醫好三十八年之病者

這事以後,到了猶太人的一個節期,耶穌就上耶路撒冷去。

耶路撒冷,靠近羊門有一個池子,希伯來話叫做畢士大,旁邊有五個廊子, 裡面躺著瞎眼的、瘸腿的、血氣枯乾的許多病人[a] 在那裡有一個人,病了三十八年。 耶穌看見他躺著,知道他病了許久,就問他說:「你要痊癒嗎?」 病人回答說:「先生,水動的時候,沒有人把我放在池子裡,我正去的時候,就有別人比我先下去。」 耶穌對他說:「起來,拿你的褥子走吧!」 那人立刻痊癒,就拿起褥子來走了。

猶太人責耶穌犯安息日

10 那天是安息日,所以猶太人對那醫好的人說:「今天是安息日,你拿褥子是不可的!」 11 他卻回答說:「那使我痊癒的對我說『拿你的褥子走吧』。」 12 他們問他說:「對你說『拿褥子走』的是什麼人?」 13 那醫好的人不知道是誰,因為那裡的人多,耶穌已經躲開了。 14 後來耶穌在殿裡遇見他,對他說:「你已經痊癒了,不要再犯罪,恐怕你遭遇的更加厲害。」 15 那人就去告訴猶太人,使他痊癒的是耶穌。 16 所以猶太人逼迫耶穌,因為他在安息日做了這事。 17 耶穌就對他們說:「我父做事直到如今,我也做事。」 18 所以猶太人越發想要殺他,因他不但犯了安息日,並且稱神為他的父,將自己和神當做平等。

尊敬子如尊敬父

19 耶穌對他們說:「我實實在在地告訴你們:子憑著自己不能做什麼,唯有看見父所做的,子才能做;父所做的事,子也照樣做。 20 父愛子,將自己所做的一切事指給他看,還要將比這更大的事指給他看叫你們稀奇。 21 父怎樣叫死人起來,使他們活著,子也照樣隨自己的意思使人活著。 22 父不審判什麼人,乃將審判的事全交於子, 23 叫人都尊敬子如同尊敬父一樣。不尊敬子的,就是不尊敬差子來的父。 24 我實實在在地告訴你們:那聽我話又信差我來者的,就有永生,不至於定罪,是已經出死入生了。 25 我實實在在地告訴你們:時候將到,現在就是了,死人要聽見神兒子的聲音,聽見的人就要活了。 26 因為父怎樣在自己有生命,就賜給他兒子也照樣在自己有生命, 27 並且因為他是人子,就賜給他行審判的權柄。 28 你們不要把這事看做稀奇。時候要到,凡在墳墓裡的,都要聽見他的聲音,就出來, 29 行善的復活得生,作惡的復活定罪。

30 「我憑著自己不能做什麼,我怎麼聽見就怎麼審判。我的審判也是公平的,因為我不求自己的意思,只求那差我來者的意思。 31 我若為自己作見證,我的見證就不真。 32 另有一位給我作見證,我也知道他給我作的見證是真的。 33 你們曾差人到約翰那裡,他為真理作過見證。 34 其實我所受的見證不是從人來的,然而我說這些話,為要叫你們得救。 35 約翰是點著的明燈,你們情願暫時喜歡他的光。 36 但我有比約翰更大的見證,因為父交給我要我成就的事,就是我所做的事,這便見證我是父所差來的。 37 差我來的父也為我作過見證。你們從來沒有聽見他的聲音,也沒有看見他的形象。 38 你們並沒有他的道存在心裡,因為他所差來的,你們不信。

聖經為耶穌的證據

39 「你們查考聖經[b],因你們以為內中有永生。給我作見證的就是這經, 40 然而你們不肯到我這裡來得生命 41 我不受從人來的榮耀。 42 但我知道,你們心裡沒有神的愛。 43 我奉我父的名來,你們並不接待我;若有別人奉自己的名來,你們倒要接待他。 44 你們互相受榮耀,卻不求從獨一之神來的榮耀,怎能信我呢?

不信摩西怎能信主

45 「不要想我在父面前要告你們,有一位告你們的,就是你們所仰賴的摩西 46 你們如果信摩西,也必信我,因為他書上有指著我寫的話。 47 你們若不信他的書,怎能信我的話呢?」

When these events were completed, Jesus led His followers to Jerusalem where they would celebrate a Jewish feast[a] together.

Jesus takes His disciples into one of the most miserable places they have ever seen. The suffering and impurity is frightening, but He comes to serve these precious people.

2-3 In Jerusalem they came upon a pool by the sheep gate surrounded by five covered porches. In Hebrew this place is called Bethesda.

Crowds of people lined the area, lying around the porches. All of these people were disabled in some way; some were blind, lame, paralyzed, or plagued by diseases[; and they were waiting for the waters to move. From time to time, a heavenly messenger would come to stir the water in the pool. Whoever reached the water first and got in after it was agitated would be healed of his or her disease].[b] 5-6 In the crowd, Jesus noticed one particular man who had been living with his disability for 38 years. He knew this man had been waiting here a long time.

Jesus (to the disabled man): Are you here in this place hoping to be healed?

Disabled Man: Kind Sir, I wait, like all of these people, for the waters to stir; but I cannot walk. If I am to be healed in the waters, someone must carry me into the pool. Without a helping hand, someone else beats me to the water’s edge each time it is stirred.

Jesus: Stand up, carry your mat, and walk.

At the moment Jesus uttered these words, a healing energy coursed through the man and returned life to his limbs—he stood and walked for the first time in 38 years. But this was the Sabbath Day; and any work, including carrying a mat, was prohibited on this day.

It is impossible to imagine this man’s excitement. His entire life has been defined by his illness. Now he is free from it. Free from the pain and weakness. Free from the depression that gripped his soul. Free, too, from the shame he always knew. Now he does not just walk—he runs and celebrates with friends and family. Everyone is rejoicing with him, except for some of the Jewish leaders. Instead, they drill him with questions as if they can disregard this miracle.

Jewish Leaders (to the man who had been healed): 10 Must you be reminded that it is the Sabbath? You are not allowed to carry your mat today!

Formerly Disabled Man: 11 The man who healed me gave me specific instructions to carry my mat and go.

Jewish Leaders: 12 Who is the man who gave you these instructions? How can we identify Him?

13 The man genuinely did not know who it was that healed him. In the midst of the crowd and the excitement of his renewed health, Jesus had slipped away. 14 Some time later, Jesus found him in the temple and again spoke to him.

Jesus: Take a look at your body; it has been made whole and strong. So avoid a life of sin, or else a calamity greater than any disability may befall you.

15 The man went immediately to tell the Jewish leaders that Jesus was the mysterious healer. 16 So they began pursuing and attacking Jesus because He performed these miracles on the Sabbath.

Jesus (to His attackers): 17 My Father is at work. So I, too, am working.

This issue keeps arising from the Jewish leaders. They do not appreciate the good things Jesus does on the Sabbath. Most Jews cower at the rebuke from these men, but Jesus does not. He is very clear about this. He cares for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized more than He cares for how some people may interpret and apply God’s law. It is easy to follow a set of rules; it is much harder to care for the things of the heart. He also makes it clear that those who follow His path are put on earth to serve. His followers’ service comes out of love for Him. All who follow Him are to love and to serve, especially on the Sabbath.

18 He was justifying the importance of His work on the Sabbath, claiming God as His Father in ways that suggested He was equal to God. These pious religious leaders sought an opportunity to kill Jesus, and these words fueled their hatred.

Jesus: 19 The truth is that the Son does nothing on His own; all these actions are led by the Father. The Son watches the Father closely and then mimics the work of the Father. 20 The Father loves the Son, so He does not hide His actions. Instead, He shows Him everything, and the things not yet revealed by the Father will dumbfound you. 21 The Father can give life to those who are dead; in the same way, the Son can give the gift of life to those He chooses.

22 The Father does not exert His power to judge anyone. Instead, He has given the authority as Judge to the Son. 23 So all of creation will honor and worship the Son as they do the Father. If you do not honor the Son, then you dishonor the Father who sent Him.

24 I tell you the truth: eternal life belongs to those who hear My voice and believe in the One who sent Me. These people have no reason to fear judgment because they have already left death and entered life.

25 I tell you the truth: a new day is imminent—in fact, it has arrived—when the voice of the Son of God will penetrate death’s domain, and everyone who hears will live. 26-27 You see, the Father radiates with life; and He also animates the Son of God with the same life-giving beauty and power to exercise judgment over all of creation. Indeed, the Son of God is also the Son of Man. 28 If this sounds amazing to you, what is even more amazing is that when the time comes, those buried long ago will hear His voice through all the rocks, sod, and soil 29 and step out of decay into resurrection. When this hour arrives, those who did good will be resurrected to life, and those who did evil will be resurrected to judgment.

30 I have not ever acted, and will not in the future act, on My own. I listen to the directions of the One who sent Me and act on these divine instructions. For this reason, My judgment is always fair and never self-serving. I’m committed to pursuing God’s agenda and not My own.

31 If I stand as the lone witness to My true identity, then I can be dismissed as a liar. 32 But if you listen, you will hear another testify about Me, and I know what He says about Me is genuine and true. 33 You sent messengers to John, and he told the truth to everyone who would listen. 34 Still his message about Me originated in heaven, not in mortal man. I am telling you these things for one reason—so that you might be rescued. 35 The voice of John the Baptist, the wandering prophet, is like a light in the darkness; and for a time, you took great joy and pleasure in the light he offered.

36 There’s another witness standing in My corner who is greater than John or any other man. The mission that brings Me here, and the things I am called to do, demonstrate the authenticity of My calling which comes directly from the Father. 37 In the act of sending Me, the Father has endorsed Me. None of you really knows the Father. You have never heard His voice or seen His profile. 38 His word does not abide in you because you do not believe in the One sent by the Father.

39 Here you are scouring through the Scriptures, hoping that you will find eternal life among a pile of scrolls. What you don’t seem to understand is that the Scriptures point to Me. 40 Here I am with you, and still you reject the truth contained in the law and prophets by refusing to come to Me so that you can have life.

Jesus is the source of life, the animating energy of creation that humanity desperately lacks.

41 This kind of glory does not come from mortal men. 42 And I see that you do not possess the love of God. 43 I have pursued you, coming here in My Father’s name, and you have turned Me away. If someone else were to approach you with a different set of credentials, you would welcome him. 44 That’s why it is hard to see how true faith is even possible for you: you are consumed by the approval of other men, longing to look good in their eyes; and yet you disregard the approval of the one true God. 45 Don’t worry that I might bring you up on charges before My Father. Moses is your accuser even though you’ve put your hope in him 46 because if you believed what Moses had to say, then you would believe in Me because he wrote about Me. 47 But if you ignore Moses and the deeper meaning of his writings, then how will you ever believe what I have to say?

The Healing at the Pool

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)

After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 I receive not honour from men.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Der Kranke am Teich Betesda

Bald darauf wurde eines der jüdischen Feste gefeiert, und auch Jesus ging dazu nach Jerusalem. In der Stadt befindet sich nicht weit vom Schaftor entfernt der Teich Betesda, wie er auf Hebräisch genannt wird. Er ist von fünf Säulenhallen umgeben. Viele Kranke lagen in diesen Hallen – Blinde, Gelähmte und Verkrüppelte[a].

Einer von den Menschen, die dort lagen, war schon seit 38 Jahren krank. Als Jesus ihn sah und erfuhr, dass er schon so lange an seiner Krankheit litt, fragte er ihn: »Willst du gesund werden?« »Ach, Herr«, entgegnete der Kranke, »ich habe niemanden, der mir in den Teich hilft, wenn sich das Wasser bewegt. Versuche ich es aber allein, ist immer ein anderer schneller als ich.« Da forderte ihn Jesus auf: »Steh auf, nimm deine Matte und geh!« Im selben Augenblick war der Mann geheilt. Er rollte seine Matte zusammen und ging seines Weges.

Das geschah an einem Sabbat. 10 Einige führende Juden, die den Geheilten sahen, hielten ihm vor: »Heute ist doch Sabbat! Da darf man keine Matte tragen!« 11 »Aber der Mann, der mich heilte, hat es mir ausdrücklich befohlen«, antwortete er ihnen. 12 »Wer war das? Wer hat dir so etwas befohlen?«, fragten sie nun. 13 Doch das wusste der Mann nicht, denn Jesus hatte den Teich wegen der großen Menschenmenge bereits wieder unbemerkt verlassen.

14 Später traf Jesus den Geheilten im Tempel und sagte zu ihm: »Du bist jetzt endlich gesund. Sündige nicht mehr, damit du nicht etwas Schlimmeres als deine Krankheit erlebst!« 15 Da ging der Mann zu den führenden Juden und berichtete, dass es Jesus war, der ihn gesund gemacht hatte.

16 Von da an lauerten sie Jesus auf, weil er sogar am Sabbat Kranke heilte. 17 Aber Jesus sagte ihnen: »Zu jeder Zeit ist mein Vater am Wirken, und ich folge nur seinem Beispiel.« 18 Nach dieser Antwort waren sie erst recht entschlossen, ihn umzubringen. Denn Jesus hatte nicht nur ihre Sabbatvorschriften missachtet, sondern sogar Gott seinen Vater genannt und sich dadurch Gott gleichgestellt.

Woher nimmt Jesus das Recht für sein Handeln?

19 Auf diese Anschuldigungen der führenden Juden entgegnete Jesus: »Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Von sich aus kann der Sohn gar nichts tun, sondern er tut nur das, was er den Vater tun sieht. Was immer aber der Vater tut, das tut auch der Sohn! 20 Denn weil der Vater den Sohn liebt, zeigt er ihm alles, was er selbst tut. Der Sohn wird noch viel größere Wunder tun, weil der Vater sie ihm zeigt. Ihr werdet staunen! 21 So wie der Vater Tote auferweckt und ihnen neues Leben gibt, so hat auch der Sohn die Macht dazu, neues Leben zu geben, wem er will. 22 Denn nicht der Vater spricht das Urteil über die Menschen, er hat das Richteramt vielmehr dem Sohn übertragen, 23 damit alle den Sohn ehren, genauso wie den Vater. Wer aber den Sohn nicht anerkennen will, der verachtet auch die Herrschaft des Vaters, der ja den Sohn gesandt hat.

24 Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Wer meine Botschaft hört und dem glaubt, der mich gesandt hat, der hat das ewige Leben. Ihn wird das Urteil Gottes nicht treffen, er hat die Grenze vom Tod zum Leben schon überschritten.

25 Ich versichere euch: Die Zeit wird kommen, ja, sie hat schon begonnen, in der die Toten die Stimme von Gottes Sohn hören werden. Und wer diesen Ruf hört, der wird leben. 26 Denn in meinem Vater ist das Leben, und nach seinem Willen hat auch der Sohn dieses Leben in sich. 27 Er hat ihm die Macht gegeben, die ganze Menschheit zu richten, weil er der Menschensohn ist.

28 Wundert euch nicht darüber! Der Tag wird kommen, an dem die Toten in ihren Gräbern die Stimme von Gottes Sohn hören werden. 29 Dann werden alle Menschen ihre Gräber verlassen: Die Gutes getan haben, werden auferstehen, um ewig zu leben, die aber Böses getan haben, um verurteilt zu werden.

30 Dabei kann ich nicht eigenmächtig handeln, sondern ich entscheide so, wie Gott es mir sagt. Deswegen ist mein Urteil auch gerecht. Denn mir geht es nicht darum, meinen eigenen Willen zu tun, sondern ich erfülle den Willen Gottes, der mich gesandt hat.«

Glaubwürdige Zeugen für den Sohn Gottes

31 »Wenn ich mein eigener Zeuge wäre, dann wären meine Worte nicht glaubwürdig. 32 Aber es gibt einen anderen Zeugen, der für mich spricht. Und ich weiß, dass es wahr ist, was er über mich sagt.

33 Ihr habt zwar eure Leute zu Johannes dem Täufer geschickt, um die Wahrheit über mich zu hören, und er hat sie euch bezeugt. 34 Doch ich brauche keine Aussage von Menschen. Nur um euretwillen nenne ich Johannes als Zeugen, weil ich will, dass ihr gerettet werdet. 35 Johannes war ein strahlendes Licht, ihr aber habt euch damit zufriedengegeben, euch eine Zeit lang daran zu freuen.

36 Doch ich habe noch wichtigere Zeugen als Johannes: die Taten nämlich, die ich im Auftrag meines Vaters vollbringe. Sie bestätigen, dass der Vater mich gesandt hat. 37 Gott selbst, der mich gesandt hat, ist ebenfalls mein Zeuge. Aber ihr habt noch niemals seine Stimme gehört, habt ihn nie von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen[b]. 38 Ihr gebt seinem Wort keinen Raum in eurem Leben; sonst würdet ihr dem glauben, den Gott zu euch gesandt hat. 39 Ihr durchforscht die Heilige Schrift, weil ihr meint, in ihr das ewige Leben zu finden. Und tatsächlich weist gerade sie auf mich hin. 40 Dennoch wollt ihr nicht zu mir kommen, um dieses Leben zu haben.

41 Ich suche nicht die Anerkennung von Menschen! 42 Ihr dagegen seid anders. Ich kenne euch und weiß genau, dass ihr keine Liebe zu Gott in euch tragt. 43 Mein Vater hat mich zu euch geschickt, doch ihr lehnt mich ab. Wenn aber jemand in eigenem Auftrag zu euch kommt, den werdet ihr aufnehmen.

44 Kein Wunder, dass ihr nicht glauben könnt! Denn ihr seid doch nur darauf aus, voreinander etwas zu gelten. Aber euch ist völlig gleichgültig, ob ihr vor dem einzigen Gott bestehen könnt.

45 Es wird gar nicht nötig sein, dass ich euch vor dem Vater anklage: Mose ist euer Ankläger – genau der, auf den ihr eure ganze Hoffnung setzt! 46 Denn in Wirklichkeit glaubt ihr Mose gar nicht; sonst würdet ihr auch mir glauben. Schließlich hat doch Mose von mir geschrieben. 47 Wenn ihr aber nicht einmal glaubt, was er geschrieben hat, wie könnt ihr dann glauben, was ich euch sage?«
