13 “这一切,我亲眼见过,
亲耳听过,且已明白。
你们知道的我也知道,
我不比你们逊色。
我想和全能者对话,
我渴望跟上帝理论。
而你们只会编造谎言,
都是无用的庸医。
但愿你们闭口不言,
那样还算你们明智。
请听我的申辩,
留心听我的争讼。
你们要为上帝说谎,
为祂说诡诈的话吗?
你们要偏袒上帝吗?
你们要替祂辩护吗?
祂查问你们时岂会有好结果?
你们岂能像欺骗人一样欺骗祂?
10 你们若暗中偏袒,
祂必责备你们。
11 难道你们不怕祂的威严,
不对祂充满恐惧吗?
12 你们的名言是无用的灰尘,
你们的雄辩是土筑的营垒。

13 “你们住口,让我发言;
我愿承担一切后果。
14 我已经豁出性命,
不惜冒生命危险。
15 祂必杀我,我毫无指望,[a]
但我仍要在祂面前申辩。
16 这样我才能得救,
因为不信上帝的人无法到祂面前。
17 请留心听我说话,
侧耳听我发言。
18 看啊,我已准备好辩词,
我知道自己有理。
19 若有人能指控我,
我就缄默,情愿死去。
20 上帝啊,只要你应允两件事,
我就不躲避你的面,
21 求你把手从我身上挪开,
不要用你的威严惊吓我。
22 这样,你传唤我,我必回应;
或者让我陈述,你来回答。
23 我究竟有什么过错和罪恶?
求你指出我的过犯和罪愆。
24 你为何掩面不看我?
为何把我当作仇敌?
25 你要恐吓一片风中的落叶吗?
你要追赶一根枯干的茅草吗?
26 你记下指控我的罪状,
让我承担幼年的罪恶。
27 你给我上了脚镣,
监视我的一举一动,
为我的脚掌设界限。
28 我消逝如朽烂之物,
又如虫蛀的衣服。

13 3 Job compareth his knowledge with the experience of his friends. 16 The penitent shall be saved, and the hypocrite condemned, 20 He prayeth unto God, that he would not handle him rigorously.

Lo, mine eye hath seen all this: mine ear hath heard, and understood it.

I know also as much as you know: I am not inferior unto you.

But I will speak to the Almighty, and I desire [a]to dispute with God.

For indeed ye forge lies, and all you are [b]physicians of no value.

Oh, that you would hold your tongue, that it might be imputed to you for wisdom!

Now hear my disputation, and give ear to the arguments of my lips.

Will ye speak [c]wickedly for God’s defense, and talk deceitfully for his cause?

Will ye accept his person? or will ye contend for God?

Is it well that he should seek of you? will you make a lie for him, as one lieth for a man?

10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept any person.

11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his fear fall upon you?

12 Your [d]memories may be compared unto ashes, and your bodies unto bodies of clay.

13 Hold your tongues in my presence, that I may speak, and let come upon what will.

14 Wherefore do I [e]take my flesh in my teeth, and put my soul in my hand?

15 Lo, though he slay me, yet will I trust in him, and I will reprove my ways in his sight.

16 He shall be my salvation also: for the [f]hypocrite shall not come before him.

17 Hear diligently my words, and mark my talk.

18 Behold now: if I prepare me to judgment, I know that I shall be [g]justified.

19 Who is he that will plead [h]with me? for if I now hold my tongue, I [i]die.

20 But do not these two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.

21 [j]Withdraw thine hand from me, and let not thy fear make me afraid.

22 Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

23 How many are [k]mine iniquities and sins, show me my rebellion and my sin.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and takest me for thine enemy?

25 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the [l]iniquities of my youth.

27 Thou puttest my feet also in the [m]stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths, and makest the print thereof in the [n]heels of my feet.

28 Such a one consumeth like a rotten thing, and as a garment that is moth-eaten.

I’m Taking My Case to God

13 1-5 “Yes, I’ve seen all this with my own eyes,
    heard and understood it with my very own ears.
Everything you know, I know,
    so I’m not taking a backseat to any of you.
I’m taking my case straight to God Almighty;
    I’ve had it with you—I’m going directly to God.
You graffiti my life with lies.
    You’re a bunch of pompous quacks!
I wish you’d shut your mouths—
    silence is your only claim to wisdom.

6-12 “Listen now while I make my case,
    consider my side of things for a change.
Or are you going to keep on lying ‘to do God a service’?
    to make up stories ‘to get him off the hook’?
Why do you always take his side?
    Do you think he needs a lawyer to defend himself?
How would you fare if you were in the witness stand?
    Your lies might convince a jury—but would they convince God?
He’d reprimand you on the spot
    if he detected a bias in your witness.
Doesn’t his splendor put you in awe?
    Aren’t you afraid to speak cheap lies before him?
Your wise sayings are knickknack wisdom,
    good for nothing but gathering dust.

13-19 “So hold your tongue while I have my say,
    then I’ll take whatever I have coming to me.
Why do I go out on a limb like this
    and take my life in my hands?
Because even if he killed me, I’d keep on hoping.
    I’d defend my innocence to the very end.
Just wait, this is going to work out for the best—my salvation!
    If I were guilt-stricken do you think I’d be doing this—
    laying myself on the line before God?
You’d better pay attention to what I’m telling you,
    listen carefully with both ears.
Now that I’ve laid out my defense,
    I’m sure that I’ll be acquitted.
Can anyone prove charges against me?
    I’ve said my piece. I rest my case.

Why Does God Stay Hidden and Silent?

20-27 “Please, God, I have two requests;
    grant them so I’ll know I count with you:
First, lay off the afflictions;
    the terror is too much for me.
Second, address me directly so I can answer you,
    or let me speak and then you answer me.
How many sins have been charged against me?
    Show me the list—how bad is it?
Why do you stay hidden and silent?
    Why treat me like I’m your enemy?
Why kick me around like an old tin can?
    Why beat a dead horse?
You compile a long list of mean things about me,
    even hold me accountable for the sins of my youth.
You hobble me so I can’t move about.
    You watch every move I make,
    and brand me as a dangerous character.

28 “Like something rotten, human life fast decomposes,
    like a moth-eaten shirt or a mildewed blouse.”

13 See, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ozen hath heard and understood it.

What ye know, of the same I have da’as also; I am not inferior unto you.

Surely I would speak to Shaddai, and I desire to reason with El (G-d).

But ye are forgers of sheker, ye are all rofim (physicians) of no value.

O that ye would altogether hold your peace! And it should be your chochmah.

Hear now my tokhachat (protest, public argumentation), and pay heed to the pleadings of my lips.

Will ye talk wickedly on behalf of El (G-d) and speak deceitfully for Him?

Will ye be partial to Him? Will ye play the part of the defense attorney for El?

Is it hatov that He should search you out? Or do you play the jester with Him, as one plays the jester with enosh?

10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do act with partiality beseter (secretly).

11 Shall not His majesty make you afraid? And the pachad of Him fall upon you?

12 Your zichron meshalim (memorable sayings) are like unto ashes, your defenses are strongholds of chomer (clay).

13 Hold your peace, let me alone, that Ani (I) may speak, and let come on me what will.

14 Why do I take my basar in my teeth, and take my nefesh in mine yad?

15 Though He slay me, yet will I wait for and trust in Him; but I will maintain my derech before Him.

16 He also shall be my Yeshuah (salvation); for a chanef (irreligious man, hypocrite) shall not come before Him.

17 Hear diligently my confession, and my declaration with your oznayim.

18 Hinei now, I have prepared my mishpat (cause, case); I know that I shall be acquitted.

19 Who is he that can contend against me? For atah (now), if I hold my tongue, I shall expire.

20 Only do not shtayim (two things) unto me; then will I not hide myself from Thee.

21 Withdraw Thine hand far from me, and let not Thy eimah (dread, terror) make me afraid.

22 Then kerah (summon), and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer me.

23 How many are mine avonot and chatta’ot? Make me to know my peysha and my chattat.

24 Lammah (why) hidest Thou Thy face, and holdest me for Thine enemy?

25 Wilt Thou frighten away a leaf driven to and fro? And wilt Thou pursue the dry kash (straw, chaff)?

26 For Thou writest down merorot (bitter things) against me, and makest me to inherit the avonot of my neurim (youth).

27 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and observest kol orkhot (paths, ways) of me; Thou settest a mark upon the soles of my raglayim,

28 Around one who wastes away as a rotten thing, as a beged (garment) that is moth eaten.
