5 凡是相信耶穌是基督的，都是由神所生的。凡是愛那生身之父的，也都愛那由父所生的。 2 當我們愛神，並遵行[a]他命令的時候，從這一點就知道我們愛神的兒女了。 3 原來屬神的愛是這樣的，就是我們要遵守他的命令；而他的命令並不是沉重的， 4 因為凡是由神所生的，就勝過世界；而這勝過世界的勝利，就是我們的信仰。 5 勝過世界的到底是誰呢？難道不是那相信耶穌是神兒子的嗎？
從神來的見證
6 藉著水和血而來的那一位，就是耶穌基督，不僅藉著水，也藉著水和血；並且聖靈是做見證的那一位，因為聖靈就是真理。 7 原來，做見證的有三者：[b] 8 聖靈、水和血；而這三者是一致的[c]。 9 我們既然接受人的見證，神的見證就更應該接受[d]了，因為這是神的見證，就是神為他的兒子所做的見證。 10 那信神兒子的，就有這見證在他裡面；那不信神的，就把神當做說謊者，因為他不相信神為自己的兒子所做的見證。 11 這見證就是：神把永恆的生命賜給了我們，並且這生命在他兒子裡面。
12 那有了神兒子的，就有了這生命；那沒有神兒子的，就沒有這生命。 13 我把這些事寫給你們信神兒子之名的人，好讓你們知道：你們有永恆的生命[e]。
有功效的禱告
14 我們對神所懷的確信是這樣的：如果我們按照他的旨意求什麼，他就垂聽我們。 15 如果我們已經知道凡是我們所求的他都垂聽，我們就知道我們已經擁有了向他所求的。
16 如果有人看見自己的弟兄在犯不至於死的罪，就應該為他祈求；這樣，神[f]將把生命賜給他，就是給那些犯不至於死的罪的人。有一種罪是至於死的；關於那種罪我不說要祈求。 17 一切不義都是罪，也有不至於死的罪。
結語
18 我們知道：凡是由神所生的人，就不會繼續犯罪；原來，由神所生的那一位保守著他[g][h]，那惡者也就不碰他。
19 我們知道：我們屬於神，但整個世界都伏在那惡者之下。
20 我們也知道：神的兒子已經來了，並且把領悟的心賜給了我們，使我們能認識真實的那一位[i]。我們在真實的那一位裡面，也就是在他的兒子耶穌基督裡面——這一位就是真神，就是永恆的生命。
21 孩子們哪，你們要保守自己遠離偶像。[j]

勝過世界的人
5 每一個信耶穌是基督的人，都是從上帝生的。凡愛生他之上帝的，也愛上帝所生的。 2 當我們愛上帝，遵行祂的命令時，便知道自己也愛祂的兒女。 3 因為我們遵行上帝的命令就是愛上帝，祂的命令並不難遵守。 4 因為凡是從上帝生的人都能勝過世界，使我們得勝的是我們的信心。 5 誰能勝過世界呢？不就是那些信耶穌是上帝的兒子的人嗎？
上帝的見證
6 耶穌基督是藉著水和血來的。祂不單是藉著水來的，也是藉著水和血來的，並且有聖靈為祂做見證，聖靈就是真理。 7 這樣，做見證的共有三樣： 8 聖靈、水和血。這三者是一致的。 9 我們既然接受人的見證，就更該接受上帝的見證，因為上帝為祂的兒子作了見證。 10 信上帝兒子的人心裡有這見證，不信上帝的人等於把上帝當作撒謊的，因為他不信上帝為祂兒子做的見證。 11 這見證就是：上帝已經把永恆的生命賜給我們，這生命在祂兒子裡面。 12 人有上帝的兒子，就有這生命；沒有上帝的兒子，就沒有這生命。
永恆的生命
13 我把這些事寫給你們這些信上帝兒子之名的人，是要你們知道自己有永生。 14 我們若按著上帝的旨意祈求，祂必垂聽，這是我們對上帝的信心。 15 我們既然知道上帝垂聽我們一切的祈求，就知道我們能得到所求的。
16 若有人看見信徒犯了不至於死的罪，就當為他禱告，上帝必將生命賜給他。有的罪會導致死亡，我並不是說你們要為這樣的罪禱告。 17 一切不義的事都是罪，但有的罪不會導致死亡。
18 我們知道從上帝生的不會繼續犯罪，因為上帝的兒子保護他，那惡者無法害他。 19 我們知道自己屬於上帝，全世界都在那惡者手中。
20 我們知道上帝的兒子已經來了，並且賜給了我們悟性，使我們能認識真神。我們在真神裡面，就是在祂兒子耶穌基督裡面。祂是真神，也是永生。

5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. Whoever loves the Father also loves the child who is born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. 3 For this is loving God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three who testify:[a] 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is God’s testimony which he has testified concerning his Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who doesn’t believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11 The testimony is this: that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
14 This is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. 15 And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I don’t say that he should make a request concerning this. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
18 We know that whoever is born of God doesn’t sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn’t touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 We know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God
5 Everyone who believes(A) that Jesus is the Christ(B) is born of God,(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.(D) 2 This is how we know(E) that we love the children of God:(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.(G) And his commands are not burdensome,(H) 4 for everyone born of God(I) overcomes(J) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(K)
6 This is the one who came by water and blood(L)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.(M) 7 For there are three(N) that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony,(O) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,(P) which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.(Q) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,(R) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,(S) and this life is in his Son.(T) 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.(U)
Concluding Affirmations
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(V) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(W) 14 This is the confidence(X) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(Y) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(Z) that we have what we asked of him.(AA)
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(AB) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(AC) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(AD) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(AE) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(AF)
18 We know that anyone born of God(AG) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(AH) cannot harm them.(AI) 19 We know that we are children of God,(AJ) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(AK) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(AL) and has given us understanding,(AM) so that we may know him who is true.(AN) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(AO)
