拿淫婦來質難主
8 於是各人都回家去了。耶穌卻往橄欖山去。 2 清早又回到殿裡，眾百姓都到他那裡去，他就坐下教訓他們。 3 文士和法利賽人帶著一個行淫時被拿的婦人來，叫她站在當中， 4 就對耶穌說：「夫子，這婦人是正行淫之時被拿的。 5 摩西在律法上吩咐我們把這樣的婦人用石頭打死，你說該把她怎麼樣呢？」 6 他們說這話乃試探耶穌，要得著告他的把柄。耶穌卻彎著腰，用指頭在地上畫字。 7 他們還是不住地問他，耶穌就直起腰來，對他們說：「你們中間誰是沒有罪的，誰就可以先拿石頭打她。」 8 於是又彎著腰，用指頭在地上畫字。 9 他們聽見這話，就從老到少，一個一個地都出去了，只剩下耶穌一人，還有那婦人仍然站在當中。
不要再犯罪
10 耶穌就直起腰來，對她說：「婦人，那些人在哪裡呢？沒有人定你的罪嗎？」 11 她說：「主啊，沒有。」耶穌說：「我也不定你的罪。去吧，從此不要再犯罪了！」
主是世界的光
12 耶穌又對眾人說：「我是世界的光。跟從我的，就不在黑暗裡走，必要得著生命的光。」 13 法利賽人對他說：「你是為自己作見證，你的見證不真。」 14 耶穌說：「我雖然為自己作見證，我的見證還是真的；因我知道我從哪裡來，往哪裡去。你們卻不知道我從哪裡來，往哪裡去。 15 你們是以外貌[a]判斷人，我卻不判斷人。 16 就是判斷人，我的判斷也是真的，因為不是我獨自在這裡，還有差我來的父與我同在。 17 你們的律法上也記著說：『兩個人的見證是真的。』 18 我是為自己作見證，還有差我來的父也是為我作見證。」 19 他們就問他說：「你的父在哪裡？」耶穌回答說：「你們不認識我，也不認識我的父；若是認識我，也就認識我的父。」 20 這些話是耶穌在殿裡的庫房教訓人時所說的，也沒有人拿他，因為他的時候還沒有到。
不信主的必死在罪裡
21 耶穌又對他們說：「我要去了，你們要找我，並且你們要死在罪中。我所去的地方你們不能到。」 22 猶太人說：「他說『我所去的地方你們不能到』，難道他要自盡嗎？」 23 耶穌對他們說：「你們是從下頭來的，我是從上頭來的；你們是屬這世界的，我不是屬這世界的。 24 所以我對你們說，你們要死在罪中；你們若不信我是基督，必要死在罪中。」 25 他們就問他說：「你是誰？」耶穌對他們說：「就是我從起初所告訴你們的。 26 我有許多事講論你們，判斷你們；但那差我來的是真的，我在他那裡所聽見的，我就傳給世人。」 27 他們不明白耶穌是指著父說的。 28 所以耶穌說：「你們舉起人子以後，必知道我是基督，並且知道我沒有一件事是憑著自己做的。我說這些話乃是照著父所教訓我的。 29 那差我來的是與我同在，他沒有撇下我獨自在這裡，因為我常做他所喜悅的事。」 30 耶穌說這話的時候，就有許多人信他。
真理叫人得以自由
31 耶穌對信他的猶太人說：「你們若常常遵守我的道，就真是我的門徒， 32 你們必曉得真理，真理必叫你們得以自由。」 33 他們回答說：「我們是亞伯拉罕的後裔，從來沒有做過誰的奴僕，你怎麼說『你們必得以自由』呢？」 34 耶穌回答說：「我實實在在地告訴你們：所有犯罪的就是罪的奴僕。 35 奴僕不能永遠住在家裡，兒子是永遠住在家裡。 36 所以天父的兒子若叫你們自由，你們就真自由了。
誰為亞伯拉罕的真子孫
37 「我知道你們是亞伯拉罕的子孫，你們卻想要殺我，因為你們心裡容不下我的道。 38 我所說的，是在我父那裡看見的；你們所行的，是在你們的父那裡聽見的。」 39 他們說：「我們的父就是亞伯拉罕！」耶穌說：「你們若是亞伯拉罕的兒子，就必行亞伯拉罕所行的事。 40 我將在神那裡所聽見的真理告訴了你們，現在你們卻想要殺我，這不是亞伯拉罕所行的事。 41 你們是行你們父所行的事。」他們說：「我們不是從淫亂生的。我們只有一位父，就是神！」
出於神的必聽神的話
42 耶穌說：「倘若神是你們的父，你們就必愛我。因為我本是出於神，也是從神而來；並不是由著自己來，乃是他差我來。 43 你們為什麼不明白我的話呢？無非是因你們不能聽我的道。 44 你們是出於你們的父魔鬼，你們父的私慾你們偏要行。他從起初是殺人的，不守真理，因他心裡沒有真理。他說謊是出於自己，因他本來是說謊的，也是說謊之人的父。 45 我將真理告訴你們，你們就因此不信我。 46 你們中間誰能指證我有罪呢？我既然將真理告訴你們，為什麼不信我呢？ 47 出於神的必聽神的話，你們不聽，因為你們不是出於神。」 48 猶太人回答說：「我們說你是撒馬利亞人，並且是鬼附著的，這話豈不正對嗎？」 49 耶穌說：「我不是鬼附著的。我尊敬我的父，你們倒輕慢我。 50 我不求自己的榮耀，有一位為我求榮耀、定是非的。 51 我實實在在地告訴你們：人若遵守我的道，就永遠不見死。」 52 猶太人對他說：「現在我們知道你是鬼附著的。亞伯拉罕死了，眾先知也死了，你還說『人若遵守我的道，就永遠不嘗死味』。 53 難道你比我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕還大嗎？他死了，眾先知也死了。你將自己當做什麼人呢？」 54 耶穌回答說：「我若榮耀自己，我的榮耀就算不得什麼。榮耀我的乃是我的父，就是你們所說是你們的神。 55 你們未曾認識他，我卻認識他。我若說不認識他，我就是說謊的，像你們一樣。但我認識他，也遵守他的道。
耶穌言己在亞伯拉罕之先
56 「你們的祖宗亞伯拉罕歡歡喜喜地仰望我的日子，既看見了，就快樂。」 57 猶太人說：「你還沒有五十歲，豈見過亞伯拉罕呢？」 58 耶穌說：「我實實在在地告訴你們：還沒有亞伯拉罕就有了我。」 59 於是他們拿石頭要打他，耶穌卻躲藏，從殿裡出去了。

8 1 耶稣却到橄榄山去。 2 清早，他又回到圣殿里。众百姓都到他那里去，他就坐下，教导他们。 3 文士和法利赛人带着一个犯奸淫时被捉的女人来，叫她站在当中， 4 然后对耶稣说：“老师，这女人是正在犯奸淫的时候被捉到的。 5 摩西在律法书上命令我们把这样的女人用石头打死。那么，你怎么说呢？” 6 他们说这话是要试探耶稣，要抓到控告他的把柄。耶稣却弯下腰，用指头在地上写字。 7 他们还是不住地问他，耶稣就直起腰来，对他们说：“你们中间谁没有罪，谁就先拿石头打她！” 8 于是他又弯着腰，用指头在地上写字。 9 他们听见这话，从老的开始，一个一个都走开了，只剩下耶稣一人和那仍然站在中间的女人。 10 耶稣就直起腰来，对她说：“妇人，那些人在哪里呢？没有任何人定你的罪吗？” 11 她说：“主啊，没有。”耶稣说：“我也不定你的罪。去吧！从今以后不要再犯罪了。”〕[a]
耶稣是世界的光
12 耶稣又对众人说：“我就是世界的光。跟从我的，必不在黑暗里走，却要得着生命的光。” 13 法利赛人对他说：“你是为自己作见证，你的见证不真。” 14 耶稣回答他们，对他们说：“即使我为自己作见证，我的见证还是真的，因为我知道我从哪里来，到哪里去。你们却不知道我从哪里来，到哪里去。 15 你们是以人的标准来判断人，我不判断任何人。 16 即使我判断人，我的判断也是真确的，因为不是我独自在判断，而是差我来的父与我一同判断。 17 你们的律法也记着说：‘两个人的见证才算为真’。 18 我是为自己作见证，还有差我来的父也为我作见证。” 19 于是他们问他：“你的父在哪里？”耶稣回答：“你们不认识我，也不认识我的父；若是认识我，也会认识我的父。” 20 这些话是耶稣在圣殿的银库房里教导人的时候说的。当时没有人捉拿他，因为他的时候还没有到。
我所去的地方你们不能去
21 于是耶稣又对他们说：“我去了，你们会找我，而你们会死在自己的罪中；我所去的地方，你们不能去。” 22 犹太人说：“他说‘我所去的地方，你们不能去’，难道他要自杀吗？” 23 耶稣对他们说：“你们是从下面来的，我是从上面来的；你们是属这世界的，我不是属这世界的。 24 所以我对你们说，你们会死在自己的罪中，你们若不信我就是那位，就会死在自己的罪中。” 25 他们就问他：“你到底是谁？”耶稣对他们说：“我从起初就告诉你们了。 26 我有许多事要讲论你们，判断你们；但差我来的那位是真实的，我从他那里所听见的，就告诉世人。” 27 他们不明白耶稣是对他们讲父的事。 28 所以耶稣说：“你们举起人子以后就会知道我就是那位了，并且知道我没有一件事是凭着自己做的。我说这些话是照着父所教导我的。 29 差我来的那位与我同在；他没有撇下我独自一人，因为我一直行他所喜悦的事。” 30 耶稣说这些话的时候，有许多人信了他。
真理使你们自由
31 耶稣对信他的犹太人说：“你们若继续遵守我的道，就真是我的门徒了。 32 你们将认识真理，真理会使你们自由。” 33 他们回答他：“我们是亚伯拉罕的后裔，从来没有作过谁的奴隶，你怎么说‘会使你们自由’呢？” 34 耶稣回答他们：“我实实在在地告诉你们，所有犯罪的人就是罪的奴隶。 35 奴隶不能永远住在家里；儿子才永远住在家里。 36 所以， 神的儿子若使你们自由，你们就真正自由了。”
出于 神的必听 神的话
37 “我知道，你们是亚伯拉罕的后裔，你们却想要杀我，因为你们心里容不下我的道。 38 我所说的是在我父那里看见的；你们所做的是在你们的父那里听到的。”
39 他们回答耶稣：“我们的父是亚伯拉罕。”耶稣对他们说：“你们若是亚伯拉罕的儿女，就会做亚伯拉罕所做的事。 40 我把在 神那里所听见的真理告诉了你们，现在你们却想要杀我；亚伯拉罕没有做过这样的事。 41 你们是做你们父的工作。”他们就对他说：“我们不是从淫乱生的，我们只有一位父，就是 神。” 42 耶稣对他们说：“假如 神是你们的父，你们会爱我，因为我本是出于 神，也是从 神而来，我不是凭着自己来，而是他差我来的。 43 你们为什么不明白我的话呢？无非是你们听不进我的道。 44 你们是出于你们的父魔鬼，你们宁愿随着你们父的欲念而行。他从起初就是杀人的，不守真理，因他心里没有真理。他说谎是出于自己的本性，因他本来是说谎的，也是说谎者之父。 45 但是，因为我讲真理，你们就不信我。 46 你们中间谁能指证我有罪呢？既然我讲真理，你们为什么不信我呢？ 47 出于 神的，必听 神的话；你们不听，因为你们不是出于 神。”
耶稣在亚伯拉罕之先
48 犹太人回答他：“我们说你是撒玛利亚人，并且是被鬼附的，这话不是很对吗？” 49 耶稣回答：“我没有被鬼附；我尊敬我的父，你们却不尊敬我。 50 我不寻求自己的荣耀，但有一位为我寻求荣耀，判断是非。 51 我实实在在地告诉你们，人若遵守我的道，就永远不经历死亡。” 52 于是犹太人对他说：“现在我们知道你是被鬼附了。亚伯拉罕死了，众先知也死了，你还说：‘人若遵守我的道，就永远不经历死亡。’ 53 难道你比我们的祖宗亚伯拉罕还大吗？他死了，众先知也死了，你把自己当作什么人呢？” 54 耶稣回答：“我若荣耀自己，我的荣耀就算不了什么；荣耀我的是我的父，就是你们所说的你们的 神。 55 你们不认识他，我却认识他。我若说不认识他，我就是说谎的，像你们一样；但我认识他，也遵守他的道。 56 你们的祖宗亚伯拉罕欢欢喜喜地仰望我的日子，他看见了，就快乐。” 57 犹太人就对他说：“你还没有五十岁，难道见过亚伯拉罕吗？” 58 耶稣对他们说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，还没有亚伯拉罕我就存在了。” 59 于是他们拿石头要打他，耶稣却躲开，走出了圣殿。

8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(A)
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
