3 你們看，父賜給我們的是怎樣的愛，就是讓我們可以稱為 神的兒女，我們也真是他的兒女。因此，世人不認識我們，是因為他們不認識父。 2 親愛的，現在我們是 神的兒女，將來怎樣，還沒有顯明；然而我們知道：主若顯現，我們必要像他，因為我們必要看見他本來是怎樣的。 3 凡對他存著這盼望的，就潔淨自己，像他一樣的潔淨。
4 凡是犯罪的，就是作了不法的事；罪就是不法。 5 你們知道主曾經顯現，為要除掉罪，他自己卻沒有罪。 6 凡是住在他裡面的，就不犯罪；凡犯罪的，是未曾見過他，也不認識他。 7 孩子們，不要受人欺騙，行義的才是義人，正如主是公義的。 8 犯罪的是出於魔鬼，因為魔鬼從起初就犯罪。因此， 神的兒子顯現了，是要除滅魔鬼的作為。 9 凡是從 神生的，就不犯罪，因為 神的生命（“ 神的生命”原文作“種子”）在他裡面；他也不能犯罪，因為他是從 神生的。 10 這樣，誰是 神的兒女，誰是魔鬼的兒女，就很明顯了。凡不行義的，就不是出於 神，不愛弟兄的，也是這樣。

19-20 這樣，我們就知道我們是屬於真理的。即使我們的心責備我們，在 神面前我們也可以心安理得，因為他比我們的心大，他知道一切。 21 親愛的，我們的心若不責備我們，在 神面前我們就可以坦然無懼了。 22 凡我們所求的，就必從他得著，因為我們遵守他的命令，作他所喜悅的事。 23 神的命令，就是要我們信他的兒子耶穌基督的名，並且照著他的吩咐彼此相愛。 24 凡是遵守 神命令的，就住在 神裡面， 神也住在他裡面。憑著 神所賜給我們的聖靈，我們就可以知道 神住在我們裡面。

上帝的兒女
3 你們看，父上帝何等愛我們，稱我們為祂的兒女！我們也實在是祂的兒女，世人之所以不認識我們，是因為他們不認識父上帝。 2 親愛的弟兄姊妹，我們現在是上帝的兒女，將來如何還未顯明。但我們知道，當主顯現的時候，我們必會像祂，因為我們必見到祂的本體。 3 凡心存這種盼望的人都會自潔，因為主是聖潔的。
4 犯罪的人都違背上帝的律法，違背上帝的律法就是罪。 5 你們知道，耶穌降世是為了除掉人的罪，祂自己並沒有罪。 6 住在祂裡面的人不會一直犯罪；一直犯罪的人既沒見過祂也不認識祂。
7 孩子們，不要受人迷惑，要知道行義的才是義人，正如主是公義的。 8 一直犯罪的人是屬魔鬼的，因為魔鬼從起初便犯罪，但上帝兒子的顯現是為了摧毀魔鬼的工作。 9 從上帝生的人不會繼續犯罪，因為他裡面有上帝的生命[a]。他不能犯罪，因為他是從上帝生的。 10 這樣，就可以看出誰是上帝的兒女，誰是魔鬼的兒女。凡不按公義行事、不愛弟兄姊妹的，都不是上帝的兒女。
彼此相愛
11 我們應當彼此相愛，這是你們起初聽見的信息。 12 不要步該隱的後塵。他屬於那惡者，殺害了自己的弟弟。他為什麼要殺害自己的弟弟呢？因為他的行為邪惡，而他弟弟秉行公義。
13 弟兄姊妹，世人若恨你們，不要驚奇。 14 我們因愛弟兄姊妹，便知道自己已經出死入生了。不愛弟兄姊妹的，仍然陷在死亡中。 15 恨弟兄姊妹的就是殺人的，你們知道殺人的沒有永生。 16 主耶穌為我們捨命，我們由此便知道什麼是愛，我們也應當為弟兄姊妹捨命。 17 如果一個豐衣足食的人看見貧窮的弟兄姊妹，卻毫無憐憫之心，怎能說他愛上帝呢？ 18 所以，孩子們啊，不要單在口頭上說愛人，總要以真誠的行動表現出來。

The Command to Love
3 Behold (A)what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that (B)we should be called children of [a]God! Therefore the world does not know [b]us, (C)because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, (D)now we are children of God; and (E)it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, (F)we shall be like Him, for (G)we shall see Him as He is. 3 (H)And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Sin and the Child of God
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and (I)sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know (J)that He was manifested (K)to take away our sins, and (L)in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 (M)He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, (N)that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been (O)born of God does not sin, for (P)His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
The Imperative of Love(Q)
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, (R)that we should love one another, 12 not as (S)Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if (T)the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [c]his brother abides in death. 15 (U)Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (V)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
The Outworking of Love
16 (W)By this we know love, (X)because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But (Y)whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little children, (Z)let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we [d]know (AA)that we are of the truth, and shall [e]assure our hearts before Him. 20 (AB)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, (AC)we have confidence toward God. 22 And (AD)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments (AE)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ (AF)and love one another, as He gave [f]us commandment.
The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error
24 Now (AG)he who keeps His commandments (AH)abides in Him, and He in him. And (AI)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
