立约的使者快临

万军之耶和华说:“看哪!我派我的使者,在我前面预备道路;你们所寻求的主,必忽然进入他的殿;你们所爱慕立约的使者,就要来到。” 可是,他来的日子,谁能当得起呢?他显现的时候,谁能站立得住呢?因为他像炼金之人的火,又像漂布之人的碱。 他必坐着,像熬炼和洁净银子的人;他必洁净利未人,炼净他们像炼净金银一样。这样,他们就会凭公义献礼物给耶和华。 那时,犹大和耶路撒冷所献的礼物,必蒙耶和华悦纳,正如古时的日子,也像往昔之年一样。 万军之耶和华说:“我必临近你们施行审判;我要快快指证那些行邪术的、犯奸淫的、起假誓的、在工钱上欺压雇工的、欺压孤儿寡妇的、屈枉寄居的和不敬畏我的。”

万军之耶和华说:“因为我耶和华是不改变的,所以你们雅各的子孙也不会灭没。

当纳十分之一

“从你们列祖的日子以来,你们就偏离了我的律例而不遵守。现在你们要转向我,我就必转向你们。你们还问:‘我们要怎样回转呢?’ 人怎可抢夺 神之物呢?你们却抢夺属我之物,竟还问:‘我们抢夺了你的甚么呢?’就是抢夺了当纳的十分之一和当献的祭物。 你们要受严厉的咒诅,因你们全国的人都抢夺了属我之物。” 10 万军之耶和华说:“你们要把当纳的十分之一,全部送入仓库,使我家中有粮;藉此试验我,看我是不是为你们敞开天窗,把福气倒给你们,直到充足有余呢。” 11 万军之耶和华说:“我必为你们斥责那吞吃者,不容他毁坏你们地上的果实,也不让你们田间的葡萄在未熟以先就掉下来。” 12 万军之耶和华说:“万国都要称你们为有福,因为你们的地必成为喜乐之地。”

指摘以色列狂傲自大

13 耶和华说:“你们用无礼的话顶撞我。你们还问:‘我们用甚么话顶撞了你呢?’ 14 你们说:‘事奉 神是白费的;遵守他的吩咐,在万军之耶和华面前哀痛而行,有甚么益处呢? 15 现在我们称骄傲的人为有福,作恶的人得建立;他们虽然试探 神,却得以逃脱。’”

敬畏耶和华的必蒙怜恤

16 那时,敬畏耶和华的人彼此谈论,耶和华也留意细听;在他面前有记录册,记录那些敬畏耶和华和思念他名的人。 17 万军之耶和华说:“在我施行作为的日子,他们要属我,作特别的产业;我必怜恤他们,好象人怜恤那服事自己的儿子一样。 18 那时,你们就要再看出义人与恶人、事奉 神的人和不事奉他的人之间有甚么分别。”

El SEÑOR Todopoderoso dice: «Miren, yo envío a mi mensajero para que me prepare el camino. El Señor al que ustedes buscan vendrá de repente al templo, ya viene aquel a quien ustedes tanto desean, el mensajero del pacto».

¿Quién será capaz de resistir cuando él llegue? ¿Quién podrá permanecer de pie frente a él cuando aparezca? Porque él es como el fuego que se usa para purificar la plata, y como el jabón fuerte que se usa para lavar. Él purificará a los hijos de Leví como se purifica la plata. Los limpiará como se limpia el oro y la plata. Luego, ellos serán sacerdotes del SEÑOR y le presentarán ofrendas aceptables. Entonces, el SEÑOR aceptará las ofrendas de Judá y Jerusalén, tal como lo hacía tiempo atrás, en el pasado.

«Yo los acusaré a ustedes en juicio y daré mi rápido testimonio en contra de quienes practican la brujería, los que cometen adulterio, los que mienten en los tribunales, los que les roban su salario a los trabajadores, los que explotan a las viudas y a los huérfanos, y los que violan los derechos de los inmigrantes. Toda esa gente que me falta al respeto». Lo dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso.

Robar a Dios

«Yo soy el SEÑOR y nunca cambio; y ustedes siguen siendo hijos de Jacob. Pero me han desobedecido desde los días de sus antepasados. Regresen a mí y yo regresaré a ustedes». Lo dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso.

«Ustedes preguntan: “¿Cómo que hemos de regresar a Dios?” ¿Acaso puede el ser humano robar a Dios? ¡Pues ustedes me están robando! Y todavía preguntan: “¿En qué le hemos robado?” ¡En los diezmos y en las ofrendas! La nación entera me está robando y por eso cae una maldición sobre todos ustedes».

10 El SEÑOR Todopoderoso dice: «Traigan todos los diezmos al granero del templo y así habrá alimentos en mi casa. Pónganme a prueba en esto y vean si no abro las ventanas del cielo para derramar sobre ustedes una lluvia de bendiciones hasta que les sobre de todo. 11 Alejaré las plagas de sus campos para que no destruyan sus cultivos y para que sus viñas produzcan fruto». Lo dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso.

12 «Todas las naciones hablarán bien de ustedes, porque ustedes tendrán un país hermoso». Lo dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso.

13 El SEÑOR dice: «Ustedes han hablado muy mal de mí y luego preguntan: “¿Qué es lo malo que hemos dicho?” 14 Lo malo que han dicho es que no sirve de nada adorar a Dios. Ustedes han dicho: “¿Qué hemos ganado con servir a Dios, con andar como de luto ante el SEÑOR Todopoderoso?” 15 Ustedes dicen que los soberbios son bendecidos, que les va bien a los que hacen el mal y que no les pasa nada a los que desafían a Dios».

16 Los que respetaban al SEÑOR hablaron de esto unos a otros, y el SEÑOR los escuchó atentamente. Entonces hizo escribir un libro recordatorio donde estaban los nombres de aquellos que respetan al SEÑOR y honran su nombre. 17 El SEÑOR Todopoderoso dice: «El día que tengo señalado, ellos serán mi tesoro. Tendré compasión de ellos como el papá con el hijo que lo obedece. 18 Ustedes volverán a notar la diferencia que hay entre la gente buena y la gente mala, entre el que sirve a Dios y el que no lo hace».

“I will send my messenger,(A) who will prepare the way before me.(B) Then suddenly the Lord(C) you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant,(D) whom you desire,(E) will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

But who can endure(F) the day of his coming?(G) Who can stand(H) when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire(I) or a launderer’s soap.(J) He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;(K) he will purify(L) the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.(M) Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,(N) and the offerings(O) of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.(P)

“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers,(Q) adulterers(R) and perjurers,(S) against those who defraud laborers of their wages,(T) who oppress the widows(U) and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners(V) among you of justice, but do not fear(W) me,” says the Lord Almighty.

Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes

“I the Lord do not change.(X) So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.(Y) Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away(Z) from my decrees and have not kept them. Return(AA) to me, and I will return to you,”(AB) says the Lord Almighty.

“But you ask,(AC) ‘How are we to return?’

“Will a mere mortal rob(AD) God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes(AE) and offerings. You are under a curse(AF)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(AG) into the storehouse,(AH) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(AI) of heaven and pour out(AJ) so much blessing(AK) that there will not be room enough to store it.(AL) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(AM) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(AO) for yours will be a delightful land,”(AP) says the Lord Almighty.(AQ)

Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God

13 “You have spoken arrogantly(AR) against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask,(AS) ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(AT) to serve(AU) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(AV) and going about like mourners(AW) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(AX) blessed. Certainly evildoers(AY) prosper,(AZ) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

The Faithful Remnant

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(BA) A scroll(BB) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(BC) the Lord and honored his name.

17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(BD) treasured possession.(BE) I will spare(BF) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(BG) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(BH) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(BI)

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.

For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.

13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?

14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?

15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

16 Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.

17 And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

“I am about to send my messenger,[a] who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the Lord[b] you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messenger[c] of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can keep standing when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire,[d] like a launderer’s soap. He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the Lord a proper offering. The offerings[e] of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in former times and years past.

“I[f] will come to you in judgment. I will be quick to testify against those who practice divination; those who commit adultery; those who break promises;[g] and those who exploit workers, widows, and orphans,[h] who refuse to help[i] the resident foreigner[j] and in this way show they do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Resistance to the Lord through Selfishness

“Since, I, the Lord, do not go back on my promises,[k] you, sons of Jacob, have not perished. From the days of your ancestors you have ignored[l] my commandments[m] and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “But you say, ‘How should we return?’ Can a person rob[n] God? You are indeed robbing me, but you say, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and contributions![o] You are bound for judgment[p] because you are robbing me—this whole nation is guilty.[q]

10 “Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse[r] so that there may be food in my temple. Test me in this matter,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “to see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out blessing for you until there is no room for it all. 11 Then I will stop the plague[s] from ruining your crops,[t] and the vine will not lose its fruit before harvest,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 12 “All nations will call you blessed, for you indeed will live in[u] a delightful land,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Resistance to the Lord through Self-sufficiency

13 “You have criticized me sharply,”[v] says the Lord, “but you ask, ‘How have we criticized you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped[w] by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord of Heaven’s Armies?[x] 15 So now we consider the arrogant to be blessed; indeed, those who practice evil are successful.[y] In fact, those who challenge[z] God escape!’”

16 Then those who respected[aa] the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord took notice.[ab] A scroll[ac] was prepared before him in which were recorded the names of those who respected the Lord and honored his name. 17 “They will belong to me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “in the day when I prepare my own special property.[ad] I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you will see that I make a distinction between[ae] the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not.

  1. Malachi 3:1 tn In Hebrew the phrase “my messenger” is מַלְאָכִי (malʾakhi), the same form as the prophet’s name (see note on the name “Malachi” in 1:1). However, here the messenger appears to be an eschatological figure who is about to appear, as the following context suggests. According to 4:5, this messenger is “Elijah the prophet,” whom the NT identifies as John the Baptist (Matt 11:10; Mark 1:2) because he came in the “spirit and power” of Elijah (Matt 11:14; 17:11-12; Lk 1:17).
