Ang Sensus at ang Salot(A)
21 Nais guluhin ni Satanas ang Israel kaya inudyukan nito si David na magsensus. 2 Dahil dito, inutusan ng hari si Joab at ang mga pinuno ng hukbo na alamin ang bilang ng mga Israelita mula sa Beer-seba hanggang sa Dan, at iulat sa kanya.
3 Ngunit sinabi ni Joab, “Halimbawang ang mga tao'y paramihin ni Yahweh nang makasandaang beses, hindi ba't sila'y mga lingkod mo pa rin, at ikaw ang kanilang marangal na hari? Bakit pa ninyo kailangang gawin ito, Kamahalan? Bakit pa ninyo bibigyan ng dahilan upang magkasala ang Israel?” 4 Ngunit nanaig ang utos ng hari. Kaya't si Joab ay naglibot sa buong lupain at pagkatapos ay nagbalik sa Jerusalem. 5 Iniulat niya kay David ang kabuuang bilang ng kalalakihang maaaring gawing kawal: sa Israel ay 1,100,000 at sa Juda naman ay 470,000. 6 Ngunit hindi niya isinama sa sensus ang lipi nina Levi at Benjamin, sapagkat labag sa kanyang kalooban ang utos na ito ng hari.
7 Nagalit ang Diyos sa ginawang ito, kaya pinarusahan niya ang Israel. 8 Sinabi ni David sa Diyos, “Napakalaking kasalanan ang nagawa ko, Yahweh! Patawarin mo sana ako sa aking kahangalan.”
9 Sinabi ni Yahweh kay Gad, ang propeta ni David, 10-11 “Pumunta ka kay David at sabihin mo sa kanya, ‘Sinabi ni Yahweh, pumili ka sa tatlong bagay na maaari kong gawin sa iyo.’”
Pumunta nga si Gad kay David at pinapili ito: 12 tatlong taóng taggutom, tatlong buwang pananalanta ng mga kaaway, o tatlong araw na pananalanta ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng salot sa buong Israel na isasagawa ng anghel ni Yahweh. “Magpasya ka ngayon upang masabi ko ito kay Yahweh,” sabi ni Gad kay David.
13 “Napakahirap ng kalagayan ko,” sagot ni David. “Gusto kong si Yahweh ang magparusa sa akin sapagkat mahabagin siya. Ayaw kong tao ang magparusa sa akin.”
14 Nagpadala nga ng salot sa Israel si Yahweh, at pitumpung libo ang namatay sa kanila. 15 Sinugo ng Diyos ang isang anghel ni Yahweh upang wasakin ang Jerusalem, ngunit nang wawasakin na ito, ikinalungkot ni Yahweh ang nangyayari. Kaya't sinabi niya, “Tama na! Huwag mo nang ituloy iyan.” Ang anghel noon ay nakatayo sa tabi ng giikan ni Ornan na isang Jebuseo.
16 Tumingala si David at nakita niya ang anghel ni Yahweh sa pagitan ng langit at lupa. May hawak itong espada at nakaamba sa Jerusalem. Si David at ang matatandang pinuno ay nagsuot ng damit-panluksa, at nagpatirapa. 17 Tumawag siya sa Diyos, “Ako po ang nag-utos na alamin ang bilang ng mga tao. Walang kasalanan ang mga taong-bayan. Kaya ako at ang aking angkan na lamang ang inyong parusahan. Huwag ninyong idamay sa salot ang mga tao.”
18 Si Gad ay inutusan ng anghel ni Yahweh upang sabihin kay David na magpunta sa giikan ni Ornan na Jebuseo at magtayo roon ng altar para kay Yahweh. 19 Sumunod naman si David sa ipinapasabi ni Yahweh kay Gad. 20 Gumigiik noon si Ornan kasama ang apat niyang anak na lalaki. Nang makita nila ang anghel, nagtago ang mga anak niya. 21 Nakita ni Ornan na dumarating si David, kaya't sinalubong niya ito. Nagpatirapa siya bilang pagbibigay-galang. 22 Sinabi ni David, “Bibilhin ko ang lupang ito para pagtayuan ko ng altar ni Yahweh upang matigil na ang salot na namiminsala sa bayan.”
23 “Sa inyo na lang po ito at huwag na ninyong bayaran,” sagot ni Ornan. “Kayo na po ang bahala kung anong gusto ninyong gawin. Narito pa po ang mga toro para sa handog na susunugin at ang mga kahoy na ginagamit sa paggiik para gawing panggatong. Narito rin po ang trigo para sa handog na pagkaing butil. Lahat pong ito'y sa inyo na.”
24 Ngunit sinabi ni David kay Ornan, “Hindi! Ibibigay ko sa iyo ang eksaktong bayad. Hindi ako maghahandog kay Yahweh ng bagay na hindi akin at ng anumang walang halaga.” 25 Kaya't binili ni David kay Ornan ang lugar na iyon sa halagang animnaraang pirasong ginto. 26 Nagtayo siya roon ng altar para kay Yahweh at nagdala ng handog na susunugin at handog pangkapayapaan. Nanalangin siya kay Yahweh at sumagot naman si Yahweh sa pamamagitan ng apoy buhat sa langit upang sunugin ang mga handog sa ibabaw ng altar.
27 Iniutos ni Yahweh sa anghel na isuksok na ang espada, at sumunod naman ito. 28 Noon natiyak ni David na pinakinggan siya ni Yahweh. Kaya't nag-alay si David ng mga handog sa giikang pag-aari noon ni Ornan na Jebuseo. 29 Noon, ang tabernakulo ni Yahweh na ginawa ni Moises sa ilang, at ang altar na sunugan ng mga handog ay nasa burol na lugar ng pagsamba sa Gibeon. 30 Ngunit hindi makapunta doon si David upang sumangguni sa Diyos sapagkat natatakot siya sa espada ng anghel ni Yahweh.

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
