摩押王巴勒召巴兰
22 以色列人起行，在摩押平原安营，就是在约旦河东边，耶利哥的对面。
2 以色列人向亚摩利人所行的一切事，西拨的儿子巴勒都看见了。 3 摩押人十分惧怕这民，因为他们众多；摩押人因以色列人的缘故，十分恐慌。 4 摩押人对米甸的长老说：“现在这群人要吞并我们四周的一切，好象牛吞吃田间的草一样。”那时西拨的儿子巴勒，作摩押王； 5 他就派使者到比珥的儿子巴兰那里去，就是到大河附近的毘夺，亚扪人的地那里，去叫巴兰来，说：“你看，有一个民族从埃及出来，遮满了全地，如今住在我的对面。 6 现在请你来，替我咒诅这民，因为他们比我强盛，或者我能够击败他们，把他们从这地赶出去；因为我知道你给谁祝福，谁就得福；你咒诅谁，谁就受咒诅。”
7 摩押的长老和米甸的长老，手里带着占卜的礼金去了；他们到了巴兰那里，把巴勒的话告诉他。 8 巴兰对他们说：“今夜你们留在这里，我必照着耶和华吩咐我的话答复你们。”于是，摩押的领袖就与巴兰同住。 9 神来到巴兰那里，说：“与你在一起的这些人是谁？” 10 巴兰对 神说：“是摩押王西拨的儿子巴勒派到我这里来的人，他们说： 11 ‘你看，从埃及出来的民族，遮满了全地；现在请你来，替我咒诅他们，或者我能够战胜他们，把他们赶走。’” 12 神对巴兰说：“你不可与他们同去，也不可咒诅那民，因为他们是蒙福的。” 13 巴兰早晨起来，对巴勒的领袖说：“你们回本地去吧，因为耶和华不准我与你们同去。” 14 摩押的领袖起来，回到巴勒那里，说：“巴兰不肯与我们同来。”
15 于是，巴勒又派比先前更多、更尊贵的领袖去， 16 他们来到巴兰那里，对他说：“西拨的儿子巴勒这样说：‘求你不要推辞不到我这里来， 17 因为我必使你大得尊荣；你向我说甚么，我都照办；只求你替我咒诅这民。’” 18 巴兰回答巴勒的臣仆说：“巴勒就算把他满屋的金银给我，但我不论作大事小事，也不能越过耶和华我 神的命令。 19 现在请你们今夜也住在这里，等我得知耶和华还要向我说甚么。” 20 当夜， 神来到巴兰那里，对他说：“这些人既然来请你，你就起程与他们同去，但是你只要遵行我吩咐你的事。”
天使与巴兰的驴子
21 巴兰早晨起来，备上驴，与摩押的领袖一同去了。 22 神因为巴兰去就发怒；耶和华的使者站在路上敌挡他。那时他骑着驴，有两个仆人同行。 23 驴看见了耶和华的使者站在路上，手里拿着拔出来的刀，就转离正路，走入田中去；巴兰就打驴，要叫牠转回路上。 24 耶和华的使者站在葡萄园间的窄路上，两边都有围墙。 25 驴看见了耶和华的使者，就紧挤在墙上，把巴兰的脚挤伤了，巴兰又打驴。 26 耶和华的使者又往前行，站在狭窄之处，左右都没有转身的地方。 27 驴看见了耶和华的使者，就卧在巴兰身下；巴兰大怒，就用自己的杖打驴。 28 耶和华开了驴的口，驴就对巴兰说：“我向你作了甚么，你竟打我这三次呢？” 29 巴兰对驴说：“因为你作弄我。但愿我手中有刀，现在就把你杀死。” 30 驴对巴兰说：“我不是你从起初一直所骑的驴吗？我曾惯常向你这样行过吗？”巴兰说：“没有。”
责备巴兰
31 那时，耶和华开了巴兰的眼睛，他就看见耶和华的使者站在路上，手里拿着拔出来的刀，巴兰就低头俯伏在地。 32 耶和华的使者对他说：“你为甚么这三次打你的驴呢？看哪，是我来敌挡你，因为你走的路在我面前邪僻。 33 驴看见了我，就三次从我面前转开；驴若是没有从我面前转开，我早已把你杀了，而留牠活着。” 34 巴兰对耶和华的使者说：“我有罪了，我不知道是你站在路上阻挡我；现在你若是不喜欢我去，我就回去。” 35 耶和华的使者对巴兰说：“你与这些人同去吧，但是你只要说我吩咐你的话。”于是巴兰与巴勒的领袖一同去了。
巴勒迎接巴兰
36 巴勒听见巴兰来了，就出去到摩押的京城迎接他；这城是在亚嫩河旁，在边界的尽头。 37 巴勒对巴兰说：“我不是急切地派人到你那里去请你吗？你为甚么不到我这里来呢？难道我不能使你得尊荣吗？” 38 巴兰对巴勒说：“看哪，我已经来到你这里，现在我怎能说甚么呢？ 神把甚么话放在我口里，我就说甚么。” 39 巴兰与巴勒同行，来到基列．胡琐。 40 巴勒宰了牛羊，送给巴兰和与他在一起的领袖。
41 到了早晨，巴勒带着巴兰上了巴力的高冈；巴兰就从那里观看以色列民的边界。

Balac manda llamar a Balán
22 Los israelitas se pusieron otra vez en marcha, y acamparon en las estepas de Moab, al otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
2 Cuando Balac hijo de Zipor se dio cuenta de todo lo que Israel había hecho con los amorreos, 3 los moabitas sintieron mucho miedo de los israelitas. Estaban verdaderamente aterrorizados de ellos, porque eran un ejército muy numeroso.
4 Entonces dijeron los moabitas a los ancianos de Madián: «¡Esta muchedumbre devorará todo lo que hay a nuestro alrededor, como cuando el ganado devora la hierba del campo!»
En aquel tiempo, Balac hijo de Zipor era rey de Moab, 5 así que mandó llamar a Balán hijo de Beor, quien vivía en Petor, a orillas del río Éufrates, en la tierra de los amavitas.[a] Balac mandó a decirle:
«Hay un pueblo que salió de Egipto, y que ahora cubre toda la tierra y ha venido a asentarse cerca de mí. 6 Te ruego que vengas y maldigas por mí a este pueblo, porque es más poderoso que yo. Tal vez así pueda yo vencerlos y echarlos fuera del país. Yo sé que a quien tú bendices, queda bendito, y a quien tú maldices, queda maldito».
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián fueron a darle a Balán el mensaje que Balac le enviaba, y llevaron consigo dinero para pagarle sus conjuros.
8 Balán los invitó a pasar allí la noche, prometiendo comunicarles después lo que el Señor le dijera. Y los gobernantes se alojaron con él.
9 Dios se le apareció a Balán, y le dijo:
―¿Quiénes son estos hombres que se alojan contigo?
10 Balán le respondió:
―Son los mensajeros que envió Balac hijo de Zipor, que es el rey de Moab. Los envió a decirme: 11 “Un pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre ahora toda la tierra. Ven y échales una maldición por mí. Tal vez así pueda yo luchar contra ellos y echarlos fuera de mi territorio”.
12 Pero Dios le dijo a Balán:
―No irás con ellos, ni pronunciarás ninguna maldición sobre los israelitas, porque son un pueblo bendito.
13 Al otro día Balán se levantó y les dijo a los gobernantes enviados por Balac: «Regresad a vuestra tierra, porque el Señor no quiere que yo vaya con vosotros».
14 Los gobernantes moabitas regresaron adonde estaba Balac y le dijeron: «Balán no quiere venir con nosotros».
15 Balac envió entonces a otros gobernantes, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros, 16 quienes fueron y le dijeron a Balán:
―Esto es lo que dice Balac hijo de Zipor:
“No permitas que nada te impida venir a verme, 17 porque yo te recompensaré con creces y haré todo lo que tú me pidas. Te ruego que vengas y maldigas por mí a este pueblo”.
18 Pero Balán le respondió:
―Aunque Balac me diera su palacio lleno de oro y de plata, yo no podría hacer nada grande ni pequeño, sino ajustarme al mandamiento del Señor mi Dios. 19 Vosotros podéis también alojaros aquí esta noche, mientras yo averiguo si el Señor quiere decirme alguna otra cosa.
20 Aquella noche Dios se le apareció a Balán y le dijo: «Ya que estos hombres han venido a llamarte, ve con ellos, pero solo harás lo que yo te ordene».
Balán y su burra
21 Balán se levantó por la mañana, ensilló su burra, y partió con los gobernantes de Moab. 22 Mientras iba con ellos, la ira de Dios se encendió y en el camino el ángel del Señor se hizo presente, dispuesto a no dejarlo pasar. Balán iba montado en su burra, y sus dos criados lo acompañaban. 23 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor en medio del camino, con la espada desenvainada, se apartó del camino para meterse en el campo. Pero Balán la golpeó para hacerla volver al camino.
24 El ángel del Señor se detuvo en un sendero estrecho que estaba entre dos viñas, con cercos de piedra a ambos lados. 25 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor, se arrimó contra la pared, con lo que lastimó el pie de Balán. Entonces Balán volvió a pegarle.
26 El ángel del Señor se les adelantó y se detuvo en un lugar más estrecho, donde ya no había hacia dónde volverse. 27 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor, se echó al suelo con Balán encima. Entonces se encendió la ira de Balán y golpeó a la burra con un palo. 28 Pero el Señor hizo hablar a la burra, y ella le dijo a Balán:
―¿Se puede saber qué te he hecho, para que me hayas pegado tres veces?
29 Balán le respondió:
―¡Te has venido burlando de mí! Si hubiera tenido una espada en la mano, te habría matado de inmediato.
30 La burra le contestó a Balán:
―¿Acaso no soy la burra sobre la que siempre has montado, hasta el día de hoy? ¿Alguna vez te hice algo así?
―No —respondió Balán.
31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balán, y este pudo ver al ángel del Señor en el camino y empuñando la espada. Balán se inclinó entonces y se postró rostro en tierra.
32 El ángel del Señor le preguntó:
―¿Por qué golpeaste tres veces a tu burra? ¿No te das cuenta de que vengo dispuesto a no dejarte pasar porque he visto que tus caminos son malos?[b] 33 Cuando la burra me vio, se apartó de mí tres veces. De no haber sido por ella, tú estarías ya muerto y ella seguiría con vida.
34 Balán le dijo al ángel del Señor:
―He pecado. No me di cuenta de tu presencia en el camino para cerrarme el paso. Ahora bien, como esto te parece mal, voy a regresar.
35 Pero el ángel del Señor le dijo a Balán:
―Ve con ellos, pero limítate a decir solo lo que yo te mande.
Y Balán se fue con los jefes que Balac había enviado.
Balac se encuentra con Balán
36 Cuando Balac se enteró de que Balán venía, salió a recibirlo en una ciudad moabita que está en la frontera del río Arnón. 37 Balac le dijo a Balán:
―¿Acaso no te mandé llamar? ¿Por qué no viniste a mí? ¿Crees que no soy capaz de recompensarte?
38 ―¡Bueno, ya estoy aquí! —contestó Balán—. Solo que no podré decir nada que Dios no ponga en mi boca.
39 De allí se fueron Balán y Balac a Quiriat Jusot. 40 Balac ofreció en sacrificio vacas y ovejas, y las compartió con Balán y los gobernantes que estaban con él. 41 A la mañana siguiente, Balac llevó a Balán a Bamot Baal, desde donde Balán pudo ver parte del campamento israelita.

Balak Summons Balaam
22 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab(A) and camped along the Jordan(B) across from Jericho.(C)
2 Now Balak son of Zippor(D) saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread(E) because of the Israelites.
4 The Moabites(F) said to the elders of Midian,(G) “This horde is going to lick up everything(H) around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.(I)”
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5 sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,(J) who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,(K) in his native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt;(L) they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6 Now come and put a curse(M) on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land.(N) For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
7 The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.(O) When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8 “Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.(P)” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9 God came to Balaam(Q) and asked,(R) “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11 ‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.(S)”
13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14 So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16 They came to Balaam and said:
“This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17 because I will reward you handsomely(T) and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse(U) on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.(V) 19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.(W)”
20 That night God came to Balaam(X) and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”(Y)
Balaam’s Donkey
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry(Z) when he went, and the angel of the Lord(AA) stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword(AB) in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it(AC) to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry(AD) and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,(AE) and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?(AF)”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.(AG)”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”
“No,” he said.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,(AH) and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.[a] 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,(AI) but I would have spared it.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.(AJ) I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”
35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36 When Balak(AK) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon(AL) border, at the edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”
38 “Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”(AM)
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,(AN) and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,(AO) and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.(AP)

2 Now (B)Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And (C)Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to (D)the elders of Midian, “Now this company will [a]lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then (E)he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at (F)Pethor, which is near [b]the River in the land of [c]the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 (G)Therefore please come at once, (H)curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with (I)the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, (J)“Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 (K)Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ”
12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for (L)they are blessed.”
13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”
14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more [d]honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly (M)honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. (N)Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ”
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, (O)“Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, (P)I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also (Q)stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”
20 (R)And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but (S)only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, (T)and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 Now (U)the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. 24 Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again. 26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28 Then the Lord (V)opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have [e]abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, (W)for now I would kill you!”
30 (X)So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever [f]disposed to do this to you?”
And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord (Y)opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out [g]to stand against you, because your way is (Z)perverse[h] before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”
34 And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, (AA)“I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it [i]displeases You, I will turn back.”
35 Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, (AB)but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, (AC)he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, (AD)which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able (AE)to honor you?”
38 And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? (AF)The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.” 39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth. 40 Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
Balaam’s First Prophecy
41 So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the (AG)high places of Baal, that from there he might observe [j]the extent of the people.
