28 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father:
2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
5 Wherefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.
6 For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day, which were all valiant men; because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers.
7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king's son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, and Elkanah that was next to the king.
8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.
9 But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the Lord God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
10 And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the Lord your God?
11 Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.
12 Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war,
13 And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the Lord already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation.
15 And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
16 At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.
17 For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives.
18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.
19 For the Lord brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the Lord.
20 And Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.
21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the Lord, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.
22 And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the Lord: this is that king Ahaz.
23 For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
25 And in every several city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.
26 Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

Ahaz Reigns in Judah
28 (A)Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done, 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made (B)metal images for (C)the Baals, 3 and (D)he made offerings in the (E)Valley of the Son of Hinnom and (F)burned his sons as an offering,[a] according to (G)the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and (H)made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.
Judah Defeated
5 (I)Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force. 6 For (J)Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 from Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers. 7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king's son and Azrikam the commander of the palace and Elkanah the next in authority to the king.
8 The men of Israel took captive 200,000 (K)of their relatives, women, sons, and daughters. They also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria. 9 But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded, and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the Lord, the God of your fathers, (L)was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage (M)that has reached up to heaven. 10 And now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, as your slaves. Have you not sins of your own against the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, and send back the captives (N)from your relatives whom you have taken, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.”
12 Certain chiefs also of the men of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring upon us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the assembly. 15 And (O)the men who have been mentioned by name rose and took the captives, and with the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them. They clothed them, gave them sandals, (P)provided them with food and drink, and anointed them, and carrying all the feeble among them on donkeys, they brought them to their kinsfolk at Jericho, (Q)the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria.
16 (R)At that time King Ahaz sent to the king[b] of Assyria for help. 17 For the Edomites had again invaded and defeated Judah and carried away captives. 18 (S)And the Philistines had made raids on (T)the cities in the Shephelah and the Negeb of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco (U)with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages. And they settled there. 19 For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made (V)Judah act sinfully[c] and had been very unfaithful to the Lord. 20 So (W)Tiglath-pileser[d] king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him. 21 (X)For Ahaz took a portion from the house of the Lord and the house of the king and of the princes, and gave tribute to the king of Assyria, but it did not help him.
Ahaz's Idolatry
22 In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz. 23 For (Y)he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus that had defeated him and said, (Z)“Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and (AA)cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made himself (AB)altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 In every city of Judah he made high places to (AC)make offerings to other gods, provoking to anger the Lord, the God of his fathers. 26 (AD)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for (AE)they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. Syria and Israel Defeat Judah(I)

Israel Returns the Captives
9 But a (O)prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out before the army that came to Samaria, and said to them: “Look, (P)because the Lord God of your fathers was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand; but you have killed them in a rage that (Q)reaches up to heaven. 10 And now you propose to force the children of Judah and Jerusalem to be your (R)male and female slaves; but are you not also guilty before the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, therefore, and return the captives, whom you have taken captive from your brethren, (S)for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.”
12 Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war, 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives here, for we already have offended the Lord. You intend to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the [c]spoil before the leaders and all the assembly. 15 Then the men (T)who were designated by name rose up and took the captives, and from the [d]spoil they clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them and gave them sandals, (U)gave them food and drink, and anointed them; and they let all the feeble ones ride on donkeys. Assyria Refuses to Help Judah(W)
16 (X)At the same time King Ahaz sent to the [e]kings of Assyria to help him. 17 For again the (Y)Edomites had come, attacked Judah, and carried away captives. 18 (Z)The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Sochoh with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages; and they dwelt there. 19 For the Lord [f]brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of (AA)Israel, for he had (AB)encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the Lord. 20 Also (AC)Tiglath-Pileser[g] king of Assyria came to him and distressed him, and did not assist him. 21 For Ahaz took part of the treasures from the house of the Lord, from the house of the king, and from the leaders, and he gave it to the king of Assyria; but he did not help him.
Apostasy and Death of Ahaz(AD)
22 Now in the time of his distress King Ahaz became increasingly unfaithful to the Lord. This is that King Ahaz. 23 For (AE)he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, saying, “Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, I will sacrifice to them (AF)that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 So Ahaz gathered the articles of the house of God, cut in pieces the articles of the house of God, (AG)shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and made for himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 And in every single city of Judah he made [h]high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.
26 (AH)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 So Ahaz [i]rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem; but they (AI)did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. Then Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.

Règne d’Achaz
28 Achaz avait 20 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 16 ans à Jérusalem. Il ne fit pas ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, contrairement à son ancêtre David. 2 Il marcha sur la voie des rois d'Israël. Il fit même fabriquer des idoles en métal fondu pour les Baals, 3 brûla des parfums dans la vallée des fils de Hinnom et fit passer ses fils par le feu, conformément aux pratiques abominables des nations que l'Eternel avait dépossédées devant les Israélites. 4 Il offrait des sacrifices et des parfums sur les hauts lieux, sur les collines et sous tout arbre vert.
5 L'Eternel, son Dieu, le livra entre les mains du roi de Syrie. Les Syriens le battirent et lui firent un grand nombre de prisonniers, qu'ils emmenèrent à Damas. Il alla à la rencontre de l'armée alors qu’elle revenait à Samarie et il leur dit: «C'est à cause de sa colère contre Juda que l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos ancêtres, les a livrés entre vos mains, et vous les avez tués avec une rage telle qu’elle est parvenue jusqu'au ciel. 10 Et vous parlez maintenant de faire des habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem vos serviteurs et vos servantes! Mais vous, n'êtes-vous pas aussi coupables envers l'Eternel, votre Dieu? 11 Ecoutez-moi donc et renvoyez ces prisonniers que vous avez faits parmi vos frères, car la colère de l'Eternel est enflammée contre vous.» 12 Quelques-uns des chefs des Ephraïmites – Azaria, fils de Jochanan, Bérékia, fils de Meshillémoth, Ezéchias, fils de Shallum, et Amasa, fils de Hadlaï – se dressèrent contre ceux qui revenaient de l’expédition 13 et leur dirent: «Vous ne ferez pas entrer ces prisonniers ici, car c’est pour nous rendre plus coupables encore envers l'Eternel que vous parlez d’ajouter à nos péchés et à nos fautes. En effet, nous sommes déjà bien coupables et la colère de l'Eternel est enflammée contre Israël.»
14 Les soldats abandonnèrent les prisonniers et le butin devant les chefs et devant toute l'assemblée, 15 et les hommes dont les noms viennent d'être mentionnés se mirent à réconforter les prisonniers. Ils employèrent le butin à habiller tous ceux qui étaient nus en leur donnant vêtements et chaussures. Ils les firent manger et boire et les soignèrent. Puis ils conduisirent sur des ânes tous ceux qui étaient fatigués et les amenèrent à Jéricho, la ville des palmiers, près de leurs frères, avant de retourner à Samarie.
16 A cette époque-là, le roi Achaz envoya demander du secours aux rois d'Assyrie. 17 Les Edomites étaient encore venus, avaient battu Juda et emmené des prisonniers. 18 Quant aux Philistins, ils avaient lancé une attaque contre les villes de la plaine et du sud de Juda. Ils avaient pris Beth-Shémesh, Ajalon, Guedéroth, Soco et les villes qui en dépendaient, Thimna et les villes qui en dépendaient, Guimzo et les villes qui en dépendaient, et ils s'y étaient installés. 19 En effet, l'Eternel avait humilié Juda à cause d'Achaz, roi d'Israël, qui avait poussé au dérèglement dans Juda et avait commis des actes d’infidélité envers lui. 20 Tilgath-Pilnéser, le roi d'Assyrie, vint contre lui et le traita en ennemi au lieu de le soutenir. 21 Achaz avait dépouillé la maison de l'Eternel, le palais royal et la maison des chefs pour faire des cadeaux au roi d'Assyrie, mais cela ne lui servit à rien.
22 Alors même qu'il était dans la détresse, il persista dans son infidélité envers l'Eternel, lui, le roi Achaz. 23 Il offrit des sacrifices aux dieux de Damas qui l'avaient frappé et dit: «Puisque les dieux des rois de Syrie leur viennent en aide, je leur offrirai des sacrifices pour qu'ils viennent à mon aide.» Mais ils provoquèrent sa chute et celle de tout Israël. 24 Achaz rassembla les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu et les mit en pièces. Il ferma les portes de la maison de l'Eternel et se fit faire des autels à tous les coins de rue de Jérusalem. 25 Dans chacune des villes de Juda, il établit des hauts lieux pour offrir des parfums à d'autres dieux. Il irrita ainsi l'Eternel, le Dieu de ses ancêtres.
26 Le reste de ses actes, des premiers aux derniers, tout ce qu’il a fait est décrit dans les annales des rois de Juda et d'Israël.
27 Achaz se coucha avec ses ancêtres et on l'enterra dans la ville, à Jérusalem, car on ne le mit pas dans les tombeaux des rois d'Israël. Son fils Ezéchias devint roi à sa place.
