The Lord’s Covenant Renewed
24 Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God.
2 Joshua said to the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River,[a] and they worshiped other gods. 3 But I took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac. 4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir, while Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
5 “Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought terrible plagues on Egypt; and afterward I brought you out as a free people. 6 But when your ancestors arrived at the Red Sea,[b] the Egyptians chased after you with chariots and charioteers. 7 When your ancestors cried out to the Lord, I put darkness between you and the Egyptians. I brought the sea crashing down on the Egyptians, drowning them. With your very own eyes you saw what I did. Then you lived in the wilderness for many years.
8 “Finally, I brought you into the land of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I destroyed them before you. I gave you victory over them, and you took possession of their land. 9 Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, started a war against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to curse you, 10 but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak.
11 “When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over them. 12 And I sent terror[c] ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory. 13 I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them.
14 “So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone. 15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
16 The people replied, “We would never abandon the Lord and serve other gods. 17 For the Lord our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us. 18 It was the Lord who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the Lord, for he alone is our God.”
19 Then Joshua warned the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20 If you abandon the Lord and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”
21 But the people answered Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord!”
22 “You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said. “You have chosen to serve the Lord.”
“Yes,” they replied, “we are witnesses to what we have said.”
23 “All right then,” Joshua said, “destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him alone.”
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the decrees and regulations of the Lord. 26 Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the Lord.
27 Joshua said to all the people, “This stone has heard everything the Lord said to us. It will be a witness to testify against you if you go back on your word to God.”
28 Then Joshua sent all the people away to their own homelands.
Leaders Buried in the Promised Land
29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. 30 They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
31 The people of Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him—those who had personally experienced all that the Lord had done for Israel.
32 The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought along with them when they left Egypt, were buried at Shechem, in the plot of land Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor for 100 pieces of silver.[d] This land was located in the territory allotted to the descendants of Joseph.
33 Eleazar son of Aaron also died. He was buried in the hill country of Ephraim, in the town of Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas.

24 ¶ Y juntando Josué todas las tribus de Israel en Siquem, llamó a los ancianos de Israel, a sus príncipes, a sus jueces, y a sus oficiales; y se presentaron delante de Dios.
2 Y dijo Josué a todo el pueblo: Así dice el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: Vuestros padres habitaron antiguamente al otro lado del río, es a saber, Taré, padre de Abraham y de Nacor; y servían a dioses extraños.
3 Y yo tomé a vuestro padre Abraham del otro lado del río, y lo traje por toda la tierra de Canaán, y aumenté su generación, y le di a Isaac.
4 Y a Isaac di a Jacob y a Esaú; y a Esaú di el monte de Seir, para que lo poseyera; mas Jacob y sus hijos descendieron a Egipto.
5 Y yo envié a Moisés y a Aarón, y herí a Egipto, al modo que lo hice en medio de él, y después os saqué.
6 Y saqué a vuestros padres de Egipto; y cuando llegaron al mar, los egipcios siguieron a vuestros padres hasta el mar Bermejo con carros y caballería.
7 Y cuando ellos clamaron al SEÑOR, él puso oscuridad entre vosotros y los egipcios, e hizo venir sobre ellos el mar, el cual los cubrió; y vuestros ojos vieron lo que hice en Egipto. Después estuvisteis muchos días en el desierto.
8 Y os introduje en la tierra de los amorreos, que habitaban al otro lado del Jordán, los cuales pelearon contra vosotros; mas yo los entregué en vuestras manos, y poseisteis su tierra, y los destruí de delante de vosotros.
9 Y se levantó después Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de los moabitas, y peleó contra Israel; y envió a llamar a Balaam hijo de Beor, para que os maldijera.
10 Mas yo no quise escuchar a Balaam, antes os bendijo repetidamente, y os libré de sus manos.
11 Y pasado el Jordán, vinisteis a Jericó; y los señores de Jericó pelearon contra vosotros: los amorreos, ferezeos, cananeos, heteos, gergeseos, heveos, y jebuseos; y yo los entregué en vuestras manos.
12 Y envié avispas delante de vosotros, los cuales los echaron de delante de vosotros, a saber, a los dos reyes de los amorreos; no con tu espada, ni con tu arco.
13 Y os di la tierra por la cual nada trabajasteis, y las ciudades que no edificasteis, en las cuales moráis; y las viñas y olivares que no plantasteis, de las cuales coméis.
14 Ahora pues, temed al SEÑOR, y servidle con perfección y con verdad; y quitad de en medio los dioses a los cuales honraron vuestros padres del otro lado del río, y en Egipto; y servid al SEÑOR.
15 ¶ Y si mal os parece servir al SEÑOR, escogeos hoy a quién sirváis; o a los dioses a quien sirvieron vuestros padres, cuando estuvieron al otro lado del río, o a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra habitáis; que yo y mi casa serviremos al SEÑOR.
16 Entonces el pueblo respondió, y dijo: Nunca tal nos acontezca, que dejemos al SEÑOR por servir a otros dioses.
17 Porque el SEÑOR nuestro Dios es el que nos sacó a nosotros y a nuestros padres de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre; el cual delante de nuestros ojos ha hecho estas grandes señales, y nos ha guardado por todo el camino por donde hemos andado, y en todos los pueblos por entre los cuales pasamos.
18 Y el SEÑOR echó de delante de nosotros a todos los pueblos, y al amorreo que habitaba en la tierra. Por tanto nosotros también serviremos al SEÑOR, porque él es nuestro Dios.
19 Entonces Josué dijo al pueblo: No podréis servir al SEÑOR, porque él es Dios santo, y Dios celoso; no permitirá vuestras rebeliones y vuestros pecados.
20 Si dejaréis al SEÑOR y sirviereis a dioses ajenos, se volverá, y os maltratará, y os consumirá, después que os ha hecho bien.
21 El pueblo entonces dijo a Josué: No, antes al SEÑOR serviremos.
22 Y Josué respondió al pueblo: Vosotros seréis testigos contra vosotros mismos, de que habéis elegido al SEÑOR para servirle. Y ellos respondieron: Testigos seremos.
23 Quitad, pues, ahora los dioses ajenos que están entre vosotros, e inclinad vuestro corazón al SEÑOR Dios de Israel.
24 Y el pueblo respondió a Josué: Al SEÑOR nuestro Dios serviremos, y a su voz oiremos.
25 Entonces Josué hizo pacto con el pueblo el mismo día, y le puso ordenanzas y leyes en Siquem.
26 Y escribió Josué estas palabras en el libro de la ley de Dios; y tomando una gran piedra, la levantó allí debajo de un alcornoque que estaba en el santuario del SEÑOR.
27 Y dijo Josué a todo el pueblo: He aquí esta piedra será entre nosotros por testigo, la cual ha oído todas las palabras del SEÑOR que él ha hablado con nosotros; será, pues, testigo contra vosotros, para que por ventura no mintáis contra vuestro Dios.
28 Y envió Josué al pueblo, cada uno a su heredad.
29 ¶ Y después de estas cosas murió Josué, hijo de Nun, esclavo del SEÑOR siendo de ciento diez años.
30 Y lo enterraron en el término de su posesión en Timnat-sera, que está en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.
31 Y sirvió Israel al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron después de Josué, y que sabían todas las obras del SEÑOR, que había hecho con Israel.
32 Y enterraron en Siquem los huesos de José que los hijos de Israel habían traído de Egipto, en la parte del campo que Jacob compró de los hijos de Hamor padre de Siquem, por cien corderas; y fue en posesión a los hijos de José.
33 También murió Eleazar, hijo de Aarón; al cual enterraron en el collado de Finees su hijo, que le fue dado en el monte de Efraín.

The Covenant Renewed at Shechem
24 Then Joshua assembled(A) all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.(B) He summoned(C) the elders,(D) leaders, judges and officials of Israel,(E) and they presented themselves before God.
2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor,(F) lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.(G) 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan(H) and gave him many descendants.(I) I gave him Isaac,(J) 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.(K) I assigned the hill country of Seir(L) to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.(M)
5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron,(N) and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.(O) 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea,(P) and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen[a](Q) as far as the Red Sea.[b](R) 7 But they cried(S) to the Lord for help, and he put darkness(T) between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them.(U) You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians.(V) Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.(W)
8 “‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites(X) who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.(Y) 9 When Balak son of Zippor,(Z) the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor(AA) to put a curse on you.(AB) 10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you(AC) again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.
11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan(AD) and came to Jericho.(AE) The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites,(AF) Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites,(AG) but I gave them into your hands.(AH) 12 I sent the hornet(AI) ahead of you, which drove them out(AJ) before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow.(AK) 13 So I gave you a land(AL) on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’(AM)
14 “Now fear the Lord(AN) and serve him with all faithfulness.(AO) Throw away the gods(AP) your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt,(AQ) and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites,(AR) in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,(AS) we will serve the Lord.”(AT)
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake(AU) the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery,(AV) and performed those great signs(AW) before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out(AX) before us all the nations,(AY) including the Amorites, who lived in the land.(AZ) We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.(BA)”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God;(BB) he is a jealous God.(BC) He will not forgive(BD) your rebellion(BE) and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord(BF) and serve foreign gods, he will turn(BG) and bring disaster(BH) on you and make an end of you,(BI) after he has been good to you.”
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses(BJ) against yourselves that you have chosen(BK) to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,(BL)” they replied.
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods(BM) that are among you and yield your hearts(BN) to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”(BO)
25 On that day Joshua made a covenant(BP) for the people, and there at Shechem(BQ) he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.(BR) 26 And Joshua recorded(BS) these things in the Book of the Law of God.(BT) Then he took a large stone(BU) and set it up there under the oak(BV) near the holy place of the Lord.
27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone(BW) will be a witness(BX) against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue(BY) to your God.”(BZ)
28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.(CA)
Buried in the Promised Land(CB)
29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died(CC) at the age of a hundred and ten.(CD) 30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah[c](CE) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.(CF)
31 Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders(CG) who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.
32 And Joseph’s bones,(CH) which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt,(CI) were buried at Shechem in the tract of land(CJ) that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver[d] from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.
33 And Eleazar son of Aaron(CK) died and was buried at Gibeah,(CL) which had been allotted to his son Phinehas(CM) in the hill country(CN) of Ephraim.
