9 “以色列啊，你要聽，你今日快要過約旦河，進去趕出比你又大又強的列國，佔領堅固、高得頂天的城市。 2 那地的民族又高又大，就是亞衲族的人，是你知道的，你也聽過有人指著他們說：‘誰能在亞衲族人面前站立得住呢？’ 3 所以今日你要知道，耶和華你的 神要像烈火一樣在你面前過去；他要消滅他們，他要在你面前把他們征服；這樣你就可以照著耶和華吩咐你的，把他們趕走，使他們迅速滅亡。 4 耶和華你的 神把這些國的民從你面前驅逐出去以後，你心裡不要說：‘耶和華把我領進來取得這地，是因著我的義。’其實耶和華從你面前把這些國的民趕出去，是因著他們的惡。 5 你進去取得他們的地，並不是因著你的義，也不是因著你心裡的正直，而是因著這些國的民的惡，耶和華你的 神才把他們從你面前趕出去，為要實踐他向你的列祖亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各，起誓應許的話。 6 你要知道，耶和華你的 神把這美地賜給你作產業，並不是因著你的義；你本來是頑固的民族。

25 “因為耶和華說要消滅你們，我就俯伏在耶和華面前，共俯伏了四十晝夜。 26 我祈求耶和華，說：‘主耶和華啊，求你不要毀滅你的子民，你的產業，就是你藉著你的大能救贖，藉著你有力的手從埃及領出來的。 27 求你記念你的僕人亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各；不要看這民族的頑固、邪惡和罪過， 28 免得你領我們從那裡出來的那地的人說：“耶和華因為不能把他們領進他應許的地，又因為恨他們，所以才把他們領出來，要在曠野殺死他們。” 29 但是，他們是你的子民，是你的產業，又是你藉著大能和伸出來的膀臂領出來的。’”

Dios destruirá a las naciones de Canaán
9 Oye, Israel: Hoy vas a pasar el Jordán para entrar a desposeer a naciones más grandes y más poderosas que tú(A), ciudades grandes y fortificadas hasta el cielo(B), 2 un pueblo grande y alto, los hijos de los anaceos, a quienes conoces y de quienes has oído decir: «¿Quién puede resistir ante los hijos de Anac(C)?». 3 Comprende, pues, hoy, que es el Señor tu Dios(D) el que pasa delante de ti como fuego consumidor(E). Él los destruirá y los humillará delante de ti, para que los expulses[a] y los destruyas rápidamente(F), tal como el Señor te ha dicho. 4 No digas en tu corazón cuando el Señor tu Dios los haya echado de delante de ti[b]: «Por mi justicia el Señor me ha hecho entrar para poseer esta tierra(G)», sino que es a causa de la maldad de estas naciones que el Señor las expulsa[c] de delante de ti(H). 5 No es por tu justicia(I) ni por la rectitud de tu corazón que vas a poseer su tierra, sino que por la maldad de estas naciones el Señor tu Dios las expulsa[d] de delante de ti, para confirmar el pacto[e] que el Señor juró a tus padres(J) Abraham, Isaac y Jacob. 6 Comprende, pues, que no es por tu justicia que el Señor tu Dios te da esta buena tierra para poseerla, pues eres un pueblo de dura cerviz(K).

7 Acuérdate; no olvides cómo provocaste a ira al Señor tu Dios en el desierto; desde el día en que saliste de la tierra de Egipto hasta que llegasteis a este lugar, habéis sido rebeldes contra el Señor(L). 8 Hasta en Horeb provocasteis a ira al Señor, y el Señor se enojó tanto contra vosotros que estuvo a punto de destruiros(M). 9 Cuando subí al monte para recibir las tablas de piedra, las tablas del pacto que el Señor había hecho con vosotros, me quedé en el monte cuarenta días y cuarenta noches; no comí pan ni bebí agua(N). 10 Y el Señor me dio las dos tablas de piedra escritas por el dedo de Dios(O); y en ellas estaban todas las palabras que el Señor os había dicho en el monte, de en medio del fuego, el día de la asamblea. 11 Y aconteció al cabo de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, que el Señor me dio las dos tablas de piedra, las tablas del pacto(P). 12 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Levántate; baja aprisa de aquí, porque tu pueblo que sacaste de Egipto se ha corrompido(Q). Pronto se han apartado del camino que yo les había ordenado; se han hecho un ídolo de fundición(R)». 13 También me habló el Señor(S), diciendo: «He visto a este pueblo, y en verdad es un pueblo de dura cerviz(T). 14 Déjame que los destruya(U) y borre su nombre de debajo del cielo(V); y de ti haré una nación más grande y más poderosa que ellos». 15 Y volví, y descendí del monte mientras el monte ardía en fuego, y las dos tablas del pacto estaban en mis dos manos(W). 16 Y vi que en verdad habíais pecado contra el Señor vuestro Dios. Os habíais hecho un becerro de fundición; pronto os habíais apartado del camino que el Señor os había ordenado. 17 Tomé las dos tablas, las arrojé de mis manos y las hice pedazos delante de vuestros ojos. 18 Y me postré delante del Señor como al principio, por cuarenta días y cuarenta noches(X); no comí pan ni bebí agua(Y), a causa de todo el pecado que habíais cometido al hacer lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, provocándole a ira(Z). 19 Porque temí la ira(AA) y el furor con que el Señor estaba enojado contra vosotros para destruiros, pero el Señor me escuchó también esta vez(AB). 20 Y el Señor se enojó tanto con Aarón que quiso destruirlo; y también intercedí por Aarón al mismo tiempo. 21 Y tomé el objeto de vuestro pecado, el becerro que os habíais hecho, y lo quemé en el fuego, y lo hice pedazos, desmenuzándolo hasta que quedó tan fino como el polvo; y eché su polvo al arroyo que bajaba del monte(AC).
22 Nuevamente, en Tabera(AD), en Masah(AE) y en Kibrot-hataava(AF), provocasteis a ira al Señor. 23 Y cuando el Señor os envió de Cades-barnea(AG), diciendo: «Subid y tomad posesión de la tierra que yo os he dado(AH)», entonces os rebelasteis contra la orden[f] del Señor vuestro Dios; no le creísteis, ni escuchasteis su voz(AI). 24 Vosotros habéis sido rebeldes al Señor desde el día en que os conocí(AJ).

Warning against Self-Righteousness
9 ‘Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and drive out nations greater and stronger than you,(A) with large cities fortified to the heavens.(B) 2 The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the Anakim.(C) You know about them and you have heard it said about them, “Who can stand up to the sons of Anak? ”(D) 3 But understand that today the Lord your God will cross over ahead of you(E) as a consuming fire;(F) he will devastate and subdue them before you. You will drive them out and destroy them swiftly,(G) as the Lord has told you. 4 When the Lord your God drives them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord brought me in to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.”(H) Instead, the Lord will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness.(I) 5 You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the Lord your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to fulfil the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land(J) to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.(K)
Israel’s Rebellion and Moses’s Intercession
7 ‘Remember(L) and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the Lord from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place. 8 You provoked the Lord at Horeb, and he was angry enough with you to destroy you. 9 When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant(M) the Lord made with you, I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. I did not eat food or drink water. 10 On the day of the assembly the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by God’s finger.(N) The exact words were on them, which the Lord spoke to you from the fire on the mountain.(O) 11 The Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant, at the end of the forty days and forty nights.
12 ‘The Lord said to me, “Get up and go down immediately from here. For your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast image for themselves.”(P) 13 The Lord also said to me, “I have seen this people, and indeed, they are a stiff-necked people. 14 Leave me alone, and I will destroy them and blot out their name under heaven.(Q) Then I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15 ‘So I went back down the mountain, while it was blazing with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 16 I saw how you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made a calf image for yourselves. You had quickly turned from the way the Lord had commanded for you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands, shattering them before your eyes.(R) 18 I fell down like the first time in the presence of the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I did not eat food or drink water because of all the sin you committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and angering him. 19 I was afraid of the fierce anger the Lord had directed against you,(S) because he was about to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me on that occasion.(T) 20 The Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. But I prayed for Aaron at that time also. 21 I took the sinful calf you had made and burned it. I crushed it, thoroughly grinding it to powder as fine as dust, and threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.(U)
22 ‘You continued to provoke the Lord at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah.(V) 23 When the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, he said, “Go up and possess the land I have given you”; you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not believe or obey him.(W) 24 You have been rebelling against the Lord ever since I have[a] known you.(X)
25 ‘I fell down in the presence of the Lord for forty days and forty nights because the Lord had threatened to destroy you. 26 I prayed to the Lord:
Lord God, do not annihilate your people, your inheritance, whom you redeemed(Y) through your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Disregard this people’s stubbornness, and their wickedness and sin. 28 Otherwise, those in the land you brought us from will say, “Because the Lord wasn’t able to bring them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.”(Z) 29 But they are your people, your inheritance, whom you brought out by your great power and outstretched arm.(AA)
