拉撒路病死
11 伯大尼村有個名叫拉撒路的人病倒了。伯大尼是瑪麗亞和她姐姐瑪大居住的村莊。 2 就是這個瑪麗亞後來用香膏抹主，又用自己的頭髮擦乾祂的腳，患病的拉撒路是她的弟弟。 3 她們姊妹兩個託人去告訴耶穌，說：「主啊，你所愛的人病了！」
4 耶穌聽見後，說：「這病不會致命，而是為了上帝的榮耀，使祂的兒子藉此得到榮耀。」 5 耶穌一向愛瑪大、瑪麗亞和拉撒路， 6 可是祂聽到拉撒路有病的消息後，仍逗留了兩天， 7 然後才對門徒說：「我們去猶太吧！」
8 門徒說：「老師，猶太人近來想拿石頭打你，你還要去那裡嗎？」
9 耶穌說：「白天不是有十二個小時嗎？人在白天走路，不會跌倒，因為他看得見這世上的光。 10 人在夜間走路，才會跌倒，因為沒有光。」 11 接著耶穌又說：「我們的朋友拉撒路已經睡了，我去叫醒他。」
12 門徒說：「主啊，如果他睡了，肯定會好的。」 13 其實耶穌是指他已經死了，門徒卻以為他真的睡了。
14 於是，耶穌清楚地對他們說：「拉撒路死了。 15 為了你們的緣故，我很高興自己不在那裡，好叫你們信我。現在我們可以去了。」 16 綽號「雙胞胎」的多馬對其他門徒說：「我們也去，好跟祂一塊兒死吧。」
拉撒路死而復活
17 耶穌到了伯大尼，得知拉撒路已經在墳墓裡四天了。 18 伯大尼離耶路撒冷不遠，大約只有三公里的路， 19 很多猶太人來看瑪大和瑪麗亞，為她們兄弟的事來安慰她們。
20 瑪大聽說耶穌來了，就去迎接祂，瑪麗亞卻仍然坐在家裡。 21 瑪大對耶穌說：「主啊，你如果早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。 22 就是現在我也知道你無論向上帝求什麼，上帝必定賜給你。」
23 耶穌說：「你弟弟必定復活。」
24 瑪大說：「我知道，在末日復活的時候，他必復活。」
25 耶穌說：「我是復活，我是生命。信我的人雖然死了，也必復活。 26 凡活著信我的人必永遠不死。你相信嗎？」
27 瑪大說：「主啊，我信！我相信你是來到世界的基督，是上帝的兒子。」
28 瑪大說完了，就回去悄悄地告訴她妹妹瑪麗亞：「老師來了，祂叫你去。」
29 瑪麗亞聽了，急忙起來到耶穌那裡。 30 那時，耶穌還沒有進村子，仍在瑪大迎接祂的地方。 31 那些在家裡安慰瑪麗亞的猶太人，見她匆匆忙忙地跑了出去，以為她要去墳墓那裡哭，就跟著出去。
32 瑪麗亞來到耶穌那裡，俯伏在祂腳前說：「主啊，你如果早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。」
33 耶穌看見她和陪她來的猶太人都在哭，心中感動，十分難過， 34 便問：「你們把他葬在哪裡了？」
他們答道：「主啊，你來看。」
35 耶穌哭了。
36 猶太人說：「你看！祂多麼愛拉撒路啊！」
37 其中也有人說：「祂既然能醫好瞎眼的人，難道不能叫這個人不死嗎？」
38 耶穌又十分感動地來到墳墓前。那墳墓是個洞，洞口堵著一塊大石頭。
39 耶穌說：「把石頭挪開。」
死者的姐姐瑪大對祂說：「主啊，他死了四天了，已經臭了。」
40 耶穌說：「我不是跟你說過，只要你信，就會看見上帝的榮耀嗎？」
41 於是，他們把石頭挪開，耶穌望著天說：「父啊，我感謝你，因為你已垂聽了我的禱告， 42 我知道你常常垂聽我的禱告。我這樣說是為了周圍站著的眾人，好叫他們相信是你差了我來。」
43 說完，就大聲呼喊：「拉撒路，出來！」 44 那死者就出來了，手腳都纏著布條，臉上也包著布。
耶穌對他們說：「給他解開，讓他走！」
謀害耶穌
45 許多來看瑪麗亞的猶太人看見耶穌所行的事，就信了祂， 46 但也有些人去見法利賽人，把耶穌所行的事告訴他們。 47 祭司長和法利賽人便召開公會會議，說：「這人行了這麼多神蹟，我們該怎麼辦呢？ 48 如果讓祂這樣繼續下去，所有的人都會信祂，那時羅馬人一定會來奪取我們的土地，擄掠我們的人民。」
49 當年擔任大祭司的該亞法對他們說：「你們什麼都不懂！ 50 你們沒有認識到，祂一個人替眾人死，而不是整個民族滅亡，對你們來說更好。」 51 其實這句話不是出於他自己，只因那年他是大祭司，上帝藉著他預言耶穌將要替猶太民族死。 52 祂不單是要替猶太民族死，也要把散居在各處的上帝的兒女聚集在一起。
53 從那天起，他們就計劃要殺害耶穌， 54 所以耶穌不再公開地在猶太人中間露面。祂離開伯大尼，前往靠近曠野的地方，到了以法蓮城，就和門徒住下來。
55 猶太人的逾越節快到了，有很多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷，預備在過節前潔淨自己。 56 他們四處尋找耶穌，又彼此在聖殿裡談論：「你們怎麼想？祂不會來過節吧？」 57 當時祭司長和法利賽人早已下令，如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就來報告，他們好去抓祂。

Risurrezione di Lazzaro
11 Era allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betània, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella. 2 Maria era quella che aveva cosparso di olio profumato il Signore e gli aveva asciugato i piedi con i suoi capelli; suo fratello Lazzaro era malato. 3 Le sorelle mandarono dunque a dirgli: «Signore, ecco, il tuo amico è malato».
4 All'udire questo, Gesù disse: «Questa malattia non è per la morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, perché per essa il Figlio di Dio venga glorificato». 5 Gesù voleva molto bene a Marta, a sua sorella e a Lazzaro. 6 Quand'ebbe dunque sentito che era malato, si trattenne due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava. 7 Poi, disse ai discepoli: «Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea!». 8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ci vai di nuovo?». 9 Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo; 10 ma se invece uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché gli manca la luce». 11 Così parlò e poi soggiunse loro: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro s'è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo». 12 Gli dissero allora i discepoli: «Signore, se s'è addormentato, guarirà». 13 Gesù parlava della morte di lui, essi invece pensarono che si riferisse al riposo del sonno. 14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto 15 e io sono contento per voi di non essere stato là, perché voi crediate. Orsù, andiamo da lui!». 16 Allora Tommaso, chiamato Dìdimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!».
17 Venne dunque Gesù e trovò Lazzaro che era gia da quattro giorni nel sepolcro. 18 Betània distava da Gerusalemme meno di due miglia 19 e molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle per il loro fratello. 20 Marta dunque, come seppe che veniva Gesù, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa. 21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! 22 Ma anche ora so che qualunque cosa chiederai a Dio, egli te la concederà». 23 Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà». 24 Gli rispose Marta: «So che risusciterà nell'ultimo giorno». 25 Gesù le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muore, vivrà; 26 chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?». 27 Gli rispose: «Sì, o Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che deve venire nel mondo».
28 Dopo queste parole se ne andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama». 29 Quella, udito ciò, si alzò in fretta e andò da lui. 30 Gesù non era entrato nel villaggio, ma si trovava ancora là dove Marta gli era andata incontro. 31 Allora i Giudei che erano in casa con lei a consolarla, quando videro Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono pensando: «Va al sepolcro per piangere là». 32 Maria, dunque, quando giunse dov'era Gesù, vistolo si gettò ai suoi piedi dicendo: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!». 33 Gesù allora quando la vide piangere e piangere anche i Giudei che erano venuti con lei, si commosse profondamente, si turbò e disse: 34 «Dove l'avete posto?». Gli dissero: «Signore, vieni a vedere!». 35 Gesù scoppiò in pianto. 36 Dissero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come lo amava!». 37 Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Costui che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco non poteva anche far sì che questi non morisse?».
38 Intanto Gesù, ancora profondamente commosso, si recò al sepolcro; era una grotta e contro vi era posta una pietra. 39 Disse Gesù: «Togliete la pietra!». Gli rispose Marta, la sorella del morto: «Signore, gia manda cattivo odore, poiché è di quattro giorni». 40 Le disse Gesù: «Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?». 41 Tolsero dunque la pietra. Gesù allora alzò gli occhi e disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai ascoltato. 42 Io sapevo che sempre mi dai ascolto, ma l'ho detto per la gente che mi sta attorno, perché credano che tu mi hai mandato». 43 E, detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!». 44 Il morto uscì, con i piedi e le mani avvolti in bende, e il volto coperto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».
I capi Giudei decidono la morte di Gesù
45 Molti dei Giudei che erano venuti da Maria, alla vista di quel che egli aveva compiuto, credettero in lui. 46 Ma alcuni andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quel che Gesù aveva fatto. 47 Allora i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo compie molti segni. 48 Se lo lasciamo fare così, tutti crederanno in lui e verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo santo e la nostra nazione». 49 Ma uno di loro, di nome Caifa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla 50 e non considerate come sia meglio che muoia un solo uomo per il popolo e non perisca la nazione intera». 51 Questo però non lo disse da se stesso, ma essendo sommo sacerdote profetizzò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione 52 e non per la nazione soltanto, ma anche per riunire insieme i figli di Dio che erano dispersi. 53 Da quel giorno dunque decisero di ucciderlo.
54 Gesù pertanto non si faceva più vedere in pubblico tra i Giudei; egli si ritirò di là nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efraim, dove si trattenne con i suoi discepoli.

55 Era vicina la Pasqua dei Giudei e molti dalla regione andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi. 56 Essi cercavano Gesù e stando nel tempio dicevano tra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?». 57 Intanto i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che chiunque sapesse dove si trovava lo denunziasse, perché essi potessero prenderlo.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

11 Now a certain man was ill, Laz′arus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Laz′arus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness is not unto death; it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by means of it.”
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Laz′arus. 6 So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two days longer[a] in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 Thus he spoke, and then he said to them, “Our friend Laz′arus has fallen asleep, but I go to awake him out of sleep.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Laz′arus is dead; 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus the Resurrection and the Life
17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Laz′arus[b] had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[c] off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life;[d] he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world.”
Jesus Weeps
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying quietly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was and saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled; 34 and he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life
38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 I knew that thou hearest me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that thou didst send me.” 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Laz′arus, come out.” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him; 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council, and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on thus, every one will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place[e] and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Ca′iaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all; 50 you do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish.”[f] 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called E′phraim; and there he stayed with the disciples.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if any one knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

- 11.50 Caiaphas agreed that, as Jesus was not (in their opinion) the Messiah, any popular insurrection now could end only in disaster; so it was better, he argued, to do away with him. He was unconscious of the deeper meaning of his words, namely that Jesus must die for the salvation of man.
