醫治盲人
9 耶穌在路上看見一個生來失明的人。 2 門徒問耶穌：「老師，這個人生下來便雙目失明，是因為他犯了罪呢，還是他父母犯了罪呢？」
3 耶穌說：「不是他犯了罪，也不是他父母犯了罪，而是要在他身上彰顯上帝的作為。 4 趁著白天，我們必須做差我來者的工作，黑夜一到，就沒有人能工作了。 5 我在世上的時候，是世界的光。」
6 耶穌講完後，便吐唾沫在地上，用唾沫和泥抹在那盲人的眼睛上， 7 對他說：「到西羅亞池去洗洗！」西羅亞是「奉差遣」的意思。那盲人照著去做，回來的時候已經能看見了。
8 他的鄰居和從前見他討飯的人說：「他不是那個常在這裡討飯的人嗎？」
9 有人說：「是他。」有人說：「不是他，只是長得像他。」
他自己說：「我就是那個人。」
10 他們問：「你的眼睛是怎麼好的？」
11 他回答說：「有一位叫耶穌的人和泥抹我的眼睛，叫我到西羅亞池子去洗。我照著去做，眼睛就能看見了。」
12 他們問：「那個人現在在哪裡？」他說：「我不知道。」
盤問復明的盲人
13 他們就把這個從前失明的人帶到法利賽人那裡。 14 耶穌和泥開他眼睛的那天是安息日。 15 法利賽人也查問他的眼睛是怎麼復明的。盲人便對他們說：「祂把泥抹在我的眼睛上，我去一洗，眼睛就看見了。」
16 有些法利賽人說：「那個人不是從上帝那裡來的，因為祂不守安息日。」有些人卻說：「如果祂是個罪人，又怎能行這樣的神蹟呢？」他們就爭論起來。
17 於是，他們又問那個盲人：「既然祂開了你的眼睛，你認為祂是什麼人？」
他說：「祂是先知。」
18 猶太人不相信他以前是瞎眼的，現在能看見了，便叫來他的父母， 19 問他們：「這是你們的兒子嗎？你們不是說他生來就瞎眼嗎？怎麼現在能看見了？」
20 他父母回答說：「我們知道他是我們的兒子，生來雙目失明。 21 至於他現在怎麼能看見了，我們就不知道了。是誰醫好了他，我們也不知道。他現在已經長大成人，你們可以去問他，他自己可以回答。」
22 他父母因為害怕那些猶太人，所以才這樣說，因為那些猶太人早就商量好了，誰承認耶穌是基督，就把他趕出會堂。 23 因此他父母才說他已經長大成人，叫他們去問他。
24 法利賽人又把那個從前失明的人叫來，對他說：「你應該把榮耀歸給上帝[a]！我們知道那個人是罪人。」
25 他說：「祂是不是罪人，我不知道；我只知道從前我是瞎眼的，現在能看見了。」
26 他們就問他：「祂向你做了些什麼？祂是怎樣醫好你眼睛的？」
27 他回答說：「我已經告訴過你們了，你們不聽，現在又問，難道你們也想作祂的門徒嗎？」
28 他們就罵他：「你才是祂的門徒！我們是摩西的門徒。 29 我們知道上帝曾對摩西講話，至於這個人，我們不知道祂是從哪裡來的。」
30 那人說：「祂開了我的眼睛，你們竟不知道祂從哪裡來，真是奇怪。 31 我們知道上帝不聽罪人的禱告，只聽那些敬拜祂、遵行祂旨意者的禱告。 32 從創世以來，從未聽過有人能把天生失明的人醫好。 33 如果這個人不是從上帝那裡來的，就什麼也不能做。」
34 法利賽人斥責他：「你這生來就深陷罪中的傢伙，居然敢教導我們！」於是把他趕了出去。
35 耶穌聽說了這事，後來祂找到這個人，對他說：「你信上帝的兒子嗎？」
36 他說：「先生，誰是上帝的兒子？我要信祂。」
37 耶穌說：「你已經看見祂了，現在跟你說話的就是祂。」
38 他說：「主啊！我信！」他就敬拜耶穌。
39 耶穌說：「我為了審判來到這世界，使瞎眼的可以看見，使看得見的反成了瞎眼的。」
40 有些跟祂在一起的法利賽人聽了這句話，就問：「難道我們也瞎了眼嗎？」
41 耶穌說：「如果你們是瞎眼的，就沒有罪了。但現在你們自稱看得見，所以你們的罪還在。」

9 இயேசு நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கும்போது, ஒரு குருடனைப் பார்த்தார். அவன் பிறந்தது முதல் குருடனாக இருந்தான். 2 இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் அவரிடம், “போதகரே! இந்த மனிதன் குருடனாகப் பிறந்தான். யார் செய்த பாவம் இவனைக் குருடனாக்கியது? அது இவனது பாவமா? அல்லது இவனது பெற்றோர் செய்த பாவமா?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
3 இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “இவனது பாவமோ, இவனது பெற்றோரின் பாவமோ இவனைக் குருடன் ஆக்கவில்லை. நான் இவனைக் குணப்படுத்தும்போது தேவனின் வல்லமை இவன் மூலமாக வெளிப்படும்படியாக இவன் குருடனாகப் பிறந்தான். 4 பகலாக இருக்கும்போது மட்டும்தான் என்னை அனுப்பினவருடைய செயல்களை நாம் செய்யவேண்டும். இரவு வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. எவராலும் இரவில் வேலை செய்யமுடியாது. 5 நான் உலகத்தில் இருக்கும்வரை உலகத்துக்கு நானே ஒளியாக இருக்கிறேன்” என்றார்.
6 இயேசு இவற்றைச் சொன்ன பிறகு, அவர் புழுதியில் துப்பினார். அதில் சேறு உண்டாக்கினார். அதனை அவனது கண்களின் மேல் பூசினார். 7 இயேசு அவனிடம், “போ, சீலோவாம் குளத்தில் (சீலோவாம் என்றால் ‘அனுப்பப்பட்டவன்’ என்று பொருள்) கழுவு” என்றார். அதன்படியே அந்த மனிதன் குளத்திற்குச் சென்றான். அவன் கழுவிவிட்டுத் திரும்பி வந்தான். இப்பொழுது பார்வை பெற்றிருந்தான்.
8 இவன் இதற்கு முன்னால் பிச்சை எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்ததைப் பலர் பார்த்திருந்தனர். அவர்களும் அவனது சுற்றத்தார்களும், “பாருங்கள்! இவன் அங்கே உட்கார்ந்து எப்பொழுதும் பிச்சை எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த அதே மனிதனல்லவா?” என்றனர்.
9 இன்னும் சிலர், “ஆம். இவன்தான் அவன்”, என்றனர். ஆனால் இன்னும் சிலர், “இல்லை. இவன் அவன் இல்லை. இவன் அவனைப்போன்றே இருக்கிறான்” என்றனர்.
அப்போது அவன் தானாகவே, “முன்பு குருட்டுப் பிச்சைக்காரனாக இருந்தவன் நான்தான்” என்றான்.
10 “என்ன நடந்தது? நீ எப்படிப் பார்வை பெற்றாய்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
11 அதற்கு அவன், “இயேசு என்று மக்களால் அழைக்கப்படுகிற அந்த மனிதர் ஏதோ சேறு உண்டாக்கினார். அதனை என் கண்களின்மீது தடவினார். பிறகு அவர் என்னிடம் சீலோவாம் குளத்தில் போய் கழுவச் சொன்னார். ஆகையால் நான் போய் கழுவினேன். பின்னர் என்னால் பார்க்க முடிந்தது” என்றான்.
12 அந்த மனிதனிடம் மக்கள், “எங்கே அந்த மனிதர்?”
என்று கேட்டனர். அதற்கு அந்த மனிதன் “எனக்குத் தெரியாது” என்று கூறினான்.
இயேசு குணமாக்கிய மனிதனிடம் யூதர்களின் விசாரணை
13 பிறகு மக்கள் பரிசேயரிடம் அந்த மனிதனை அழைத்துச்சென்றனர். குருடாயிருந்த அந்த மனிதன் இவன்தான். 14 இயேசு சேறு உண்டாக்கி இவனது கண்களைக் குணப்படுத்தினார். அவர் இதனை ஓய்வு நாளில் செய்திருக்கிறார். 15 ஆகையால் இப்பொழுது பரிசேயர்கள் அந்த மனிதனிடம், “எப்படி நீ பார்வை பெற்றாய்?” என மீண்டும் கேட்டனர். அதற்கு அந்த மனிதன், “அவர் என் கண்களின்மேல் சேற்றைப் பூசினார். நான் கழுவினேன். இப்பொழுது என்னால் பார்க்க முடிகிறது” என்றான்.
16 சில பரிசேயர்கள், “அந்த மனிதன் ஓய்வு நாள் பற்றிய சட்டங்களுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியவில்லை. எனவே அவன் தேவனிடமிருந்து வரவில்லை” என்றனர்.
ஆனால் சிலரோ, “பாவம் செய்கிற எந்த மனிதராலும் இதுபோன்ற அற்புதங்களைச் செய்ய முடியாதே” என்றனர். யூதர்கள் தங்களுக்குள் ஒத்துப்போகவில்லை.
17 யூதர்கள் குருடனாயிருந்த அந்த மனிதனிடம் மீண்டும் கேட்டார்கள். “இயேசு உன்னைக் குணமாக்கினான். உன்னால் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. அவனைப்பற்றி நீ என்ன சொல்கிறாய்?”
அந்த மனிதன் “அவர் ஒரு தீர்க்கதரிசி” என்றான். 18 அந்த மனிதன் குருடனாயிருந்து பார்வை பெற்றது குறித்து யூதர்களுக்கு இன்னும் முழுமையான நம்பிக்கை ஏற்படவில்லை. எனவே அந்த மனிதனின் பெற்றோர்களுக்கு ஆளனுப்பினர். 19 யூதர்கள் அவனது பெற்றோர்களிடம், “இவன் உங்கள் குமாரன்தானே. அவன் குருடனாகவே பிறந்தான் என்று சொன்னீர்கள். இப்பொழுது அவனால் எவ்வாறு பார்க்கமுடிகிறது?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
20 அதற்கு அவனது பெற்றோர்கள், “இவன் எங்கள் குமாரன் என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். அவன் குருடனாகப் பிறந்தான் என்பதும் தெரியும். 21 அவன் இப்போது எப்படிப் பார்க்கிறான் என்றும், கண்களைக் குணமாக்கியது யார் என்றும் எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. அவனைக் கேளுங்கள். அவனே பதில் சொல்லுகிற வகையில் வளர்ந்திருக்கிறான்” என்றனர். 22 ஏனென்றால் அவர்களுக்கு யூதத் தலைவர்களைப்பற்றிய அச்சம் இருந்தது. இயேசுதான் கிறிஸ்து என்று சொல்கிற எவரொருவரையும் தண்டித்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று யூதத்தலைவர்கள் முடிவு செய்திருந்தனர். அவர்கள் அம்மக்களை வழிபாட்டு இடத்திலிருந்து விலக்கியும் வைப்பர். 23 எனவே அவனது பெற்றோர்கள். “இவன் வளர்ந்து நிற்கிறவன். அவனையே கேளுங்கள்” என்றனர்.
24 முன்பு குருடனாயிருந்த அந்த மனிதனை மீண்டும் அழைத்தார்கள். யூதத் தலைவர்கள் அவனிடம், “நீ உண்மையைச் சொல்லி தேவனை மகிமைப்படுத்து. இந்த மனிதன் ஒரு பாவி என்று நாங்கள் அறிந்திருக்கிறோம்” என்றனர்.
25 “அவர் பாவியென்று எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் எனக்கு ஒன்று தெரியும். நான் முன்பு குருடனாக இருந்தேன். இப்போது என்னால் பார்க்க முடிகிறது” என்று அந்த மனிதன் சொன்னான்.
26 அதற்கு யூதத்தலைவர்கள், “உனக்கு அவன் என்ன செய்தான். எப்படி அவன் உன் கண்களைக் குணப்படுத்தினான்?” எனக் கேட்டனர்.
27 “நான் ஏற்கெனவே சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் நான் சொல்வதை நீங்கள் கேட்பதில்லை. ஏன் மீண்டும் அதைக் கேட்க விரும்புகிறீர்கள்? அவரது சீஷராக விரும்புகிறீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான்.
28 யூதத்தலைவர்கள் கோபம்கொண்டனர். அவனைக் கெட்ட வார்த்தைகளால் திட்டினர். “நீதான் இயேசுவின் சீஷன். நாங்கள் மோசேயின் சீஷர்கள். 29 தேவன் மோசேயிடம் பேசினார் என்று எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். ஆனால் இந்த மனிதன் எங்கிருந்து வந்தான் என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது” என்றனர்.
30 அதற்கு அம்மனிதன் “இது மிகவும் ஆச்சரியமான ஒன்று. இயேசு எங்கிருந்து வந்தார் என்பது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் அவர் என் கண்களைக் குணப்படுத்தினார். 31 பாவிகளுக்கு தேவன் செவிக்கொடுப்பதில்லையென்று அறிந்திருக்கிறோம். பக்தியும் கீழ்ப்படிதலும் உள்ள ஒருவனுக்கு தேவன் செவிகொடுப்பார். 32 பிறவி குருட்டு மனிதனைக் குணப்படுத்திய அற்புதம் முதன் முறையாக இப்போதுதான் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளது. 33 இயேசு தேவனிடமிருந்தே வந்திருக்க வேண்டும். அவர் தேவனிடமிருந்து வந்திராவிட்டால் அவரால் இதுபோன்ற செயல்களைச் செய்ய இயலாது” என்றான்.
34 அதற்கு யூதத்தலைவர்கள், “நீ முழுவதும் பாவத்தில் பிறந்திருக்கிறாய். நீ எங்களுக்கு உபதேசிக்க முயற்சிக்கிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டனர். பின்னர் அவனை வெளியே தள்ளினர்.
ஆன்மீகக் குருடு
35 அவர்கள் அவனை வெளியேற்றியதை இயேசு அறிந்தார். அவர் அவனிடம் வந்து, “நீ மனிதகுமாரனிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை உடையவனாக இருக்கிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டார்.
36 அதற்கு அவன், “அவரை நான் நம்பும்படியாக அந்த மனிதகுமாரன் யார் என்று எனக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றான்.
37 “நீ ஏற்கெனவே அவரைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறாய். இப்போது உன்னோடு பேசிக்கொண்டிருப்பவர்தான் அந்த மனிதகுமாரன்” என்றார்.
38 உடனே அவன், “ஆண்டவரே! நான் நம்புகிறேன்” என்றான். இயேசுவை அவன் குனிந்து வணங்கினான்.
39 “இந்த உலகம் நியாயம் தீர்க்கப்படும்படியாக நான் இந்த உலகத்துக்கு வந்தேன். குருடர்கள் பார்வை பெறும்படியாக நான் வந்தேன். காண்கிறவர்கள் எனத் தம்மை நினைத்துக்கொள்கிறவர்கள் குருடராகும்படியாக நான் வந்தேன்” என்றார் இயேசு.
40 இயேசுவுடன் சில பரிசேயர்களும் இருந்தனர். அவர்கள் இயேசு சொல்வதைக் கேட்டனர். “என்ன? நாங்களும்கூட குருடர்கள் என்றா கூறுகின்றாய்?” எனக் கேட்டனர்.
41 இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு, “நீங்கள் உண்மையிலேயே குருடராயிருந்தால் நீங்கள் பாவம் செய்த குற்றவாளிகள் அல்ல. ஆனால் உங்களுக்குப் பார்வை உண்டு என நீங்கள் சொல்வதால், நீங்கள் குற்றவாளிகளே” என்றார்.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)

14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

La guérison d’un aveugle
9 En partant, Jésus aperçut sur son chemin un homme qui était aveugle de naissance. 2 Ses disciples lui posèrent alors cette question : Dis-nous, Maître, pourquoi cet homme est-il né aveugle ? Est-ce à cause de son propre péché ou de celui de ses parents ?
3 Jésus répondit : Cela n’a pas de rapport avec son péché, ni avec celui de ses parents ; c’est pour qu’en lui tous puissent voir ce que Dieu est capable de faire. 4 Il nous faut accomplir les œuvres de celui qui m’a envoyé tant qu’il fait jour ; la nuit vient où plus personne ne pourra travailler. 5 Aussi longtemps que je suis encore dans le monde, je suis la lumière du monde.
6 Après avoir dit cela, Jésus cracha par terre et, avec sa salive, il fit un peu de boue qu’il appliqua sur les yeux de l’aveugle. 7 Puis il lui dit : Va te laver au réservoir de Siloé[a] (le mot « Siloé » veut dire : « envoyé »).
L’aveugle alla se laver et, à son retour, il voyait.
8 Ses voisins et ceux qui avaient l’habitude de le voir mendier dirent : Cet homme, n’est-ce pas celui qui était toujours assis en train de mendier ?
9 Les uns affirmaient : C’est bien lui.
D’autres le niaient : Ce n’est pas lui ; c’est quelqu’un qui lui ressemble.
Quant à lui, il disait : C’est bien moi.
10 Alors on le questionna : Comment se fait-il que tes yeux se soient ouverts ?
11 Il répondit : L’homme qui s’appelle Jésus a fait un peu de boue, m’en a frotté les yeux, puis il m’a dit : « Va à Siloé et lave-toi. » J’y suis allé, je me suis lavé et, d’un coup, j’ai vu clair.
12 – Et lui, demandèrent-ils, où est-il ?
– Je n’en sais rien, répondit-il.
L’enquête sur le miracle
13 On amena l’homme qui avait été aveugle devant les pharisiens. 14 Or, c’était un jour de sabbat que Jésus avait fait de la boue pour lui ouvrir les yeux. 15 Les pharisiens lui demandèrent donc, à leur tour, comment il avait recouvré la vue.
Il leur répondit : Il m’a mis de la boue sur les yeux, je me suis lavé, et maintenant j’y vois.
16 Là-dessus, quelques pharisiens déclarèrent : Cet homme ne peut pas venir de Dieu, puisqu’il ne respecte pas le sabbat.
Pourtant d’autres objectaient : Comment un homme pécheur aurait-il le pouvoir d’accomplir de tels signes miraculeux ?
Ils étaient donc divisés. 17 Alors ils interrogèrent de nouveau l’aveugle : Voyons, toi, que dis-tu de lui, puisque c’est à toi qu’il a ouvert les yeux ?
– C’est sûrement un prophète, répondit-il.
18 Mais ils refusèrent de croire que cet homme avait été aveugle et qu’il avait été guéri de sa cécité. Finalement, ils firent venir ses parents.
19 Ils leur demandèrent : Cet homme est-il bien votre fils ? Est-il réellement né aveugle ? Comment se fait-il qu’à présent il voie ?
20 – Nous sommes certains que c’est bien notre fils, répondirent les parents, et qu’il est né aveugle. 21 Mais comment il se fait qu’il voie à présent, nous ne le savons pas. Ou qui lui a rendu la vue, nous ne le savons pas davantage. Interrogez-le donc lui-même. Il est assez grand pour répondre sur ce qui le concerne.
22 Les parents parlaient ainsi parce qu’ils avaient peur des Juifs. En effet, ils avaient déjà décidé d’exclure de la synagogue tous ceux qui reconnaîtraient Jésus comme le Messie. 23 Voilà pourquoi les parents de l’aveugle avaient répondu : « Il est assez grand, interrogez-le donc lui-même. »
24 Les pharisiens firent donc venir une seconde fois celui qui avait été aveugle et lui dirent : Honore Dieu en disant la vérité. Cet homme est un pécheur, nous le savons.
25 – S’il est pécheur ou non, répondit-il, je n’en sais rien. Mais il y a une chose que je sais : j’étais aveugle et maintenant, je vois.
26 Ils lui demandèrent de nouveau : Qu’est-ce qu’il t’a fait ? Redis-nous comment il s’y est pris pour t’ouvrir les yeux.
27 – Je vous l’ai déjà dit, leur répondit-il, et vous ne m’avez pas écouté. Pourquoi tenez-vous à me le faire répéter ? Est-ce que, par hasard, vous avez l’intention de devenir vous aussi ses disciples ?
28 Alors, ils se mirent à l’injurier et ils lui lancèrent : C’est toi qui es son disciple ; nous, nous sommes les disciples de Moïse. 29 Nous savons que Dieu a parlé à Moïse ; mais celui-là, nous ne savons même pas d’où il vient.
30 – C’est étonnant, répliqua l’homme. Voilà quelqu’un qui m’a ouvert les yeux et vous, vous ne savez même pas d’où il est. 31 Tout le monde sait que Dieu n’exauce pas les pécheurs ; mais si quelqu’un est attaché à Dieu et fait sa volonté, il l’exauce. 32 Depuis que le monde est monde, jamais on n’a entendu dire que quelqu’un ait rendu la vue à un aveugle de naissance. 33 Si cet homme-là ne venait pas de Dieu, il n’aurait rien pu faire.
34 – Comment ! répondirent-ils, depuis ta naissance tu n’es que péché des pieds à la tête, et c’est toi qui veux nous faire la leçon !
Et ils le mirent à la porte.
Les vrais aveugles
35 Jésus apprit qu’ils l’avaient expulsé. Il alla le trouver et lui demanda : Crois-tu au Fils de l’homme ?
36 Il lui répondit : Qui est-ce ? Dis-le-moi, Seigneur[b], pour que je puisse croire en lui.
37 Jésus lui dit : Tu le vois de tes yeux. C’est lui-même qui te parle maintenant.
38 – Je crois, Seigneur, déclara l’homme, et il se prosterna devant lui[c].
39 Jésus dit alors : Je suis venu dans ce monde pour qu’un jugement ait lieu, pour que ceux qui ne voient pas voient, et que ceux qui voient deviennent aveugles.
40 Des pharisiens qui se trouvaient près de lui entendirent ces paroles et lui demandèrent : Serions-nous, par hasard, nous aussi des aveugles ?
41 – Si vous étiez de vrais aveugles, leur dit Jésus, vous ne seriez pas coupables. Mais voilà : vous prétendez que vous voyez ; aussi votre culpabilité reste entière.
