大卫惊闻扫罗父子的死讯
1 扫罗死后，大卫杀退了亚玛力人回来，就在洗革拉住了两天。 2 第三天，忽然有一个人从扫罗的营回来，衣服撕裂，头上蒙灰。这人一来到大卫面前，就俯伏在地上叩拜他。 3 大卫问他：“你从哪里来？”他对他说：“我是从以色列的营中逃出来的。” 4 大卫又问他：“情况怎么样？请你告诉我！”他回答：“众人都逃离战场，他们中间不但有许多人倒地阵亡，连扫罗和他的儿子约拿单也死了。” 5 于是，大卫问那向他报信的年轻人：“你怎么知道扫罗和他的儿子死了呢？” 6 那个向大卫报信的年轻人回答：“我刚巧在基利波山，看见扫罗靠在自己的矛枪上，又见有战车和马兵紧紧地追赶他。 7 他回头看到我，就呼唤我。我说：‘我在这里。’ 8 他问我：‘你是谁？’我回答他：‘我是亚玛力人。’ 9 于是他对我说：‘请你站到我身边来，把我杀死，因为痛苦抓住我，我却还死不了。’ 10 我就站到他身边去，把他杀了，因为我知道他一倒下，就不能再活了。我摘下他头上的王冠，取下他臂上的手镯，带到这里来奉给我主。”
11 大卫就抓住自己的衣服，把它们全都撕裂。所有与他在一起的人也都是这样。 12 他们为了扫罗、他的儿子约拿单、耶和华的子民和以色列家的缘故悲哀、哭泣、禁食直到晚上，因为他们已经倒毙在刀下。
报信者死
13 大卫问那向他报信的年轻人：“你是哪里的人？”他回答：“我是个寄居这地的亚玛力人的儿子。” 14 大卫对他说：“你伸手毁灭耶和华的受膏者，怎么还不惧怕呢？” 15 于是大卫叫了一个年轻人来，说：“你上前去，砍倒他。”那年轻人击杀他，他就死了。 16 大卫对他说：“你流人血的罪要归到自己的头上，因为你亲口作证指控自己说：‘我杀了耶和华的受膏者。’”
大卫为扫罗和约拿单作哀歌
17 大卫为扫罗和他的儿子约拿单作了这首哀歌。 18 他又吩咐要把这首“弓歌”教导犹大人。（这首歌记录在《雅煞珥书》上。）
19 “以色列啊！尊荣的人都在高处被杀，
勇士怎么都已仆倒！
20 你们不要在迦特报道，
不要在亚实基伦的街上宣扬，
免得非利士的女子欢喜，
免得未受割礼之人的女子快乐。
21 基利波的群山啊！
愿雨露都不降在你们上面，
愿你们的田地不产供物。
因为勇士的盾牌在那里玷污，
扫罗的盾牌没有用油抹亮。
22 不见被杀者的血、
勇士的脂油，
约拿单的弓不缩回，
扫罗的剑也不空空返回。
23 扫罗和约拿单，
生时相亲相爱，
死时也不分离。
他们比鹰还快速，
比狮子更勇猛。
24 以色列的女子啊！你们要为扫罗哭泣，
他曾给你们穿上朱红色豪华的衣服，
又给你们的外衣加上金饰。
25 勇士怎么会在战阵上倒毙，
约拿单在高处被刺死！
26 我的兄弟约拿单啊！我为你悲痛，
你是我最好的朋友，

27 勇士怎么会倒毙！
争战的武器怎么会毁灭！”
大卫受膏作犹大王
2 这事以后，大卫求问耶和华说：“我可以上犹大的一座城去吗？”耶和华回答：“你上去吧。”大卫又问：“我应该上到哪里去呢？”他回答：“上希伯仑去！” 2 于是大卫带着他的两个妻子，一个是耶斯列人亚希暖，一个是作过迦密人拿八妻子的亚比该，上到那里去了。 3 大卫也把与他在一起的人，和他们各人的家眷都带上去。他们就在希伯仑的城镇里住下来。 4 于是犹大人来到希伯仑，在那里膏立了大卫作王，统治犹大家。
有人报告大卫说：“埋葬扫罗的是基列．雅比人。” 5 大卫就差派使者到基列．雅比人那里去，对他们说：“愿耶和华赐福给你们，因为你们厚待了你们的主扫罗，把他埋葬了。 6 你们既作了这事，现在就愿耶和华以慈爱和诚实待你们，我也要善待你们。 7 现在你们要坚强，要作勇敢的人，因为你们的主扫罗已经死了；犹大家已经膏立了我作他们的王了。”
伊施波设作以色列王
8 当时，扫罗的元帅尼珥的儿子押尼珥已经领着扫罗的儿子伊施波设，把他带过河到玛哈念去， 9 并且立了他作王，统治基列、亚书利、耶斯列、以法莲、便雅悯和以色列众人。 10 扫罗的儿子伊施波设作以色列王的时候，已经四十岁；他作王共两年。犹大家却追随大卫。 11 大卫在希伯仑作王统治犹大家的时候共有七年零六个月。
以色列家与犹大家之战争
12 尼珥的儿子押尼珥带着扫罗的儿子伊施波设的仆从，离开玛哈念，到基遍去。 13 洗鲁雅的儿子约押和大卫的臣仆也出来，在基遍的水池旁边与他们会面。大家都坐下，一队在水池这边，一队在水池那边。 14 押尼珥对约押说：“让年轻人起来，在我们面前比比武。”约押说：“好！叫他们起来。” 15 他们就起来，按着人数走过去：属便雅悯，就是属扫罗的儿子伊施波设的，有十二人；属大卫臣仆的也有十二人。 16 他们各人都紧紧抓住对手的头，用刀刺进对手的肋旁，于是他们全都倒毙。所以在基遍那地方就叫作希利甲．哈素林。 17 那天的战事非常激烈，结果押尼珥和以色列人败在大卫的臣仆面前。
18 洗鲁雅的三个儿子约押、亚比筛和亚撒黑都在那里。亚撒黑的腿轻快如野地的羚羊一般。 19 亚撒黑追赶押尼珥，紧紧地跟着他，不偏左，也不偏右。 20 押尼珥往后瞧着，说：“你是亚撒黑吗？”他回答：“我正是。” 21 押尼珥对他说：“你或转左或转右，抓住一个年轻人，夺去他的武器吧！”可是亚撒黑不愿意离开不追赶他。 22 押尼珥再一次对亚撒黑说：“你离开，别追赶我！我为甚么要把你砍倒在地上呢？以后怎么还有脸见你的哥哥约押呢？” 23 亚撒黑不肯离开，所以押尼珥就用枪的尾端刺入了他的肚子，枪从他的背后穿出。亚撒黑仆倒在那里，当场死了。所有来到亚撒黑倒毙的地方的人，都站住不动。
24 约押和亚比筛却继续追赶押尼珥。日落的时候，他们来到亚玛山，就在通往基遍旷野的路旁，基亚的对面。 25 便雅悯人集结在押尼珥后面，站在一座山头上，列成一个队伍。 26 押尼珥对约押喊叫，说：“刀剑要不停地杀人吗？你不知道结局是痛苦的吗？你要等到甚么时候才吩咐人民转去，不追赶自己的兄弟呢？” 27 约押说：“我指着永活的 神起誓，如果你没有说过比武的话，大家必在早晨的时候离去，不再追赶自己的兄弟。” 28 于是约押吹响号角，众人就站住，不再追赶以色列人，也不再打仗了。 29 押尼珥和属他的人，整夜走过亚拉巴，渡过约旦河，又走过毕伦，才回到玛哈念。
30 约押追赶押尼珥回来，集合所有人的时候，发现在大卫的臣仆中，除了亚撒黑以外，还少了十九个人。 31 但大卫的臣仆击杀便雅悯人和跟随押尼珥的人，共有三百六十人死了。 32 他们把亚撒黑抬回去，埋葬在伯利恒他父亲的坟墓里。约押和属他的人走了一整夜，天亮的时候才回到希伯仑。
3 扫罗家和大卫家之间的战争相持很久。大卫家逐渐兴盛，扫罗家却日趋衰微。
大卫在希伯仑所生的儿子
2 大卫在希伯仑生了几个儿子：他的长子暗嫩，是耶斯列人亚希暖所生的。 3 次子基利押，是作过迦密人拿八的妻子亚比该所生的。三子押沙龙，是基述王达买的女儿玛迦所生的。 4 四子亚多尼雅，是哈及所生的。五子示法提雅，是亚比他所生的。 5 六子以特念，是大卫妻子以格拉所生的。这些儿子都是大卫在希伯仑所生的。
伊施波设和押尼珥之间的磨擦
6 当扫罗家和大卫家交战的时候，押尼珥使自己在扫罗家的权势日渐强大。 7 扫罗有一个妃子，名叫利斯巴，是爱亚的女儿。伊施波设对押尼珥说：“你为甚么亲近我父亲的妃子呢？” 8 押尼珥因伊施波设的话非常忿怒，说：“我是犹大的狗头吗？今天我厚待你的父亲扫罗家、他的兄弟和他的朋友，没有把你交在大卫的手中；可是，今天你竟为了这女人的事来找我的错！ 9-10 我若不按着耶和华向大卫所起誓应许的去行：废去扫罗家的王国，建立大卫的王位，使他统治以色列和犹大，从但直到别是巴，愿 神降罚押尼珥，重重地降罚他。” 11 伊施波设因为惧怕押尼珥，就连一句话也不敢回答他。
押尼珥投诚大卫
12 押尼珥差派使者代表他去见大卫，说：“这地是属谁的呢？”又说：“你与我立约，我就必帮助你，使全以色列都归顺你。” 13 大卫说：“好！我与你立约。不过，我要求你一件事：你来见我面的时候，首先要把扫罗的女儿米甲带来，否则你必不得见我的面。” 14 后来，大卫差派使者去见扫罗的儿子伊施波设，说：“请你把我的妻子米甲还给我，她是我从前用一百个非利士人的包皮聘下的。” 15 于是伊施波设派人去，把米甲从拉亿的儿子她丈夫帕铁那里接回来。 16 米甲的丈夫与她一起去，跟在她后面，一边走、一边哭，一直跟到巴户琳。押尼珥对他说：“你去吧！回去吧！”他只好回去了。
17 押尼珥与以色列的长老商议说：“从前你们希望大卫作你们的王。 18 现在可以实现了！因为耶和华曾经论到大卫说：‘我要借着我的仆人大卫的手，把我的子民以色列从非利士人和他们所有敌人的手中拯救出来。’” 19 押尼珥也把这话说给便雅悯人听，然后又去希伯仑，把以色列人和便雅悯全都同意的一切事说给大卫听。
20 押尼珥带着二十个人，来到希伯仑见大卫的时候，大卫就为押尼珥和与他同来的人摆设筵席。 21 后来，押尼珥对大卫说：“让我去把以色列众人召集到我主我王这里来，好叫他们与你立约，这样你就可以照着自己的心愿统治所有的人。”于是大卫打发押尼珥回去，他就平平安安地走了。
约押疑忌押尼珥
22 那时，大卫的臣仆和约押攻击敌人回来，带回许多的战利品。当时，押尼珥不在希伯仑大卫那里，因为大卫已经打发他离去，他也平平安安地走了。 23 约押和跟随他的全军一到达，就有人告诉约押，尼珥的儿子押尼珥曾经来见过王。王打发他离去，他已经平平安安地走了。 24 约押进去见王，说：“你作了甚么事？押尼珥来见你，你为甚么把他送走？现在他已经走了。 25 你认识尼珥的儿子押尼珥，他来是要欺骗你，是要了解你的起居行动和你所作的一切事。”
26 约押从大卫那里出来，就差派使者去追赶押尼珥，使者从西拉的水井那里把他带回来。可是，大卫一点都不知道。
约押刺杀押尼珥
27 押尼珥回到了希伯仑，约押就拉他到城门的瓮洞里与他密谈。约押就在那里刺透他的肚子，他就死了。这样，他替自己的兄弟亚撒黑报了血仇。 28 事后大卫听到了，就说：“关于尼珥的儿子押尼珥的血案，我和我的国家，在耶和华面前永远是无辜的。 29 愿这流人血的罪归到约押的头上和他父亲的全家！又愿约押家不断有患血漏病的、长痲风的、拿拐杖的、倒毙在剑下的和缺乏粮食的。” 30 因押尼珥在基遍的战场上，杀死了他们的兄弟亚撒黑，约押和他的兄弟亚比筛就杀了押尼珥。
大卫哀悼押尼珥
31 大卫对约押和与他在一起的众人说：“你们要撕裂衣服，腰束麻布，在押尼珥面前哀哭！”大卫王也走在棺木后面。 32 他们把押尼珥埋葬在希伯仑。王在押尼珥的墓旁放声大哭，众人也都哭了。 33 王又为押尼珥作了哀歌，说：
“难道押尼珥死去，要像愚妄的人死去一样吗？
34 你的手没有被绳索绑住，
你的脚也没有被铜炼锁住，
你倒毙，好象人在暴徒面前倒毙一样！”
于是，众民又为押尼珥哀哭。 35 还在白天的时候，众人都来劝大卫吃点饭；大卫起誓说：“我若在日落以前吃饭或吃甚么东西，愿 神降罚我，重重地降罚我。” 36 众人看见了，就都喜悦。王所作的一切，他们都很喜悦。 37 那一天众人和全以色列都知道，杀死尼珥的儿子押尼珥，并不是出于王的意思。 38 王对他的臣仆说：“你们不知道今天在以色列中，有一位将领和伟人倒毙了吗？ 39 今天我虽然受膏为王，但我还是幼弱的。洗鲁雅的两个儿子太强了，非我所能应付。愿耶和华照着恶人所行的恶，报应恶人。”

1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;
2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
5 And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?
6 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.
7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.
8 And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.
11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?
15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.
16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the Lord's anointed.
17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)
19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.
22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.
26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
2 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.
5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6 And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
3 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.
2 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.
6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine?
8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
9 So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the Lord hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;
10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.
11 And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
13 And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
14 And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
15 And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.
16 And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:
18 Now then do it: for the Lord hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.
20 So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.
21 And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22 And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
23 When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
24 Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
25 Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
26 And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28 And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:
29 Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
30 So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.
32 And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.
33 And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?
34 Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.
35 And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.
38 And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
39 And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
