耶和华勉励约书亚

1 耶和华的仆人摩西死了以后，耶和华吩咐摩西的侍从，嫩的儿子约书亚，说： ²“我的仆人摩西死了；现在你要起来，和全体人民过这约旦河，到我现在要赐给他们以色列人的地去。 ³你们脚掌踏过的每一处地方，我都照着我应许摩西的赐给你们了。 ⁴从旷野和这黎巴嫩，直到大河，就是幼发拉底河，赫人的全地，以至大海日落的地方，就是你们的疆界。 ⁵你一生的日子必没有一人能在你面前立得住；我怎样与摩西同在，也必照样与你同在；我决不离开你，也不离弃你。 ⁶你要坚强勇敢，因为你必使这人民得着我曾经向他们列祖起誓，要赐给他们的那地作产业。 ⁷你只要坚强，十分勇敢，谨守遵行我仆人摩西吩咐你的一切律法，不可偏离左右，好使你无论到哪里去，都可以亨通。 ⁸这律法书不可离开你的口，要昼夜默诵，好使你谨守遵行书中所记的一切；这样，你的道路就必顺利，你必一路亨通。 ⁹我不是吩咐过你要坚强勇敢吗？所以，你不要惧怕，也不要惊慌；因为你无论到哪里去，耶和华你的　神必与你同在。”

¹⁰于是约书亚吩咐人民的官长说： ¹¹“你们要走遍营中，吩咐人民说：‘你们要预备粮食，因为三天之内，你们要过这约旦河，进去得耶和华你们的　神要赐给你们作产业的地。’”

¹²约书亚又对流本人、迦得人和玛拿西半个支派的人说： ¹³“你们要记住耶和华的仆人摩西吩咐你们的话：‘耶和华你们的　神赐你们安息，他必把这地赐给你们。’ ¹⁴你们的妻子、孩子和牲畜，都可以留在约旦河东边、摩西赐给你们的地上；但你们所有英勇的战士，都要拿起武器，在你们的兄弟前面过河去，帮助他们； ¹⁵等到耶和华使你们的兄弟可以和你们一样安居，同样得着耶和华你们的　神要赐给他们作产业的地，你们才可以回到你们所得的地，以它作你们的产业，就是耶和华的仆人摩西在约旦河东边日出之地赐给你们的地方。” ¹⁶他们回答约书亚，说：“你吩咐我们的一切，我们都必遵行；无论你差派我们到哪里去，我们都一定去。 ¹⁷我们从前怎样凡事听从摩西，现在也必照样听从你；唯愿耶和华你的　神与你同在，像与摩西同在一样。 ¹⁸无论谁违背你的话，不听从你吩咐他的一切命令，那人必要处死。你只管坚强勇敢。”

Joshua Becomes the Leader of Israel

1 Moses, the Lord's servant, was dead. So the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The Lord said:

²My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the Jordan River into the land I'm giving to all of you. ³^(A) Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses. ⁴It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the northeast as far as the great Euphrates River. It will include the land of the Hittites,^[a] and the land from here at the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. ⁵^(B) Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.

^6-8^(C) Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law^[b] he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.

⁹I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.

The Eastern Tribes Promise To Help

¹⁰Joshua ordered the tribal leaders ¹¹to go through the camp and tell everyone:

In a few days we will cross the Jordan River to take the land that the Lord our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.

¹²^(D) Joshua told the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh:^[c]

^13-14The Lord's servant Moses said that the Lord our God has given you land here on the east side of the Jordan River, where you could live in peace. Your wives and children and your animals can stay here in the land Moses gave you. But all of you that can serve in our army must pick up your weapons and lead the men of the other tribes across the Jordan River. They are your relatives, so you must help them ¹⁵conquer the land that the Lord is giving them. The Lord will give peace to them as he has given peace to you, and then you can come back and settle here in the land that Moses promised you.

¹⁶The men answered:

We'll cross the Jordan River and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us. ^17-18If the Lord our God will help you as he helped Moses, and if you are strong and brave, we will obey you as we obeyed Moses. We'll even put to death anyone who rebels against you or refuses to obey you.
