10 後來，亞捫王死了，他兒子哈嫩繼位。 2 大衛說：「我要恩待拿轄的兒子哈嫩，因為他父親曾經恩待我。」他便派臣僕去安慰喪父的哈嫩。大衛的臣僕來到亞捫境內， 3 亞捫的官長卻對哈嫩說：「大衛派人來安慰你，你以為他是來弔唁你父親嗎？他不過是來探聽虛實，想征服我們的城。」 4 哈嫩便把大衛的臣僕抓起來，剃去他們一半鬍子，割去他們下身的衣服，然後放走他們。 5 消息傳到大衛那裡，他就派人去迎接他們，告訴他們住在耶利哥，等鬍鬚長好了再回來，因為他們倍覺羞辱。
6 亞捫人知道得罪了大衛，便派人到伯·利合和瑣巴招募了兩萬名亞蘭步兵、瑪迦王的一千人和一萬二千名陀伯人。 7 大衛聽見消息後，就派約押率領全體勇士出戰。 8 亞捫人在城門前列陣，瑣巴和利合的亞蘭人、陀伯人以及瑪迦人在郊野列陣。 9 約押見自己前後受敵，就從以色列軍中挑選一些精兵迎戰亞蘭人， 10 把餘下的軍兵交給他的兄弟亞比篩帶領，迎戰亞捫人。
11 他對亞比篩說：「倘若我勝不過亞蘭人，你便過來支援我；倘若你勝不過亞捫人，我便過去支援你。 12 我們要剛強，為我們的人民和我們上帝的城邑而奮勇作戰。願耶和華成全祂自己的旨意！」
13 於是，約押率領軍兵進攻亞蘭人，亞蘭人敗逃。 14 亞捫人見亞蘭人敗逃，也從亞比篩面前逃回城去。約押打完亞捫人，便回師耶路撒冷。
15 亞蘭人見自己敗在以色列人手下，便再次聚集起來。 16 哈大底謝派人把幼發拉底河那邊的亞蘭人調到希蘭來，由他的將軍朔法率領。 17 大衛聽到消息後，就召集以色列全軍，渡過約旦河，來到希蘭。亞蘭人列陣迎戰大衛， 18 結果又敗在以色列人手下，四散逃命。大衛殺了七百名戰車兵、四萬騎兵，還殺了他們的將軍朔法。 19 哈大底謝屬下的諸王見自己被以色列人打敗，便向以色列人求和，臣服大衛。從此，亞蘭人再也不敢支援亞捫人了。

10 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.
7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good.
13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

6 亞捫人知道大衛憎惡他們，就派人去招募伯．利合的亞蘭人和瑣巴的亞蘭人，步兵二萬，瑪迦王的人一千，陀伯人一萬二千。 7 大衛聽見了，就差派約押和全體勇士出去。 8 亞捫人出來，在城門前擺陣，瑣巴和利合的亞蘭人，陀伯人和瑪迦人，也分別在郊野擺陣。
亞蘭人與亞捫人敗退(C)
9 約押看見自己前後受敵，就從以色列所有的精兵中，挑選一部分出來，使他們擺陣去迎戰亞蘭人， 10 他把其餘的人交在他兄弟亞比篩手下，使他們擺陣去迎戰亞捫人。 11 約押對亞比篩說：“如果亞蘭人比我強，你就來幫助我。如果亞捫人比你強，我就去幫助你。 12 你要剛強；為了我們的人民和我們 神的眾城鎮，我們要剛強！願耶和華成全他看為美的事。” 13 於是約押和與他在一起的人前進，攻擊亞蘭人；亞蘭人在約押面前逃跑。 14 亞捫人看見亞蘭人逃跑，他們也在亞比篩面前逃跑，逃進城裡去了。約押就從亞捫人那裡回來，回到耶路撒冷去了。
15 亞蘭人見自己被以色列人擊敗，就再聚集起來。 16 哈大底謝差遣人把幼發拉底河那邊的亞蘭人調來。他們來到了希蘭，由哈大底謝的將軍朔法率領他們。 17 有人告訴了大衛，他就聚集所有的以色列人，渡過約旦河，來到了希蘭。亞蘭人擺好了陣迎擊大衛，與他交戰。 18 亞蘭人卻在以色列人面前逃跑。大衛殺了亞蘭七百名駕駛戰車的軍兵，四萬騎兵。又擊殺了亞蘭軍隊的將軍朔法，他就死在那裡。 19 所有臣服於哈大底謝的王看見自己被以色列人打敗，就與以色列人議和，臣服於他們。於是亞蘭人害怕，不敢再幫助亞捫人了。
