耶和華禁羅波安與以色列戰
11 羅波安來到耶路撒冷，招聚猶大家和便雅憫家，共十八萬人，都是挑選的戰士，要與以色列人爭戰，好將國奪回再歸自己。 2 但耶和華的話臨到神人示瑪雅說： 3 「你去告訴所羅門的兒子猶大王羅波安和住猶大、便雅憫的以色列眾人說： 4 『耶和華如此說：你們不可上去與你們的弟兄爭戰。各歸各家去吧，因為這事出於我。』」眾人就聽從耶和華的話歸回，不去與耶羅波安爭戰。
5 羅波安住在耶路撒冷，在猶大地修築城邑， 6 為保障修築伯利恆、以坦、提哥亞、 7 伯夙、梭哥、亞杜蘭、 8 迦特、瑪利沙、西弗、 9 亞多萊音、拉吉、亞西加、 10 瑣拉、亞雅崙、希伯崙，這都是猶大和便雅憫的堅固城。 11 羅波安又堅固各處的保障，在其中安置軍長，又預備下糧食、油、酒。 12 他在各城裡預備盾牌和槍，且使城極其堅固。猶大和便雅憫都歸了他。
祭司利未人咸歸羅波安
13 以色列全地的祭司和利未人都從四方來歸羅波安。 14 利未人撇下他們的郊野和產業，來到猶大與耶路撒冷，是因耶羅波安和他的兒子拒絕他們，不許他們供祭司職分侍奉耶和華。 15 耶羅波安為丘壇，為鬼魔[a]，為自己所鑄造的牛犢，設立祭司。 16 以色列各支派中，凡立定心意尋求耶和華以色列神的，都隨從利未人來到耶路撒冷，祭祀耶和華他們列祖的神。 17 這樣，就堅固猶大國，使所羅門的兒子羅波安強盛三年，因為他們三年遵行大衛和所羅門的道。

18 羅波安娶大衛兒子耶利摩的女兒瑪哈拉為妻，又娶耶西兒子以利押的女兒亞比孩為妻。 19 從她生了幾個兒子，就是耶烏施、示瑪利雅、撒罕。 20 後來又娶押沙龍的女兒瑪迦[b]，從她生了亞比雅、亞太、細撒、示羅密。 21 羅波安娶十八個妻，立六十個妾，生二十八個兒子、六十個女兒，他卻愛押沙龍的女兒瑪迦比愛別的妻妾更甚。 22 羅波安立瑪迦的兒子亞比雅做太子，在他弟兄中為首，因為想要立他接續做王。 23 羅波安辦事精明，使他眾子分散在猶大和便雅憫全地各堅固城裡，又賜他們許多糧食，為他們多尋妻子。

Judah and Benjamin Fortified
11 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled one hundred and eighty thousand chosen troops of the house of Judah and Benjamin to fight against Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam. 2 But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God: 3 Say to King Rehoboam of Judah, son of Solomon, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, 4 ‘Thus says the Lord: You shall not go up or fight against your kindred. Let everyone return home, for this thing is from me.’ So they heeded the word of the Lord and turned back from the expedition against Jeroboam.
5 Rehoboam resided in Jerusalem, and he built cities for defence in Judah. 6 He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7 Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, fortified cities that are in Judah and in Benjamin. 11 He made the fortresses strong, and put commanders in them, and stores of food, oil, and wine. 12 He also put large shields and spears in all the cities, and made them very strong. So he held Judah and Benjamin.
Priests and Levites Support Rehoboam
13 The priests and the Levites who were in all Israel presented themselves to him from all their territories. 14 The Levites had left their common lands and their holdings and had come to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had prevented them from serving as priests of the Lord, 15 and had appointed his own priests for the high places, and for the goat-demons, and for the calves that he had made. 16 Those who had set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came after them from all the tribes of Israel to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 17 They strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and for three years they made Rehoboam son of Solomon secure, for they walked for three years in the way of David and Solomon.
Rehoboam’s Marriages
18 Rehoboam took as his wife Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth son of David, and of Abihail daughter of Eliab son of Jesse. 19 She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham. 20 After her he took Maacah daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith. 21 Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more than all his other wives and concubines (he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and became the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters). 22 Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as chief prince among his brothers, for he intended to make him king. 23 He dealt wisely, and distributed some of his sons through all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, in all the fortified cities; he gave them abundant provisions, and found many wives for them.

11 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem,(A) he mustered Judah and Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam.
2 But this word of the Lord came to Shemaiah(B) the man of God: 3 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, 4 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your fellow Israelites.(C) Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the words of the Lord and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.
Rehoboam Fortifies Judah
5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built up towns for defense in Judah: 6 Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7 Beth Zur, Soko, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10 Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron. These were fortified cities(D) in Judah and Benjamin. 11 He strengthened their defenses and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, olive oil and wine. 12 He put shields and spears in all the cities, and made them very strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.
13 The priests and Levites from all their districts throughout Israel sided with him. 14 The Levites(E) even abandoned their pasturelands and property(F) and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them as priests of the Lord 15 when he appointed(G) his own priests(H) for the high places and for the goat(I) and calf(J) idols he had made. 16 Those from every tribe of Israel(K) who set their hearts on seeking the Lord, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 17 They strengthened(L) the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon three years, following the ways of David and Solomon during this time.
Rehoboam’s Family
18 Rehoboam married Mahalath, who was the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab. 19 She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham. 20 Then he married Maakah(M) daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah,(N) Attai, Ziza and Shelomith. 21 Rehoboam loved Maakah daughter of Absalom more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives(O) and sixty concubines, twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22 Rehoboam appointed Abijah(P) son of Maakah as crown prince among his brothers, in order to make him king. 23 He acted wisely, dispersing some of his sons throughout the districts of Judah and Benjamin, and to all the fortified cities. He gave them abundant provisions(Q) and took many wives for them.
