24 耶和华又向以色列人发怒，祂促使大卫来对付他们，让大卫统计以色列和犹大的人口。 2 大卫对统领军队的约押说：“你去走遍以色列各支派，从但到别示巴，统计以色列和犹大的人口，让我知道国民的数目。” 3 约押说：“我主我王，愿你的上帝耶和华使国民增加百倍，让你亲眼看到。但我主我王为什么要统计人口呢？” 4 但大卫不听约押和其他将领的规劝。他们只好去统计以色列的人数。 5 他们过了约旦河，在谷中亚罗珥城南面安营，又经过迦得前往雅谢。 6 然后，他们到基列、他停·合示地区、但·雅安，绕到西顿， 7 再去泰尔的堡垒及希未人和迦南人的城邑。最后，他们到了犹大南部的别示巴。 8 他们花了九个月零二十天的时间，走遍全国，最后回到耶路撒冷。 9 约押把统计的人数奏告大卫：“以色列有八十万英勇的刀兵，犹大有五十万。”

24 And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the Lord thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:
6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,
7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.
8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,
12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
15 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.
18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.
19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded.
20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.
21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The Lord thy God accept thee.
24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25 And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

24 And again the Af Hashem was kindled against Yisroel, and He incited Dovid against them to say, Go, number Yisroel and Yehudah.
2 For HaMelech said to Yoav Sar HaChayil, who was with him, Go now through kol Shivtei Yisroel, from Dan even to Beer Sheva, and number ye HaAm, that I may know the Mispar HaAm.
3 And Yoav said unto HaMelech, Now Hashem Eloheicha add unto HaAm, how many soever they be, a hundredfold, and that the eyes of adoni HaMelech may see it; but why doth adoni HaMelech delight in this thing?
4 Notwithstanding the devar HaMelech prevailed against Yoav, and against the Sarei HeChayil. And Yoav and the Sarei HaChayil went out from before HaMelech, to number HaAm Yisroel.
5 And they passed over Yarden, encamped in Aroer, on the south of the Ir that lieth in the middle of the ravine of Gad, toward Yazer;
6 Then they came to Gil‘ad, to Eretz Tachtim-Chodshi; they came to Dan-Ya’an, went around to Tzidon,
7 And came to the fortress of Tzor, and to all the cities of the Chivi, and of Kena’ani; and they went out to the Negev of Yehudah, to Beer Sheva.
8 So when they had gone through kol HaAretz, they came to Yerushalayim at the end of 9 months and 20 days.
9 And Yoav gave up the sum of the number of HaAm unto HaMelech; and there were in Yisroel Shmoneh Me’ot Elef ish chayil that drew the cherev; and the Ish Yehudah were chamesh Me’ot Elef ish.
10 And the lev Dovid struck him after that he had numbered HaAm. And Dovid said unto Hashem, Chatati (I have sinned) me’od (greatly) in what I have done; and now, Hashem, take away the avon (iniquity, guilt) of Thy eved; for I have done very foolishly.
11 For when Dovid rose up in the boker, the Devar Hashem came unto Gad HaNavi, the Chozeh Dovid (Seer of Dovid), saying,
12 Go, say unto Dovid, Thus saith Hashem, I offer thee shalosh (three, three things); choose for thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
13 So Gad came to Dovid, and told him, and said unto him, Shall shalosh [see 1Chr 21:12, Hebrew here says sheva] shanim of ra’av (famine) come unto thee in thy land? Or wilt thou flee shloshah chodashim before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? Or that there be shloshet yamim dever (three days of pestilence) in thy land? Now consider, and see what answer I shall return to Him that sent me.
14 And Dovid said unto Gad, I am in a great tzar (distress); let us fall now into the Yad Hashem; for His rachamim are rabbim: and let me not fall into the yad adam.
15 So Hashem sent a dever (pestilence) upon Yisroel from the boker even to the es mo’ed (time appointed); and there died of HaAm from Dan even to Beer Sheva shiv’im elef ish.
16 And when the Malach stretched out his yad upon Yerushalayim to destroy her, Hashem relented from the destruction, and said to the Malach that destroyed HaAm, It is enough; restrain now thine yad. And the Malach Hashem was by the goren of Aravnah the Yevusi.
17 And Dovid spoke unto Hashem when he saw the Malach that struck HaAm, and said, Hineh, I have sinned, and I have transgressed; but these tzon, what have they done? Let Thine yad be against me, and against Bais Avi [Isa 53:6].
18 And Gad came that day to Dovid, and said unto him, Go up, erect a Mizbe’ach unto Hashem in the goren of Aravnah the Yevusi.
19 And Dovid, according to the Devar Gad, went up as Hashem commanded.
20 And Aravnah looked, and saw HaMelech and his avadim coming on toward him; and Aravnah went out, and prostrated himself before HaMelech on his face upon the ground.
21 And Aravnah said, Why is adoni HaMelech come to his eved? And Dovid said, To buy the goren of thee, to build a Mizbe’ach unto Hashem, that the magefah (plague) may be withdrawn from HaAm.
22 And Aravnah said unto Dovid, Let adoni HaMelech take and offer up what seemeth tov unto him; see, here are oxen for the olah (burnt sacrifice), and threshing tools and other instruments of the bakar (oxen) for wood.
23 All these things did Aravnah, hamelech lamelech, give. And Aravnah said unto HaMelech, Hashem Eloheicha yirtzecha (accept thee).
24 And HaMelech said unto Aravnah, Lo (no); but I will surely buy it of thee at a mekhir (price); neither will I offer olot (burnt offerings) unto Hashem Elohai of that which doth cost me nothing. So Dovid bought the goren and the bakar for fifty shekels of kesef.
25 And Dovid built there a Mizbe’ach unto Hashem, and offered olot (burnt offerings) and shelamim (peace offerings). So Hashem was entreated for the land, and the magefah (plague, see Isa 53:8) was withdrawn from Yisroel.

24 Än en gång flammade Herrens vrede upp mot Israel och han hetsade David mot folket. ”Du ska genomföra en folkräkning i Israel och Juda”, sa han.
2 Kungen sa till Joav och de andra officerarna: ”Far till Israels alla stammar och räkna allt folket, från Dan till Beer Sheva, och mönstra dem, så att jag får veta hur många de är.”
3 Men Joav svarade: ”Visserligen önskar jag att Herren ska öka vårt folk hundra gånger och att du själv ska få se det med egna ögon, min herre och kung, men varför måste vi räkna folket?” 4 Joav och de andra arméofficerarna fick dock böja sig för kungens ord och gick ut för att verkställa befallningen.[a]
5 Först gick de över Jordan och slog läger söder om staden Aroer i dalen och fortsatte sedan genom Gad mot Jaser.[b] 6 Sedan gick de till Gilead och Tatim Hodshis land och till Dan och Ijon och vidare runt mot Sidon. 7 Därefter gick de till Tyros fästning och till hivéernas och kananéernas städer och slutligen söderöver till Negev i Juda och ända till Beer Sheva. 8 De genomkorsade alltså hela landet och slutförde sin uppgift på nio månader och tjugo dagar och kom tillbaka till Jerusalem. 9 Joav rapporterade resultatet av mönstringen för kungen, 800 000 stridsdugliga, svärdbeväpnade män i Israel, och 500 000 i Juda.
David accepterar Herrens straff
10 Men efter att folkräkningen hade slutförts, började Davids samvete oroa honom och han sa till Herren: ”Jag har begått en svår synd. Förlåt mig, din tjänare, min skuld! Jag har gjort något mycket dåraktigt.”
11 När David steg upp nästa morgon, kom Herrens ord till profeten Gad, Davids siare: 12 ”Gå och säg till David: ’Så säger Herren: Tre ting lägger jag fram för dig. Välj ett av dem, så låter jag det drabba dig.’ ”
13 Gad gick till David och sa till honom: ”Gör ditt val: tre[c] års hungersnöd i ditt land, tre månaders flykt undan dina fiender som förföljer dig, eller tre dagars pest i ditt land. Tänk över vilket svar jag ska ge till honom som har sänt mig!”
14 ”Jag är i stor vånda”, sa David till Gad. ”Låt mig falla i Herrens händer, för Herrens barmhärtighet är stor. I människors händer vill jag inte falla.”
15 Herren sände då en pest över Israel redan samma morgon. Den varade till den utsatta tiden och 70 000 av landets invånare dog från Dan till Beer Sheva.
16 Men när ängeln räckte ut sin hand för att förgöra Jerusalem, ångrade Herren det onda och sa till ängeln som dödade folket: ”Det är nog! Dra tillbaka din hand!” Herrens ängel stod just då vid jevusén Aravnas tröskplats.
17 När David såg ängeln som dödade folket, sa han till Herren: ”Det är jag som har syndat och gjort orätt! Vad har denna min hjord gjort? Låt ditt straff drabba mig och min familj!”
David bygger ett altare
(1 Krön 21:18-27)
18 Samma dag kom Gad till David och sa till honom: ”Gå och bygg ett altare åt Herren på jevusén Aravnas tröskplats!”
19 Då gick David, som Herren hade befallt honom genom Gad. 20 När Aravna tittade ut och såg kungen och hans män komma emot honom, gick han fram och bugade sig till marken för David 21 och frågade: ”Varför har min herre och kung kommit hit till sin tjänare?” David svarade: ”För att köpa tröskplatsen av dig. Jag ska bygga ett altare där åt Herren, så att folkets plåga upphör.” 22 ”Ta den, min herre och kung, och offra som du vill”, sa Aravna. ”Här är boskap till brännoffret och tröskverktygen och oken till ved! 23 Aravna vill ge dig, kungen, alltsammans och må Herren ta emot dig nådigt!” 24 Kungen svarade Aravna: ”Nej, jag vill köpa det av dig och betala för det, för jag vill inte offra ett brännoffer till Herren, min Gud, som inte kostat mig någonting.” Så köpte David tröskplatsen och boskapen och betalade femtio siklar[d] silver för dem.
25 Där byggde David ett altare åt Herren och offrade brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer. Och då svarade Herren på hans bön för landet och lät pesten upphöra i Israel.

- 24:4 David säger aldrig varför han ville räkna folket, men antingen var det för att kunna skryta eller för att han ville känna sig trygg. I båda fallen var det en synd, för David hade fått sin makt av Herren och Herren skulle vara Israels säkerhet. Jfr 1 Krön 21 där folkräkningen sägs vara åklagarens, satans, initiativ. I 4 Mos 1 sker en folkräkning på Guds befallning.
