2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,^(A) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— ²for kings and all those in authority,^(B) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness^(C) and holiness. ³This is good, and pleases^(D) God our Savior,^(E) ⁴who wants^(F) all people^(G) to be saved^(H) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.^(I) ⁵For there is one God^(J) and one mediator^(K) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,^(L) ⁶who gave himself as a ransom^(M) for all people. This has now been witnessed to^(N) at the proper time.^(O)

Proverbs 21:1-4

21 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water
that he channels toward all who please him.^(A)

²A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.^(B)

³To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.^(C)

The Supremacy of the Son of God

¹⁵The Son is the image^(A) of the invisible God,^(B) the firstborn^(C) over all creation. ¹⁶For in him all things were created:^(D) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;^(E) all things have been created through him and for him.^(F) ¹⁷He is before all things,^(G) and in him all things hold together. ¹⁸And he is the head^(H) of the body, the church;^(I) he is the beginning and the firstborn^(J) from among the dead,^(K) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. ¹⁹For God was pleased^(L) to have all his fullness^(M) dwell in him, ²⁰and through him to reconcile^(N) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,^(O) by making peace^(P) through his blood,^(Q) shed on the cross.
