Segundo discurso de Eliú
34 Eliú añadió entonces:
2 «Ustedes, los sabios, ¡escuchen mis palabras!
Ustedes, los doctos, ¡préstenme atención!
3 Con el paladar se prueba el sabor de la comida,
y con el oído se prueba la calidad de las palabras.
4 Los invito a elegir lo que es justo,
y a que descubramos aquello que sea bueno.
5 »Job ya nos ha dicho que es un hombre bueno,
y que Dios lo ha tratado injustamente;
6 que no puede mentir en su caso,
y que sufre mucho sin haber pecado.
7 »¿Quién puede compararse a Job,
que calma su sed burlándose de todo?
8 ¡Anda en compañía de malhechores!
¡Se junta con gente malvada!
9 ¡Asegura que nada gana el hombre
con hacer la voluntad de Dios!
10 »Pero ustedes son inteligentes. ¡Escúchenme!
¡Nada más ajeno a Dios que la maldad!
¡El Todopoderoso no comete injusticias!
11 Le da a cada uno lo que merece;(A)
le paga conforme a sus hechos.
12 Dios no hace nada malo;
el Todopoderoso no pervierte la justicia.
13 ¿Quién puso el mundo en sus manos?
¿Quién le encargó ordenar este mundo?
14 Si Dios pensara sólo en sí mismo,
y retomara su espíritu y su hálito de vida,
15 ¡todos nosotros moriríamos al instante
y la humanidad entera volvería a ser polvo!
16 »Si eres entendido, escucha esto;
presta atención a lo que te estoy diciendo.
17 ¿Acaso puede gobernar quien no ama la justicia?
¿Y acaso puedes tú condenar al que es justo?
18 ¿Quién puede acusar al rey de ser perverso,
o tachar de criminales a los hombres importantes?
19 Dios no hace acepción de personas;
trata igual a los ricos y a los pobres,
pues todos somos obra de sus manos.
20 Todos podemos morir en cualquier momento;
los pueblos se rebelan en medio de la noche,
pero pasan, lo mismo que los poderosos:
son derrocados sin que medie la violencia.
21 Dios conoce los caminos del hombre,
y vigila cada uno de sus pasos.
22 Ni las sombras más oscuras
esconden a los que practican la maldad.
23 Dios no impone al hombre fecha alguna
para que comparezca ante él en el juicio.
24 En un instante quebranta a los poderosos,
y hace que otros ocupen su lugar.
25 Puesto que él conoce las obras de todos,
en medio de la noche los derriba y extermina.
26 Los castiga, como a criminales,
en donde todo el mundo pueda verlos,
27 porque ellos se apartaron de él
y no obedecieron sus mandamientos;
28 hicieron que los pobres elevaran sus lamentos
y que los hambrientos dejaran oír su clamor.
29 Si Dios se calla, ¿quién se lo puede reprochar?
Si se oculta de los hombres, ¿quién podrá encontrarlo?
¡Ni todo un pueblo, ni todos los hombres!
30 De lo contrario, el malvado tendría poder
y el pueblo sería objeto de injusticias.
31 »¿Acaso le has dicho a Dios:
“Ya he sufrido tu castigo. No volveré a pecar”?
32 ¿O le has dicho: “No supe lo que hacía.
Si he actuado mal, no volveré a hacerlo.”?
33 ¿Acaso todo debe hacerse a tu manera?
Es Dios quien decide qué hacer, y no tú;
pero si sabes otra cosa, ¡habla ya!
34 Cualquier hombre inteligente te dirá lo mismo;
el que es sabio dirá lo mismo que yo:
35 “Job no está en su sano juicio,
porque lo que dice no tiene sentido.”
36 Yo propongo que Job sea puesto a prueba,
porque habla como todos los malvados.
37 Además de malvado, Job es rebelde;
con aplausos se burla de nosotros,
y son muchas sus ofensas contra Dios.»

Eliú justifica a Dios
34 Además Eliú dijo:
2 Oíd, sabios, mis palabras;
Y vosotros, doctos, estadme atentos.
3 Porque el oído prueba las palabras,
Como el paladar gusta lo que uno come.
4 Escojamos para nosotros el juicio,
Conozcamos entre nosotros cuál sea lo bueno.
5 Porque Job ha dicho: Yo soy justo,
Y Dios me ha quitado mi derecho.
6 ¿He de mentir yo contra mi razón?
Dolorosa es mi herida sin haber hecho yo transgresión.
7 ¿Qué hombre hay como Job,
Que bebe el escarnio como agua,
8 Y va en compañía con los que hacen iniquidad,
Y anda con los hombres malos?
9 Porque ha dicho: De nada servirá al hombre
El conformar su voluntad a Dios.
10 Por tanto, varones de inteligencia, oídme:
Lejos esté de Dios la impiedad,
Y del Omnipotente la iniquidad.
11 Porque él pagará al hombre según su obra,(A)
Y le retribuirá conforme a su camino.
12 Sí, por cierto, Dios no hará injusticia,
Y el Omnipotente no pervertirá el derecho.
13 ¿Quién visitó por él la tierra?
¿Y quién puso en orden todo el mundo?
14 Si él pusiese sobre el hombre su corazón,
Y recogiese así su espíritu y su aliento,
15 Toda carne perecería juntamente,
Y el hombre volvería al polvo.
16 Si, pues, hay en ti entendimiento, oye esto;
Escucha la voz de mis palabras.
17 ¿Gobernará el que aborrece juicio?
¿Y condenarás tú al que es tan justo?
18 ¿Se dirá al rey: Perverso;
Y a los príncipes: Impíos?
19 ¿Cuánto menos a aquel que no hace acepción de personas de príncipes.
Ni respeta más al rico que al pobre,
Porque todos son obra de sus manos?
20 En un momento morirán,
Y a medianoche se alborotarán los pueblos, y pasarán,
Y sin mano será quitado el poderoso.
21 Porque sus ojos están sobre los caminos del hombre,
Y ve todos sus pasos.
22 No hay tinieblas ni sombra de muerte
Donde se escondan los que hacen maldad.
23 No carga, pues, él al hombre más de lo justo,
Para que vaya con Dios a juicio.
24 Él quebrantará a los fuertes sin indagación,
Y hará estar a otros en su lugar.
25 Por tanto, él hará notorias las obras de ellos,
Cuando los trastorne en la noche, y sean quebrantados.
26 Como a malos los herirá
En lugar donde sean vistos;
27 Por cuanto así se apartaron de él,
Y no consideraron ninguno de sus caminos,
28 Haciendo venir delante de él el clamor del pobre,
Y que oiga el clamor de los necesitados.
29 Si él diere reposo, ¿quién inquietará?
Si escondiere el rostro, ¿quién lo mirará?
Esto sobre una nación, y lo mismo sobre un hombre;
30 Haciendo que no reine el hombre impío
Para vejaciones del pueblo.
31 De seguro conviene que se diga a Dios:
He llevado ya castigo, no ofenderé ya más;
32 Enséñame tú lo que yo no veo;
Si hice mal, no lo haré más.
33 ¿Ha de ser eso según tu parecer?
Él te retribuirá, ora rehúses, ora aceptes, y no yo;
Di, si no, lo que tú sabes.
34 Los hombres inteligentes dirán conmigo,
Y el hombre sabio que me oiga:
35 Que Job no habla con sabiduría,
Y que sus palabras no son con entendimiento.
36 Deseo yo que Job sea probado ampliamente,
A causa de sus respuestas semejantes a las de los hombres inicuos.
37 Porque a su pecado añadió rebeldía;
Bate palmas contra nosotros,
Y contra Dios multiplica sus palabras.

Elihu Vindicates God’s Justice
34 Then Elihu continued and said,
2 “Hear my words, you wise men,
And listen to me, you who understand.
3 For (A)the ear tests words
As the palate tastes food.
4 Let us choose for ourselves what is right;
Let us understand among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job has said, ‘(B)I am righteous,
But (C)God has taken away my right;
6 [a]Should I lie about my right?
My [b](D)wound is incurable, though I am without wrongdoing.’
7 What man is like Job,
Who (E)drinks up derision like water,
8 Who goes (F)in company with the workers of injustice,
And walks with wicked people?
9 For he has said, ‘(G)It is of no use to a man
When he becomes friends with God.’
10 “Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding.
Far be it from God to (H)do evil,
And from the Almighty to do wrong.
11 For He repays a person for (I)his work,
And lets things happen in correspondence to a man’s [c]behavior.
12 (J)God certainly will not act wickedly,
And the Almighty will not pervert justice.
13 Who (K)gave Him authority over the earth?
And who (L)has placed the whole world on Him?
14 If He were to [d]determine to do so,
If He were to (M)gather His [e]spirit and His breath to Himself,
15 [f](N)Humanity would perish together,
And mankind would (O)return to dust.
16 “But if you have understanding, hear this;
Listen to the sound of my words.
17 Shall (P)one who hates justice rule?
And (Q)will you condemn the righteous mighty One,
18 Who says to a king, ‘You worthless one,’
To nobles, ‘You wicked one’;
19 Who shows no (R)partiality to the prominent,
Nor regards the rich as above the poor,
Since they are all the (S)work of His hands?
20 In a moment they die, and (T)at midnight
People are shaken and pass away,
And (U)the powerful are taken away without a hand.
21 “For (V)His eyes are upon the ways of a person,
And He sees all his steps.
22 There is (W)no darkness or deep shadow
Where the workers of injustice can hide themselves.
23 For He does not (X)need to consider a person further,
That he should go before God in judgment.
24 He breaks in pieces the (Y)mighty without investigation,
And sets others in their place.
25 Therefore He (Z)knows their deeds,
And (AA)He overthrows them in the night,
And they are crushed.
26 He (AB)strikes them like the wicked
[g]In a public place,
27 Because they (AC)turned aside from following Him,
And (AD)had no regard for any of His ways,
28 So that they caused (AE)the cry of the poor to come to Him,
And that He would (AF)hear the cry of the afflicted—
29 When He keeps quiet, who can condemn?
And when He hides His face, who then can look at Him,
That is, regarding both nation and a person?—
30 So that (AG)godless people would not rule,
Nor be snares for the people.
31 “For has anyone said to God,
‘I have endured punishment;
I will not offend anymore;
32 Teach me what I do not see;
If I have (AH)done wrong,
I will not do it again’?
33 Shall God (AI)repay on your terms, because you have rejected His?
For you must choose, and not I;
Therefore declare what you know.
34 Men of understanding will say to me,
And a wise man who hears me,
35 ‘Job (AJ)speaks without knowledge,
And his words are without wisdom.
36 Oh that Job were tested [h]to the limit,
Because [i]he answers (AK)like sinners.
37 For he adds (AL)rebellion to his sin;
He (AM)claps his hands among us,
And multiplies his words against God.’”

5 “Job says, ‘I am innocent,(E)
but God denies me justice.(F)
6 Although I am right,
I am considered a liar;(G)
although I am guiltless,(H)
his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’(I)
7 Is there anyone like Job,
who drinks scorn like water?(J)
8 He keeps company with evildoers;
he associates with the wicked.(K)
9 For he says, ‘There is no profit
in trying to please God.’(L)
10 “So listen to me,(M) you men of understanding.(N)
Far be it from God to do evil,(O)
from the Almighty to do wrong.(P)
11 He repays everyone for what they have done;(Q)
he brings on them what their conduct deserves.(R)
12 It is unthinkable that God would do wrong,(S)
that the Almighty would pervert justice.(T)
13 Who appointed(U) him over the earth?
Who put him in charge of the whole world?(V)
14 If it were his intention
and he withdrew his spirit[a](W) and breath,(X)
15 all humanity would perish(Y) together
and mankind would return to the dust.(Z)
16 “If you have understanding,(AA) hear this;
listen to what I say.(AB)
17 Can someone who hates justice govern?(AC)
Will you condemn the just and mighty One?(AD)
18 Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’
and to nobles,(AE) ‘You are wicked,’(AF)
19 who shows no partiality(AG) to princes
and does not favor the rich over the poor,(AH)
for they are all the work of his hands?(AI)
20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night;(AJ)
the people are shaken and they pass away;
the mighty are removed without human hand.(AK)
21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals;(AL)
he sees their every step.(AM)
22 There is no deep shadow,(AN) no utter darkness,(AO)
where evildoers can hide.(AP)
23 God has no need to examine people further,(AQ)
that they should come before him for judgment.(AR)
24 Without inquiry he shatters(AS) the mighty(AT)
and sets up others in their place.(AU)
25 Because he takes note of their deeds,(AV)
he overthrows them in the night(AW) and they are crushed.(AX)
26 He punishes them for their wickedness(AY)
where everyone can see them,
27 because they turned from following him(AZ)
and had no regard for any of his ways.(BA)
28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him,
so that he heard the cry of the needy.(BB)
29 But if he remains silent,(BC) who can condemn him?(BD)
If he hides his face,(BE) who can see him?
Yet he is over individual and nation alike,(BF)
30 to keep the godless(BG) from ruling,(BH)
from laying snares for the people.(BI)
31 “Suppose someone says to God,
‘I am guilty(BJ) but will offend no more.
32 Teach me what I cannot see;(BK)
if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’(BL)
33 Should God then reward you on your terms,
when you refuse to repent?(BM)
You must decide, not I;
so tell me what you know.
34 “Men of understanding declare,
wise men who hear me say to me,
35 ‘Job speaks without knowledge;(BN)
his words lack insight.’(BO)
36 Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost
for answering like a wicked man!(BP)
37 To his sin he adds rebellion;
scornfully he claps his hands(BQ) among us
and multiplies his words(BR) against God.”(BS)
