The Sixth Sign: Healing a Man Born Blind

9 As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. ² His disciples questioned Him: “Rabbi,^(A) who sinned, this man^(B) or his parents,^(C) that he was born blind?”

³ “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works^(D) might be displayed in him. ⁴ We^[a] must do the works^(E) of Him who sent Me^[b] while it is day.^(F) Night is coming when no one can work. ⁵ As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”^(G)

⁸ “Rabbi,”^(A) the disciples told Him, “just now the Jews tried to stone You,^(B) and You’re going there again?”

⁹ “Aren’t there 12 hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.^{(C) 10} If anyone walks during the night,^(D) he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”

³⁵ Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.^(A) Walk while you have the light^(B) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.^(C) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.^{(D) 36} While you have the light,^(E) believe in the light so that you may become sons of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.^(F)
