The Revolt Against Rehoboam(A)
10 And (B)Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. 2 So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was in Egypt, (C)where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), that Jeroboam returned from Egypt. 3 Then they sent for him and called him. And Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4 “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 So he said to them, “Come back to me after three days.” And the people departed.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, saying, “How do you advise me to answer these people?”
7 And they spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to these people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever.”
8 (D)But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. 9 And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”
10 Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to the people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist! 11 And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with [a]scourges!’ ”
12 So (E)Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.” 13 Then the king answered them roughly. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders, 14 and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, [b]“My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with [c]scourges!” 15 So the king did not listen to the people; (F)for the turn of events was from God, that the Lord might fulfill His (G)word, which He had spoken by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying:
“What share have we in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Every man to your tents, O Israel!
Now see to your own house, O David!”
So all Israel departed to their tents. 17 But Rehoboam reigned over the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of revenue; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Therefore King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste to flee to Jerusalem. 19 (H)So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

10 Roboão foi até Siquém porque todos os israelitas foram lá para proclamá-lo rei. 2 Jeroboão, filho de Nabate, estava ainda no Egito, aonde tinha ido para escapar de Salomão. Ali ouviu dizer que Salomão havia morrido. Então voltou de lá. 3 Todo o povo de Israel mandou chamá-lo, e juntos se apresentaram perante Roboão. Eles disseram:
4 —Seu pai nos obrigou a trabalhar muito duro. Agora, faça com que o nosso trabalho se torne mais leve e nós serviremos você.
5 Roboão respondeu:
—Voltem daqui a três dias e lhes darei uma resposta.
Então eles foram embora. 6 Havia alguns líderes que costumavam aconselhar Salomão quando ele ainda estava vivo. O rei Roboão perguntou a eles:
—Como devo responder a este povo?
7 Eles responderam:
—Se o rei quiser servir o povo e responder de forma que eles recebam o que pediram, o povo continuará servindo-o para sempre.
8 Mas Roboão não deu atenção ao que eles falaram. Então pediu conselho aos seus amigos jovens que tinham sido criados com ele. 9 Roboão disse:
—O povo falou o seguinte: “Faça com que o nosso trabalho se torne mais leve do que nos impôs seu pai”. Como vocês acham que eu deveria responder? O que digo a eles?
10 Os jovens que tinham sido criados com ele disseram:
—Seu pai os obrigou a fazer trabalhos pesados e você vai permitir que eles façam trabalhos mais leves? Diga a eles isto: “Meu dedo mínimo é mais pesado do que a cintura do meu pai. 11 Embora meu pai fizesse com que vocês trabalhassem muito pesado, eu farei com que vocês trabalhem ainda mais pesado! Se ele os castigou com açoites, eu os castigarei com chicotes que têm metal na ponta”.[a]
12 Visto que Roboão havia dito ao povo para voltar em três dias, todos os israelitas voltaram três dias depois e Jeroboão estava com eles. 13 Então o rei Roboão falou duramente com eles e não seguiu o conselho sugerido pelos líderes. 14 Fez o que os seus amigos aconselharam. Então Roboão disse ao povo:
—Meu pai os obrigou a trabalhar muito, mas eu lhes darei ainda mais trabalho. Meu pai os castigou com açoites, mas eu os castigarei com chicotes que têm pedaços de metal na ponta.
15 (O rei não fez o que o povo queria porque o SENHOR assim o quis para cumprir a promessa que fez a Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, por meio do profeta Aías, de Siló.)
16 Todos os israelitas viram que o novo rei não queria ouvi-los. Por isso disseram ao rei:
—Por acaso somos parte da família de Davi? Nos deram a terra de Jessé? Por isso, Israel, vá cada um para sua casa, que o filho de Davi governe sobre os que são da sua própria família!
Então todos os israelitas foram para as suas casas. 17 E Roboão passou a governar somente sobre os que moravam nas cidades de Judá.
18 Um homem chamado Adonirão era um dos que dirigia os trabalhadores. O rei enviou Adonirão para falar com o povo, mas os israelitas o apedrejaram e ele morreu. Roboão subiu rapidamente na sua carruagem e fugiu para Jerusalém. 19 (Assim Israel se rebelou contra a dinastia de Davi e isso continua até o dia de hoje.)

2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3 And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9 And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14 And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the Lord might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
