耶穌聽見拉撒路病了
11 有一個患病的人名叫拉撒路，住在伯大尼，就是馬利亞和她姐姐馬大的村莊。 2 這馬利亞就是那用香膏抹主，又用頭髮擦他腳的，患病的拉撒路是她的兄弟。 3 她姐妹兩個就打發人去見耶穌，說：「主啊，你所愛的人病了。」 4 耶穌聽見就說：「這病不至於死，乃是為神的榮耀，叫神的兒子因此得榮耀。」 5 耶穌素來愛馬大和她妹子並拉撒路。 6 聽見拉撒路病了，就在所居之地仍住了兩天。 7 然後對門徒說：「我們再往猶太去吧。」 8 門徒說：「拉比，猶太人近來要拿石頭打你，你還往那裡去嗎？」 9 耶穌回答說：「白日不是有十二小時嗎？人在白日走路，就不致跌倒，因為看見這世上的光。 10 若在黑夜走路，就必跌倒，因為他沒有光。」 11 耶穌說了這話，隨後對他們說：「我們的朋友拉撒路睡了，我去叫醒他。」 12 門徒說：「主啊，他若睡了，就必好了。」 13 耶穌這話是指著他死說的，他們卻以為是說照常睡了。 14 耶穌就明明地告訴他們說：「拉撒路死了。 15 我沒有在那裡就歡喜，這是為你們的緣故，好叫你們相信。如今我們可以往他那裡去吧！」 16 多馬，又稱為低土馬，就對那同做門徒的說：「我們也去和他同死吧！」
復活在主

耶穌哭了
33 耶穌看見她哭，並看見與她同來的猶太人也哭，就心裡悲嘆，又甚憂愁， 34 便說：「你們把他安放在哪裡？」他們回答說：「請主來看。」 35 耶穌哭了。 36 猶太人就說：「你看，他愛這人是何等懇切！」 37 其中有人說：「他既然開了瞎子的眼睛，豈不能叫這人不死嗎？」 38 耶穌又心裡悲嘆，來到墳墓前。那墳墓是個洞，有一塊石頭擋著。 39 耶穌說：「你們把石頭挪開！」那死人的姐姐馬大對他說：「主啊，他現在必是臭了，因為他死了已經四天了。」 40 耶穌說：「我不是對你說過，你若信，就必看見神的榮耀嗎？」
主叫拉撒路復活
41 他們就把石頭挪開。耶穌舉目望天，說：「父啊，我感謝你，因為你已經聽我。 42 我也知道你常聽我，但我說這話是為周圍站著的眾人，叫他們信是你差了我來。」 43 說了這話，就大聲呼叫說：「拉撒路出來！」 44 那死人就出來了，手腳裹著布，臉上包著手巾。耶穌對他們說：「解開，叫他走！」
45 那些來看馬利亞的猶太人見了耶穌所做的事，就多有信他的。 46 但其中也有去見法利賽人的，將耶穌所做的事告訴他們。
法利賽人用計要害死耶穌
47 祭司長和法利賽人聚集公會，說：「這人行好些神蹟，我們怎麼辦呢？ 48 若這樣由著他，人人都要信他，羅馬人也要來奪我們的地土和我們的百姓。」 49 內中有一個人名叫該亞法，本年做大祭司，對他們說：「你們不知道什麼。 50 獨不想一個人替百姓死，免得通國滅亡，就是你們的益處。」 51 他這話不是出於自己，是因他本年做大祭司，所以預言耶穌將要替這一國死； 52 也不但替這一國死，並要將神四散的子民都聚集歸一。 53 從那日起，他們就商議要殺耶穌。
54 所以耶穌不再顯然行在猶太人中間，就離開那裡往靠近曠野的地方去，到了一座城，名叫以法蓮，就在那裡和門徒同住。 55 猶太人的逾越節近了，有許多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷去，要在節前潔淨自己。 56 他們就尋找耶穌，站在殿裡彼此說：「你們的意思如何，他不來過節嗎？」 57 那時，祭司長和法利賽人早已吩咐說，若有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要報明，好去拿他。

11 And there was a sick man [Forsooth there was some sick man], Lazarus of Bethany, of the castle of Mary and Martha, his sisters.
2 And it was Mary, which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hairs, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3 Therefore his sisters sent to him, and said [saying], Lord, lo! he whom thou lovest, is sick.
4 And Jesus heard, and said to them, This sickness is not to the death, but for the glory of God, that man's Son be glorified by him [that God's Son be glorified by it].
5 And Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
6 Therefore when Jesus heard, that he was sick, then he dwelled in the same place two days.
7 And after these things he said to his disciples, Go we again into Judaea.
8 The disciples say to him, Master [Rabbi, or Master], now the Jews sought to stone thee, and again goest thou thither?
9 Jesus answered, Whether there be not twelve hours of the day? If any man wander in the day, he hurteth not, for he seeth the light of this world. [Jesus answered, Whether there be not twelve hours in the day? Whosoever walketh in the day, he hurteth not, for he seeth the light of this world.]
10 But if he wander in the night, he stumbleth, for light is not in him.
11 He said these things [These things he saith], and after these things he saith to them, Lazarus, our friend, sleepeth, but I go to raise him from sleep.
12 Therefore his disciples said, Lord, if he sleepeth, he shall be safe. [Therefore his disciples said, Lord, if he sleep, he shall be safe.]
13 But Jesus had said of his death; but they guessed, that he said of [the] sleeping of sleep.
14 Then therefore Jesus said to them openly, Lazarus is dead;
15 and I have joy for you, that ye believe, for I was not there; but go we to him.
16 Therefore Thomas, that is said Didymus, said to even-disciples, Go we also, that we die with him.
17 And so Jesus came, and found him having then four days in the grave. [And so Jesus came, and found him having now four days in the grave.]
18 And Bethany was beside Jerusalem, as it were fifteen furlongs.
19 And many of the Jews came to Mary and Martha, to comfort them of their brother.
20 Therefore as Martha heard, that Jesus came, she ran to him; but Mary sat at home.
21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead.
22 But now I know, that whatever things thou shalt ask of God, God shall give to thee.
23 Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith to him, I know, that he shall rise again in the again-rising in the last day.
25 Jesus saith to her, I am again-rising and life; he that believeth in me, yea, though he be dead, he shall live;
26 and each that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die without end[a]. Believest thou this thing?
27 She saith to him, Yea, Lord, I have believed, that thou art Christ, the Son of the living God, that hast come into this world.
28 And when she had said this thing, she went, and called Mary, her sister, in silence, and said [she went, and called Mary, her sister, in silence, or stillness, saying], The master is come, and calleth thee.
29 She, as she heard, arose at once [rose anon], and came to him.
30 And Jesus came not yet into the castle, but he was yet in that place, where Martha had come to meet him.
31 Therefore the Jews that were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose swiftly, and went out, they followed her, and said [when they saw Mary, for soon she rose, and went out, followed her, saying], For she goeth to the grave, to weep there.
32 But when Mary was come where Jesus was, she seeing him felled down to his feet [seeing him fell down to this feet], and said to him, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead.
33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping that were with her, he made noise in spirit, and troubled himself,
34 and said, Where have ye laid him? They said to him, Lord, come, and see.
35 And Jesus wept.
36 Therefore the Jews said, Lo! how he loved him.
37 And some of them said, Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind man [Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind], might not make that this should not die?
38 Therefore Jesus again making noise in himself, came to the grave. And there was a den, and a stone was laid thereon.
39 And Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, he stinketh now, for he hath lain four days.[b]
40 Jesus saith to her, Have I not said to thee, that if thou believest [for if thou shalt believe], thou shalt see the glory of God?
41 Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I do thankings to thee, for thou hast heard me;
42 and I knew, that thou evermore hearest me [forsooth, I knew, for thou ever hearest me], but for the people that standeth about, I said, that they believe, that thou hast sent me.
43 When he had said these things, he cried with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And at once he that was dead, came out, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face bound with a sudarium. And Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him to go forth. [And anon, he that was dead, came forth, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face was bound with a sudarium, or sweating cloth. Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him for to go away.]
45 Therefore many of the Jews that came to Mary and Martha, and saw what things Jesus did, believed in him.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees, and said to them, what things Jesus had done.
47 Therefore the bishops and the Pharisees gathered a council against Jesus, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles [for this man doeth many signs, or miracles].
48 If we leave him thus, all men shall believe in him; and Romans shall come, and shall take our place and our folk [and Romans shall come, and take our place and folk].
49 But one of them, Caiaphas by name, when he was bishop of that year, said to them, Ye know nothing,
50 nor think, that it speedeth to you, that one man die for the people, and that all the folk perish not.
51 But [Forsooth] he said not this thing of himself, but when he was bishop of that year, he prophesied, that Jesus was to die for the folk,
52 and not only for the folk, but that he should gather into one the sons of God that were scattered.
53 Therefore from that day they thought for to slay him.
54 Therefore Jesus walked not then openly among the Jews [Therefore Jesus walked not now openly at the Jews]; but he went into a country beside [the] desert, into a city, that is said Ephraim, and there he dwelled with his disciples [and there he dwelt with his disciples].
55 And the pask of the Jews was nigh, and many of the country went up to Jerusalem before the pask, to hallow themselves.
56 Therefore they sought Jesus, and spake together, standing in the temple, What guess ye, for he cometh not to the feast day?
57 For the bishops and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man know where he is, that he show [that if any man knew where he is, he show], that they take him.

Lazarus Is Dead
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Miriam and her sister Martha. 2 This was the same Miriam who anointed the Master with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3 So the sisters sent a word to Yeshua, saying, “Master, the one you love is sick!”
4 When Yeshua heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. It is for God’s glory, so that Ben-Elohim may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Yeshua loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 However, when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two more days.
7 Then after this, He said to His disciples, “Let’s go up to Judea again.”
8 “Rabbi,” the disciples say to Him, “just now the Judean leaders were trying to stone You! And You’re going back there again?”
9 Yeshua answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours in the day? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of the world. 10 But if a man should walk around at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11 After He said this, He tells them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m going there to wake him up.”
12 So the disciples said to Him, “Master, if he has fallen asleep, he will get better.” 13 Now Yeshua had spoken about his death, but they thought He was talking about ordinary sleep.
14 Then Yeshua told them clearly, “Lazarus is dead! 15 I’m glad for your sake I wasn’t there, so that you may believe. Anyway, let’s go to him!”
16 Then Thomas called the Twin[a] said to the other disciples, “Let’s go too, so that we may die with Him!”
Comforting the Mourners
17 So when Yeshua arrived, He discovered that Lazarus had been in the tomb already for four days. 18 Bethany was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the Judeans had come to Martha and Miriam to console them about their brother.
20 When Martha heard that Yeshua was coming, she went out to meet Him; but Miriam sat in the house. 21 Martha said to Yeshua, “Master, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died! 22 But I know, even now, that whatever You may ask of God, He will give You.”
23 Yeshua said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha said to Him, “I know, he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
25 Yeshua said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life! Whoever believes in Me, even if he dies, shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She says to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, Ben-Elohim who has come into the world.” 28 After she said this, she left and secretly told her sister Miriam, “The Teacher is here, and He’s calling for you.” 29 As soon as Miriam heard, she quickly got up and was coming to Him. 30 Now Yeshua had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. 31 The Judeans, who were with Miriam in the house and comforting her, seeing how quickly she got up and went out, followed her. They thought she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 So when Miriam came to where Yeshua was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Master, if You had been here, my brother would not have died!”
33 When Yeshua saw her weeping, and the Judeans who came with her weeping, He was deeply troubled in spirit and Himself agitated. 34 “Where have you laid him?” He asked.
“Come and see, Master,” they tell Him.
35 Yeshua wept. 36 So the Judeans said, “See how He loved him!”
37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t this One, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have also kept this man from dying?”
Yeshua’s Word Raises the Dead
38 So Yeshua, again deeply troubled within Himself, comes to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Yeshua says, “Roll away the stone!”
Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to Him, “Master, by this time he stinks! He’s been dead for four days!”
40 Yeshua says to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
41 So they rolled away the stone. Yeshua lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard Me. 42 I knew that You always hear Me; but because of this crowd standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”
43 And when He had said this, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 He who had been dead came out, wrapped in burial clothes binding his hands and feet, with a cloth over his face. And Yeshua tells them, “Cut him loose, and let him go!”
Better that One Man Die
45 Therefore many of the Judeans, who had come to Miriam and had seen what Yeshua had done, put their trust in Him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Yeshua had done.
47 So the ruling kohanim and Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we doing?” they asked. “This Man is performing many signs! 48 If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our holy place and our nation.”
49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was kohen gadol that year, said to them, “You know nothing! 50 You don’t take into account that it is better for you that one man die for the people rather than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
51 Now he did not say this by himself; but as the kohen gadol that year, he prophesied that Yeshua would die for the nation. [c] 52 And not for the nation only, but also so that He might gather together into one the scattered children of God.[d]
53 So from that day on, they plotted to kill Him. 54 Therefore Yeshua no longer walked openly among the Judeans, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with His disciples.
55 Now the Jewish Passover was near; and many people went up out of the regions to Jerusalem before Passover, to purify themselves. 56 So they were searching for Yeshua, saying to one another as they stood in the Temple, “What do you think? Won’t He come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the ruling kohanim and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it so that they might arrest Him.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
