耶穌被捕
18 耶穌說了這些話，就與他的門徒們一起出去，過了汲淪溪谷。在那裡有一個園子，耶穌和他的門徒們進去了。 2 出賣耶穌的猶大也知道那地方，因為耶穌經常在那裡與他的門徒們一同聚集。 3 於是猶大領著一隊士兵，還有祭司長們和法利賽人的差役們，帶著燈籠、火把、兵器來到那裡。
4 耶穌知道就要臨到自己的一切，於是上前對他們說：「你們找誰？」
5 他們回答：「拿撒勒人耶穌。」
耶穌說：「我就是。」
出賣他的猶大也與他們站在一起。 6 耶穌一說「我就是」，他們就往後退，倒在地上。
7 於是耶穌又問：「你們找誰？」
他們說：「拿撒勒人耶穌。」
8 耶穌回答：「我已經告訴你們『我就是』。因此，你們如果找我，就讓這些人走吧！」 9 這是為要應驗耶穌說過的話：「你所賜給我的人，我一個也沒有丟失。」
10 西門彼得帶著一把刀。他拔出刀來，向大祭司的奴僕砍去，削掉了他的右耳。那奴僕的名字是馬勒古。
11 耶穌就對彼得說：「把刀收回鞘裡！父所賜給我的杯，我難道能不喝嗎？」
耶穌被帶到亞納面前
12 於是那隊士兵和千夫長，以及猶太人的差役們，抓住耶穌，把他捆綁起來， 13 先帶到[a]亞納面前，因為亞納是當年的大祭司該亞法的岳父。 14 該亞法就是曾經向那些猶太人建議「一個人替民眾死[b]是有益處的」那個人。
彼得不認主
15 這時，西門彼得和另一個門徒跟著耶穌。那門徒是大祭司所認識的，所以跟著耶穌進了大祭司的院子； 16 彼得卻站在門外。後來，大祭司認識的那個門徒出來，對看門的說了一聲，就把彼得帶了進去。
17 那看門的女僕問彼得：「你不也是這個人的門徒嗎？」
彼得說：「我不是。」 18 因為當時天氣寒冷，奴僕和差役們生了一堆炭火，站著取暖。彼得也與他們站在一起取暖。
在亞納面前受審
19 那時，大祭司盤問耶穌有關他的門徒和他教導的事。
20 耶穌回答他：「我一向公開地對世人講話。我總是在會堂和聖殿，就是所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人。我沒有在隱祕中講過什麼。 21 你為什麼問我呢？你可以去問那些聽見過的人，我對他們講了什麼。你看，我所說的，那些人都知道。」
22 耶穌說了這些話，站在旁邊的一個差役就打了他一巴掌，說：「你這樣回答大祭司嗎？」
23 耶穌回答他：「如果我說得不對，你可以見證哪裡不對；如果說得對，你為什麼打我呢？」
24 那時候耶穌仍然被捆綁，亞納把他押送到大祭司該亞法那裡去。
彼得再次不認主
25 西門彼得正站著取暖，有人對他說：「你不也是他的門徒嗎？」
彼得否認說：「我不是。」
26 大祭司的一個奴僕，就是被彼得削掉耳朵的那個人的親戚，說：「我不是看見你與他一起在園子裡嗎？」
27 彼得再次否認。立時，雞就叫了。
在彼拉多面前受審
28 他們把耶穌從該亞法那裡帶到總督府，那時是清晨。他們為了不被汙穢，能吃逾越節的晚餐，就沒有進入總督府。
29 於是彼拉多出來，到他們那裡，說：「你們提出什麼來控告這個人？」
30 他們回答說：「這個人如果不是作惡的，我們就不會把他交給你了。」
31 彼拉多對他們說：「你們自己把他帶走，按照你們的律法審判他吧。」
那些猶太人回答說：「我們不可以處死人。」 32 這是為要應驗耶穌說過的話，就是他指明自己將要怎樣死的那些話。
33 彼拉多又進了總督府，把耶穌叫來，問他：「你是猶太人的王嗎？」
34 耶穌回答：「這話是你自己說的，還是別人告訴過你關於我的事呢？」
35 彼拉多說：「難道我是猶太人嗎？是你本國的人和祭司長們把你交給了我。你到底做了什麼？」
36 耶穌回答：「我的國不屬於這個世界。如果我的國屬於這個世界，我的僕人們早就會爭戰，不讓我被交給那些猶太人。但如今，我的國不在這裡。」
37 於是彼拉多問：「那麼，你就是王？」
耶穌回答：「是你說的，我就是王。我為此而生，也為此而來到這世界，是要為真理做見證。凡是屬於真理的人，都聽我的聲音。」
38 彼拉多說：「什麼是真理？」
耶穌或巴拉巴
說了這話，他又出去對猶太人說：「我查不出他有什麼罪。 39 不過你們有一個慣例：每逢逾越節，我可以給你們釋放一個囚犯。那麼，你們願意我給你們釋放這猶太人的王嗎？」
40 他們就再次大聲喊叫說：「不要這個人！要巴拉巴！」這巴拉巴其實是個強盜。

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
18 When[a] Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered. 2 (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, also knew about the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples.) 3 So Judas, taking the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, because he[b] knew all the things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?” 5 They replied to him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am he.”[c] (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing with them.) 6 So when he said to them, “I am he,”[d] they drew back[e] and fell to the ground. 7 Then he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8 Jesus replied, “I said to you that I am he![f] So if you are looking for me, let these men go,” 9 in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: “Those whom you have given to me—I have not lost anyone of them.”[g]
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. (Now the name of the slave was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into its[h] sheath! The cup that the Father has given me—shall I not drink it?”
Jesus Taken to Annas
12 Then the cohort and the military tribune and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and tied him up, 13 and brought him[i] to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 (Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was better that one man die for the people.)
Peter Denies Jesus the First Time
15 So Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. (Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.) 16 But Peter was standing by the door outside. So the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 17 Then the female slave who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You are not also one of the disciples of this man, are you?”[j] He said, “I am not!” 18 (Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing there with them and warming himself.)
Jesus Before Annas
19 So the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20 Jesus replied to him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple courts[k] where all the Jews assemble, and I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why are you asking me? Ask those who heard what I have said to them! Behold, these people know what I said.” 22 Now when[l] he had said these things, one of the officers who was standing by gave a slap in the face to Jesus, saying, “Do you reply to the high priest in this way?” 23 Jesus replied to him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify about what is wrong! But if I have spoken[m] correctly, why do you strike me?” 24 Then Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Jesus the Second and Third Times
25 Now Simon Peter was standing there and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?”[n] He denied it[o] and said, “I am not!” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 So Peter denied it[p] again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus Brought Before Pilate
28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s residence. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the governor’s residence so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you!” 31 So Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him according to your law!” The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted for us to kill anyone,” 32 in order that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled that he had spoken, indicating by what sort of death he was going to die.
Pilate Questions Jesus
33 Then Pilate entered again into the governor’s residence and summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 Jesus replied, “Do you say this from yourself, or have others said this[q] to you about me?” 35 Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I?[r] Your people and the chief priests handed you over to me! What have you done?” 36 Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So then you are a king!” Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I have come into the world: in order that I can testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
And when he[s] had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no basis for an accusation against him. 39 But it is your custom that I release for you one prisoner[t] at the Passover. So do you want me[u] to release for you the king of the Jews?” 40 Then they shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)[v]

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)
