13 耶和華對摩西說： 2 “你要派人窺探我賜給以色列人的迦南地；按著父家所屬的支派，每支派要派一個人，個個都必須是他們的領袖。” 3 摩西就照著耶和華的吩咐，從巴蘭的曠野派他們去了；他們都是以色列人的領袖。 4 以下是他們的名字：屬流本支派的是撒刻的兒子沙母亞。 5 屬西緬支派的是何利的兒子沙法。 6 屬猶大支派的是耶孚尼的兒子迦勒。 7 屬以薩迦支派的是約色的兒子以迦。 8 屬以法蓮支派的是嫩的兒子何西亞。 9 屬便雅憫支派的是拉孚的兒子帕提。 10 屬西布倫支派的是梭底的兒子迦疊。 11 屬約瑟支派的，就是屬瑪拿西支派的，是蘇西的兒子迦底。 12 屬但支派的是基瑪利的兒子亞米利。 13 屬亞設支派的是米迦勒的兒子西帖。 14 屬拿弗他利支派的是瓦縛西的兒子拿比。 15 屬迦得支派的是瑪基的兒子臼利。 16 以上是摩西派去窺探那地的人的名字。摩西稱嫩的兒子何西亞為約書亞。
17 摩西派他們去窺探迦南地，對他們說：“你們要從這裡上南地，然後上山地去。 18 看看那地怎樣，住在那裡的人是強是弱，是多是少； 19 看看他們住的地怎樣，是好是壞；看看他們所住的城鎮怎樣，是營地，還是城堡； 20 看看那地怎樣，是肥沃還是貧瘠，那裡有樹木沒有。你們要壯膽，把那地的果子帶些回來。”那時正是葡萄初熟的時候。
21 他們上去窺探了那地，從尋的曠野到利合，直到哈瑪關口。 22 他們上到南地，到了希伯崙，在那裡有亞衲族人的後裔亞希幔、示篩、撻買。原來希伯崙城比埃及的瑣安城早建七年。
23 他們來到以實各谷，從那裡砍下了一根葡萄枝子，上頭只有一掛葡萄，兩個人用槓抬著回來；他們也帶了些石榴和無花果回來。 24 因為以色列人從那裡砍來的那掛葡萄，所以那地方叫作以實各谷。

25 四十天以後，他們窺探那地完畢，就回來。 26 他們來到了巴蘭曠野的加低斯，見摩西、亞倫和以色列的全體會眾，向摩西、亞倫及全體會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。 27 他們告訴摩西：“我們到了你派我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜的地，這就是那地的果子。 28 只是住在那地的人強壯，城又堅固又十分高大，並且我們在那裡也看見了亞衲族人的後裔。 29 有亞瑪力人住在南地；赫人、耶布斯人、亞摩利人住在山地；迦南人住在海邊和約旦河沿岸。”
30 迦勒在摩西面前使眾人鎮靜，說：“我們立刻上去，佔領那地吧！因為我們必能得勝。” 31 但是，那些與他同去的人卻說：“我們不能上去攻擊那民，因為他們比我們強。” 32 那些探子就他們窺探之地向以色列人報惡信，說：“我們經過要窺探的地方，是個吞吃居民的地方；我們在那裡看見的人，個個都高大。 33 在那裡我們看見了巨人，就是亞衲人的子孫，是巨人的後裔；我們看自己好像是蚱蜢，他們看我們也是這樣。”

13 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, 2 “ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਨਾਨ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਭੇਜੋ। ਇਹੀ ਉਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਮੈਂ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਬਾਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹਾਂ, ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਆਗੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜੋ।”
3 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਮੰਨਿਆ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਾਰਾਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੂਥਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੇਰਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਗੂ ਸਨ। 4 ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਨ:
ਰਊਬੇਨ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਸ਼ੰਮੂਆ, ਜ਼ਕੂਰ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ;
5 ਸ਼ਿਮਓਨ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਸ਼ਾਫ਼ਾਟ ਹੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ;
6 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਕਾਲੇਬ, ਯਫ਼ੁੰਨਾਹ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ;
7 ਯਿੱਸਾਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਯੂਸੁਫ਼ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਯਿਗਾਲ;

11 (ਮਨੱਸ਼ਹ) ਯੂਸਫ਼ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਸੂਸੀ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਗੱਦੀ;
12 ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਗਮਲੀ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅੰਮੀਏਲ;
13 ਆਸ਼ੇਰ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ-ਸਮੂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ, ਮੀਕਾਏਲ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸਥੂਰ;

16 ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਪਰੱਖ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਘੱਲੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। (ਮੂਸਾ ਨੇ ਨੂਨ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੋਸ਼ੇਆ ਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਸ਼ੁਆ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ।)
17 ਜਦੋਂ ਮੂਸਾ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਨਾਨ ਦੀ ਪਰੱਖ ਪੜਤਾਨ ਲਈ ਭੇਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਨੇਗੇਵ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਕੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਉ। 18 ਇਹ ਦੇਖੋ ਕਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰੋ। ਕੀ ਉਹ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹਨ? ਕੀ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਹਨ। ਜਾਂ ਥੋੜੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ? 19 ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰੋ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕੀ ਉਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਰੀ ਉੱਤੇ? ਉਹ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਗਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ? ਕੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਗਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਹਨ? ਕੀ ਉਹ ਨਗਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ? 20 ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰੋ। ਕੀ ਇਹ ਮਿੱਟੀ, ਪੌਦੇ ਉਗਾਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਉਪਜਾਊ ਹੈ। ਜਾਂ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਘੱਟ ਉਪਜਾਊ ਹੈ। ਕੀ ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਹਨ? ਅਤੇ, ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ਲ ਵੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਉ।” (ਇਹ ਉਹ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਅੰਗੂਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਗੇਤੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਪੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।)
21 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪਰੱਖ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੀਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੂਥਲ ਤੋਂ ਰੇਹੋਬ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਬੋ ਹਾਮਾਥ ਤੱਕ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਪਰੱਖ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ। 22 ਉਹ ਨੇਗੇਵ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਹਬਰੋਨ ਵੱਲ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ। (ਹਬਰੋਨ ਦਾ ਨਗਰ ਮਿਸਰ ਦੇ ਸੋਆਨ ਨਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਤ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਸਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।) ਅਹਿਮਾਨ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਈ ਅਤੇ ਤਲਮਈ ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਅਨਾਕ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਸਨ। 23 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਅਸ਼ਕੋਲ ਵਾਦੀ ਵੱਲ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ। ਉੱਥੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਗੂਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਟਹਿਣੀ ਤੋੜ ਲਈ। ਟਹਿਣੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਅੰਗੂਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਛੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਟਹਿਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਡੰਡੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਟੰਗ ਲਿਆ। ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਆਦਮੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਅਨਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਜੀਰ ਵੀ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਈ। 24 ਇਸ ਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸ਼ਕੋਲ ਵਾਦੀ ਸੱਦਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹੀ ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਸੀ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਗੂਰਾ ਦਾ ਗੁਛਾ ਤੋੜਿਆ ਸੀ।
25 ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ 40 ਦਿਨ ਤੱਕ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਉਹ ਡੇਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ। 26 ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਾਰਾਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੂਥਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਾਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਆਦਮੀ ਮੂਸਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਰੂਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਗਏ। ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੂੰ, ਹਾਰੂਨ ਨੂੰ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੇਖੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਫ਼ਲ ਵੀ ਦਿਖਾਏ। 27 ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਵੱਲ ਗਏ ਸਾਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ਲ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਉੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ। 28 ਪਰ ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿਣੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਹਨ। ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਬੜੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਹਨ। ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਅਸੀਂ ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੁਝ ਅਨਾਕੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਦੇਖਿਆ। 29 ਮਾਲੇਕੀ ਲੋਕ ਨੇਗੇਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹਿੱਤੀ, ਯਬੂਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਮੋਰੀ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕਨਾਨੀ ਯਰਦਨ ਨਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।”
30 ਕਾਲੇਬ ਨੇ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਆਖਿਆ, ਫ਼ੇਰ ਕਾਲੇਬ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਸਾਨੂੰ ਉੱਥੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ ਬੜੀ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।”
31 ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਏ ਸਨ, ਆਖਿਆ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੜ ਸੱਕਦੇ! ਉਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਹਨ।” 32 ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, ਉਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੇਖੀ ਹੈ, “ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਇੰਨੇ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਬੜੀ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਹਰ ਉਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾ ਸੱਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਉੱਥੇ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। 33 ਅਸੀਂ ਉੱਥੇ ਦਿਓ-ਕਦ ਨਫ਼ੀਲੀਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ! (ਅਨਾਕ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਫ਼ੀਲੀਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹਨ।) ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਵੱਲ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਟਿੱਡੇ ਹੋਈਏ। ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਟਿੱਡੀਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਂ!”

13 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 (B)“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.”
3 So Moses sent them (C)from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4 Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; 6 (D)from the tribe of Judah, (E)Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, [a]Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to [b]spy out the land. And Moses called (F)Hoshea[c] the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way into the South, and go up to (G)the mountains, 18 and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; 19 whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; 20 whether the land is [d]rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. (H)Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land (I)from the Wilderness of Zin as far as (J)Rehob, near the entrance of (K)Hamath. 22 And they went up through the South and came to (L)Hebron; Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of (M)Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 (N)Then they came to the [e]Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24 The place was called the Valley of [f]Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there. 25 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
26 Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at (O)Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly [g]flows with (P)milk and honey, (Q)and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless the (R)people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of (S)Anak there. 29 (T)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”
30 Then (U)Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”
31 (V)But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they (W)gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and (X)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the [h]giants ((Y)the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were (Z)like[i] grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were (AA)in their sight.”
