17 「凡有殘疾，有任何惡疾的牛羊，你都不可獻給耶和華—你的　神，因為這是耶和華—你　神所憎惡的。

2 「在你中間，在耶和華—你　神所賜你的各城中，任何一座城裏，若有男人或女人做了耶和華—你　神眼中看為惡的事，違背了他的約， 3 去事奉別神，敬拜它們，或拜太陽，或拜月亮，或拜天上的萬象，是我[a]不曾吩咐的。 4 有人告訴你，你也聽見了，就要細心探聽。看哪，是真的，確實有這可憎的事在以色列中發生， 5 你就要將行這惡事的男人或女人拉到城門外，用石頭把這男人或女人處死。 6 要憑兩個證人或三個證人的口，才可以把他處死，不可只憑一個證人的口處死他。 7 證人要先動手，然後眾百姓也動手把他處死。這樣，你就把惡從你中間除掉。

8 「你城中若有難以判斷的案件，涉及流血，訴訟，或毆打等爭訟的事，你就要起來，上到那裏，耶和華—你　神所選擇的地方， 9 去見利未家的祭司和當時的審判官，求問他們，他們必將判決指示你。 10 他們在耶和華所選擇的地方指示你的判決，你要執行，謹守遵行他們一切所教導你的。 11 要按照所教導你的律法、所告訴你的典章去執行；他們指示你的判決，你不可偏離左右。 12 若有人擅自行事，不聽從那侍立在耶和華—你　神那裏事奉的祭司，或不聽從審判官，那人就要處死。這樣，你就把惡從以色列中除掉。 13 眾百姓聽見了都要害怕，不再擅自行事了。」

立王的指示

14 「你到了耶和華—你　神所賜你的地，得了那地居住在其中的時候，若說：『我要立王治理我，像我四圍所有的國家一樣』， 15 你一定要立耶和華—你　神所揀選的人為你的王。要從你弟兄中立一人為你的王，不可立你弟兄之外的外邦人治理你。 16 只是王不可為自己加添馬匹，也不可為加添馬匹使百姓回埃及去，因耶和華曾對你們說：『不可再回那條路去。』 17 王不可為自己多立妃嬪，免得他的心偏離；也不可為自己多積金銀。 18 他登了國度的王位之後，要在利未家的祭司面前，將這律法書為自己抄寫一份在書卷上。 19 這書要存在他那裏，他一生的年日要誦讀，好使他學習敬畏耶和華—他的　神，謹守遵行這律法書上的一切話和這些律例， 20 免得他的心向弟兄高傲，偏離了這誡命，或向右或向左。這樣，他和他的子孫就可以長久作王治理以色列。」

17 »No sacrificarás al Señor tu Dios buey o cordero que tenga defecto o alguna imperfección[a](A), porque es cosa abominable al Señor tu Dios.

2 »Si en medio de ti, en cualquiera de las ciudades[b] que el Señor tu Dios te da, se encuentra un hombre o una mujer que hace lo malo ante los ojos del Señor tu Dios(B), violando Su pacto, 3 y que haya ido y servido a otros dioses(C), adorándolos, o adorando al sol, a la luna o a cualquiera de las huestes celestiales(D), lo cual Yo no he mandado(E), 4 y si te lo dicen y has oído hablar de ello, harás una investigación minuciosa. Y si es verdad y es cierto el hecho que esta abominación ha sido cometida en Israel, 5 entonces sacarás a tus puertas[c] a ese hombre o a esa mujer que ha cometido esta mala acción, y los apedrearás, al hombre o a la mujer, hasta que mueran(F). 6 Al que ha de morir se le dará muerte por la declaración[d] de dos o tres testigos. No se le dará muerte por la declaración[e] de un solo testigo(G). 7 La mano de los testigos caerá[f] primero contra él para darle muerte, y después la mano de todo el pueblo(H). Así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti(I).

8 »Si un caso te es muy difícil de juzgar(J), como entre una clase de homicidio y otra[g], entre una clase de pleito y otra[h], o entre una clase de asalto y otra[i], siendo casos de litigio en tus puertas[j], te levantarás y subirás al lugar que el Señor tu Dios escoja(K). 9 Y vendrás al sacerdote levita o al juez que oficie en aquellos días, y consultarás con ellos(L), y ellos te declararán el fallo del caso. 10 Harás conforme a los términos[k] de la sentencia que te declaren desde aquel lugar que el Señor escoja; y cuidarás de observar todo lo que ellos te enseñen. 11 Según los términos[l] de la ley que ellos te enseñen, y según la sentencia que te declaren, así harás(M); no te apartarás a la derecha ni a la izquierda de la palabra que ellos te declaren. 12 Y el hombre que proceda con orgullo, no escuchando al sacerdote(N) que está allí para servir al Señor tu Dios, ni al juez, ese hombre morirá(O). Así quitarás el mal de en medio de Israel(P). 13 Entonces todo el pueblo escuchará y temerá, y no volverá a proceder con arrogancia(Q).

Instrucciones sobre los reyes

14 »Cuando entres en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da, y la poseas y habites en ella(R), y digas: “Pondré un rey sobre mí, como todas las naciones que me rodean(S)”, 15 ciertamente pondrás sobre ti al rey que el Señor tu Dios escoja, a uno de entre tus hermanos[m](T) pondrás por rey sobre ti; no pondrás sobre ti a un extranjero que no sea hermano[n] tuyo. 16 Además, el rey no tendrá muchos caballos(U), ni hará que el pueblo vuelva a Egipto(V) para tener muchos caballos(W), pues el Señor te ha dicho: “Jamás volverán ustedes por ese camino”. 17 Tampoco tendrá muchas mujeres, no sea que[o] su corazón se desvíe(X); ni tendrá grandes cantidades de plata y oro.

18 »Y cuando él se siente sobre el trono de su reino, escribirá para sí una copia de esta ley en un libro[p], en presencia de[q] los sacerdotes levitas(Y). 19 La tendrá consigo y la leerá todos los días de su vida, para que aprenda a temer al Señor su Dios, observando cuidadosamente[r] todas las palabras de esta ley y estos estatutos(Z), 20 para que no se eleve su corazón sobre sus hermanos[s] y no se desvíe del mandamiento ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda(AA), a fin de que prolongue sus días en su reino, él y sus hijos, en medio de Israel.

17 No ofrecerás en sacrificio a Jehová tu Dios, buey o cordero en el cual haya falta o alguna cosa mala, pues es abominación a Jehová tu Dios.

2 Cuando se hallare en medio de ti, en alguna de tus ciudades que Jehová tu Dios te da, hombre o mujer que haya hecho mal ante los ojos de Jehová tu Dios traspasando su pacto, 3 que hubiere ido y servido a dioses ajenos, y se hubiere inclinado a ellos,(A) ya sea al sol, o a la luna, o a todo el ejército del cielo, lo cual yo he prohibido; 4 y te fuere dado aviso, y después que oyeres y hubieres indagado bien, la cosa pareciere de verdad cierta, que tal abominación ha sido hecha en Israel; 5 entonces sacarás a tus puertas al hombre o a la mujer que hubiere hecho esta mala cosa, sea hombre o mujer, y los apedrearás, y así morirán. 6 Por dicho de dos o de tres testigos morirá el que hubiere de morir; no morirá por el dicho de un solo testigo.(B) 7 La mano de los testigos caerá primero sobre él para matarlo, y después la mano de todo el pueblo; así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti.

8 Cuando alguna cosa te fuere difícil en el juicio, entre una clase de homicidio y otra, entre una clase de derecho legal y otra, y entre una clase de herida y otra, en negocios de litigio en tus ciudades; entonces te levantarás y recurrirás al lugar que Jehová tu Dios escogiere; 9 y vendrás a los sacerdotes levitas, y al juez que hubiere en aquellos días, y preguntarás; y ellos te enseñarán la sentencia del juicio. 10 Y harás según la sentencia que te indiquen los del lugar que Jehová escogiere, y cuidarás de hacer según todo lo que te manifiesten. 11 Según la ley que te enseñen, y según el juicio que te digan, harás; no te apartarás ni a diestra ni a siniestra de la sentencia que te declaren. 12 Y el hombre que procediere con soberbia, no obedeciendo al sacerdote que está para ministrar allí delante de Jehová tu Dios, o al juez, el tal morirá; y quitarás el mal de en medio de Israel. 13 Y todo el pueblo oirá, y temerá, y no se ensoberbecerá.

Instrucciones acerca de un rey

14 Cuando hayas entrado en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da, y tomes posesión de ella y la habites, y digas: Pondré un rey sobre mí, como todas las naciones que están en mis alrededores;(C) 15 ciertamente pondrás por rey sobre ti al que Jehová tu Dios escogiere; de entre tus hermanos pondrás rey sobre ti; no podrás poner sobre ti a hombre extranjero, que no sea tu hermano. 16 Pero él no aumentará para sí caballos, ni hará volver al pueblo a Egipto con el fin de aumentar caballos;(D) porque Jehová os ha dicho: No volváis nunca por este camino. 17 Ni tomará para sí muchas mujeres, para que su corazón no se desvíe;(E) ni plata ni oro amontonará para sí en abundancia.(F) 18 Y cuando se siente sobre el trono de su reino, entonces escribirá para sí en un libro una copia de esta ley, del original que está al cuidado de los sacerdotes levitas; 19 y lo tendrá consigo, y leerá en él todos los días de su vida, para que aprenda a temer a Jehová su Dios, para guardar todas las palabras de esta ley y estos estatutos, para ponerlos por obra; 20 para que no se eleve su corazón sobre sus hermanos, ni se aparte del mandamiento a diestra ni a siniestra; a fin de que prolongue sus días en su reino, él y sus hijos, en medio de Israel.

Chapter 17

1 You shall not sacrifice to the Lord, your God, an ox or a sheep with any serious defect;(A) that would be an abomination to the Lord, your God.

2 (B)If there is found in your midst, in any one of the communities which the Lord, your God, gives you, a man or a woman who does evil in the sight of the Lord, your God, and transgresses his covenant,(C) 3 by going to serve other gods, by bowing down to them, to the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, contrary to my command;(D) 4 and if you are told or hear of it, you must investigate it thoroughly. If the truth of the matter is established that this abomination has been committed in Israel, 5 you shall bring the man or the woman who has done this evil deed out to your gates[a] and stone the man or the woman to death. 6 Only on the testimony of two or three witnesses shall a person be put to death;(E) no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first raised to put the person to death, and afterward the hands of all the people.(F) Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.

Judges. 8 (G)If there is a case for judgment which proves too baffling for you to decide, in a matter of bloodshed or of law or of injury, matters of dispute within your gates, you shall then go up to the place which the Lord, your God, will choose, 9 to the levitical priests or to the judge who is in office at that time. They shall investigate the case and then announce to you the decision.(H) 10 You shall act according to the decision they announce to you in the place which the Lord will choose, carefully observing everything as they instruct you. 11 You shall carry out the instruction they give you and the judgment they pronounce, without turning aside either to the right or left from the decision they announce to you. 12 Anyone who acts presumptuously and does not obey the priest[b] who officiates there in the ministry of the Lord, your God, or the judge, shall die. Thus shall you purge the evil from Israel. 13 And all the people, on hearing of it, shall fear, and will never again act presumptuously.(I)

The King. 14 (J)When you have come into the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you, and have taken possession of it and settled in it, should you then decide, “I will set a king over me, like all the surrounding nations,”(K) 15 you may indeed set over you a king whom the Lord, your God, will choose.(L) Someone from among your own kindred you may set over you as king; you may not set over you a foreigner, who is no kin of yours. 16 [c]But he shall not have a great number of horses; nor shall he make his people go back again to Egypt to acquire many horses, for the Lord said to you, Do not go back that way again.(M) 17 Neither shall he have a great number of wives, lest his heart turn away,(N) nor shall he accumulate a vast amount of silver and gold. 18 When he is sitting upon his royal throne, he shall write a copy of this law[d] upon a scroll from the one that is in the custody of the levitical priests.(O) 19 [e](P)It shall remain with him and he shall read it as long as he lives, so that he may learn to fear the Lord, his God, and to observe carefully all the words of this law and these statutes, 20 so that he does not exalt himself over his kindred or turn aside from this commandment to the right or to the left, and so that he and his descendants may reign long in Israel.

  1. 17:5 Out to your gates: outside the gates, so as not to defile the city; cf. Lv 24:14; Nm 15:36; Acts 7:58; Hb 13:12.
  2. 17:12 The priest: the high priest; the judge: a layman. The court system here, involving lay and priestly officials, resembles the one whose establishment is attributed to King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chr 19:8–11 (cf. Ex 18:17–23 and Dt 1:17).
  3. 17:16–17 This restriction on royal acquisitions may have in mind the excesses of Solomon’s reign mentioned in 1 Kgs 10:1–11:6. Horses: chariotry for war. Egypt engaged in horse trading, and the danger envisioned here is that some king might make Israel a vassal of Egypt for military aid.
  4. 17:18 A copy of this law: the source of the name Deuteronomy, which in Hebrew is literally “double” or “copy”; in the Septuagint translated as deuteronomion, literally “a second law.” In Jerome’s Latin Vulgate as deuteronium.
  5. 17:19 The only positive requirement imposed upon the king is strict adherence to the Mosaic or Deuteronomic law. In that respect, the king’s primary task was to be a model Israelite.
