Inleiding
1 Dit is wat Maleachi van God tegen het volk Israël moest zeggen.
Gods liefde voor het volk Israël
2 "De Heer zegt: Ik houd van jullie. Maar jullie vragen Mij: 'Waaraan kunnen we dat zien?' Mijn antwoord is: Ezau was toch de broer van Jakob? Toch hield Ik wel van Jakob, maar niet van Ezau. 3 Daarom heb Ik zijn bergen veranderd in een wildernis. Zijn land heb Ik gegeven aan de jakhalzen die in de woestijn leven. 4 Edom[a] zegt wel: 'Ons land is wel verwoest, maar we zullen de puinhopen weer opbouwen.' Maar Ik zeg: Wat zij opbouwen, zal Ik weer afbreken. Hun land zal 'Godverlaten' heten en hun volk zal 'Voor eeuwig vervloekt' genoemd worden.
5 Als jullie dat zien gebeuren, zullen jullie zeggen: 'God is een machtig God. Ook buiten de grenzen van Israël moet Hij geprezen worden!' "
Israël heeft geen ontzag voor God
6 De Heer zegt: "De Heer van de hemelse legers zegt: Een zoon moet respect hebben voor zijn vader. En een knecht moet ontzag hebben voor zijn heer. Als Ik jullie Vader ben, waar is dan jullie respect voor Mij? En als Ik jullie Heer ben, waar is dan jullie ontzag voor Mij? Priesters, Ik heb het tegen júllie! Jullie hebben geen enkel ontzag voor Mij. En dan durven jullie te vragen: 'Waarom vindt U dat wij geen ontzag voor U hebben?' 7 Omdat jullie slechte offers op mijn altaar brengen. Jullie vragen Mij: 'Wat is er dan slecht aan die offers?' Jullie offers zijn slecht, omdat jullie ze niet belangrijk vinden. 8 Jullie offeren blinde dieren en vinden dat niet erg. Jullie offeren kreupele en zieke dieren[b] en zeggen: 'Dat geeft niets!' Durf zulke dieren eens aan jullie koning aan te bieden! Zou hij daar blij mee zijn? Zou hij iets voor jullie willen doen? zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. 9 Jullie smeken Mij om goed voor jullie te zijn. Maar als jullie zulke dingen doen, zou Ik dan iets voor jullie willen doen? zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers.
10 Jullie kunnen de tempel maar beter sluiten. Dan brengen jullie tenminste ook geen zinloze offers meer. Want Ik ben niet blij met jullie en Ik ben niet blij met jullie offers. Ik hoef ze niet, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers.
11 Over de hele wereld, van oost tot west, zal Ik aanbeden worden. Over de hele wereld zullen de mensen met ontzag wierook-offers en meel-offers aan Mij brengen. Want Ik zal door alle andere volken geprezen worden, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. 12 Maar júllie eren Mij niet. Jullie vinden mijn offers niet belangrijk. Jullie durven Mij waardeloze offers aan te bieden. 13 Jullie vinden het allemaal te veel moeite. Jullie hebben er geen zin in, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. Daarom brengen jullie gestolen, kreupele en zieke dieren. En meel-offers van gestolen of slecht graan. Zou Ik blij zijn met zulke offers? zegt de Heer. 14 Jullie bedriegen Mij zelfs. Want jullie beloven Mij wel een goed en gezond dier uit jullie kudde, maar dan komen jullie met een ziek dier. Mensen die zulke dingen doen, zijn vervloekt! Want Ik ben een machtig Koning, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. Alle volken hebben ontzag voor Mij."

- Maleachi 1:4 Edom is een andere naam van Ezau (Lees Genesis 25:27-26 en Genesis 36:1). Ezau was de tweelingbroer van Jakob. Uit Ezau is het volk Edom ontstaan. Jakob kreeg later de naam Israël. Uit hem ontstond het volk Israël.

1 以下是耶和華藉瑪拉基對以色列人的宣告。
耶和華愛以色列
2 耶和華說：「我曾愛你們。」你們卻說：「你在何事上愛我們呢？」耶和華說：「以掃不是雅各的哥哥嗎？但我卻愛雅各， 3 厭惡以掃。我使以掃的山嶺荒涼，把他的地業留給曠野的豺狼。」 4 也許以掃的後代以東人會說：「我們現在雖然被毀，但我們要重建毀壞之處。」萬軍之耶和華卻這樣說：「他們儘管建造，但我必拆毀。他們的土地要被稱為『罪惡之地』，他們要被稱為『耶和華永遠惱怒之民。』」 5 以色列人啊，你們必親眼看見這事，也必說：「願耶和華在以色列境外受尊崇！」
斥責祭司
6 萬軍之耶和華對祭司說：「兒子應當尊敬父親，僕人應當敬畏主人。我是你們的父親，但你們對我的尊敬在哪裡呢？我是你們的主人，但你們對我的敬畏在哪裡呢？你們藐視我的名，卻狡辯說，『我們在何事上藐視過你的名呢？』 7 你們把污穢的食物獻在我的祭壇上，還說，『我們在何事上玷污了你呢？』你們說耶和華的桌子是可藐視的。 8 你們拿瞎眼、瘸腿和有病的牲畜來獻祭，難道這不是罪過嗎？你試試把這樣的東西送給你的省長，看他會不會悅納你、恩待你。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。」
9 現在，你們祈求上帝向我們施恩吧！然而，你們獻上這樣的祭物，祂怎會垂聽你們的祈求呢？ 10 萬軍之耶和華說：「我真希望你們當中有人把殿門關上，免得你們在我祭壇上枉然點火。因為我不喜悅你們，也不接納你們的祭物。」 11 萬軍之耶和華說：「從日出之地到日落之處，列國必尊崇我的名。世上每個角落都有人向我焚香，獻上潔淨的供物。因為我的名必受列國尊崇。 12 可是，你們卻褻瀆我的名，竟然說我的桌子是污穢的，上面的祭物是可藐視的。 13 你們不屑地說，『哼！這些事真麻煩！』這是萬軍之耶和華說的。你們把搶來的、瘸腿的、有病的獻給我，我豈能接納呢？這是耶和華說的。 14 許願時說要獻上羊群中的公羊，後來卻拿傷殘的來獻給主，這種人該受咒詛！因為我是大君王，就是外族人也敬畏我的名。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。」

1 A revelation, Yahweh’s[a] word to Israel by Malachi.
2 “I have loved you,” says Yahweh.
Yet you say, “How have you loved us?”
“Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” says Yahweh, “Yet I loved Jacob; 3 but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.” 4 Whereas Edom says, “We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places,” Yahweh of Armies says, “They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them ‘The Wicked Land,’ even the people against whom Yahweh shows wrath forever.”
5 Your eyes will see, and you will say, “Yahweh is great—even beyond the border of Israel!”
6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says Yahweh of Armies to you priests who despise my name. “You say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 You offer polluted bread on my altar. You say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ In that you say, ‘Yahweh’s table is contemptible.’ 8 When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn’t that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn’t that evil? Present it now to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?” says Yahweh of Armies.
9 “Now, please entreat the favor of God,[b] that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?” says Yahweh of Armies.
10 “Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you,” says Yahweh of Armies, “neither will I accept an offering at your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun even to its going down, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations,” says Yahweh of Armies. 12 “But you profane it when you say, ‘Yahweh’s table is polluted, and its fruit, even its food, is contemptible.’ 13 You say also, ‘Behold,[c] what a weariness it is!’ And you have sniffed at it”, says Yahweh of Armies; “and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this at your hand?” says Yahweh.
14 “But the deceiver is cursed who has in his flock a male, and vows and sacrifices to the Lord[d] a defective thing; for I am a great King,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and my name is awesome among the nations.”

1 A prophecy:(A) The word(B) of the Lord to Israel through Malachi.[a]
Israel Doubts God’s Love
2 “I have loved(C) you,” says the Lord.
“But you ask,(D) ‘How have you loved us?’
“Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob,(E) 3 but Esau I have hated,(F) and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland(G) and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.(H)”
4 Edom(I) may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild(J) the ruins.”
But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish.(K) They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.(L) 5 You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great(M) is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!’(N)
Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices
6 “A son honors his father,(O) and a slave his master.(P) If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect(Q) due me?” says the Lord Almighty.(R)
“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.
“But you ask,(S) ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’
7 “By offering defiled food(T) on my altar.
“But you ask,(U) ‘How have we defiled you?’
“By saying that the Lord’s table(V) is contemptible. 8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals,(W) is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased(X) with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.(Y)
9 “Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings(Z) from your hands, will he accept(AA) you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10 “Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors,(AB) so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased(AC) with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept(AD) no offering(AE) from your hands. 11 My name will be great(AF) among the nations,(AG) from where the sun rises to where it sets.(AH) In every place incense(AI) and pure offerings(AJ) will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.
12 “But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table(AK) is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food(AL) is contemptible.’ 13 And you say, ‘What a burden!’(AM) and you sniff at it contemptuously,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty.
“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices,(AO) should I accept them from your hands?”(AP) says the Lord. 14 “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal(AQ) to the Lord. For I am a great king,(AR)” says the Lord Almighty,(AS) “and my name is to be feared(AT) among the nations.(AU)
