約拿不悅
4 約拿對這事非常不高興，並且發起怒來， 2 就向耶和華禱告，說：“耶和華啊！我還在本國的時候，不是這樣說過嗎？我知道你是有恩典有憐憫的 神，不輕易發怒，並且有豐盛的慈愛，轉意不降災禍，所以我才急忙逃往他施去。 3 耶和華啊！現在求你取去我的性命吧，因為我死了比活著還好。”
神安排一棵蓖麻
4 耶和華回答說：“你這樣發怒對不對呢？”
5 約拿出了城，在城東坐下；他在那裡搭了一座棚，坐在棚蔭之下，要看看那城究竟怎樣。 6 耶和華 神安排一棵蓖麻，使它長起來高過約拿，成了陰影遮蓋他的頭，免他受苦；約拿因這棵蓖麻，就大大歡暢。 7 次日黎明的時候， 神安排一條蟲子，蛀蝕這棵蓖麻，蓖麻就枯槁了。 8 日出的時候， 神又安排炎熱的東風。烈日曬在約拿的頭上，以致發昏，他就為自己求死，說：“我死了比活著還好。”
9 神問約拿：“你因這棵蓖麻這樣發怒，對不對呢？”約拿說：“我發怒以至於死都是對的。”

10 耶和華說：“這棵蓖麻，不是你栽種的，也不是你使它長大的，一夜長成，一夜死去，你尚且愛惜它， 11 何況這尼尼微大城，其中不曉得分辨左右手的有十二萬多人，並且有許多牲畜，我怎能不愛惜呢？”

4 这事令约拿十分不悦，非常恼怒。 2 他向耶和华祷告说：“耶和华啊，我在家乡的时候岂不早就说过你会这样做吗？我知道你是一位有恩典、有怜悯的上帝，不轻易发怒，充满慈爱，不忍心降灾，所以我才急速逃往他施。 3 耶和华啊，求你收回我的性命吧，我死了比活着还好！” 4 耶和华对他说：“你这样大发脾气合理吗？”
5 于是，约拿跑到城外，在城东为自己搭了一个棚，坐在棚下荫凉处，要看看尼尼微城究竟会怎样。 6 后来，耶和华上帝安排了一棵蓖麻迅速地长起来，为约拿遮荫，使他的头免受日晒。约拿因有这棵蓖麻而非常欢喜。 7 第二天黎明的时候，上帝却安排了一条虫来咬这棵蓖麻，蓖麻就枯萎了。 8 太阳出来的时候，上帝刮起燥热的东风，烈日把约拿晒得发昏，他就再次求死说：“我死了比活着还好！”
9 上帝对约拿说：“你为这棵蓖麻大发脾气合理吗？”约拿回答说：“我就是气死了也合理。” 10 耶和华说：“这棵蓖麻不是你种的，也不是你栽培的，它在一夜之间长成，又在一夜之间死去，你尚且如此爱惜， 11 我怎能不爱惜这尼尼微大城呢？城中单是连左右手都分不清的人就有十二万多，还有许多的牲畜。”

Jonah balks at God’s mercy
4 But Jonah thought this was utterly wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Come on, Lord! Wasn’t this precisely my point when I was back in my own land? This is why I fled to Tarshish earlier! I know that you are a merciful and compassionate God, very patient, full of faithful love, and willing not to destroy. 3 At this point, Lord, you may as well take my life from me, because it would be better for me to die than to live.”
4 The Lord responded, “Is your anger a good thing?” 5 But Jonah went out from the city and sat down east of the city. There he made himself a hut and sat under it, in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.
6 Then the Lord God provided a shrub,[a] and it grew up over Jonah, providing shade for his head and saving him from his misery. Jonah was very happy about the shrub. 7 But God provided a worm the next day at dawn, and it attacked the shrub so that it died. 8 Then as the sun rose God provided a dry east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint. He begged that he might die, saying, “It’s better for me to die than to live.”
9 God said to Jonah, “Is your anger about the shrub a good thing?”
Jonah said, “Yes, my anger is good—even to the point of death!”
10 But the Lord said, “You ‘pitied’ the shrub, for which you didn’t work and which you didn’t raise; it grew in a night and perished in a night. 11 Yet for my part, can’t I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand people who can’t tell their right hand from their left, and also many animals?”

Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked
4 But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became (A)angry. 2 He (B)prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this [a]what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore [b]in order to forestall this I (C)fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a (D)gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please (E)take my [c]life from me, for death is (F)better to me than life.” 4 The Lord said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?”
5 Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of [d]it. There he made a shelter for himself and (G)sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. 6 So the Lord God appointed a [e]plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was [f]extremely happy about the [g]plant. 7 But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it (H)withered. 8 When the sun came up God appointed a scorching (I)east wind, and the (J)sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, “(K)Death is better to me than life.”
9 Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” 10 Then the Lord said, “You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which [h]came up overnight and perished [i]overnight. 11 Should I not (L)have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not (M)know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many (N)animals?”
