摩西宣述昔从何烈起行之事

以下所记的,是摩西约旦河东的旷野,疏弗对面的亚拉巴,就是巴兰陀弗拉班哈洗录底撒哈中间,向以色列众人所说的话。 何烈山经过西珥山,到加低斯巴尼亚,有十一天的路程。 埃及第四十年十一月初一日,摩西照耶和华借着他所吩咐以色列人的话,都晓谕他们。 那时,他已经击杀了住希实本亚摩利西宏和住以得来亚斯他录巴珊 摩西约旦河东的摩押地讲律法说: “耶和华我们的神在何烈山晓谕我们说:‘你们在这山上住的日子够了, 要起行转到亚摩利人的山地和靠近这山地的各处,就是亚拉巴、山地、高原、南地、沿海一带迦南人的地,并黎巴嫩山,又到伯拉大河。 如今我将这地摆在你们面前,你们要进去得这地,就是耶和华向你们列祖亚伯拉罕以撒雅各起誓应许赐给他们和他们后裔为业之地。’

“那时,我对你们说:‘管理你们的重任,我独自担当不起。 10 耶和华你们的神使你们多起来,看哪,你们今日像天上的星那样多! 11 唯愿耶和华你们列祖的神使你们比如今更多千倍,照他所应许你们的话赐福于你们。 12 但你们的麻烦和管理你们的重任,并你们的争讼,我独自一人怎能担当得起呢? 13 你们要按着各支派选举有智慧、有见识、为众人所认识的,我立他们为你们的首领。’ 14 你们回答我说:‘照你所说的行了为妙。’ 15 我便将你们各支派的首领,有智慧、为众人所认识的,照你们的支派立他们为官长、千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长、十夫长,管理你们。 16 当时,我嘱咐你们的审判官说:‘你们听讼,无论是弟兄彼此争讼,是与同居的外人争讼,都要按公义判断。 17 审判的时候,不可看人的外貌,听讼不可分贵贱;不可惧怕人,因为审判是属乎神的。若有难断的案件,可以呈到我这里,我就判断。’ 18 那时,我将你们所当行的事都吩咐你们了。

遣人窥地

19 “我们照着耶和华我们神所吩咐的,从何烈山起行,经过你们所看见那大而可怕的旷野,往亚摩利人的山地去,到了加低斯巴尼亚 20 我对你们说:‘你们已经到了耶和华我们神所赐给我们的亚摩利人之山地。 21 看哪,耶和华你的神已将那地摆在你面前,你要照耶和华你列祖的神所说的上去得那地为业。不要惧怕,也不要惊惶。’ 22 你们都就近我来说:‘我们要先打发人去,为我们窥探那地,将我们上去该走何道,必进何城,都回报我们。’ 23 这话我以为美,就从你们中间选了十二个人,每支派一人。 24 于是他们起身上山地去,到以实各谷,窥探那地。 25 他们手里拿着那地的果子下来,到我们那里,回报说:‘耶和华我们的神所赐给我们的是美地。’

民众弗信

26 “你们却不肯上去,竟违背了耶和华你们神的命令, 27 在帐篷内发怨言说:‘耶和华因为恨我们,所以将我们从埃及地领出来,要交在亚摩利人手中,除灭我们。 28 我们上哪里去呢?我们的弟兄使我们的心消化,说那地的民比我们又大又高,城邑又广大又坚固,高得顶天,并且我们在那里看见亚衲族的人。’ 29 我就对你们说:‘不要惊恐,也不要怕他们。 30 在你们前面行的耶和华你们的神必为你们争战,正如他在埃及和旷野,在你们眼前所行的一样。 31 你们在旷野所行的路上,也曾见耶和华你们的神抚养你们,如同人抚养儿子一般,直等你们来到这地方。’ 32 你们在这事上却不信耶和华你们的神! 33 他在路上,在你们前面行,为你们找安营的地方,夜间在火柱里、日间在云柱里,指示你们所当行的路。

34 “耶和华听见你们这话,就发怒,起誓说: 35 ‘这恶世代的人,连一个也不得见我起誓应许赐给你们列祖的美地。 36 唯有耶孚尼的儿子迦勒必得看见,并且我要将他所踏过的地赐给他和他的子孙,因为他专心跟从我。’ 37 耶和华为你的缘故也向我发怒,说:‘你必不得进入那地。 38 伺候你,的儿子约书亚,他必得进入那地。你要勉励他,因为他要使以色列人承受那地为业。 39 并且你们的妇人孩子,就是你们所说必被掳掠的,和今日不知善恶的儿女,必进入那地。我要将那地赐给他们,他们必得为业。 40 至于你们,要转回,从海的路往旷野去。’

41 “那时,你们回答我说:‘我们得罪了耶和华,情愿照耶和华我们神一切所吩咐的上去争战。’于是你们各人带着兵器,争先上山地去了。

42 “耶和华吩咐我说:‘你对他们说:不要上去,也不要争战,因我不在你们中间,恐怕你们被仇敌杀败了。’ 43 我就告诉了你们,你们却不听从,竟违背耶和华的命令,擅自上山地去了。 44 住那山地的亚摩利人就出来攻击你们,追赶你们,如蜂拥一般,在西珥杀退你们,直到何珥玛 45 你们便回来,在耶和华面前哭号。耶和华却不听你们的声音,也不向你们侧耳。 46 于是你们在加低斯住了许多日子。

The Previous Command to Enter Canaan

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel (A)on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the [a]plain opposite [b]Suph, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir (B)to Kadesh Barnea. Now it came to pass (C)in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him as commandments to them, (D)after he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth (E)in[c] Edrei.

On this side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying, “The Lord our God spoke to us (F)in Horeb, saying: ‘You have dwelt long (G)enough at this mountain. Turn and take your journey, and go to the mountains of the Amorites, to all the neighboring places in the [d]plain, in the mountains and in the lowland, in the South and on the seacoast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates. See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord [e]swore to your fathers—to (H)Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to them and their descendants after them.’

Tribal Leaders Appointed(I)

“And (J)I spoke to you at that time, saying: ‘I [f]alone am not able to bear you. 10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, (K)and here you are today, as the stars of heaven in multitude. 11 (L)May the Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times more numerous than you are, and bless you (M)as He has promised you! 12 (N)How can I alone bear your problems and your burdens and your complaints? 13 Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them [g]heads over you.’ 14 And you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have told us to do is good.’ 15 So I took (O)the heads of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and [h]made them heads over you, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for your tribes.

16 “Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren, and (P)judge righteously between a man and his (Q)brother or the stranger who is with him. 17 (R)You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for (S)the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, (T)bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

Israel’s Refusal to Enter the Land(U)

19 “So we departed from Horeb, (V)and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Then (W)we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21 Look, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; (X)do not fear or be discouraged.’

22 “And every one of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we shall come.’

23 “The plan pleased me well; so (Y)I took twelve of your men, one man from each tribe. 24 (Z)And they departed and went up into the mountains, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 They also took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought back word to us, saying, ‘It is a (AA)good land which the Lord our God is giving us.’

26 (AB)“Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; 27 and you (AC)complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because the Lord (AD)hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brethren have [i]discouraged our hearts, saying, (AE)“The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the (AF)Anakim there.” ’

29 “Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, (AG)or afraid of them. 30 (AH)The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a (AI)man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet, for all that, (AJ)you did not believe the Lord your God, 33 (AK)who went in the way before you (AL)to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day.

The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion(AM)

34 “And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, (AN)and took an oath, saying, 35 (AO)‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I [j]swore to give to your fathers, 36 (AP)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because (AQ)he [k]wholly followed the Lord.’ 37 (AR)The Lord was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you shall not go in there. 38 (AS)Joshua the son of Nun, (AT)who stands before you, he shall go in there. (AU)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 (AV)‘Moreover your little ones and your children, who (AW)you say will be victims, who today (AX)have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there; to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40 (AY)But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’

41 “Then you answered and said to me, (AZ)‘We have sinned against the Lord; we will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And when everyone of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.

42 “And the Lord said to me, ‘Tell them, (BA)“Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.” ’ 43 So I spoke to you; yet you would not listen, but (BB)rebelled against the command of the Lord, and (BC)presumptuously[l] went up into the mountain. 44 And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you (BD)as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

46 (BE)“So you remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you spent there.
