3 万军之耶和华说：“我要差遣我的使者为我开路。你们所寻求的主必突然来到祂的殿中。你们所期盼的那位立约的使者快要来了！” 2 然而，祂来临的日子，谁能承受得了呢？祂出现的时候，谁能站立得住呢？因为祂像炼金之火，又像漂白衣裳的碱。 3 祂要坐下来，像炼净银子的人那样洁净利未的子孙，像熬炼金银一样熬炼他们，使他们凭公义向耶和华献祭。 4 这样，犹大和耶路撒冷所献的祭物就会蒙耶和华悦纳，如同以往的日子、从前的岁月。
5 万军之耶和华说：“我要来到你们当中施行审判，速速作证指控那些行邪术的、通奸的、起假誓的、克扣工人薪水的、欺压寡妇孤儿的、冤枉异乡人的，以及不敬畏我的。

6 “我耶和华永恒不变，所以你们这些雅各的子孙才没有灭绝。” 7 万军之耶和华说：“从你们祖先开始，你们就常常偏离我的律例，不肯遵从。现在你们要转向我，我就转向你们。可是你们竟然说，‘我们怎么转向你呢？’ 8 人怎可抢夺上帝的东西呢？可是你们不但抢夺我的东西，还说，‘我们在何事上抢过你的东西呢？’
“你们在十分之一的奉献和其他供物上抢夺我的东西。 9 举国上下都是如此，所以你们必受咒诅。” 10 万军之耶和华说：“你们要把当纳的十分之一全部送到我的仓库，使我的殿中有粮。你们这样试试，看我会不会为你们打开天上的窗户，把祝福倾倒给你们，直到无处可容。” 11 万军之耶和华说：“我必为你们驱除害虫，不许它们毁坏你们地里的出产，你们田间的葡萄必不会未熟先落。” 12 万军之耶和华说：“万国必称你们为有福的，因为这地方必成为一片乐土。”
13 耶和华说：“你们出言毁谤我，还问，‘我们怎么毁谤你了？’ 14 你们说，‘事奉上帝是虚空的。遵从上帝的吩咐，在万军之耶和华面前痛悔有什么益处？ 15 如今我们称狂傲的人有福，因为作恶的人凡事顺利，他们虽然试探上帝，却仍能逃过灾祸。’”

3 ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ: “ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੂਤ ਭੇਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਰਾਹ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰੇ। ਤਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਹੋ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਨਵੇਂ ਨੇਮ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

6 “ਮੈਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬਦਲਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਯਾਕੂਬ ਦੀ ਔਲਾਦ ਹੋ, ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਤਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ। 7 ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਬਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬੇਮੁੱਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੀਕ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਪੁਰਖਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਿਵਸਬਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਕਰਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਪਰਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵੱਲ ਮੁੜਾਂਗਾ।” ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਉਂ ਆਖਿਆ,
“ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਖਦੇ ਹੋ, ‘ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਤ ਸੱਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ?’
8 “ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਚੋ ਠੱਗਣਾ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਚੋ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੁਰਾਉਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ, ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਠੱਗੀ ਕੀਤੀ।
“ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ‘ਭਲਾ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ?’
“ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਸਵੰਧ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਖਾਸ ਤੋਹਫ਼ੇ ਭੇਟ ਕਰਨੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। 9 ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੌਮ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਠੱਗੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਤੇ ਸੰਕਟ ਹਾਵੀ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।” ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਇਉਂ ਫ਼ੁਰਮਾਇਆ।
10 ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਇਸ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰੋ। ਆਪਣਾ ਦਸਵੰਧ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਰਪਣ ਕਰੋ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਵੋ। ਮੇਰੇ ਭਵਨ ਲਈ ਭੋਜਨ ਲਿਆਓ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਜ਼ਮਾਅ ਲਵੋ। ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੇ ਚੱਲੋਂਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਵਰਦਾਨ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਫ਼ਿਰ ਬਰਕਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਵਰਦੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਾਂਗ ਆਉਣਗੀਆਂ। ਹਰ ਵਸਤੂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਲੋੜ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ। 11 ਮੈਂ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਅੰਗੂਰੀ ਬਾਗ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਢੇਰਾਂ ਅੰਗੂਰ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।” ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਇਉਂ ਫ਼ੁਰਮਾਇਆ।
12 “ਦੂਜੀਆਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਤੀਰਾ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਦੇਸ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਕਮਾਲ ਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।” ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ।
ਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਾਸ ਸਮਾਂ
13 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਮੀਨੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ।”
ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਭਲਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਮੀਨੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ?”
14 ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਫ਼ਿਜ਼ੂਲ ਹੈ। ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਅਸੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਫਾਇਦਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਕਾਰਣ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਲੋਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਕੀਰਨੇ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਸੀਂ ਵੈਣ ਪਾਏ ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ। 15 ਹੁਣ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਘਮਂਡੀ ਲੋਕ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਦ ਲੋਕ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਸਬਰ ਦਾ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਬਦੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੰਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ।”
16 ਤਦ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਕੇ ਸੁਣੀਆਂ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਵੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੋਥੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਉਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
17 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋਵਾਂਗਾ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਬੜੇ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਬੜਾ ਦਯਾਲੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੂ ਹੋਵਾਂਗਾ। 18 ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲੋਕ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਪਰਤੋਂਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਦੀ ਵਿੱਚਲਾ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਜਾਣ ਜਾਵੋਂਗੇ। ਫ਼ਿਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚਲਾ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਸਮਝ ਜਾਵੋਂਗੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ।

Chapter 3
The Messenger of the Covenant
1 (A)Now I am sending my messenger—
he will prepare the way before me;[a]
And the lord whom you seek will come suddenly to his temple;
The messenger of the covenant whom you desire—
see, he is coming! says the Lord of hosts.
2 But who can endure the day of his coming?
Who can stand firm when he appears?
For he will be like a refiner’s fire,
like fullers’ lye.
3 (B)He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the Levites,
Refining them like gold or silver,
that they may bring offerings to the Lord in righteousness.
4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the Lord,
as in ancient days, as in years gone by.
5 I will draw near to you for judgment,
and I will be swift to bear witness
Against sorcerers, adulterers, and perjurers,
those who deprive a laborer of wages,
Oppress a widow or an orphan,
or turn aside a resident alien,
without fearing me, says the Lord of hosts.
Gifts for God, Blessings for the People
6 For I, the Lord, do not change,[b]
and you, sons of Jacob, do not cease to be.
7 (C)Since the days of your ancestors you have turned aside
from my statutes and have not kept them.
Return to me, that I may return to you,
says the Lord of hosts.
But you say, “Why should we return?”
8 (D)Can anyone rob God? But you are robbing me!
And you say, “How have we robbed you?”
Of tithes and contributions!
9 You are indeed accursed,
for you, the whole nation, rob me.
10 (E)Bring the whole tithe
into the storehouse,[c]
That there may be food in my house.
Put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts,
And see if I do not open the floodgates of heaven for you,
and pour down upon you blessing without measure!
11 I will rebuke the locust for you
so that it will not destroy your crops,
And the vine in the field will not be barren,
says the Lord of hosts.
12 (F)All the nations will call you blessed,
for you will be a delightful land,
says the Lord of hosts.
The Need to Serve God
13 Your words are too much for me, says the Lord.
You ask, “What have we spoken against you?”
14 (G)You have said, “It is useless to serve God;
what do we gain by observing God’s requirements,
And by going about as mourners[d]
before the Lord of hosts?
15 But we call the arrogant blessed;
for evildoers not only prosper
but even test God and escape.”
16 (H)Then those who fear the Lord spoke with one another,
and the Lord listened attentively;
A record book[e] was written before him
of those who fear the Lord and esteem his name.
17 (I)They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts,
my own special possession, on the day when I take action.
And I will have compassion on them,
as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.
18 Then you will again distinguish
between the just and the wicked,
Between the person who serves God,
and the one who does not.
19 (J)For the day is coming, blazing like an oven,
when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble,
And the day that is coming will set them on fire,
leaving them neither root nor branch,
says the Lord of hosts.
20 (K)But for you who fear my name, the sun of justice
will arise with healing in its wings;[f]
And you will go out leaping like calves from the stall
21 and tread down the wicked;
They will become dust under the soles of your feet,
on the day when I take action, says the Lord of hosts.
Moses and Elijah
22 (L)Remember the law of Moses my servant,
whom I charged at Horeb
With statutes and ordinances
for all Israel.
23 (M)Now I am sending to you
Elijah[g] the prophet,
Before the day of the Lord comes,
the great and terrible day;
24 He will turn the heart of fathers to their sons,
and the heart of sons to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike
the land with utter destruction.

- 3:1 My messenger…before me: Mt 11:10 applies these words to John the Baptist; Mt 11:14 further identifies John as Elijah (see Mal 3:23). Some take God’s messenger in v. 1a to be a person distinct from “the lord” and “the messenger of the covenant” in v. 1b; others hold that they are one and the same person. Some consider “the lord” and “the messenger of the covenant” to be divine, while others hold that in the text’s literal sense he is a messianic earthly ruler.
- 3:6–7 Not change: God remains faithful to the covenant even when the human partners break it.

- 3:20 Wings: a common symbol of the manifestation of a god in the ancient Near East is the winged sun disk found, for example, on premonarchic jar handles. Cf. Nm 6:25; Ps 4:7; 31:17; 34:6; 84:12.
- 3:23 Elijah: taken up in a whirlwind, according to 2 Kgs 2:11. Here his return seems to be foretold. A Jewish tradition interpreted this literally; the gospels saw Elijah in the person of John the Baptist (Mt 11:13–14; 17:10–13; Mk 9:9–13).

3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.
4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.
6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.
13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?
14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?
15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
16 Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.
17 And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
