並且這生命在他兒子裡面。
12 那有了神兒子的，就有了這生命；那沒有神兒子的，就沒有這生命。 13 我把這些事寫給你們信神兒子之名的人，好讓你們知道：你們有永恆的生命[e]。
有功效的禱告
14 我們對神所懷的確信是這樣的：如果我們按照他的旨意求什麼，他就垂聽我們。 15 如果我們已經知道凡是我們所求的他都垂聽，我們就知道我們已經擁有了向他所求的。
16 如果有人看見自己的弟兄在犯不至於死的罪，就應該為他祈求；這樣，神[f]將把生命賜給他，就是給那些犯不至於死的罪的人。有一種罪是至於死的；關於那種罪我不說要祈求。 17 一切不義都是罪，也有不至於死的罪。
結語
18 我們知道：凡是由神所生的人，就不會繼續犯罪；原來，由神所生的那一位保守著他[g][h]，那惡者也就不碰他。
19 我們知道：我們屬於神，但整個世界都伏在那惡者之下。
20 我們也知道：神的兒子已經來了，並且把領悟的心賜給了我們，使我們能認識真實的那一位[i]。我們在真實的那一位裡面，也就是在他的兒子耶穌基督裡面——這一位就是真神，就是永恆的生命。
21 孩子們哪，你們要保守自己遠離偶像。[j]

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God
5 Everyone who believes(A) that Jesus is the Christ(B) is born of God,(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.(D) 2 This is how we know(E) that we love the children of God:(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.(G) And his commands are not burdensome,(H) 4 for everyone born of God(I) overcomes(J) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(K)
6 This is the one who came by water and blood(L)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.(M) 7 For there are three(N) that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony,(O) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,(P) which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.(Q) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,(R) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,(S) and this life is in his Son.(T) 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.(U)
Concluding Affirmations
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(V) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(W) 14 This is the confidence(X) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(Y) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(Z) that we have what we asked of him.(AA)
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(AB) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(AC) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(AD) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(AE) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(AF)
18 We know that anyone born of God(AG) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(AH) cannot harm them.(AI) 19 We know that we are children of God,(AJ) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(AK) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(AL) and has given us understanding,(AM) so that we may know him who is true.(AN) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(AO)
