4 “以色列人哪，现在你们要听我向来教训你们遵行的律例和典章，使你们可以活着，可以进去得着耶和华你们列祖的 神赐给你们的地作产业。 2 我吩咐你们的话，你们不可增加，也不可减少，好使你们遵守我吩咐你们的，就是耶和华你们的 神的命令。 3 耶和华因巴力．毘珥的事所行的，你们都亲眼看见了；所有跟随巴力．毘珥的人，耶和华你们的 神都从你们中间消灭了。 4 只有你们紧紧倚靠耶和华你们的 神的人，今日全都活着。 5 看哪，我照着耶和华我的 神吩咐我的，把律例和典章教训你们，好让你们在将要进去得为业的地上遵行。 6 所以你们要谨守遵行，因为在万民的眼中看来，这就是你们的智慧和聪明；他们一听见这一切律例，就必定说：‘这大国的人真是有智慧，有聪明啊。’ 7 哪一个大国的人有神与他们这样亲近，像耶和华我们的 神，在我们每次呼求他的时候，与我们亲近一样呢？ 8 又哪一个大国有这样公义的律例和典章，像我今日在你面前颁布的这一切律法呢？
9 “你只要自己谨慎，又要谨守你的心思，免得你忘了你亲眼看见的事，又免得这些事在你有生之日离开你的心；总要把这些事传给你的子子孙孙， 10 免得你忘了你在何烈山，站在耶和华你们的 神面前的那天。那时耶和华对我说：‘你要为我召集众民，我要叫他们听我的话，使他们在那地上生活的日子，可以学习敬畏我，又可以教训自己的儿女。’ 11 那时，你们走前来，站在山下；山上有火烧着，火焰冲天，又有黑暗、密云和幽暗。 12 耶和华从火中对你们说话；你们只听见声音，却没有看见形象；只有声音， 13 把他的约，就是他吩咐你们遵守的那十条诫命（“十条诫命”直译是“十句话”），向你们宣布出来；又把它们写在两块石版上。 14 那时，耶和华也吩咐我把律例和典章教训你们，使你们在将要过去得为业的地上遵行。
警告人民勿拜偶像
15 “所以你们要特别小心，谨慎自己，因为耶和华在何烈山从火中对你们说话的那一天，你们没有看见甚么形象； 16 恐怕你们败坏自己，为自己制造偶像，制造任何神像的形象，无论是男像或是女像， 17 或是地上各种走兽的像，或是飞翔在空中各类有翅膀的雀鸟的像， 18 或是地上各种爬行的动物的像，或是地底下水里各样鱼类的像。 19 又恐怕你抬头望天，看见日、月、星，就是天上万象的时候，就被勾引，去敬拜和事奉它们，那原是耶和华你们的 神分给天下万民享用的。 20 耶和华却把你们从埃及，从铁炉那里领出来，作他自己的产业，自己的人民，像今日一样。 21 耶和华又因你们的缘故，向我发怒，并且起誓不让我过约旦河，也不容我进入耶和华你的 神赐给你作产业的那美地。 22 我只有死在此地，不得过约旦河；你们却可以过去，取得那美地作产业。 23 你们要自己谨慎，免得你们忘记了耶和华你们的 神与你们所立的约，你们就为自己制造偶像，制造任何神像的形象，就是耶和华你的 神吩咐你不可作的。 24 因为耶和华你的 神是烈火，是忌邪的 神。
25 “你们生子生孙，在那地住久了的时候，如果你们败坏自己，制造偶像，制造任何神像的形象，行耶和华你的 神看为恶的事，惹他发怒， 26 我今日就呼天唤地向你们作证，你们必在过约旦河取得为业的地上迅速灭亡；你们必不能在那地长久生存，必全被消灭。 27 耶和华必使你们分散在万民中；在耶和华要领你们所到的万国中，你们剩下的人数必不多。 28 在那里你们必事奉人手所做的神，就是用木头石头做成的，不能看、不能听、不能吃、不能闻的神。 29 但你们在那里必寻求耶和华你的 神；如果你一心一意寻找他，就必寻见。 30 日后，你落在患难中，这些事都临到你身上的时候，你必归向耶和华你的 神，听从他的话； 31 因为耶和华你的 神原是满有怜悯的 神，他必不丢弃你，不毁灭你，也不忘记他起誓与你的列祖所立的约。
唯耶和华是 神
32 “你问问在你以前过去的日子，自从 神创造人在地上以来，从天这边到天那边，有没有人行过这样的大事，听过像这样的事呢？ 33 有没有一个民族听见 神在火中说话的声音，像你听见的一样，还能活着呢？ 34 有没有一位神尝试借着试验、神迹、奇事、战争、大能的手和伸出来的膀臂，以及大而可畏的事，把一国的人民从别的国中领出来，像耶和华你们的 神在埃及，在你们面前为你们所作的一切事呢？ 35 这是要显明给你看，使你知道，只有耶和华是 神；除了他以外，再没有别的神。 36 他从天上使你听见他的声音，为要教导你；又在地上使你看见他的大火，并且叫你听到他从火中所说的话。 37 因为他爱你的列祖，所以才拣选了他们的（按照《马索拉文本》，“他们的”作“他的”；现参照其他抄本及古译本翻译）后裔，用大能亲自把你从埃及领出来， 38 为要把比你大比你强的民族，从你面前赶走，然后领你进去，把他们的地赐给你作产业，像今日一样。 39 所以今天你要知道，也要记在心里；天上地下，只有耶和华是 神；除他以外，再没有别的神了。 40 你要遵守我今日吩咐你的律例和诫命，使你和你的子孙得享福乐，也使你在耶和华你的 神赐给你的那地上得享长寿。”
约旦河东之避难城
41 那时，摩西在约旦河东，日出的方向，把三座城分别出来， 42 让那些素无仇恨、无心误杀人的，可以逃到那里去；逃到这三座城的一座去的，都可以活着： 43 为流本人，分出了在旷野平原的比悉；为迦得人，分出了基列的拉末；为玛拿西人，分出了巴珊的哥兰。

Obedience Commanded
4 Now, Israel, hear the decrees(A) and laws I am about to teach(B) you. Follow them so that you may live(C) and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add(D) to what I command you and do not subtract(E) from it, but keep(F) the commands(G) of the Lord your God that I give you.
3 You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.(H) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.
5 See, I have taught(I) you decrees and laws(J) as the Lord my God commanded(K) me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering(L) to take possession of it. 6 Observe(M) them carefully, for this will show your wisdom(N) and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”(O) 7 What other nation is so great(P) as to have their gods near(Q) them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws(R) as this body of laws I am setting before you today?
9 Only be careful,(S) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach(T) them to your children(U) and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,(V) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn(W) to revere(X) me as long as they live in the land(Y) and may teach(Z) them to their children.” 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain(AA) while it blazed with fire(AB) to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.(AC) 12 Then the Lord spoke(AD) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;(AE) there was only a voice.(AF) 13 He declared to you his covenant,(AG) the Ten Commandments,(AH) which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws(AI) you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
Idolatry Forbidden
15 You saw no form(AJ) of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb(AK) out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,(AL) 16 so that you do not become corrupt(AM) and make for yourselves an idol,(AN) an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air,(AO) 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun,(AP) the moon and the stars(AQ)—all the heavenly array(AR)—do not be enticed(AS) into bowing down to them and worshiping(AT) things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace,(AU) out of Egypt,(AV) to be the people of his inheritance,(AW) as you now are.
21 The Lord was angry with me(AX) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land;(AY) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.(AZ) 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant(BA) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol(BB) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,(BC) a jealous God.(BD)
25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt(BE) and make any kind of idol,(BF) doing evil(BG) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses(BH) against you(BI) this day that you will quickly perish(BJ) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter(BK) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive(BL) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods(BM) of wood and stone,(BN) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.(BO) 29 But if from there you seek(BP) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart(BQ) and with all your soul.(BR) 30 When you are in distress(BS) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days(BT) you will return(BU) to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful(BV) God; he will not abandon(BW) or destroy(BX) you or forget(BY) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.
The Lord Is God
32 Ask(BZ) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;(CA) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.(CB) Has anything so great(CC) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?(CD) 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,(CE) by testings,(CF) by signs(CG) and wonders,(CH) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(CI) or by great and awesome deeds,(CJ) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.(CK) 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice(CL) to discipline(CM) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved(CN) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,(CO) 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,(CP) as it is today.
39 Acknowledge(CQ) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.(CR) 40 Keep(CS) his decrees and commands,(CT) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well(CU) with you and your children after you and that you may live long(CV) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
Cities of Refuge(CW)
41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally(CX) killed a neighbor without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth(CY) in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
Introduction to the Law
44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon(CZ) king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer(DA) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion[b](DB) (that is, Hermon(DC)), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,[c] below the slopes of Pisgah.

Mose befaller lydnad
4 Och nu Israel, lyssna till de stadgar och föreskrifter som jag vill lära er att följa, för att ni ska leva och komma in i och ta i besittning det land som Herren, era fäders Gud, vill ge er. 2 (A) Ni ska inte lägga något till det som jag befaller er och inte ta något därifrån utan hålla Herren er Guds bud som jag ger er. 3 (B) bNi har med egna ögon sett vad Herren har gjort i fråga om Baal-Peor. Herren din Gud utrotade ur ditt folk var och en som följde Baal-Peor. 4 Men ni som höll fast vid Herren er Gud ni lever alla än i dag.
5 Se, jag har lärt er stadgar och föreskrifter så som Herren min Gud har befallt mig, för att ni ska följa dem i det land dit ni kommer för att ta det i besittning. 6 Ni ska hålla och följa dem, och det ska tillräknas er som vishet och förstånd av andra folk. När de får höra om alla dessa lagar ska de säga: ”Detta stora folk är verkligen ett vist och förståndigt folk!” 7 (C) Finns det något annat stort folk som har gudar som är lika nära det som Herren vår Gud är nära oss så ofta vi åkallar honom? 8 (D) Och finns det något annat stort folk som har stadgar och föreskrifter som är så rättfärdiga som hela denna lag som jag i dag lägger fram för er?
9 (E) Men ta dig till vara och akta dig noga så att du inte glömmer vad dina ögon såg eller låter det vika från ditt hjärta under alla dina livsdagar. Berätta för dina barn och barnbarn 10 vad som hände den dag du stod inför Herren din Gud vid Horeb, när Herren sade till mig: ”Samla folket till mig. Jag vill låta dem höra mina ord, och de ska lära sig dem så att de fruktar mig så länge de lever på jorden. Och de ska lära sina barn dem.”
11 Då kom ni fram och stannade vid bergets fot. Berget brann i eld ända upp till himlen, och där var mörker, moln och töcken. 12 Och Herren talade till er ur elden. Ni hörde orden men såg ingen gestalt, ni hörde bara rösten. 13 (F) Han förkunnade för er sitt förbund som han befallde er att hålla, de tio orden, och han skrev dem på två stentavlor. 14 Herren befallde mig på den tiden att jag skulle lära er stadgar och föreskrifter som ni skulle följa i det land dit ni går för att ta det i besittning.
Avgudadyrkan förbjuds
15 Eftersom ni inte såg någon gestalt den dag då Herren talade till er på Horeb ur elden ska ni noga akta er, 16 (G) så att ni inte försyndar er genom att ni gör åt er något beläte, något slags avgudabild, en bild av man eller kvinna 17 (H) eller en bild av något djur på jorden eller någon bevingad fågel som flyger under himlen 18 eller något kräldjur på marken eller någon fisk i vattnet under jorden. 19 (I) Och när du lyfter din blick mot himlen och ser solen, månen och stjärnorna, himlens hela härskara, låt dig då inte förledas att tillbe dem och tjäna dem, för Herren din Gud har gett dem åt alla folk under hela himlen som deras del. 20 (J) Men er har Herren tagit och han har fört er ut ur smältugnen[a], ut ur Egypten, för att ni ska vara hans egendomsfolk, så som ni är i dag.
21 (K) Herren blev vred på mig för er skull och svor att jag inte skulle gå över Jordan och inte komma in i det goda land som Herren din Gud vill ge dig till arvedel. 22 Jag kommer att dö i detta land och inte gå över Jordan, men ni ska gå över den och ta det goda landet i besittning.
23 Akta er så att ni inte glömmer det förbund som Herren er Gud har slutit med er, så att ni inte gör er en avgud, en bild tvärtemot vad Herren din Gud har befallt dig, 24 (L) för Herren din Gud är en förtärande eld[b], han är en nitisk Gud.
25 När du har fött barn och barnbarn och ni bott länge i landet, om ni då försyndar er genom att ni gör er en avgud, ett slags bild, och därmed gör det som är ont i Herren din Guds ögon och väcker hans vrede, 26 (M) då tar jag i dag himmel och jord till vittne mot er att ni snart kommer att utrotas ur det land dit ni nu går över Jordan för att ta det i besittning. Ni kommer inte att leva där länge utan kommer att helt förgöras. 27 (N) Och Herren ska skingra er bland folken, och endast ett litet antal av er ska bli kvar bland de hednafolk som Herren ska driva er bort till. 28 (O) Där ska ni tjäna gudar som blivit gjorda av människohänder, gudar av trä och sten. De kan varken se eller höra, äta eller lukta.
29 (P) Men om ni där söker Herren din Gud ska du finna honom, om du söker honom av hela ditt hjärta och av hela din själ. 30 När du är i nöd och allt detta händer dig i kommande dagar ska du vända om till Herren din Gud och lyda hans röst, 31 för Herren din Gud är en barmhärtig Gud. Han ska inte överge dig eller förgöra dig. Han ska inte glömma det förbund han med ed har ingått med dina fäder.
Herren är Gud
32 Fråga tider som varit, tider som varit före dig, från den dag då Gud skapade människor på jorden, fråga från himlens ena ände till den andra: Har det någonsin hänt något så stort som detta, eller har man hört talas om något som liknar det? 33 (Q) Har något folk hört Guds röst tala ur elden, så som du har hört, och överlevt? 34 Eller har någon gud försökt att gå och ta ett folk åt sig ur ett annat folk, genom prövningar, tecken och under, genom krig, genom stark hand och uträckt arm och genom stora och fruktansvärda gärningar, allt detta som Herren er Gud har gjort med er i Egypten inför dina ögon?
35 (R) Du har själv fått se det, för att du skulle veta att Herren är Gud: Det finns ingen annan än han. 36 Från himlen lät han dig höra sin röst för att undervisa dig, och på jorden lät han dig se sin stora eld, och du har hört hans ord ur elden. 37 (S) Eftersom han älskade dina fäder och utvalde deras avkomlingar efter dem, förde han genom sin närvaro och stora kraft dig ut ur Egypten. 38 Han drev bort för dig folk, större och mäktigare än du, och förde dig in i deras land och gav det åt dig till arvedel, så som det är i dag.
39 Därför ska du i dag veta och lägga på hjärtat att Herren är Gud uppe i himlen och nere på jorden: Det finns ingen annan. 40 (T) Och du ska hålla hans stadgar och bud som jag i dag ger dig, så att det går väl för dig och dina barn efter dig och du får leva länge i det land som Herren din Gud vill ge dig för all framtid.
Fristäderna öster om Jordan
41 (U) Vid denna tid avskilde Mose tre städer i öster på andra sidan Jordan 42 dit en dråpare skulle kunna fly[c] om han hade dödat någon utan vett och vilja och utan att förut ha burit hat till honom. Genom att fly till någon av dessa städer skulle han få leva. 43 De var: Beser i öknen på slättlandet för Rubens stam, Ramot i Gilead för Gads stam och Golan i Bashan för Manasse stam.
Inledning till lagen
44 Detta är den undervisning som Mose lade fram för Israels barn, 45 och dessa är de vittnesbörd, stadgar och föreskrifter som Mose kungjorde för Israels barn efter att de hade dragit ut ur Egypten. 46 (V) Det var på andra sidan Jordan i dalen mitt emot Bet-Peor, i amoreerkungen Sichons land, han som bodde i Heshbon och som Mose och Israel slog när de hade dragit ut ur Egypten. 47 (W) De intog hans land och landet som tillhörde kung Og i Bashan, de två amoreiska kungarnas länder i öster på andra sidan Jordan, 48 från Aroer vid floden Arnons strand ända till berget Sion[d], det vill säga Hermon, 49 (X) och hela Hedmarken i öster på andra sidan Jordan, ända till Hedmarkshavet nedanför Pisgas sluttningar.
