Chiến tranh với dân Ca-na-an
21 Khi vua của A-rát, người Ca-na-an sống ở vùng miền nam, nghe rằng dân Ít-ra-en đang trên đường đến A-tha-rim thì tấn công dân Ít-ra-en và bắt được một vài người. 2 Dân Ít-ra-en liền khấn hứa cùng CHÚA như sau: “Nếu Ngài giúp chúng con đánh thắng dân nầy, chúng con sẽ hoàn toàn tiêu diệt các thành của chúng.”
3 CHÚA nhận lời cầu xin của dân Ít-ra-en và cho họ đánh bại dân Ca-na-an. Dân Ít-ra-en tận diệt người Ca-na-an và các thành của họ, nên chỗ đó gọi là Họt-ma [a].
Con rắn bằng đồng
4 Dân Ít-ra-en rời núi Hô-rơ đi trên đường về hướng Biển Sậy [b] để đi vòng quanh xứ Ê-đôm. Nhưng dọc đường dân chúng bất bình 5 và ta thán cùng Thượng Đế và Mô-se. Họ kêu ca, “Tại sao ông mang chúng tôi ra khỏi Ai-cập để chết trong sa mạc nầy? Không có bánh mì và nước. Chúng tôi đã ngấy món ăn nầy rồi!”
6 CHÚA liền sai các rắn độc đến cắn dân chúng, khiến cho nhiều người Ít-ra-en bị chết. 7 Dân chúng đến nói với Mô-se, “Chúng tôi đã phạm tội khi ta thán về ông và CHÚA. Xin ông hãy cầu nguyện để CHÚA khiến các con rắn lìa xa chúng tôi.”
8 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, “Hãy làm một con rắn bằng đồng treo lên một cây sào. Ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn nó thì sẽ sống.” 9 Vậy Mô-se làm một con rắn đồng treo lên một cây sào. Ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn con rắn đồng nầy thì được sống.
Cuộc hành trình đến Mô-áp
10 Dân Ít-ra-en ra đi và cắm trại tại Ô-bốt. 11 Họ đi từ Ô-bốt tới Y-giê A-ba-rim trong sa mạc gần xứ Mô-áp. 12 Từ đó họ đi nữa và cắm trại trong thung lũng Xê-rết. 13 Từ đó họ đi và cắm trại ngang sông Ạc-nôn, trong sa mạc bắt đầu từ lãnh thổ A-mô-rít. Suối Ạc-nôn là ranh giới giữa dân Mô-áp và dân A-mô-rít. 14 Vì thế mà trong sách Chiến Tranh của CHÚA có viết:
“… và Qua-hếp trong Xu-pha, các trũng sâu, sông Ạc-nôn, 15 cùng các phụ lưu dẫn đến vùng có dân cư A-rơ. Đó là những nơi nằm trên biên giới Mô-áp.”
16 Dân Ít-ra-en đi từ đó đến Bê-e [c]; ở đó có một cái giếng nơi CHÚA bảo Mô-se, “Hãy tập họp dân chúng lại ta sẽ cho họ nước uống.” 17 Rồi dân Ít-ra-en ca bài nầy:
“Giếng ơi, hãy phun nước lên!
Hãy ca hát lên cho nước.
18 Các quan trưởng đã đào giếng nầy.
Các nhà quyền quí đã xây nó.
Bằng các cây phủ việt và cây sào mình.
Đó là món quà trong sa mạc [d].”
19 Từ Mát-ta-na họ đi đến Na-ha-liên và tiếp tục đi đến Ba-mốt. 20 Từ Ba-mốt họ đi đến thung lũng Mô-áp mà từ đỉnh núi Phích-ga có thể nhìn thấy cả vùng sa mạc.
Dân Ít-ra-en giết hai vua Xi-hôn và Óc
21 Dân Ít-ra-en sai sứ đến Xi-hôn, vua A-mô-rít nói rằng, 22 “Xin vua cho phép chúng tôi đi ngang qua xứ vua. Chúng tôi sẽ không đi qua ruộng nương, vườn nho, hay uống nước giếng. Chúng tôi chỉ đi trên đường cái của vua cho đến chừng băng qua khỏi xứ vua.”
23 Nhưng vua Xi-hôn không cho phép dân Ít-ra-en băng qua xứ mình. Ông tập họp toàn thể binh đội lại và dàn trận đối đầu với dân Ít-ra-en trong sa mạc. Họ đánh nhau với dân Ít-ra-en tại Gia-hát.
24 Dân Ít-ra-en giết vua, chiếm xứ người từ sông Ạc-nôn cho đến sông Gia-bốc. Họ chiếm toàn xứ cho đến ranh giới dân Am-môn là xứ được bảo vệ rất vững chắc. 25 Dân Ít-ra-en cũng chiếm các thành dân A-mô-rít, lấy Hết-bôn và các thị trấn quanh đó. 26 Hết-bôn là thành nơi Xi-hôn, vua dân A-mô-rít, đóng đô. Trước kia vua đã từng giao chiến với vua Mô-áp và chiếm toàn xứ đến sông Ạc-nôn. 27 Vì thế mà các thi sĩ đã viết:
“Hãy đến xây lại thành Hết-bôn;
hãy tái thiết thành Xi-hôn.
28 Một ngọn lửa bắt cháy từ Hết-bôn;
các ngọn lửa bùng phát ra từ thành Xi-hôn.
Cơn hỏa hoạn đó tiêu hủy A-rơ của xứ Mô-áp
và đốt tiêu vùng cao nguyên Ạc-nôn.
29 Khốn cho ngươi, Mô-áp ơi!
Dân cư Kê-mốt bị tàn lụi rồi.
Các con trai nó bỏ chạy,
còn các con gái nó bị Xi-hôn, vua A-mô-rít bắt đi.
30 Nhưng chúng ta đã đánh bại các dân A-mô-rít đó.
Chúng ta tiêu diệt thành trì chúng từ Hết-bôn cho đến Đi-bôn,
Chúng ta tận diệt chúng cho đến Nô-pha, gần Mê-đê-ba.”
31 Vậy dân Ít-ra-en vào định cư trong xứ dân A-mô-rít.
32 Sau khi Mô-se sai các tay do thám đến thành Gia-xe, họ chiếm các thị trấn xung quanh và đánh đuổi dân A-mô-rít ở đó đi.
33 Rồi dân Ít-ra-en đi lên đường về phía Ba-san. Óc, vua của Ba-san kéo đại binh ra đón dân Ít-ra-en và hai bên chạm trán nhau tại Ết-rê-i.
34 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, “Đừng sợ vua đó. Ta sẽ trao nó, toàn đạo binh, và xứ nó vào tay các con. Hãy xử nó như các con đã xử Xi-hôn, vua A-mô-rít ở Hết-bôn.”
35 Vậy dân Ít-ra-en giết Óc, các con trai vua và toàn đạo binh vua; không chừa một ai, rồi chiếm xứ đó.

Arad Destroyed
21 When the Canaanite king of Arad,(A) who lived in the Negev,(B) heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2 Then Israel made this vow(C) to the Lord: “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy[a](D) their cities.” 3 The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites(E) over to them. They completely destroyed them(F) and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.[b](G)
The Bronze Snake
4 They traveled from Mount Hor(H) along the route to the Red Sea,[c](I) to go around Edom.(J) But the people grew impatient on the way;(K) 5 they spoke against God(L) and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt(M) to die in the wilderness?(N) There is no bread! There is no water!(O) And we detest this miserable food!”(P)
6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes(Q) among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.(R) 7 The people came to Moses(S) and said, “We sinned(T) when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord(U) will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed(V) for the people.
8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole;(W) anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake(X) and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.(Y)
The Journey to Moab
10 The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth.(Z) 11 Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab(AA) toward the sunrise. 12 From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley.(AB) 13 They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon(AC), which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.(AD) 14 That is why the Book of the Wars(AE) of the Lord says:
“. . . Zahab[d] in Suphah and the ravines,
the Arnon 15 and[e] the slopes of the ravines
that lead to the settlement of Ar(AF)
and lie along the border of Moab.”
16 From there they continued on to Beer,(AG) the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together and I will give them water.”
17 Then Israel sang this song:(AH)
“Spring up, O well!
Sing about it,
18 about the well that the princes dug,
that the nobles of the people sank—
the nobles with scepters and staffs.”
Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah(AI) overlooks the wasteland.
Defeat of Sihon and Og
21 Israel sent messengers(AJ) to say to Sihon(AK) king of the Amorites:(AL)
22 “Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.(AM)”
23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory.(AN) He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz,(AO) he fought with Israel.(AP) 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword(AQ) and took over his land(AR) from the Arnon to the Jabbok,(AS) but only as far as the Ammonites,(AT) because their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites(AU) and occupied them,(AV) including Heshbon(AW) and all its surrounding settlements. 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon(AX) king of the Amorites,(AY) who had fought against the former king of Moab(AZ) and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.(BA)
27 That is why the poets say:
“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
let Sihon’s city be restored.
28 “Fire went out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the city of Sihon.(BB)
It consumed(BC) Ar(BD) of Moab,
the citizens of Arnon’s heights.(BE)
29 Woe to you, Moab!(BF)
You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!(BG)
He has given up his sons as fugitives(BH)
and his daughters as captives(BI)
to Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 “But we have overthrown them;
Heshbon’s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.(BJ)
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
which extends to Medeba.(BK)”
31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.(BL)
32 After Moses had sent spies(BM) to Jazer,(BN) the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan(BO),(BP) and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.(BQ)
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.(BR)”
35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors.(BS) And they took possession of his land.(BT)
